Welcome to Keep Going with Zaedra. It is a new moon in Gemini. It happens to be a supermoon, which means the moon is the closest to Earth that it'll be this year. But you can't see it because it's a new moon. So it's kind of hidden. It's kind of a a neat little mystery for you. I want to uh add a qualifier for today's sound quality and ask your grace for that. I am actually attending a conference today that starts today. I'm learning to sell better. And that's actually what I want to talk about on this new moon because the new moon is the time where we start things, where we set our intention for the coming months, and because it's June getting ready to be July, we're moving into the next quarter. So now is a good time to revisit what you've accomplished up to this point and then set your intention for the second half of the year, which will start on July 1st. So you have a few more weeks of the first half of the year if you're doing your calendar year January 1 to December 31. As most of you know, I run my calendar from December 31st, November 1st, which is Sawin, all the way back around through. So for me, I'm entering my third quarter. I'm sorry, my fourth quarter, not my third quarter. But it doesn't matter. The point is you can start new whenever you want. The new moon is a perfect time to set intentions. And in Gemini, the energy is to switch it up and to up level and really decide who you want to be and which half you want to be, because everything is 50-50. So half of the time things are going to be rocking, and half the time that they're going to be horrible. And so that means you get to decide how you want to show up and who you want to be and what energy you want to devote to this next cycle. So let's talk briefly about selling since that's what I'm up for in this new moon. And the first thing I want you to notice is when I said that earlier, and when I said it again just now, what did you think? What did you feel? Did it give you an ick? Did it give you an ooh, I'm curious about that? Did it give you a why do I have to listen to this? What was the thought that came up for you? Because I'll tell you, when I first started being an entrepreneur and somebody talked to me about selling, I wanted no part of it. In fact, one of the struggles I had working in nonprofit is the development aspect and asking for donations, because I definitely had a thought about what it meant to ask people for money or to convince people to partake in what I was offering. And what I've realized in this journey of entrepreneurship and not just because I'm smart, it's because I have a lot of coaches who have helped me through this, is that selling when done properly isn't really about you. It's about the person that you're offering your product or service to. And I don't mean that from a what can we get them to buy weigh. I mean it from a what do they need and do I have something that can help them weigh? And so if you think about that switch, that could give you some breathing room. I'm not going to teach you a whole thing about selling today, because that's what I'm going to learn. So I'm really excited about that and I'll have more to share with you as we move forward. Today I want to invite you to this concept that I have, which I'll share with you in a moment, just a different way to think about selling. So before we jump into that, the first thing we have to decide when we want to get good at selling is that we want to be good at selling. So that's why I asked what were the feelings that came up for you when I said that, because we need to make decisions. Well, we don't need to do anything, but to be effective, we make decisions that we are going to take this on and that we want to take this on. That being someone, so in this case, someone who can sell, being someone who can sell is an identity that I want to grow into. It's something that I'm excited to learn and strengthen and expand. If I sit here in the energy of I hate selling and I don't want to be salesy and it feels ick, it's going to be really difficult for me to even learn the skill because I'm going to have a cognitive dissonance between what I think I want to accomplish and who I think I want to be, because I'll think of those two things as in conflict. I'm not saying that we want to discount our thoughts and our feelings. I'm saying we want to examine them and decide what we agree with and what's serving us and what we want to move on from. So I have this idea that we are always selling. So we're selling to our employers that we're good at our job and we're doing our work and we're adding value to the company. We're selling our partners on what movie to go see or what to watch on TV or what to buy at the grocery store. We're selling our children on how to behave or what to eat, or if your children are four-legged like mine, not to run off. And mostly we're selling ourselves. We're selling ourselves on the idea that we can have what we want, that we can accomplish what we dream, that we deserve and are worthy of our desires and our dreams. Half of the time our brains are convincing us or selling us on the idea that we suck. And our job is to sell ourselves on the idea that we don't suck all the time. In fact, we're pretty awesome most of the time, and occasionally we're not so great, and that's okay, so that we can learn and grow from that. But still, that is a sales process. This idea of selling in that regard can give you a little bit of freedom and breathing room about uh let you be a little bit more playful about what it means to have conversations and to have something or an intention that you want to share, a product or service that you want to offer somebody. Um when we're thinking though, about having a conversation with someone, like an actual sales conversation, or we want to pitch a product, or we want to submit a proposal to someone to get funded, let's say for a grant agreement or to reach a donor base. I have this concept that I call four people in the room, and it's I'll explain it like this. When we are having a conversation with someone, we think that it's me and that person, and that my job is to communicate my intention to that person and hope that they understand. But really that's not what's happening. What's happening is I'm thinking thoughts about that person, and I'm thinking thoughts about myself, and they are thinking thoughts about me, and they are thinking thoughts about themselves. And the the thoughts sound like this. So I'm thinking about that person. Oh, I wonder what they think of me. I wonder if I'm coming across well, I wonder if they're understanding me. I wonder if they're mad at me. I wonder if they like my clothes, I wonder if they're gonna buy, I wonder if they want what I have. But we also have thoughts about ourselves. Oh, I don't know if I can do this, I'm really not good at sales, this feels really uncomfortable. I have to sell this product right now. They also have thoughts about themselves. Oh my gosh, I don't want to get taken advantage of. Oh, I really hope this person has what I need. If they have this offer, could it really satisfy what I what I want? Oh, but I want to make sure that I'm thinking it through and that I'm being really smart and then I don't look dumb, but I want to seem like I know what she's talking about. And they have thoughts about us. Oh, I don't know if they're trying to sell me. Oh, I wonder if they really do have the solution. They seem really put together. Oh, she seems really confident. Oh, she seems like she's fumbling over her words, right? So it's a lot of noise. It's four different mindsets, right? We think it's me and you, but really it's me and my thoughts about me, and me and my thoughts about you, and you and your thoughts about me, and you and your thoughts about you. Why does that why why am I sharing that? Why is that like relevant to this conversation? Because, my dear friend, the only one of those four conversations we have any agency over really is our thoughts about ourselves. We think that if we do the right song and dance or wear the right outfit or have the strongest, confident presentation, that we're gonna convince that other person that we know what we're talking about and that we're gonna make them think good thoughts about us that will get them to buy. But in fact, we have zero control over what they think. And we know that because I could go into a room in my one outfit with my one personality, and three people are gonna love me, and three people are gonna be turned off by me. It's got nothing to do with me, it's got to do with them and what's going on in their life and their filters. So my job is to show up as my best self and know that I am there for the people that are my people, and know that I'm not there for everybody. And the best way to show up as my best self is to take care of that one part of the puzzle, that one of the four, which is me and my thoughts about me. And that's really what coaching helps with. It helps with that piece of that quad. Because when you have all that mind chatter going on and everybody's thinking all these thoughts, we're not communicating. But if I am confident and clear about my thoughts with my about myself, if I'm intentional about what I want to think about who I am, if I at least can quiet all of the matote, as Don Miguel Reese calls it, so that I could actually be present with the person across from me, then I have a chance to actually hear what they need, to hear what they desire, and to see what I have to offer them that could help them with what they need. Not the thing that I want to sell to them and find, you know, a way in, and not so that I can be in their good graces and they'll like me. No. It's to be present with them to see how I can help. And to do that, I need to be solid in who I am with myself. So I know this is short and sweet. There's more to this conversation, obviously. It goes quite in depth. Like, like what does a person need to believe to buy? You know, they need to believe in you, they need to believe in themselves, they need to be believe that the product that you're selling them is going to have the solution for them. You need to think all those things too. So there's a lot more to discuss, especially when it comes to selling as opposed to providing the service itself. But for this moment on this new moon, when we're setting intentions and we get to choose the energy that we're going forward in, I simply wanted to offer you this to ponder throughout your day, like what part of this equation am I sitting in right now and do I like it? Do I want to do something about it? I don't have to. I could just notice it and be curious and be interested and think of a new way to relate with the whole conversation of selling and also of being sold to. Because think about it. We think we don't like to be sold to, but uh SimplyPosh just unleashed an eyeshadow palette that I was really smitten with and wanted to be convinced to buy. I wanted to be sold on it. So think about your baseball games or the Knicks, right? Or whatever is up that you're super excited about. We'd like to be sold when it's a product or service that we want and are interested in. So now that you have this idea of the four people in the room, see how being sold to and how you think about selling changes when you think of it from that lens. If you have any questions, because I know this is deep and I only touch the surface of it, please email me at inspired at zeda rose ibanis.com or at IG at Zeter Rose and LinkedIn at Zeder Rose Ibanis.
