Draft day one and Broncos and other Denver sports talk
Good morning and welcome to Thursday, April 23rd. Draft Day. This is T-Bone with One Sport, One Fan, All Game Episode 1. So today we're going to talk about some Broncos, some draft stuff, because today is round one of the draft in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We'll do a little bit of hockey. We'll do some nuggets basketball and kind of end it up here with the Rockies that have started their season. So first off, welcome to day one of Draft Day. People's lives will be quite changing today. We will see if the Las Vegas Raiders do wind up picking number one overall, like everyone in the NFL world believes that they will. The other thing is obviously we know the Jets will probably pick. We'll stay at two, one, three, four, five, six, probably up until ten. That's when you might see some teams trading up. There are rumors that the New Orleans, the Saints want to trade up, the Chiefs want to trade up, Cincinnati might want to trade up. The Browns are going to try to trade up the one that I think might stay at five, are the Giants. We do know the Dolphins do have two picks in the first round. They do have one at 11, and then they got one at 30th overall from the Denver Broncos when they traded for Jaden Waddles. There's some interesting things. The Cowboys did get a pick. They have two picks in the first round. The Jets have three. They have number two overall. Number 16 overall. So they got they got a lot of picks with that. So the Jets have two. And you know, at least here in the first round, the Steelers are down there at 21. The Packers do not have one. They traded that to the to the Cowboys. And then even the Broncos don't even have one. They traded theirs to the Dolphins. And a lot of people are like, oh, you know, the Broncos shouldn't have traded, traded that 30th pick. The way I see it is if you're picking from 29 down, I would even say 30 down, that's like an early second round pick, because the last three picks aren't aren't really that big of a deal in the first round. But get back to the Broncos. They had a very good season, you know, with Sean Payton's third year in Denver, he was able to get them back into the playoffs. He was able to get them to be the number one seed in the AFC, all of the AFC, and they were also able to win the AFC West for the first time in 10 years, and finally dethroned the Kansas City Chiefs, which fell just because they did have an off-year. Off-year, like every team does, especially after you coming out coming off a Super Bowl blowout, like the Chiefs wound up having against the Philadelphia Eagles. And that's something that's something that that is difficult to bounce back from. You know, and when you you have a game a game like that where you do wind up getting beat and beat up really bad, and you don't have your third year, you do lose your starting quarterback with Patrick Mahomes to a knee injury, you know, 14 and 3. If you would have told anybody, any Bronco fan or anybody in the media, anybody that at the beginning of the season, we probably all would have told you you were crazy. Great season. Bo Nicks had a good season, unfortunately got hurt at the very last, one of the last plays in overtime in the divisional round, which probably shouldn't have counted. Obviously, we all know that there was a hole that was missed in the in the in the end zone, which effectively should have ended the game. Didn't really do a whole lot during the beginning portion, the first couple days, maybe the first three days of the new league year. They did re-sign some players, they had some teams put a cap on or put a tag on a player that the Broncos really wanted with the Jets. Obviously, they're not going to trade for who they wanted, but they did some really good things. One of the big things that came out of day four, the fourth day of the new league year and the free agent frenzy is when they were able to trade for Jaden Wallace from the Miami Dolphins, give up a first-round pick, a second-round pick, and basically swap fourths, which, again, a lot of people think that was way too much. And in my personal opinion, and what I've seen, I think that was a great, a great option. The Broncos did. They gave up a late first round pick. And again, like I said earlier, in my opinion, 30th overall in the first round. That's an early second round pick. That's not big of a deal. You know, I don't know if they really, they really thought, you know, they have their draft board, they know who they want. You know, you can always try to trade back in. Again, there are a lot of things going around that the Broncos will try to trade back up into the first round. They do have a good amount of draft capital, but I'm I'm I'm curious to see what happens. Again, the other big thing that came out is Sean Payton is giving up play calling doings to Jack Webb, who is now the offensive coordinator, who was the quarterback coach for the Broncos, and he is going to make the calls for next year for the Broncos, which it's an interesting thing. You know, Sean Payton has always liked to call his own plays, always liked to have been able to have complete control of the offense. And he's a good enough coach to be able to do that and have that ability. I think with that, you will see, you know, a little bit of a hybrid. You know, Sean Payton's gonna say, hey, let's go here, let's do this. You know, these are my options, these are my ideas, you know, kind of mix, mix up the play call. Maybe on a third down situation, Sean Payton will make the call and and and see, you know, how that is. The other big question is Jack Webb gonna is Webb gonna be on the field, or is he gonna be up in the box, being able to have a bigger, a better view from up top to make the play calls, to see what the defense is? And you know, is Bonox gonna have the ability to change a call if he he sees something on the line that he can pick? It's interesting again. We'll see what the Broncos do tonight in draft in day one of the draft. They may try to trade back up, they may try to trade back in, but I highly doubt you you will really see anybody from the Broncos trying to trade back in. You know, they do have the the draft capital to probably do it. My big thing is we obviously know the Jets, the Jets aren't gonna probably budge from two unless they get a really, really good deal. And from from one of these teams lower down, you know, is Dallas gonna pick up a defensive player? Are they gonna pick up a receiver? There are there is thinking that later round, starting at like six down, there is gonna be a very big run on offensive linemen, offensive tackles, offensive guards. But this draft class just isn't that strong in in any aspect. Maybe the running back, there's some depth in there that you could get you could get a good running back later in the draft. Tight ends, again, that's fairly stacked. You could be able to get a good tight end late in the draft, and that's kind of what the Broncos need, but maybe you can get one in the second round and and get him a little bit cheaper. We'll see what happens. The the the Eagles are still trying to trade AJ Brown. I I really don't see anybody other than maybe New England. Maybe the Bills really trying to get him. And again, you know, what it depends on what the Eagles are gonna ask for him, especially now that it is drafting, maybe they'll they'll lower their their you know, their pick of what they want for him. But again, do you want that drama? Do you want to have the issue with having AJ Brown and what he's done on the sidelines for the Eagles and what he's done for the Eagles and what he's how he's portrayed himself the last couple weeks ever since last year when they won the Super Bowl and was mad all this year? So it's it's gonna be it's gonna be very, very it's gonna be very crazy. Let's see how today it goes. You know, does do the Jets, do some Giants, does somebody go and get you know a quarterback later in the first round? And again, this is not a very good quarterback option in this year's draft. Next year's draft, totally different situation. The quarterback depth and and ability is is is much stronger. So, as we know, the NHL season has started its second half of the season. We are in the middle of the playoffs, beginning of the playoffs, and the Colorado Avalanche were able to get home ice all the way through the playoffs. They were able to win the president's trophy, which is something they they wanted to do at the beginning of the year. They also have they also are the best team in that in the Western Conference, and in my opinion, they are the team to beat in in the playoffs, especially in the Western Conference, Eastern Conference, if if they get to the Stanley Cup finals, then there, you know, there there's a few teams in there that I think can probably give them a run for their money. They have beaten the LA Kings twice. They beat them game one, two, two to one. They won game two in overtime, two to one. Uh, some crazy things happened in that game. If if you didn't hear that behind the King's bench, the glass broke by the fans pounding on it, which I've never seen or heard of before. You know, game one was a very interesting game. I think a lot of people and all and and myself included figured that the Aves would be able to run the Kings out of the building and really get them to be, you know, get the Kings to be out of their game. But the Kings have played their style of game. They've been able to push the Aves and stay on their toes and really get the Aves out of their style of game. You know, game two is that exact same way. You know, they had to come back from behind to be able to win it. And and so the Aves are up two games to none, which I think is great, but at this point, I I think the Aves are are still the team to beat in in the playoff. Can they win the cup? I I'm gonna say there's about a 75% chance I think they can win the cup. The big thing they need to be able to do is they need to be able to get this series with the Kings over in four, maybe in five. You don't really want it to go any more than that. You really don't want to start getting your players heard and and stretching out this first series. You want to end this first series and get it done with as soon as you can so that you can rest, get players healthy again, and be ready for that second round. Because in that second round, you're either gonna you're gonna be playing the winner of the Dallas Stars or the Minnesota Wild. Now, the Aves really want that game and that series to go seven games, six games, get those players beat up and and and really get those players tired where there isn't a lot of rest time between game where the the first round ends and the second round begins. You know, the Aves want to be able to have that little bit longer, you know, rest period. That's that's what they need to be able to have. That's what they want. They gotta get the series over with the Kings quick. Now, is tonight's game game three a must win for the Aves? Yes and no. Yes, they need to be able to take a good three to three to none lead in this series, really put you know the Kings in a hole, and maybe the Kings will start to, you know, do some dumb stuff and take some more penalties and give the Aves more power plays. And see if the Aves can can really start to push the Kings and the Aves really get the game going in the way they want. But again, let's see how that that happens. If they lose it, it's really getting again not that big of a deal. They can win it in game five. But, you know, I think in a in a way, yes, this is a is is a must-win for the Aves to go up 3-0. If they wind up losing, it's it's gonna be a it's really not gonna be that big of a deal. But they do need to at least try to get one game in LA and come home and end in the series in Denver if need be. But I would I would rather see it be done in four games, get a little bit more rest, and see who they do play, either the the stars or or Minnesota in the second round. And let's hope that series goes a long way. Now, David Addleman, the Denver Nuggets head coach first year, full season, had 50 wins. He and his dad are the first father-son duel in the NBA to have 50 wins each coaching. You know, the the last 12 games of the season, they had then the Nuggets were able to win. They went on a 12-game winning streak. They won up put putting themselves in the third seed. There was a lot of back and forth. Were they going to be the third seed, were they going to be the fourth seed, were the LA Lakers going to win the third seed? So when the last 12 games happened, the Nuggets had to win out to be able to win that the third seed. And if the Lakers lost one of their last 12 games, they would have won, they would have been able to not be the number three seed, they would have been the four. But again, the Nuggets had to win out, which they wound up doing. They wound up playing in in and getting the third seed, which is a lot of people were thinking, you know, a lot of these teams wanted to tank, you know, the the Nuggets were one of them. They figured, you know, playing the Minnesota Wild or playing the Minnesota Timberwolves, they're a very tough team. They're a very good team. They have given, you know, the Nuggets a lot of heartache, a lot of trouble in the playoffs. You know, they they have bounced the Nuggets out of the playoffs, you know, that first year after they won the NBA championship. And they've had some times, other times where the Nuggets have done really, really well game one, lost game two, and then that really set the tone for the rest of the series where the Nuggets wound up getting bounced in five games, and then the the Timberwolves wound up gentlemen did the gentleman sweep with the Nuggets. Again, that's the exact same script that has happened. The Nuggets won game one by ten, blew them out, played really, really well, were able to really outplay and do really, really good against the Timberwolves. Game two came around, they had a 20-point lead, they wound up losing if they wound up losing by five, and and the whole series have changed. Now Minnesota's calling out the the Nuggets for not being good defenders, and you know what? They're they're they're totally right. You know, they they really need to see how game three goes tonight. Yes, the Avs and Nuggets are both playing tonight in game three. Tonight is a very big game and absolutely a must-win for the Denver Nuggets. If you go down two games to one in Minnesota, you are going to put yourselves behind in a ball that you have been in before to where you can maybe steal one in Minnesota, come back to Denver for game five, two, two, and if you don't, and you lose both in Minnesota, and you're coming back to Denver for game five, down three games to one on the brink of being eliminated. Minnesota will find a way to do that and take you out in the first round. That's not what the Nuggets need to do. Now, does it really need a good team and being able to beat good teams? But then they've had these Spurts where they've lost and they've played like they have all season, had a huge lead, wound up blowing that lead, wound up losing the game in the end. Do I think they can still win the championship? Again, I'm gonna say a 25% chance because you now have to play the winner of the Timberwood or the Trailblazers and Spurs. Now, the Spurs, that series is tied 1-1, just like the Bull Nuggets. We know that one will be five. But the Nuggets need to be able to try to get this series over quickly in five games, win it and then take two in Minnesota, win one in Denver, get some rest, and see who you play. Could the Trailblazers beat and upset the San Antonio Spurs? Yes, because the Spurs really they're a young team, they're a good team, they have awesome players, they have an awesome coach, but they haven't really been pushed or really had the opportunity in the playoffs to really understand wow, this is a whole new you know, ball game. The season starts over, everybody's at 0-0, the playoffs are a lot tougher, just like in hockey. Hockey is probably one of the hardest playoffs that there is because there's so many games. You you there's gains of runs, there's things that happen. You get teams that are supposed to go really, really far in the playoffs, and they wound up getting beat in the first or second round because they just have an off-game or two and it really comes back to bite them. I'm gonna say a 25% chance that that the Nuggets can still win the NBA championship, but again, it all depends on this first series and who they play in the second, because we know they will not play the Rockets. Or not the Rockets. Yeah, I mean they could wind up playing the Rockets in in the Western Conference, it depends on who wins between the Rockets and the Rockets in LA. LA is up two games to none, and that's that one. But again, that might be there. The LA might get passes first round. Obviously, we know they're gonna get beat against you know Oklahoma City. We know that the Nuggets will play the Thunder, not until the Western Conference Finals, if that goes. We know they pushed into game seven and wound up losing last last year to go into the Western Conference Finals, which was very disappointing. So game three is a very big must-win for the for for the Denver Nuggets. They've gotta play better, they've gotta get better at defending, they've gotta be able to have a big lead, and they've got to be able to keep it. Well, as we all know, it is April, and the Rockies have started a couple big things. You know, they had a good spring training, you know, they started off a little bit rough, they wound up losing their first three games, and then winning a couple games, and and then really being able to come home and and really take out the Houston Astros and how about you know, very good, you know, home opener and win three games in a row and and really out hit, you know, and then they kind of you know fell back and you know did the same old Rockies kind of hacking where they struggled, where they got swept by, you know, the Dodgers obviously in LA and and and the Padres in San Diego, and then you know they were able to come home. Now the big thing that happened a few days ago is there is a new 40% owner. The Walmart Penner Group paid a good amount of money and they own 40% of the den the Colorado Rockies. Now, with that money that they put into the Rockies, they are able to clear the debt sheet of the Colorado Rockies. Now, the big thing is now that they have a little bit more money, and especially with a with an a 40% owner that has a ton of money and really wants to help bring the Rockies up into that top tier of the N MLB, you know, but it's gonna take years to be able to be there with the with the Dodgers, with the with the you know, the Boston Red Sox, with with the New York Yankees, but they they have that ability now that they have you know the Walmart Penner group in there to give something. You know, the the owner's son is now kind of running the day-to-day operations of of the team. They do have a new front office, you know, they do have some new, you know, they have new coaching staff, they have a new manager, they have a lot of new young players. But can these Rockies really go and be a team to contend in that in the in the National League West? Again, I'm gonna say no. They are starting from the ground up, they are trying and to do a big rebuild, and it's gonna take some time and many, many years, so I think to get this team up there. Now, speaking of some funny things that happened, especially in that Dodgers series, which was a four-game series here in Denver, they split the series two games two games apiece. Now, here's what happened. The catcher for the Dodgers is sitting there claiming that at one point the Rockies were cheating. Oh, oh, they're they're they're making really good first contact on on on on our pitcher, and and that just that's just fishy to me. They might have had to do a pitcher comb. No, here's the problem. You have new coaching staff on the Rockies LA Dodgers. They have a new manager, they have a new hitting coach, they have a new pitching coach, they have new coaches. They are getting these Rockies to play the game better. Hey, make first, go for the first ring, get good first ring contact. They have the highest first ring contract contact in the MLB. There's nothing wrong with that. The Dodgers are just mad and upset and quiet babies because they're not able to dominate the Rockies like they have the last couple years, and the Rockies have now figured out how to be able to push the Dodgers and really be a thorn in their side like they had should have been from the beginning. They're not cheating, Dodgers. This is why I can't stand any team from LA, because a lot of teams from LA like to dominate the the the every team from Denver. Obviously, we know the Lakers for years haven't been able to do that, but in years past, before, yes, the Lakers have dominated the Nuggets. You know, the Kings have always been a really big thorn in in the abs side. They've always pushed the ads when they've played them in in series at least a five or six-game series, even a seven here time time. So we'll see. But let's see how the Rockies do. We obviously know they are, you know, they they won last night, you know, they lost the first game against the Dodgers 1-0, and then they were able to put up eight runs and four runs in the in one inning and and in the second inning and and bat around. And that really does show that this Rockies team is much better. They are playing stronger, they are playing. Better. They are waiting. They're not waiting for their pitch. They're really going after the first pitch. They're really trying to establish the fact that they are going to be turning up the first pitch and make these pitchers completely change the way they play the Rockies. Man, it's going to be an exciting first round for the NFL draft. You know, we obviously know the Denver Broncos are our favorite team, and my favorite team don't have a pick in the first round, but can they pick up? I say yeah. You know, the Jets do have the 16th pick overall. They do have, you know, the you know, this this the second pick overall. So two huge picks in the first round. One high, one low. You know, the dolphins have an 11, they have 30, they have some room to really to really move the, you know. But, you know, we know the raider, we know the Raiders are gonna go after and get get the quarterback out of Illinois. We know that. We know Mendoza's gonna go number one. It's gonna be Terrius to see who the Jets pick. You know, are the Cardinals willing to trade down, you know, with somebody? Are the Titans willing to trade down with somebody? Are the Jets willing to trade down? You know, Cleveland, I think, might be one of those teams that's kind of set in at really wanting to stay at six. You know, could the commanders trade down, trade up to see what they have what they want to do? The big thing is I think you'll see the Cowboys really try to trade up to go get a receiver or go get a lineman. And I think they're gonna be that first team to really make the big splash to move up to I say three, maybe four, maybe five. I don't think you'll see them trade with the Giants, but they are gonna want to try to jump ahead of the Giants and get who they want, you know, because again, a lot of these teams have the same players on their draft board. You know, we we know that typically the New England Patriots have a very short and very small first round draft board. Let's say most teams, all the other 31 teams maybe have 100 players or 100 and 200 players on their draft board, you know, and they might have you know 25, 30 in the in the first round who they want. You know, the New England Patriots for years have always been known having a very short, very small, maybe 75, maybe 80 player, maybe 90 player draft board, and five or six, maybe ten players in the first round that they really want. You know, in the second round, late rounds, that's when they really start to push, and that's where they really start to try to try to trade up. It's interesting to see the Chiefs way up at nine, you know, years for years, for years. They were 31, 32, they were they were down at the bottom because they had always won the Super Bowls and they have been very dominating. To go from 31 last year to nine. That's a huge tilt. That really shows that losing your best offensive player really can tilt your season to the bad or to the good. So let's see how night one goes. I will do another quick recap of night one tomorrow morning. I hope you all enjoyed T Bone Sports One Fan All Game Episode 1.
