Great Things Are Built By Teams - Jaylin Christensen
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
This episode features an interview with Jaylin Christensen, who works as an assistant on the Hunters of Happiness team. The conversation focuses on how she joined the team, what her role actually looks like, and the personal growth that has come from the experience.
How Jaylin Joined the Team
Jaylin had originally reached out months earlier expressing interest in working with the hosts but never received a response. Later, when the host was overwhelmed and looking for help, she remembered that email, found it, and reached out. The timing worked perfectly. Jaylin interviewed, immediately felt it was the right fit, and left her previous job to join the team.
Both sides describe the situation as a “perfect match” that came together at the right time.
What the Job Looks Like
Jaylin’s role is intentionally broad and hard to define. It includes:
- Hands-on work on DIY and construction projects
- Assisting with various tasks as needed
- Occasionally supporting content creation
The work is unpredictable and often physically demanding. Projects include large builds, tight deadlines, and long days, but the variety keeps it engaging.
Growth Through Discomfort
A major theme is personal growth by stepping into uncomfortable situations.
Jaylin frequently found herself doing things she had never done before, such as:
- Using new tools
- Taking on complex builds
- Driving a trailer
Initially, these experiences felt overwhelming, but working through them built confidence quickly. The environment encourages trying, failing, and fixing rather than avoiding mistakes.
The Role of Creativity
Jaylin identifies creativity as a key driver of her happiness. She explains that:
- Creating things helps her feel like herself
- It serves as a mental and emotional outlet
- It builds confidence over time
The hosts expand on this idea, noting that many adults lose creative outlets and that having one is important for personal fulfillment.
Teamwork and Collaboration
The episode emphasizes that strong teamwork leads to better outcomes. Working together allows for:
- Better problem-solving
- More creative ideas
- Faster and more effective execution
The dynamic between the team is collaborative, with everyone contributing ideas and solutions.
Work Environment
Jaylin describes the work environment as supportive and positive. Key aspects include:
- Being encouraged to share ideas
- Feeling safe making mistakes
- Building real friendships with the team
The hosts highlight that this type of environment helps people grow faster and enjoy their work more.
Most Meaningful Project
Jaylin’s favorite project was a five-day room makeover for a family. It stood out because:
- It had emotional impact
- It brought many people together
- It showed how their work can directly affect others’ lives
This experience reinforced the purpose behind what they do.
Reality of Content Creation
One of Jaylin’s biggest realizations was how much effort goes into content creation. From the outside, it appears simple, but in reality it involves:
- Planning
- Intentional storytelling
- Significant behind-the-scenes work
Future Goals
Jaylin shares that she would like to eventually work for herself, possibly in content creation. The hosts are supportive of her long-term growth, even if it leads her beyond her current role.
There's a quote that I like that's it's I don't even know who said it, but it's great things were never done by individuals, only by teams.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I love that. I love that. And you're a part of our team. Oh, that's so cute.
SPEAKER_03Hey. Hello. Hey. Here we are. Welcome to the Happiness Podcast, episode five.
SPEAKER_02Today we have a special guest, Jalen Christensen. She's my assistant and has been my assistant for 10 months. Yeah. Oh, wow. I know. It feels like longer to me. It feels like I've known her my whole life. I know. I agree. But we're excited to interview her about being a Hunters of Happiness employee. There were lots of questions from you guys. And I think it'll be so fun for them to get to know you because we love you. I could live without her. I will one day. I'll have to. I'll have to let the we don't need to think about it. We don't need to think about it. We don't need to think about that.
SPEAKER_01First, why don't you introduce yourself? Tell us all about. I'm 27, I'm married, and I'm from Utah. And like this is my life, honestly. Like people are like, what do you do for fun? I'm like, this. This is fun.
SPEAKER_03I work for fun.
SPEAKER_01Like I do this with you. It's fun. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, it's so fun. And then I go home and I do it for myself. Yeah. So it's like, there's not much to say.
SPEAKER_03You can't stop, you can't get enough.
SPEAKER_01How long have you guys been married? We've been married five years, five and a half years.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And we love Parker too. Yeah. He's the best. And how many animal? Jalen is an animal lover. Yes. I have two cats and I love them so much.
SPEAKER_01And she's Bo's like surrogate mom's godmother. Bo is like my child. Yeah. Like when you guys are gone and I don't get it come into work, like I miss you, but I'm like, you really miss you. Bo.
SPEAKER_02Bo. Bo knows too that like that you're a softy for him. Oh, he knows. He gets more sometimes. I feel like he'll run right past me to Jay. He's like, he just knows he gets food from me. He does know it's the real problem. I don't know how many months in it was when you were working. And I was and I was like, Jay, you do not have to feed him. And you're like, Oh, I I usually bring him all something.
SPEAKER_00And I was like, Are you packing?
SPEAKER_01Like, I pack extra. Yeah. I'm like, this part's for Bo.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So the main question everybody had that we can walk through is how did you come to work with us? And um it was kind it was kind of, I don't know. Why don't you share it from your perspective?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then you can share from yours. Yeah. Because it's a good story. I think so. Um, well, I needed a job and I literally have followed you since like 2020, probably. And I had noticed that you were local to me. So I emailed you and was just like, I was flipping my house. I still am. It's a it's a never-ending project.
SPEAKER_03It's a long place.
SPEAKER_01Still going. When did you and Harger buy that house that you're flipping? Um, we bought that in uh May of 2024. Uh-huh. So we've been working on that. Yeah, I forgot to put that in about me. But um, I was working on that and I emailed you, and I was just like, what you do, I think is so cool. I'm close to you. I know I am, and I have a background in like being able to build and be creating this house. Yeah, power tools. So I shot my shot and I never heard back.
unknownJust kidding.
SPEAKER_01That was in December of 2022.
SPEAKER_03Four. Four.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. And then I think I DM'd you later. Oh, really? And I think I was like the same thing.
SPEAKER_00I was like, I want to work with you.
SPEAKER_02And I didn't see that one either. I didn't even know that. I should go back and see if I do get a lot of DMs. DMs get lost more than emails.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So, and I knew it was a long shot, like that you would even see it. But then I got a new job, and it wasn't like necessarily for me, I think. And so I was kind of looking for something else. And then in May of 2025, I was out of the country and I was just checking my email, and I was like, I literally had an email from you, and I was like gonna poop my pants because I was just like, I I completely lost hope on that situation. Well, yeah, it was what five or something. Yeah, almost six because yeah. And so I was just like, I answered you. I'm like, I'm not gonna be home for like 10 days, but please, like, I want to come in and interview. And luckily you waited for me, and then yeah, I went, met you, and I literally quit my job the next day. Yeah, and I didn't even give a two-week notice, which I've never done that, but it would just made sense. So, and sure enough, it's been like the perfect puzzle piece for for me too.
SPEAKER_02Like from my perspective, I feel like that email came in in December, and now you know we do those Christmas builds, and I feel like I saw it and I didn't even open it. I think I just saw I love all the work for you that was like the you know, saw the little thing and like must have logged it in the back of my brain in some capacity. But then um come I think it was like April, I was like, I need to find some help. Yeah, I was really in a low spot just of like drowning, and but it is like a unique job listing because I wanted some like I love having physical help with the projects and just like not being lonely in work too, like having someone come, and but it's gotta be like a good fit. I'm most women aren't gonna be like able to like help with power tools, and and then I wanted someone local, uh, it's just like a unique fit, but I didn't want it to be it just I didn't know how to find someone. Yeah, so from my perspective, I went, I was like, I don't know how to find this person, but I know there's someone out there that's probably perfect for this job and it would be great. And I went on my back patio and I said a prayer and was like, God, help me find whoever is supposed to be like could fit this job. And literally, I was like, some the thought popped into my head that someone had emailed me, and I didn't know like even how far back it was. I think it took me 20 to 30 minutes to find your email because I get a lot of emails. I was like, I'm pretty sure someone emailed me and I searched like job, employment, like I searched a few topics, and then I finally found your email. And I was like, oh my gosh, this could be like exactly who I'm looking for. And it was and so um, yeah, but she came in and interviewed, and I think we hired you on the spot.
SPEAKER_03On the spot, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01I think so. I think like Scott had said something to me, like, I don't even remember. When could you start?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like something, and I was like, I think it was at the house that I was like, well, if you start the interview, I was like, Would you ever want to come to Idaho with me? Yeah, that's exactly it.
SPEAKER_03Well, and I we were like, we we kind of want you to give two weeks, but also we want you to start right now.
SPEAKER_02That was one of the things I was most stressful about is that I was doing the playroom makeover for Brielle and her family in Idaho. And I was so stressed about it because I knew one week the house was being built, and so we only had five days once we could even get into the house to finish the room. And I had a few friends that were gonna help, but I was just so overwhelmed. And when you were like, Yeah, I think I'll come, I was just like, What?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and at that time, didn't we think it was gonna be like we like in the next week and a half or something? And then they ended up having to push a little bit, I think. But I was just like, Okay.
SPEAKER_03No, yeah, tell us your experience of us throwing you into the deep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like literally chuck. I honestly think that was like the best way for it to work out, though, because I became comfortable with you so fast. We're like it was kind of almost my time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Dove in. Yeah. Because that really was. We went down and did the giving build for your sister in the playroom. And then I went straight. I think I had two days, and then we went straight up to do the one at Brielle's house. And we but we had the whole that was like our first time really working together. Yeah, and I think you would come a few days before then.
SPEAKER_01It was kind of like like in between what everything is. Yeah, here's a tour of the house.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, here's the shop. So we had not really like worked the project yet. No, we had because I remember calling Scott. So we had the whole drive up there. So it was like a three and a half, yeah, four-hour drive to talk and to get to know each other. And then we were literally, we literally slept on the job. You're like the other, yes, in the on the floor, in the playroom. Yeah. Yeah. It is like a like out of a movie. Sleepover, yeah. Yeah, it's out of a movie. Um, but it was literally working 24-7 for five days. But I remember the very first day on that job, we needed to build all the walls for the playhouse. And I was like, we need to build these walls, let's lay them out. And then I was like, okay, you do you want to come hold and I'll use the fours? Yeah, hold the two by four, and I will use the framing nail gun. And I remember like getting on the ground kneeling, and you held the two by four perfectly. And I was just like, what? Angel has been sent to me that I did you she knew how to hold the two by four. I'm like, this is gonna be so great. Because you had been building walls and framing your basement and everything. Yes. So, like that you have all those skills is just um crazy. I there aren't a lot of women that have that lay level of skill either. Maybe you know how to use a little bit, and um or lots of people I think are willing to be trained, but that you were already there, especially when I needed you and you jumped in so quickly, it was just great. But yeah, that was our first.
SPEAKER_01Well, remember how amazed I was too at your framing nail gun. I was like, this because it's battery operated. We had been hand nailing our something else that most women don't get excited about.
SPEAKER_03Is that what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01This frame nail gun. Yeah, and I remember every else. You were like, try it. And I was like, Okay. And I did it. I was like, I feel so powerful.
SPEAKER_03That's right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But that's how that was like our first project. And honestly, we threw you in a deep end and it didn't really stop until after the Christmas build. No, it was a rolling snowball down the hills. It really was. Oh, I guess we did take a break to go to Disneyland. We did, yeah. But that's about it.
SPEAKER_01Without November. Yes.
SPEAKER_02But we didn't. So since Jalen has started, we did a five-day playroom makeover in Idaho, and then we completely made over the whole pickleball court area, like did the finishing on the pickleball court, all of that. Then which may have caused some trauma. No, no, no. The the trauma's events. We're not there yet. Then we paused and then we went and did the giving build for Lindsay and her family and the bedroom makeover again in five days. Psycho. Like that one's so amazing, though. They're they're so hard, but they're so great.
SPEAKER_01Yes, they're so rewarding. Like such a cool experience. Yeah. When I did Brielle's, I was like, it changed me, I swear. That changed me. Lindsay's as well. Like, just such a cool thing to be a part of. But sorry, keep going.
SPEAKER_02No, no, no. That's then we went straight, came back, and then we built the pickleball fence, which you and I both will have lasting trauma for the rest of our lives on that pickleball fence. On my deathbed, I'll see Lattice. Oh no, we were literally just talking when she came in about uh there are so many questions about how Jalen stays so fit and that she looks very strong. She is very strong. And but we both were I was in the best shape from building that fence. Oh my gosh. Because it's walking forever.
SPEAKER_01We both lost weight using that fence.
SPEAKER_02Like because we and probably gained muscle because we were carrying and lifting those huge 12-foot posts, putting and then the bags. I just I was watching the video of us. We carried, you know, a thousand pounds of concrete all the way back there. And then all the wood, and then bent over.
SPEAKER_01It was it was not to mention, this was in the height of the summer. It's true. It was so like we were sweating.
SPEAKER_02We were out all day. Your poor sunburns, you were kidding.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I know.
SPEAKER_02Remember the fingers? Remember how I had I didn't sunscreen the one part of my back? Yeah, and then I had the tatan.
SPEAKER_03That lasted forever. Yeah, till like mexican.
SPEAKER_02The girls were like, What happened to your skin? Because still in the middle of winter, I have this spot on my back.
SPEAKER_03It's like six months later, it's still there. It's still there.
SPEAKER_02Oh, but and then after that, we helped. My my popacy came. We gotta make loved that so. That was really fun. He papasi loves Jalen. Loved Jalen. He kept him. Yeah, he kept being like, I was like, Popsy, stop convincing her to go do something else for work. He was like, You have such great skills. You would be amazing at this, you would be amazing at that. He was so cute, the sweetest. He's awesome. And so we plant planted 110 plants with Popsi. And then we went to Disneyland for your birthday. Oh my gosh. And that was and that was much deserved because we had not stopped. Yeah. For non-stop. Like six months. Yeah. Just yeah. Straight. Huge projects. And we knew that the giving or the Christmas build was coming. So it was kind of like a let's go have some fun.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01And then we did the crazy Christmas build. Yeah. Yeah. So and we had um the pergola too in there. Which we forgot. I helped less so with that, but yes, the pergola. But the whole yard was just the whole yard.
SPEAKER_02And it's just so far back there, too. There's so much walking. If you forgot one thing back there, it's a walk.
SPEAKER_03Just gotta walk it out. Yeah. Jalen's always like, I'll run. Yeah. Uh I was actually just telling, I was just telling somebody else that like you don't even understand. We've walked this a thousand times last summer.
SPEAKER_00So Trail of Tears.
SPEAKER_01That's what Mary D said yesterday. She was like, I can't believe you guys walked back here like a million times as you did. I'm like, oh, you have no idea boards and boards and and wagons and the wagon.
SPEAKER_03My favorite wagon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Such a good wagon.
SPEAKER_03It's now it's gonna be the puppy wagon.
SPEAKER_02The puppy wagon.
SPEAKER_03The P wagon, we'll call it.
SPEAKER_02Oh my goodness. That doesn't sound good. Over I feel like since you've started, even like roles have kind of shifted. Switched a little. But at first it's kind of like someone's like, what's her job responsibilities? And I'm like, I kind of was just like anything everything.
SPEAKER_01I literally I just need help. I never know like what I'm gonna be helping with you with on a day-to-day basis. Like I honestly should have like clothes in my car ready. Because it's because some days, you know, like the other day, I'm just like covered in paint, and other days I'm just helping you with like random tasks, you know. Yeah, it's hard to describe like my job. When people ask me, I'm just like I don't know what to say.
SPEAKER_03Like well, if it makes you feel better, we have a hard time describing it ourselves.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. We went to lunch yesterday, and someone's like, What do you do for work? And I was like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_01The last time someone asked me, I was just like complicated. I don't know what do you usually usually say? I usually say that I work for a DIY content creator, yeah, and I'm mostly helping you hands-on. Yeah. Because I think most people think when I say that that I'm like an assistant, yeah, doing things on your accounts for you, which I really don't end up helping that much. Only if you're like really swamped.
SPEAKER_02But that was one of the big questions was like, does she just help with projects? Is she did she start digitally?
SPEAKER_03And that said, she also has digital skills.
SPEAKER_01You do, yes, you do. Yeah, but it's hard because what like how you show up online is so unique to you. It's like I I can't replicate it.
SPEAKER_02And that's I've had Scott's multiple times been like, you're so you're drowning in editing or like this or that, and but it's just giving up a part, like that's what makes it me. So I've always been like, I just don't think I can outline it. I think that part's gotta be. It really is so unique to you. Yeah, like the way that you tell me. It's like your voice. Yeah. So, but so typically Jay helps me hands-on with projects and because she's so good at it. And I and you've just improved so much, even. Oh, so much. Yeah, so much.
SPEAKER_01What do you feel like you've learned the most? I don't know, just honestly being comfortable with everything. Like, I knew how to use all a lot of these tools. Some of them are new to me, but now, like, like the framing nail gun, I was thinking of like it's nothing to me now. But like I could use it before, but it was like, okay, like, yeah, here we go, here we go. Like, you know, and now I'm just like like I'm not even paying attention at this point. So it's just the comfortability and like the confidence that comes with that, I think. Yeah, yeah. The more you do something, the more confident you feel, the more capable you feel. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So and your you have your ability to do uh drawings and plans and sketches is like it's so good. It's amazing. Mine are always like chicken scratch, and then she's like, I drew a plan, and it's so perfect. That was um, that was a question. Was uh someone was like, Do you give input on the projects? What do you think?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely, yes. That was something that I feel like I was like shocked about, like working for you guys. And even like the fifth and sixth and seventh time you'd ask my opinion, I feel like it was still shocking to me. Really? Yeah, because I was just like, You want my opinion? Like, and it made me feel so like valued and respected, but it also like I feel like you guys are always pushing me, like, no, you know, you know, like, or even when you send me off to do something and I'm like, I don't know if I can do that. You're like, Yeah, you can. And I'm just like and then I go do it though, yeah, like and rock it. So yeah, it's the same thing with like asking my input. Like, sometimes I'm like, oh, I'm not qualified for that.
SPEAKER_02And then we talk about it, and I'm like, Yeah, I I had something good to say, like, you know, always a lot of really good ideas, and that's what I love, why I love being able to work with somebody like on the projects, because sometimes I feel like we both catch each other. Like if we're making a plan and we're working on building something, and then you're you're like, Well, what if we did it this way instead? And I'm like, genius, that'll save us two steps. Or if we're walking through it, yeah, there's just two people to think through, like, or what if we did it this way? Same with when I when Scott helped more with the projects. Scott's focused on his business right now, which is great. Um, but it's and and like when he jumps in, then we've got three minds. Yeah. And an even more creative one. I don't think you and I could have figured out the the foam. The foam. Oh my gosh. The foam cutter. We both were just like, no, literally, I didn't even know what he was doing. I didn't know what he was doing at all. I was like, run with it, hon. Like, I can't, I'm too stressed. You just figure out how to cut these giant foam blocks.
SPEAKER_01And then didn't we like? I don't think we came out together, but we both had like seen him run it through, and we're just like, I was like, I could not understand the foam table saw.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he was explaining it, and I could not picture it. And then once I was like, no, I couldn't even build a saw for the foam. That was incredible.
SPEAKER_01From two by boys, that was really cool. Or um the thing that you ripped the the facade of the logs. Yeah, that's I was just like, I don't know what you're talking about. And then he made it, and I was like, oh my gosh, that's so cool.
SPEAKER_02Scott's got a little engineer brain in there.
SPEAKER_03I do. I've got I've always been interested in how things work for sure. But all I mean, yeah, the three of us for sure. When we if if one of us will come up with something.
SPEAKER_02That's what we've kind of yeah, definitely. If we if we hit a point where it's like, how are we gonna do this? Yeah, yep, one of us will come up with something.
SPEAKER_03So what's your what's your favorite part about the job?
SPEAKER_01Favorite part?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I love how much I learn and like it feels like a safe place. Like you guys are never hard on me. Like I make mistakes, and you are very like, we can fix it, we can fix it, and you'll always show me how to do things. But I also love that like. I feel like I've genuinely become friends with lifelong food. Yeah, of course. Like it literally feels like I'm hanging out with a friend. Yeah. Like, and I love the like, you know, we eat lunch a lot of the time together. Like, it's just a very comfortable, like safe work environment. And I appreciate that so much. Well, I'm glad you feel that way.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we are glad you feel that way. And we like we love to see you grow as well. I think it's one of the things that's so fun. That's one of our favorite parts about working with people generally is just seeing, you know, their individual growth in their own lives.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. And like what you said about like making mistakes. I think that's one of the things that DIY teaches you the most. Like when like you made the first mistake and you're so hard on yourself. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. And I was like, it's literally fine. And that DIY helps you like get over the fear of mistakes because you have to fix it or else you just stop, right? You can't, you have to fix it in order to finish your project, but you fix it and then you get more comfortable with making mistakes. Then the next time you make a mistake, you're not as worried. You're like, okay, it's annoying, but you know there's a way to fix it. Yeah. Like there's a way to fix it. And that's how I was when I first started project.
SPEAKER_03We should we should jump back to when you first started jumping.
SPEAKER_02Well, do you remember the the built-ins? I think I told Jay this when she was sad the first time she made a mistake. I'm like, you're handling a lot better than I did.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I was jumping back even farther when because like I I think when we when we first started doing things, you you would be you you would tell me, like, no, we can't do that. Like, oh, we we need a contractor.
SPEAKER_02We need to yeah, way far back. I was too afraid of making mistakes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I I you know we talked about it when just like, you know, we can fix it, we can do whatever.
SPEAKER_02We can get it to where it needs to be.
SPEAKER_03And we got uh, you know, a lot. I think we that's a lot how quite.
SPEAKER_02I was more talking about the mudroom built-ins.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02When I I spent two days building the built-in box for like the bottom, and then I realized that it wasn't square, but it was all wood glued, and I couldn't, I just had to start over. It was the only option. If the drawers that I had ordered were gonna fit inside, I had to start over.
SPEAKER_03You beat it to smithereens.
SPEAKER_02Beat it to smithereens. I got a sledgehammer and I got all my frustration. I took the box of and Scott was like, you maybe could have used some of that black. And I just was so frustrated. I probably have it somewhere, but I just like hid it until it shattered and broke, and then I was like, it's so much fun. Let's start over. But I feel like me personally, I was a big perfectionist, like really struggled with making mistakes, did not feel comfortable with it. And DIY just forces you out of that because you're going to make mistakes. The only ones that you really cannot make are involving your fingers. Let's keep all the bigger. Don't make mistakes on your limbs. Yeah, but otherwise I do think, especially having employees, I'm better at safety than when it was just me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because I'm responsible for your safety.
SPEAKER_01And so I'm like, And you've made me kind of a stickler. Remember when the people were doing the cinder block fireplace and I was like, do they not care about their ears? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like the contractor, Debbie. I'd say that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02We're like, they should be wearing early protection.
SPEAKER_01Why are they not wearing ear protection?
SPEAKER_02They should probably be wearing a mask when they're cutting the smith.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I did have, I don't remember when I had this epiphany, but I was like so hard on myself about my mistakes with you. And then I was like, I'm literally with like professional like fixers, basically. That's like what better place to make a mistake? Like you guys know how to correct most anything. So like I'm in a good place to learn and like make mistakes. And you also make very, very few mistakes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Which is probably like that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, no.
SPEAKER_03I feel like you We feel that way for sure. Okay, good. It's been great, yeah, for sure. What's been the most surprising part about the job? I mean, you probably we've talked about how it's kind of chaos continuously, and that is just the reality of the situation. But uh what based on your expectations and reality, what's been the bus biggest like surprise, where it's like, oh, that's not what I thought it was.
SPEAKER_01I don't think necessarily anything about the job has been surprising, but I think seeing how your job works in the front row is what's the most surprising. Like I think it's easy for people who don't do it to think that it's very second nature for you to just post and like throw things up. And um, I've learned that like there's so much effort behind it and like planning and intention. When before I kind of just thought that there were people born to do it and they just put it out and it's easy. Yeah. And it's like it's actually way more intentional than you would think. But as far as like my duties and like working with you guys, I feel like it's been pretty on brand to like what I thought it would be. Well, that's good. We're not killing it too.
SPEAKER_02No, no, except for the fence, except for which we had nobody had no idea what we were getting into. It was killing us, it was killing everyone. We were just like, like, literally, like if I have to walk out there one more time. No, I felt like a zombie sometimes. I was just like, You wouldn't, I'm sure you came home and were just like, yeah, I wouldn't even speak.
SPEAKER_01I would just like sit down and just like this was an interesting question.
SPEAKER_02Are there any perks to the job?
SPEAKER_01I mean, um, I definitely benefit from some PR boxes. Yes, that's what I would say. I love to give the extra PR. Yeah, and like, I don't know. I'm just a girl, you're just a girl. We love the girly stuff. But when you sat made me sit down, it was during the fence, and we just had a hard week, and you literally were like, You're watching this, you're not moving. You put a Zevia in my hand, and I remember you came behind me and put a little bar of like a little thing of chocolate on top of my Zevia. And then I like tried to get up for something, and you're like, sit down, relax. Yeah. So it's like definitely a perk working with someone who is just fun.
SPEAKER_02Like you're just hot. I think now that I'm thinking back, the things I'm like, oh man, I forced you to come over and watch Hamilton because you told me you had never watched Hamilton. Yes. I forced you to watch the the Aeros Tour documentary. I forced you to listen to the podcast, the thing about Pam.
SPEAKER_01Yes. But these all change for me for the better. And you had me come over and play pickleball when we finished the pickleball court. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And remember that you and Parker had like never played and we played and you guys beat us. And I was like, we've got no proof. You got I think you guys were letting us have points. No, that's the part we left. We're like, we if we're gonna have people come over to play, like we gotta we gotta step it up.
SPEAKER_04We gotta practice.
SPEAKER_02Maybe we need a coach. Um, what's the hardest part?
SPEAKER_01The hardest part. I like that you have to think if I'm gonna be on. I'm like easy.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't know. I think the hardest part for me is that I don't get to keep you forever.
SPEAKER_01I know.
SPEAKER_02But we'll still be friends, which is great. I know. And and it's hard because my girls love you. I know. They're best. They're so cute. And Bo. Like ever. If when you move on to the next thing, there you'll just have to come around. Yeah. And luckily, your family lives around where we live, so we'll we'll never be far. You're gonna have your baby shower in my backyard. Yes, of course. She's not pregnant. No, I'm just like one day. Like surprise. One day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, surprise Parker.
SPEAKER_01He doesn't even know. I think the hardest part, this isn't even like terribly hard, but like the uncomfortability that comes with like growing. Like, I think there's a lot of times where I feel in over my head, like with what we're doing. And I think that's like you know, easy to dread sometimes. Like, oh, what am I gonna have to do this? Yes, yeah. But then it I feel so good after, like when Scott sent me with the trailer, and I was like, I've never driven a trailer. He's like, You got it, and I was just like, I was like, Scott! No, but then after I was like, I just drove a trailer, yeah. Like, yeah, it is true, like and we did a little more instruction on that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he didn't give me just send her blind, he didn't give me some instructions, but I I knew you could do it, and yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think that's true. Of all uncomfortability, it's not fun to step into it, but it makes everything more rewarding. Yes, and the confidence that you feel like I feel like that's part of the reason DIY is so addicting is because you kind of even sometimes for me, and I know you'll know this is true, but you even now still that I maybe am much more versed in projects and doing things. If I'm doing something I've never done before, I'll get I'll kind of like procrastinate it because I'm nervous about doing it and what it's gonna be like. And then as soon as you do it, like that was that bad. Like I can totally do that, and it just boosts your confidence and makes trying new things, putting yourself in uncomfortable positions like easier and easier.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's totally easier. Like thinking about trying some of these things before I met you, like I probably wouldn't have attempted them at all, you know. But it's hard when you're on the clock and you're like, hey, go do this. I'm like, okay, here we go.
SPEAKER_03Well, uh, I know it's hard because it's hard for us, but what's been your favorite project and why?
SPEAKER_01For sure, Brielle's. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Like out the gate.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, obviously, everything we've done since then hasn't been like not as good, but that one just like, like I said, I felt like it really changed me. And like to see, first of all, it was a huge bonding experience for you and I.
SPEAKER_02And you got to meet a lot of my friends too. So many friends, and it was a whole like group of women coming together doing something that usually wouldn't be women, and that was fun. There were like construction guy crews there, and they didn't have enough tools, and they'd be like, I see you have this shop here. No, they they literally borrowed yeah, they would borrow some of our like we were the big guy on site. I'm telling you. No, actually you have a you have a you have a nail guide?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yep, you can borrow it. And then we had to make sure they brought it back. Yep, yeah, yes, please. But to see like everyone a part of that project like come together was such a cool experience. And I've never seen a room completely transformed in five days like that.
SPEAKER_02That was like there were blind angels or something there helping. There were physical and we had a lot of help, even outside of like the five of us that were doing the building. There were so many other people there that something would come, they'd put it together, and so many miracles, don't you feel like oh my gosh, there were so many things that said they weren't gonna come and then were delivered, or we weren't sure if we were gonna be able to find the part, and then the tiny little local ace like had exactly what we needed. Or finding those shingles, yes, and and Kristen's husband being willing to drive across the valley to go get them. Yes, like everything really did just so many things came together for us, which was so many people, and it was it was a really extraordinary thing to be a part of because it wasn't only just our room, like we also got to walk every day and see the whole house, and it was all just like so emotional, like and then to get to see her and her family um afterwards, yeah, it's gonna make me emotional thinking about it too. But and then especially since then, even it was hard to know that she most likely liked that it was terminal. And um, I've never been in that situation before making a room for somebody that you know maybe wouldn't get a ton of time to enjoy it. But it's such a gift to watch even now as they're you know grieving and healing and spending time together that they've spent so much time in that room together. Feels like I don't know, it just feels so special to have been a part of it and get to like maybe lift or help in some like small way. That's a good choice.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if it can ever be top until it's the first one. No, yeah, and it also like you know, it it's like any child's dream, like that room is just like magical.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I with that project I only took took the trailer up, and I I actually still feel like I missed out hugely.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he was a I was really sad not being there for that one. So what's the craziest thing you've been asked to do?
SPEAKER_01I was that one had me stumped because I don't know, like with you building the fence, yeah, for sure. Yeah, like when you told me we were doing that, I was like I was I don't know what I I thought we were gonna be doing, me neither, but like every step of the way, I was just like, I don't know how this works. And we did it, we did it, and it's the prettiest fence I've ever seen. I didn't know I could be in love with fence, no, but I am every I just look at it with so much admiration and pride every day.
SPEAKER_02Pride, yeah, it's you can see it out the window, and every day I'm like, look at that view.
SPEAKER_03Well, craziest for me, one of the things that first was like, wow, that's amazing, was your drawings on the fence. Yes, your your plans, the you know, yeah. We've kind of talked about things, and yeah, and she asked you to sketch it out. And I I looked at them later that evening and I was like, oh man, I was freaking out to her. Like, this is amazing.
SPEAKER_02Yes, so and I was like, I know, she's incredible. I think the craziest thing I've asked you to do is film me in a Lorak suit and come out.
SPEAKER_01It's not even surprising, it's not even shocking. That's why we laughed so hard when I turned around.
SPEAKER_02You could see my underwear. It was funny.
SPEAKER_03Well, let me let me ask you this question. So we're jumping back a little bit, but um, but what uh what do you feel like past experiences helped you to be as amazing as you are at this job?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I think I don't know if I mentioned this, but I've like flipped furniture for years now, you know, working on my house, but I don't know, like mentally, I don't feel like I was like prepared for this job. I feel like it's like molded me, if that makes sense. Yeah. So I don't think like mentally there's something that I feel like was a prerequisite for this. Like I was debilitated by perfectionism and like procrastination and being overwhelmed. And so being thrown into this really has like made me grow more than I ever could. But yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, so for people that that struggle with those same type of things, how what would you recommend for that?
SPEAKER_01Just doing it. It's hard because like as women, I think there's less opportunities for us to learn how to do this stuff when like men, it's so common for them, like they helped their dad, you know, do this, or you know, and they naturally are kind of given power tools growing up. So I think it's easy to feel overwhelmed, but to just start. Like I look back at the things I did and I'm like, that was so bad. But like me too, yeah. And but I've learned so much, like just doing it, just do it. You can redo it, you can do it again. Yeah, like it's just doing it. You have to do it. It's taken the first step.
SPEAKER_03Well, and that's I mean, we're talking about building, but then that's the case with pretty much everything, right? Uh is yeah, the buildup in your head is always greater than the reality.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. And that's why I think finding a hobby or a career or something that pushes you to be out of that comfort zone and having to take that step is a it I think it's just like character building.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Cause for me, DIY started as a hobby, and I think that's why I got addicted to it. It's because of that, like how you feel when you accomplish something you had no idea you could do. And I'm sure there are a lot of other things like that. Totally. Any hobby, any hobby. And sometimes as adults, at least for me, you feel like you don't deserve a hobby. And you know, it I feel like that's why DIY maybe is one of the more common things because everyone has a home and they want to improve it anyways. But outside of that, there's so many things that you could do as an adult. You could sign up for uh, you know, an adult league sport or that or that. But I feel like we're not you kind of are encouraged in at least my brain, it's like I shouldn't do that. Like I should focus on other things. But those things really create character and having those things for yourself that force you to grow and try something new, I think they're really important.
SPEAKER_01100%. It's kind of something that's just focused on yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Something that maybe you get a lot of when you're a teenager and then they go away. And all those things it's easy to lose track of yourself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I it is everyone needs a hobby, like it's genuinely something that like refills my tank. And everyone should have something like that, like that makes your mind kind of go quiet.
SPEAKER_02So here's a question Do you still like DIYing when you DIY now for work? Do you like going home and DIYing too?
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. Oh, you should go follow her. She's building the craziest, coolest thing right now. I'm so proud of you. So nice. I can't wait to see it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I don't get sick of it at all. If anything, it just gets me excited. Like, I'm like, I'm excited to try out.
SPEAKER_02I have the skill. Now I can go use it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, when Scott taught me the hinges, and then I was like, I could do that. Yeah, I could do that. And then I was like, how I need to do something like right now that I can do that. You can use a make a cabinet. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And that's why I decided to retain the information. Describe what you're doing.
SPEAKER_02It's like a media console. But the one that you it's replicated off of a super expensive one from I think it's article.
SPEAKER_01It's like three grand if I wanted to buy it, but I think I got the wood for like 400.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited. It looks so good. That is awesome. Okay, here's some other questions. You can ask this one. I'm afraid.
SPEAKER_03You can be honest.
SPEAKER_01You can be honest. Yes. Well, it's not that you're like overly happy, but you're just like such a positive person. Thanks. Like, it is so hard to ever think of a time that you were like negative and Scott, too. Like very positive people. Yeah. And even when you're upset about something, you're just like, you say, Oh, this is frustrating. Move on. We're we're gone. We're over it now. Like it's just like, I'm mad. Okay, we're moving on. Like, you know, okay, gotta get this out. But yeah, you really are like just a pleasant person to be around. That's the truth.
SPEAKER_02I feel the same way about you. Yeah, love. I I it's so fun to get to work together. I feel like someone asked me the other day, is it really hard to have employees in your house? And I'm like, I feel like it would be hard if it was not the right person. But I just it's so fun.
SPEAKER_03That's and that's why it's so hard to find the right person.
SPEAKER_02Because you also have to feel comfortable. You have to feel like you can be yourself. And well, it's your home. Yeah, you know, exactly. Like and someone you can trust. Yeah. And so I felt that way um right off the bat. And so it just makes work more fun for me, less um lonely. Sometimes it's funny because it's like, oh, there are all these people that follow you, and it's a big number, but it can feel very lonely because when it's just yourself. And I'm I'm not really, I'm just interacting with the phone. But I now I get to bounce ideas and and I feel like it's better as a team. Anything if you have a good team ends up being better. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There's a quote that I like that's it's I don't even know who said it, but it's great things were never done by individuals, only by teams.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I love that. I love that. And you're a part of our team. Oh, that's so cute.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a lot of questions. What's your workout routine, your workout split? Oh, we have a funny story to say about this, though. Funny story. So I Jalen sometimes is like a stunt double because um I don't look as good as her, but from behind some, maybe at certain angles, somewhat similar. And I posted a video of Jalen putting up, but I mean, we're both in the videos all the time, but I posted a video of you from behind putting up some of the fence, and I just got a flood of DMs that was like, respectfully, girl, your booty's looking so good over and over again. Respectfully, what is your workout routine? Oh, Pilates is working. For you so much. And I just started screenshotting them all and sending him to Jalen. And I'm like, I'm like, I want to take credit, but I've got to tell them all that it's my assistant, not me.
SPEAKER_01That was actually so funny. And we have the matching headphones. We have the matching headphones. It probably is very confusing to me. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But I was like, you can you can body double for me anytime people are like, you look so good. Thank you. That is so funny. Yeah, that was hilarious. Let's see.
SPEAKER_03Was that anything you want to talk about?
SPEAKER_02As far as like oh, yeah, working round routine. No, no. No, that is something though that we have in common. I was worried because when you started, I was like, we're doing this weird health thing. We're on a health journey. And you actually were like, oh, I'm already really passionate about that. Yeah. Like we share that in common. Yeah, that's true. Pretty closely. Like the things that we eat and like our ideas along health. Yes. Like you're a very healthy individual. Sometimes you even go to the gym before you come and do physical labor at our house.
SPEAKER_01I know. I like I used to work out a lot more. And then I feel like since working for you, just because it's like such a physical job, not every day, but sometimes. So I definitely work out less now, like four days a week or three. But but I am passionate about food heals. And food is very powerful. And so I love that we have that in common. Should we share the funny Disneyland story?
SPEAKER_02Which one? Oh yeah, we can. We're at Disneyland, just Jay and I have a day. And she's like, Elise, I think I have a UTI. And I was like, oh no. Well, what do we need to do? And she was like, if I eat garlic right away, I'm like, well, we gotta, we gotta get some garlic. So we instacarted just a clove of garlic to the entrance of Disneyland.
SPEAKER_01And we walked out there and I just popped it in my mouth raw. And you shoved some other ones in your purse and we went through security and you were like, he literally had to open it. And I was like, don't like don't it's just a head of garlic.
SPEAKER_03It's the vampires don't work.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, I have some beliefs. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, he actually was like, my wife does that too, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. He was like, oh my gosh, yeah, no, I know. But I was like, I'll never forget this.
SPEAKER_02The guy getting out of his car for Instacart with a single, literally one head of garlic. Yeah. It's like, here's your garlic. Walk back inside. And it worked. We had a great rest of the day. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, he took some ibuprofen too, but yeah. That was funny. So funny. And we were like, is there anywhere in Disneyland that would sell garlic?
SPEAKER_02Couldn't find anywhere. Had to order it in. Okay. The next most there were so many questions about this is are you adopting one of the puppies? No.
SPEAKER_01See, why do they have to ask that? Because it just makes me want to. No, no. You're a cat person. I am a cat person. I love dogs too. Animal lover. I am an animal lover. But I think one day I will get a dog, but I think maybe after I have kids. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I think no, I think that's smart. I think for us, when you have kids and you get a dog, the dog grows up being used to being with kids all the time and usually does better. Yeah. With the kids and is used to their poking and pressing and doesn't sometimes then an older dog that then you have kids, they're grumpy about it. And they're like bugged. That's so I think it's a good.
SPEAKER_01And it's like a commitment, it really is. It is a puppy. And then a child is a commitment. So like one hurdle at a time. You can just help with ours. Ours will be yours. I know. That will be a great practice round for me. That's right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02We actually did have a lot of questions on where's Ellie? Because Ellie was my assistant before Jalen. Ellie or Jalen knows I love Ellie. We talked a lot. And I think that's part of like just what happens is having an assistant. And I the love I have for Ellie is so great. And Haley and all the other employees that I've had that have like, but Ellie, I I can she had a baby and she moved up to be near her family and she moved into the her next stage of life. I think she's a realtor now too. She's doing great things, and she's flipping her house that she just bought with her husband. So um, but yeah, that's kind of like it's hard because I would love for you to be my assistant forever. But but at the same time, like we we both see how incredible and amazing you are, and I don't I want more for you than that.
SPEAKER_03Speaking of, that was one of my questions is what are your um I don't know, ambitions or like big plans for the future?
SPEAKER_01Dreams, actually. Well, I think it would be cool to do content creation. I worked for my friend who's like a social media manager, and then I was doing kind of that at the same time that I was helping you. And so I feel like I've had a lot of training in that aspect, and then even just working with you, I never thought that I would want to do it, but I feel like you've really pushed me, like you could do it, you could do this, like, and which is so cool because how many people would gatekeep that?
SPEAKER_02Like, there's there's no gatekeeping, anyone could do it. I mean, yeah, there's plenty of room on the internet.
SPEAKER_01You push me, and like even Scott's told me, like, you could do it, like you know, and so I think that would be a dream of mine, like being able to work for myself is my ultimate dream, whatever that looks like. But you can do it, and you're gonna do it. That would be really cool if I could, but yeah, I think that's it.
SPEAKER_03That's amazing. Awesome. We we've been asking everybody this what is your key to happiness for everyone?
SPEAKER_01Creativity. I love that. That's a big one that I think I've learned this year is like when I'm not being creative, I feel like a shell of myself, and it's so important to have something that is an outlet for me, and it's therapeutic, honestly. So I think creativity. I love that. I love that answer. That is a good answer.
SPEAKER_03It's a great answer. It is therapeutic, like you say. I think you know, a lot of people we we we grow up creating a lot more in school and being imaginative and yeah, and we having fun. A lot of adults lose sight of that, and I think it is detrimental in many ways.
SPEAKER_02And it makes life lighter. It does when you are creative and you do silly things like planning a dog wedding. I was just gonna say that.
SPEAKER_01Like, how much joy is that giving us and the people?
SPEAKER_03And people. I've had so many people be like, oh, I I'm here for the dog wedding.
SPEAKER_02But I'm so glad you came on and all thank you for having me. This is so fun. Thanks for helping build the studio.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, get some use out of the work you put into the studio. That's right.
SPEAKER_02Um, but yeah, we're grateful for you. I tell Scott every day how grateful I am for you, and I'm so glad our cross, our paths crossed. Yeah, and that we get to work together now and be lifelong friends forever. And thanks for coming on the podcast. Always be your cheerleader, always. We will. Indeed.
SPEAKER_01Well, me too. I'm like your number one fan. I'm like engage repose on that. Oh, you're the best.
SPEAKER_02Well, thanks for being on the podcast.
SPEAKER_03Thanks for coming.
SPEAKER_02Thanks for having me. So fun. That was so funny. That was awesome.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, having Jalen on here was fantastic.
SPEAKER_02Fantastic.
SPEAKER_03So, time for the Trader Joe's bag. What are you most excited for in 2026?
SPEAKER_02Hmm. I think I was thinking about this today. I think I'm most excited for slowing down a little bit. 2025 was crazy, and I'm loved it, and I'm so proud of everything that we did and like getting our home to more of a place that I feel it feels more homey. But I'm excited to slow down a little bit more and maybe do some smaller projects. I'll have to cut back to this and remind myself to not. But um, I'm also excited to do some traveling. Traveling is my favorite thing. I just like I always as soon as I'm home from a trip, I'm planning the next trip. Yeah. I just I love traveling.
SPEAKER_03Trip planner extraordinaire. I love it. She loves it.
SPEAKER_02I've got a few planned with the girls.
SPEAKER_03I once heard that some people get more joy out of planning a trip than they actually get actually get out of the trip.
SPEAKER_02It's research based. It is that you get more happiness and excitement and like serotonin from planning the trip than actually being on the trip. You don't feel that way?
SPEAKER_03I don't feel that way. No.
SPEAKER_02You enjoy being on the trip more than planning it?
SPEAKER_03Absolutely being on the trip.
SPEAKER_02But do you do any of the planning?
SPEAKER_03I well, I've done planning, but not since we've been married. Yeah, since I mean, unless I'm going by myself, you just plan it.
SPEAKER_02It's true. I am a little bit of a control freak with planning too. So you do you you let me do my thing.
SPEAKER_03Go for it.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Next question. What's your favorite thing about each other?
SPEAKER_03Oh. Um, my favorite thing about you is being married to you.
SPEAKER_02That's kind of selfish. No, I'm just kidding.
SPEAKER_03What? Uh no. Uh no, my favorite thing about you is probably how incredibly talented you are in so many different ways. And uh I knew that. I've always known that. Uh now more people are knowing that, which is cool, but I've known it for the longest time. That was kidding. Besides your mom, I've known it for the longest time.
SPEAKER_02Um, I think my favorite thing about you is your genuine kindness. When I first started dating you, that was when I would be like, Oh, I'm dating Scott Hunter. People would be like, he is the nicest. That's always what I got from everybody. And you don't really have, you don't have an angry, upset bone in your body. And you're you're kind to everyone, you're kind to me, you're kind to our girls, you're patient. And and then probably set close second closest would just be you're a cheerleader for everybody. And you you love cheering on other people and their successes, and it really encourages like an environment of um non-judgment. Like in our home and in our relationship, you just you just see the best in people, and it's it's made you make me better.
SPEAKER_03Thank you. I was recruited as a true cheerleader many, many times, but I never was actually a cheerleader. Yeah, just walking down the hall. You, it'd be great to stand on your shoulders.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02Well, that was great.
SPEAKER_03Great, another great episode, hopefully.
SPEAKER_02Like, subscribe, comment, and until next time, have a happy day.
