00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:53.600 Uh what is the Christian response? 00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:56.319 Well, uh historically Christians have done several things. 00:04:56.399 --> 00:05:08.800 Uh, Christians have either uh hidden away, you know, you pull up the pull up the drawbridge, you put a call out to uh to fellow Christians, uh, let's go to city church, it's a safe place, don't we get tainted by the world? 00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:16.399 Come on in, we'll shut the doors, uh, we'll we'll keep everybody safe from the uh from the outside and from sin. 00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:17.839 It's out there. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.199 And so we need to hide away from all of those things. 00:05:21.439 --> 00:05:30.399 Or another response to to the cultural challenges is that uh is that Christians uh go on a go on a charm offensive. 00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:37.279 Uh we want to affirm everything that the culture is doing, affirm everything that uh that everybody else around us believe. 00:05:37.439 --> 00:05:45.439 Uh we want to be seen cool uh by the world around us, by the political class, by the entertainment class. 00:05:45.600 --> 00:05:50.160 Oh look, they say they follow Jesus, but actually, look, they're really cool. 00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:52.240 Uh who would have thought? 00:05:52.560 --> 00:05:58.399 And neither of those is is true, is the way to go. 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:04.560 No, the answer is neither of those approaches, because neither of those approaches is in the way of obedience. 00:06:04.639 --> 00:06:17.360 We don't want to be constantly hiding ourselves away or constantly confronting the culture in an antagonistic way, but nor do we just simply receive everything that the culture is making and throws at us and believes wholesale. 00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:33.279 Uh, we do a mixture, we are called rather to be a different culture or a counterculture, but not just a counterculture for our own sake. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:39.199 We are called by Jesus to be a counterculture for the common good. 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:53.279 If you want to don't only do sermon titles, but if you want a title of the sermon of this passage or the big idea is that Christians are a counterculture for the common good. 00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:33.040 Great, we're here. 00:07:33.360 --> 00:08:05.439 Uh the flow from the beatitudes into this passage teaches us one thing that if we are living out the beatitudes, that is, uh, meekness, spiritual poverty, uh, mercifulness, peacemaker uh attitude in our relationships, one of the things that becomes clear is if if that is the culture of the church, if that's the culture of the Christian community, you cannot help but be salt in the culture. 00:08:05.600 --> 00:08:12.399 You you will inevitably be a light that cannot be hidden. 00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:23.040 We are to practice, therefore, and to cultivate the beatitudes in our individual lives and in our lives as a as a community of faith. 00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:26.240 Yes, we noted that the beatitudes are all of grace. 00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:28.959 And you might think, well, it's all of grace, I can't do anything about it. 00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:31.040 Uh, I've got I've got nothing in myself. 00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:38.320 No, no, that's a that would be a misunderstanding because you have the Holy Spirit now if you are trusting in Jesus. 00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:54.080 That means that by his grace, God has poured himself into you to enable you to cultivate these sorts of meekness, a hunger and say, Well, I've got no health and no strength in and not myself, so I can't do anything, so I'm just gonna let God do it. 00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:54.799 No, no, no. 00:08:54.879 --> 00:09:04.320 He's given us the spirit, and so we strive to be these things, and when we are those things, we will be salt and light in the world. 00:09:04.559 --> 00:09:11.600 In this section, Jesus uses these two main metaphors, and so we're gonna look at the two metaphors of salt and light in turn. 00:09:22.480 --> 00:09:30.399 In the ancient world, salt uh and today salt was used as a seasoning, uh, and that teaches us something about what it means to be salt in the world. 00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:36.480 We want to be kind of a flavor enhancement in terms of our in terms of our relationships. 00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:40.720 Uh, they want to be interesting in our in our interactions with people. 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:46.000 But uh the chief use of salt in the ancient world was as a preservative, right? 00:09:46.320 --> 00:10:04.399 Uh they didn't have refrigeration, so instead of uh going to the fridge uh for their meat, they would uh pack it with salt, they would put salt on it, and the salt preserved the meat, it prevented the decay of the meat, and that I think is what Jesus is drawing on. 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:11.519 When Jesus says that the Christians are the salt of the earth, he is identifying two things for us. 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:30.559 The first thing that Jesus is pointing out is that there is a moral decay that happened that is happening in the world that always happens in every generation, in every culture, there is a moral downward spiral that happens, a moral degradation. 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:36.080 That's the first thing that he is identifying by inference. 00:10:36.320 --> 00:10:57.039 And the second thing that Jesus is therefore saying is that Christians, as they go about their lives, as they go out into the world, that they help to stop and to stem that moral putrefacation, that moral decay and degradation. 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:15.440 Jesus is saying that that we are to go into the world and to live in a way that preserves and accentuates the good that is there, that puts more good into, it draws more good out of the world. 00:11:15.600 --> 00:11:24.080 And so we don't want to be just Christians that are uh that are that are there in our in our churchy cupboard, uh in our little salt cellar, all packed together. 00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:30.879 We want to be uh shaken out all over the world, in our in our families, in our classmates, in our work relationships. 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:42.720 We want to be everywhere so that we bring this this seasoning, this preserving quality to to the world, to our relationships. 00:11:43.600 --> 00:11:44.080 How? 00:11:52.559 --> 00:11:55.279 Like I think that might seem kind of fairly overwhelming. 00:11:55.360 --> 00:12:12.799 And maybe some of us will be involved in uh in corridors of power, maybe some of us will uh will be involved in uh in great philanthropic and charitable and uh and and justice-oriented endeavors, and and that is absolutely what it means to be salt in the world. 00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:16.720 But what about uh for for the rest of us? 00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:18.240 How can we all be salt? 00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:21.519 Well, let's think about uh let's think about one way. 00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:25.759 Human relationships are always blowing up. 00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:27.120 Have you experienced that? 00:12:27.279 --> 00:12:36.639 Have you experienced a human relationship that has in the past blown up or is in the process of blowing up, or you've observed it? 00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:45.840 Uh, this kind of detonation of a uh of a relationship in a family or uh between friends, human relationships are always blowing up. 00:12:45.919 --> 00:12:57.279 People get upset, they fire off a nasty, ill-conceived, not well thought through text or email, and it's received badly. 00:12:57.519 --> 00:13:01.840 People get into an argument, they walk away from from one another. 00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:08.080 Christians Christians don't do that. 00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:14.320 To be sold is that we don't do that. 00:13:15.600 --> 00:13:19.519 We don't detonate relationships. 00:13:20.320 --> 00:13:20.879 Why? 00:15:57.360 --> 00:15:59.200 What does it mean to lose salt? 00:15:59.360 --> 00:16:07.039 Well, it's true that sodium chloride cannot be anything but sodium chloride. 00:16:08.080 --> 00:16:10.399 You could mix it with a bucket of sand. 00:16:12.399 --> 00:16:16.720 You can mix it with a but a bucket of sand and then it would be useless. 00:16:17.840 --> 00:16:21.360 You don't want to put that on your meat, it would be indistinguishable. 00:16:21.919 --> 00:16:27.519 You couldn't pick out the salt grains from the sand grains. 00:16:30.159 --> 00:16:52.320 If you wanted to kind of uh further uh understanding, one of the things that maybe Jesus is getting at is the idea that uh is that that salt in the ancient world was actually impure, it was kind of a mixture of kind of uh kind of rock and salt, or kind of sandy things and salt, and the salt might kind of leach out from it, and therefore it loses its saltiness. 00:16:52.399 --> 00:16:54.080 That might be what it what he's getting at. 00:16:54.240 --> 00:17:44.079 But the point is clear is that the if we become indistinguishable from the world around us, if we that is, if we act in a non-beatitudes way, we're proud and haughty rather than poor in spirit, we're we're entitled and arrogant rather than mimick, we're a temperature raiser rather than a peacemaker, we sow division rather than hunger hungering and thirsting for righteousness, then although we profess the name of Jesus, we are not living like his followers, we are not living like salt in the world, we are not being a Christian counterculture for the common good. 00:17:45.039 --> 00:17:48.400 The second metaphor that he uses is that of light. 00:17:48.640 --> 00:17:52.000 Look at verse 14, you are the light of the world. 00:17:52.240 --> 00:17:53.680 I just pause there. 00:17:53.920 --> 00:17:56.880 He says in both 13 and 14, you are. 00:17:57.440 --> 00:18:04.799 You are this is not, this is not try harder, Christian, work harder. 00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:13.039 No, no, Jesus is saying, you are this, so be this, you are light, so let your light shine before men. 00:18:13.279 --> 00:18:19.279 You are salt, so get out into the into the world and be preservative. 00:18:19.519 --> 00:18:22.400 That is your identity as a follower of Jesus. 00:18:22.559 --> 00:18:27.599 Jesus, Jesus, you are salt, you are light. 00:18:27.920 --> 00:18:31.440 God has made you that by faith in Jesus. 00:18:31.599 --> 00:18:33.119 You are the light of the world. 00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:44.960 He says, verse 14, a city set on a hill cannot be hidden, nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, put on a stand, and it gives light to the whole house. 00:18:46.160 --> 00:18:58.960 In the same way that the world needs salty Christians because the world is morally decaying, so too, in the same way, it needs Christians who are light. 00:18:59.440 --> 00:18:59.839 Why? 00:19:00.720 --> 00:19:07.279 Because the world is dark, there is darkness in our world. 00:19:08.559 --> 00:19:10.240 We see that, don't we? 00:19:10.400 --> 00:19:12.319 That's not a surprise. 00:19:12.480 --> 00:19:16.400 We see the ways in which uh people treat one another. 00:19:17.359 --> 00:19:26.480 We see in our news apps and on websites, maybe even read it in a newspaper if that's the kind of thing that you do. 00:19:27.119 --> 00:19:33.519 That the world is a dark place, and Jesus says you are the light of the world. 00:19:33.680 --> 00:19:39.839 And think about how amazing that is because one of the I am sayings in John's gospel is that Jesus says, I am the light of the world. 00:19:39.920 --> 00:19:42.319 And so there's a there's a family resemblance there. 00:19:42.559 --> 00:19:47.680 We are light because we uh we radiate his light. 00:19:47.759 --> 00:19:51.599 It's a it's almost as though he is the sun and we're the we're the moon. 00:19:51.759 --> 00:19:57.599 Uh we are reflecting his light into into the world. 00:19:58.880 --> 00:20:03.680 He then goes on to say that a city on a hill cannot be hidden. 00:20:03.839 --> 00:20:22.880 Jesus here is not mixing his metaphors, he's actually pointing out something really important, and that is to be the light of the world is not something that we do in splendid isolation, it's something that we do as a community. 00:20:25.599 --> 00:20:38.000 Imagine pitch darkness, and you light a single candle, and and it will give a surprising amount of light for those who are near it, for those who are up close. 00:20:40.400 --> 00:20:58.480 But imagine being outside in that pitch darkness, and there is a city a hundred miles away, and it can still be seen because you can see its light projected upwards, reflecting off the clouds. 00:20:58.720 --> 00:21:09.680 You know that it's there, and it just pushes back the darkness just enough that you can make your way clear to that city. 00:21:14.880 --> 00:21:19.759 To be the light of the world is to be part of the city. 00:21:19.839 --> 00:21:26.799 You cannot be the light of the world on your own because you cannot be a city on your own. 00:21:29.359 --> 00:21:35.039 We are the light of the world because we are part of a community. 00:21:37.359 --> 00:21:39.440 That is what the gospel creates. 00:21:39.680 --> 00:21:49.440 The gospel creates a light like community, a community of believers that sheds its light into a dark world. 00:21:52.640 --> 00:21:53.759 How does it do that?
