5. Why Smart Advisors Are Cashing Out Without Walking Away

Most advisors assume succession means handing over the keys and walking out the door. But what if you could capture peak value for your practice right now and still show up for your clients on Monday morning?
In this episode, Darrell breaks down the "Sell and Stay" model, the fastest-growing exit strategy in the RIA M&A market. You'll learn how advisors like Robert are locking in competitive multiples while the market is at all-time highs, eliminating the catastrophic "what if" risk that leaves clients, staff, and families in limbo, and building a succession plan that keeps them in the advisor's seat until they decide it's time to step back.

Succession does not need to mean the end of the line. It doesn't need to be a sudden stop. And by the way, this model that I'm going to tell you about is growing like crazy. It's called the sell and stay model. And it allows you, the advisor, to monetize your practice, to take risk off the table, and to put in at the same time a catastrophic plan. You know, if that bus comes along. It takes the admin, the compliance part of the job off your plate while keeping you the confidant, the life advisor to your clients. And the most beautiful part? You leave when you are ready. You are in control of the timing. Hi, I'm Daryl with Advisor Hunt. Robert wasn't ready to retire, but he was paying attention. He liked the valuations he was hearing and wanted a plan in place in case something unexpected happened to him. That bus thing. So here's how it played out. Robert received a very competitive multiple, incentives to grow his practice, and a strong salary to continue to manage those client relationships. He got liquidity, reduced risk, a backup plan, you know, that bus thing, and a real answer when clients asked him about succession. And the best part? He basically set himself up with that thing called the easy button. When he's ready, he sticks up his hand, and that transition, the succession to the next generation, it's already built in. And this is why this sell and stay model is growing like wildfire in the RIA, MA market. In today's episode, we'll break it down into three parts. How sell and stay crystallizes value, maximizing outcomes, removes risk, and keeps you in control of your timing. 1. Sell and stay crystallizes value while market conditions are strong. You know, advisors apparently were not supposed to time the market, but I can tell you that market conditions have never been better for sellers. Never. When you execute sell and stay during these favorable conditions, markets at all-time highs, practice multiples at all-time highs, you capture peak value while staying in the game. So back to Robert, he secured a high multiple for his business while keeping his role as advisor. This approach lets advisors monetize their hard work when the market is strong rather than leaving value on the table. Second point sell and stay removes risk for you and for your clients. Back to that bus thing. And this is a justifiable concern. What happens if? If that big if happens, it's not just clients in limbo. I mean, everybody's replaceable, we know that. Do we need to make it tough? Months of uncertainty, concern about their financial security, having a choice foisted on them, and don't forget about your staff. And how will your family get the value or whoever you want to pass that value to? This entire huge question mark, this huge risk is taken off the table with the sell and stay model. It is really a beautiful succession. You transfer ownership of the practice and you maintain the relationships. You know, the best part of the job. Clients lose uncertainty and you drop all kinds of risk. It's a plan A and a plan B all in one. Point three, sell and stay done right keeps you in control. Sell and stay isn't just about money, it's about staying in control. Flexibility, lifestyle, timing on your terms. Advisors continue serving clients and plan their tyrant around their own personal goals. Done right, it maximizes both financial and lifestyle outcomes, providing peace of mind, liquidity, and the ability to step back on your own terms. So the question to ask, can I monetize now when the markets, that's the stock markets and the MA market, are on my side? Can I eliminate that risk of the big what if, that bus thing? And can I continue in the best part of the job, being a financial advisor, being a confidant, a coach, and leave when I'm ready? With the right sell and stay, you stay in control and your clients stay confident. If you'd like to explore how a sell and stay can work for you, click the link below to connect with us.
