00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:14.639 Am I someone who is motivated by sincerity and love, or am I just the priest on the street? 00:06:16.639 --> 00:06:18.560 Full of empty religion. 00:06:22.720 --> 00:06:36.720 In Corinth, the city to which Paul is riding, uh, in the Corinthian church, uh, things between Paul and the Christians in the church had gotten rather tense. 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:39.759 They had gotten strained. 00:06:40.639 --> 00:06:51.439 You see, there were there were issues in the church, um, particular uh sins, particular sexual sins that were going on in the church. 00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:55.680 And Paul had written a uh a letter. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:06.399 Uh he uh talks about it uh in chapter two, where he talks about uh this painful letter that he sent. 00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:22.480 He had sent this letter and um and said that he was going to come and visit them, that he was going to uh deal with the situation. 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:35.199 But what had also happened is that uh his plans changed, and so the Corinthians thought that Paul was being two-faced. 00:07:35.839 --> 00:07:40.720 They thought that Paul was more empty religion, that he was saying one thing and doing another. 00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:46.319 We all uh dislike two-faced people, don't we? 00:07:46.879 --> 00:07:53.519 And they thought that Paul was being two-faced, that he was saying yes with one breath and no with the next. 00:07:54.240 --> 00:08:01.680 And so they have called into character, or called into question rather, his character and his motives. 00:08:02.639 --> 00:08:13.360 Paul writes this passage to explain what was going on, why he did what he did, and what his motives were. 00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:25.120 And what we see there is that the grace of God to the Christian goes right to the root of who we are, it goes right to the motive. 00:08:25.839 --> 00:08:28.959 It goes right to the motives of why we act the way we do. 00:08:30.800 --> 00:08:40.559 So Paul begins by showing them what his motives were throughout his interactions with them. 00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:42.480 Let's look at that together. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:49.279 What were Paul's motives throughout his interactions with the Christian with the Christian? 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:52.159 Have a look at uh at verse 12. 00:08:52.320 --> 00:09:04.080 Uh verse 12 he says, uh, for our boast, this isn't that he's kind of bigging himself up, this is just a way of uh look, I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you as plainly and as fully and as simply as possible how I was acting. 00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:05.200 That's what he's saying by boast. 00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:10.879 For our boast is this, uh, the testimony of our conscience is that I swear I'm telling the truth with this. 00:09:11.039 --> 00:09:24.720 The testimony of our conscience that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom, but by the grace of God and supremely so towards you. 00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:27.039 Begins of this word simplicity. 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:33.200 He wasn't he wasn't doing this double talk, he wasn't saying yes with one breath and and no with another. 00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:40.799 He was he was plain spoken in that he was simply laying out what his intentions were. 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:44.000 He emphasizes that again in verse uh 17. 00:09:44.159 --> 00:09:47.759 Have a look at it again if you've got it open on your phone, if you've got a Bible in front of you. 00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:49.919 He asked this question, he says, Was I vacillating? 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:52.320 Vacillating just means to swing back and forth. 00:09:52.480 --> 00:09:56.879 Was I was I vacillating when I wanted to do this when I made my plans? 00:09:56.960 --> 00:09:59.279 Do I make my plans according to the flesh? 00:09:59.360 --> 00:10:03.440 Uh, ready to say yes, yes, and no, no, at the same time. 00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:06.159 He asked this rhetorical question that implies the answer. 00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:08.639 No, and that's what he'll go on to explain. 00:10:08.799 --> 00:10:23.440 We'll look at verse 18 in a second because it's verse 18 uh and uh and 19 and 20 are are basically the crux of the of the whole passage and the most complicated part, but welcome to an insight into my wing. 00:10:23.679 --> 00:10:32.559 But for now, he was speaking plainly with godly sincerity that comes from where? 00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:43.360 Verse 12 again, that comes from the grace of God, not by earthly wisdom, simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom, but by the grace of God. 00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:55.600 He wasn't looking at the situation from a worldly perspective about what was the most convenient or advantageous for him, what was the best option for him from a worldly perspective. 00:10:55.840 --> 00:11:01.919 He was seeking to speak and act simply and transparently. 00:11:05.279 --> 00:11:15.279 His first motive was that Paul was acting with integrity, simple, clear speech. 00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:24.559 Saying yes and meaning yes, saying no and meaning no, not flip-flopping or keeping one's options open. 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:33.840 But coupled with this integrity, Paul is also motivated by love. 00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:43.120 His desire, verse 15, was to come to them in order to be a blessing. 00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:47.919 Uh, because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you so that you might have a second experience of grace. 00:11:48.080 --> 00:11:52.159 He wants to come and encourage them and be a blessing to them. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:06.480 He goes on and explains uh later that he stayed away because he didn't want to cause them more pain. 00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:15.440 Verse 23 but I call God to witness against me, it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:20.399 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy. 00:12:21.039 --> 00:12:30.320 And if we were to to read on into the start of chapter two, uh, chapter two, verse one, for I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:34.399 For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad, but the one that I have pained? 00:12:34.559 --> 00:12:38.720 So he stayed away because he didn't want to inflict them more harm. 00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:43.039 He knows that they uh that the letter that he wrote was hard for them to take. 00:12:43.200 --> 00:12:51.840 And he said that he wanted to go in that letter, and then he determined actually the most loving thing to do would be to stay away. 00:12:52.320 --> 00:13:23.120 You see, in the uh in the honor-shame culture of Corinth, to point out that someone was in sin, to point out that someone was wrong, and that the whole church had let it happen, was something that was deeply shaming, even for those who were followers of Jesus, those new Christians who still had those cultural ideas uh rattling around in their head. 00:13:23.600 --> 00:13:25.279 They felt ashamed. 00:13:27.440 --> 00:13:32.960 And so Paul in 2 verse 1 wants to avoid another painful visit. 00:13:33.600 --> 00:13:36.480 The last one was painful enough, apparently. 00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:38.480 So he stayed away. 00:13:39.519 --> 00:13:53.039 He stayed away, not because Paul was giving them the he wasn't giving them the silent treatment, he wasn't withdrawing uh his presence in order to kind of look down his nose at them as he said, I wasn't trying to lord it over you. 00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:13.200 I was giving you the space to process what what had gone on rather than me coming in again and being seen as causing more pain, or you being more ashamed by my being there. 00:14:17.120 --> 00:14:20.960 He wasn't sending them to their room like petulant children. 00:14:21.279 --> 00:14:23.120 No, he loves them. 00:14:23.519 --> 00:14:36.000 Everything he does comes from a love for them, it comes from the desire to maximize their joy and to establish them firm in the faith. 00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:37.200 That's verse 24. 00:14:37.279 --> 00:14:41.840 Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy. 00:14:42.480 --> 00:14:45.600 For you stand firm in your faith. 00:14:45.759 --> 00:14:47.440 That's what he wants. 00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:53.120 So he gave them space and is writing this letter to explain. 00:14:54.799 --> 00:15:06.159 But that they could process what has happened, that they could take action before he came rather than doing it in the in the intensity of his presence there with them. 00:15:07.679 --> 00:15:10.799 Paul is motivated by two things. 00:15:11.200 --> 00:15:16.639 He is motivated by integrity, simple speech, not vacillating. 00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:19.200 And he is motivated by love. 00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:22.799 Love tempers his his actions. 00:15:22.960 --> 00:15:27.679 He wants to do the most maximally loving thing for them. 00:15:30.960 --> 00:15:39.679 A couple of uh reflections on this, on these motives, and on what Paul has said here. 00:15:40.559 --> 00:15:50.799 First, this is what happens when the grace of God reboots your motives. 00:15:52.639 --> 00:16:25.519 We all go through life uh with uh with mixed motives, and perhaps before we were followers of Jesus, we were motivated a lot by self-service, doing that thing that advantages advantaged us the most, doing that thing that uh left us most comfortable, not really considering other people's feelings, doing what made us happy. 00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:31.360 The grace of God reboots our motives. 00:16:33.279 --> 00:16:48.399 It makes us be motivated not by what we want, not by what we think is best for us or most loving for ourselves, or most comfortable for ourselves. 00:16:51.039 --> 00:17:02.240 The grace of God reboots our motives so that we consider the needs of others, that we look at the situation and think, okay, what is the how can I be a blessing here? 00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:14.000 The motives of the Christian life are to be transparency, integrity, and love. 00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:19.440 And we see how important this is here. 00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:28.240 If Paul had been two-faced, the reputation of the gospel would have been irreparably damaged in Corinth. 00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:37.759 If Paul really had been saying yes, yes, and no, no, and if he'd just written back and said, Well, actually, you knew what I'm in charge, and uh what I say goes. 00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:49.039 And yeah, I changed my mind because uh because I had a better offer over here, the work of the gospel in Corinth would have been done. 00:17:53.839 --> 00:18:12.720 So as we think about our motives, and as we think about the integrity which we need to cultivate by the grace of God, it's not it's not a simple matter of saying, uh, you know, if you say you're gonna do something, make sure that you do it. 00:18:12.880 --> 00:18:17.759 Uh, if you say that you're gonna go somewhere, make sure that you go, make sure that your yes is yes and that your no is no back. 00:18:17.920 --> 00:18:21.200 That we we looked at that in the in the Sermon on the Mind, didn't we? 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:29.039 Can seem like a very kind of surface level thing, but actually what was going on is that the reputation of the gospel is at stake. 00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:37.920 Because the Corinthian Christians were asking the question of is this just more empty religion? 00:18:39.200 --> 00:19:10.720 The easiest way for us to show the world that what we are, what we are following is just more empty religion is when we speak out of both sides of our mouth when we lack integrity, and so when we are tempted to blow something off because it inconveniences us, stop and think what am I communicating here? 00:19:15.119 --> 00:19:39.759 The second reflection uh is just kind of on a uh on a kind of higher level, just to think for a second about the kind of leader Paul is here, the way that he is dealing with them, how gently and mercifully he is speaking to them and dealing with them. 00:19:40.640 --> 00:19:48.319 You know, Paul has been, it's not like Paul has been sitting in some sort of Mediterranean spa, you know, all around the Aegean. 00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:50.079 Like that's not what was happening. 00:19:50.319 --> 00:19:57.440 You know, Paul wasn't preferring his comfort uh over the over the blessing of uh of the Corinthian Christians. 00:19:57.519 --> 00:20:06.799 He was he was suffering, he was being beaten, and you know, there's a there was a riot in Ephesus, he was persecuted and arrested, he was stoned, he was shipwrecked. 00:20:08.319 --> 00:20:13.200 And the Corinthian Christians don't seem to mention any of that. 00:20:13.839 --> 00:20:35.200 You know, they kind of lost sight of all of uh all of those things, and they were they were thinking about themselves, they were thinking about uh their uh their own situation, and so we're thinking the worst of Paul, and we're kind of whining to him, but Paul doesn't come back and go, Hey, do you know what, guys? 00:20:35.359 --> 00:20:41.279 If you had any idea what I had been through, you know, why don't you just sit down and shut up? 00:20:41.440 --> 00:20:45.920 That is not what he says, that is not where he's coming from. 00:20:46.720 --> 00:20:52.480 He responds with such grace, such patience. 00:20:54.319 --> 00:20:55.920 And he explains. 00:20:56.720 --> 00:21:01.839 He explains his thinking, explains what has happened, he explains why he did what he did. 00:21:09.039 --> 00:21:16.960 Leaders probably in all of life, but certainly in the church, would do well to embody more mercy. 00:21:22.079 --> 00:21:37.599 A good godly leader absorbs hurts and he meets immaturity with both gentleness and firmness. 00:21:41.440 --> 00:21:50.240 He knows when to step back, when to not overly burden people, when to extend them grace. 00:21:51.039 --> 00:21:51.359 See? 00:22:32.960 --> 00:22:34.480 Where do they come from? 00:22:34.960 --> 00:22:48.640 Well, we get into the core of the passage, and what we see there is that Paul's heart towards the Christians was undivided because God's heart was undivided. 00:22:48.960 --> 00:22:52.960 He was seeking to embody God's heart to them. 00:22:53.519 --> 00:22:59.440 Have a look with me at verse 17 down to the first half of verse 20. 00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:04.000 Was I vacillating when I said when I wanted to do this? 00:23:04.160 --> 00:23:06.000 Do I make my plans according to the flesh? 00:23:06.160 --> 00:23:09.200 Ready to say yes, yes, and no, no at the same time. 00:23:10.319 --> 00:23:17.519 As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been yes and no. 00:23:17.680 --> 00:23:29.519 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Sylvanas and Timothy and I, was not yes and no, but in him it is always yes. 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:32.880 For the promises of God find their yes in him. 00:23:33.279 --> 00:23:38.160 That is why it is through him that we utter our amen to the glory of God. 00:23:38.400 --> 00:23:39.359 I read a little bit too far. 00:23:39.440 --> 00:23:42.079 We'll get to the Amen bit in a second. 00:23:43.920 --> 00:23:50.240 When Paul said yes to seeing them again, he did so fully. 00:23:50.559 --> 00:23:55.359 He did so with full intention that he would do. 00:23:56.079 --> 00:24:03.039 In a sense, he's saying that his heart for them has always been yes. 00:24:04.720 --> 00:24:12.720 Yes to their holiness, yes to their progress and joy in the gospel, yes to their growth in godliness. 00:24:13.279 --> 00:24:26.640 And all of that was resting on the foundation of God's enduring faithfulness, of God's yes to the Corinthian Christians that comes in Jesus. 00:24:29.039 --> 00:25:07.920 Paul had made his plan with the best of intentions, and now he lifts their eyes, he lifts their perspective and says that even though things changed in an earthly sense, in terms of the plans that we were putting together, that we did so with integrity, that even though those plans changed, they changed because of, first of all, uh his love for them, but they do not thwart God's unchanging plan. 00:25:08.880 --> 00:25:22.079 He's saying this, remember the promises of God are never thwarted by changing circumstances, that his promises are always yes in Christ. 00:25:23.039 --> 00:25:28.319 That I determined differently upon reflection out of love for you. 00:25:32.319 --> 00:25:38.880 But I did so knowing that God is enduringly faithful towards you. 00:25:42.319 --> 00:25:50.400 God's promises to you, to the Christian, are always yes. 00:25:51.759 --> 00:26:02.799 If you belong to Jesus by faith, then everything God could possibly give you for your good has already been signed over to your account. 00:26:05.279 --> 00:26:07.680 This is the great promise of the gospel. 00:26:08.160 --> 00:26:17.839 God's heart is not divided towards the sinner who comes to faith in Jesus. 00:26:21.680 --> 00:26:34.720 When we in our sin and brokenness come to Jesus by faith, what we hear from God our Father is yes. 00:26:37.359 --> 00:26:38.720 Will you love me? 00:27:02.640 --> 00:27:03.279 Yes. 00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:12.240 Those are the unchanging plans and promises of God to the Christian. 00:27:14.880 --> 00:27:21.599 Paul is resting on those for himself and for these Corinthian believers. 00:27:25.599 --> 00:27:34.559 God's yes to us in Jesus transcends the changing circumstances that we find ourselves in. 00:27:35.440 --> 00:27:48.400 What's more, Paul's own change came from a dependence on God's faithfulness to them and a desire to show them more grace, more love. 00:27:54.720 --> 00:27:58.720 This couldn't be any further removed from empty religion. 00:28:02.559 --> 00:28:06.720 God's yes to us in Jesus is not empty. 00:28:08.240 --> 00:28:11.200 Our God does not say yes and no. 00:28:12.319 --> 00:28:14.559 He is enduringly faithful. 00:28:16.079 --> 00:28:27.039 This is not empty religion, it is full, full of grace, full of love, full of integrity, full of compassion and kindness. 00:28:30.480 --> 00:28:33.920 This is what Paul points us towards this morning. 00:28:34.000 --> 00:28:45.119 This is what Paul was seeking to embody in his life, and what he encourages us to live in and live out in our actions. 00:28:50.160 --> 00:29:12.640 Finally, Paul wants to kind of try and bring them back together and show them the ground of their uh of their unity, because uh, as you know, uh, if you've ever been in a in an argument uh with anyone, uh and it's it's kind of drawing to a close, uh, you know that resolution is uh is on the horizon. 00:29:12.960 --> 00:29:18.960 The argument always kind of uh pivots towards this question of well, where do we go from here? 00:29:19.599 --> 00:29:27.839 How do we come back together and uh and move forward together so that we don't fracture apart again? 00:29:28.079 --> 00:29:30.720 And Paul seeks to answer that question. 00:29:30.799 --> 00:29:35.279 He said, No, no, don't forget what unites us. 00:29:36.319 --> 00:29:46.480 That's how we move forward, that's how we reconcile uh these these two parties, and that's how we reconcile as Christians, as believers in in city churches. 00:29:46.559 --> 00:29:49.200 We remember what unites us. 00:29:49.519 --> 00:29:55.599 Paul points out the bonds of unity that that exists between them, and he does it in in two ways. 00:29:56.160 --> 00:30:05.200 First of all, he points them to their shared common ground, their shared common ground, their shared faith in the gospel. 00:30:05.359 --> 00:30:26.079 That's what he means by verse 20, when he when he goes from talking about the promises of God that find their yes in him, that is Jesus, to 2020 B, he says, This is why it is through him that we utter our amen to God for his glory. 00:30:28.720 --> 00:30:38.880 Just as God has said yes to the Christian, so the Christian utters his yes or her yes back to God. 00:30:39.680 --> 00:30:48.960 Just as God has said yes to them in Christ, so the Christian says yes, that's Amen to God by faith. 00:30:54.720 --> 00:31:05.039 Secondly, he shows them that God is the one who has established the believers together. 00:31:05.200 --> 00:31:18.160 Look at verse 21, and it is God who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. 00:31:18.240 --> 00:31:25.519 He says, Look, God has done this for us all, not just me, Paul the Apostle, but for you, Corinthian believers. 00:31:25.839 --> 00:31:32.160 He has done this so that we might be together, so that we might be united. 00:31:33.759 --> 00:31:40.880 God has made them all part of his unfolding and unchanging plan, and he has guaranteed to preserve them to the end. 00:31:40.960 --> 00:31:41.759 How has he done that?
