Welcome to I Used To Be Fun, the podcast about remembering who you were before life got so serious. I'm Annmarie Boyle, author, creativity Instigator and Recovering Overachiever. And each week we explore how reconnecting to creativity and play helps us feel more alive, inspired, and like ourselves again. So set down the to-do list. Grab a cup of coffee and let's go find some fun.

Annmarie

So here's the thing. Somewhere between doing everything you were supposed to do, the responsible choices, the practical paths, the caretaking, the career building, the emotional labor of holding up entire households, and the mysterious appearance of neck waddle. Many of us looked up and thought, wait, I used to be fun. What happened?

Annmarie

You don't feel like you anymore, not the way you once did. You're smart, capable, nurturing, and wildly competent, but you're also overextended and wondering when life got so serious, you don't resent the life you've built. You're proud of it. At 2:00 AM while your brain is rehashing the day and you're ordering sensible shoes online, a thought creeps in, where did the playful, creative, imaginative, joyful parts of me go? This space, this podcast is where we go. Looking for her.

Annmarie

Hi, I'm Annmarie Boyle, author, chronic overthinker, recovering overachiever and Creativity Instigator. And I need to find my way back to fun, too. Yes, creativity is central to my life. Whether it's my personal obsession with fabric, art supplies, and interior design, or my professional work as an author, I've always been a maker. And yes, I've always been a big believer in play, and not just for kids, but for all of us. But even with all that, I still managed to lose parts of myself inside the to-do lists, the grocery store runs and the 47 tabs open in my brain. I want to find that fun person again, but I don't want to go looking for her alone. There's too much isolation in this world already.

Annmarie

So I decided to create a space for real conversations with other women, a place where we can share ideas, lift each other up. Remind each other that we're not the only ones who feel this way. Now I'm not an expert on the science of creativity or play, but here is what I'm good at. I'm good at holding space for others. I'm good at signing off on permission slips, and I'm really good at growing ideas.

Annmarie

So that's what we're going to do here together. Each week we're going to chat about things like how creativity can be your secret source of energy when you're running on empty, or what to do when life starts feeling a little too beige. We're gonna explore gentle ways to wake up those parts of yourself you haven't visited in years because they're still in there, I promise. And speaking of waking things up, let's talk about finding your laugh again, not the polite one, the real one. You know, the one that makes strangers turn around in restaurants.

Annmarie

We will also work on redefining fun on our own terms, because who says it has to look like anyone else's and here's how it's going to work: some episodes, it'll just be me sharing what I'm learning and unlearning and probably overthinking things. But most of the time I'll be sitting down with real women, not influencers, not celebrities. Just smart, funny, creative women figuring it out like the rest of us. And every now and then I'll bring in an expert to dig a little deeper into that science of play and creativity. So if you're missing the version of yourself who felt playful, imaginative, and free, pull up one of the comfy chairs we've got coffee, conversation, and zero judgment about whether you showed up in yoga pants. There's always room for one more at this table. So hit follow, subscribe, or whatever button is available to you, and let's go find your fun.
