Good morning and welcome to episode 5 Tebow and Sports One Fan All Game. So I'm gonna play a quick little excerpt from the Score app and an article written by Mark Long about the controversy that's happening right now with a player in Texas Tech being ruled eligible to play after the NCA ruled him ineligible for gambling on games from when in 2022 when he was in UNL at U University of Illinois and now he plays for Texas Tech. I'm gonna play a quick little excerpt of of this and then we'll get into discussion of how just unbelievably ridiculous this is, and this is how changing college football this might be if he is allowed to play, and and we'll get into that.
SPEAKER_03Big 12 athletic directors took part in a conference call Tuesday with Commissioner Brett Yormark to address the situation around Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby and the court ruling that restored his NCAA eligibility for the upcoming season. The temporary injunction issued Monday by a Texas district court prevents the NCAA from enforcing its ban of Sorsby, the transfer QV had been ruled ineligible for what will be his final college season, after he acknowledged years of gambling that included at least 40 bets on his own team while a freshman at Indiana. Since NCAA rules call for a permanent loss of eligibility for any player who wagered on his own team, the judge's decision sent shockwaves through college sports, including in Texas Technician's own league. In a statement without getting into specifics, the commissioner said many of the ads voiced their opinions. We will continue to have open and honest dialogue amongst the group, and until there is something to report, these conversations will remain within the conference, he said. Next will be a meeting of the league's executive board, when there is expected to be a discussion to present options, but no immediate action is expected then. The full board of directors, made up of presidents and chancellors from the league's 16 members, is expected to meet next week. Part of the injunction from the 99th District Court against the NCAA includes a two-game suspension for Sorsby. He would miss games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State, but eligible to return when the Red Raiders play their Big 12 opener at home September 18 against Houston. The NCAA is appealing to a higher Texas court. Sorsby made thousands of impermissible bets on college and pro sports that were worth at least $90,000 while at Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech. Those bets include the ones he made while a freshman with the Hoosiers in 2022, though none were on games in which he played that season. I think that's the unpardonable sin. Florida Athletic Director Scott Strickland said Tuesday. And I think everyone in America grew up knowing that was the unpardonable sin when it comes to sports and gambling.
SPEAKER_01Okay. 40 bets. Where?
SPEAKER_02And and and we banned a baseball player for life, Pete Rose, for gambling on his own team. Now, years ago he had finally admitted that he did it before he he passed away. And now hopefully Major League Baseball allow him. They reinstated him and lifted a lifetime ban, you know, A after he he admitted and B after he passed away. But we're gonna allow this young kid to make money on gambling on college sports when he's in college. Okay, yeah, he didn't bet on his team when he was playing in Indiana in 2022, but still where is this remotely fair? There are there are now teams outside of the Big 12, and this was started by the athletic director in in Nebraska. He doesn't want to play Texas Tech in any sport, not just football. We're we're talking about any sport Texas Tech's plays, that they could play a potential team outside their conference. This kid's gonna get suspended for he can't play the first two games of two sister schools because, oh well, you know, no. No. This kid needs to be permanently banned from college football, never allowed to play college football again, and and pay for college himself and and realize that you you broke the rules, you you did something completely disrespectful and and tarnished not just your schools that you've played for, but you know, Texas Tech.
SPEAKER_01$90 million? $90,000?
SPEAKER_0290,000? Okay, there are there are people in this country that are struggling to pay for food. Yet this kid's making $90,000 on on betting in in college football. No. Everybody else in in the Big 12 needs to sit there and be like, no, we're we're not gonna play you. Or or in any sport until you until we get this straightened out and NCA is allowed to ban this kid.
SPEAKER_01This is something that, you know, again, obviously in Texas, that's whatever, you know, no, no, I don't really want to get into the political PS that that this is this is doing.
SPEAKER_02But, you know, Mark Long, you know, this is a great, great article by him, and and and you know, all respect to him, but this is just unbelievable. You know, you you you need to you need to ban this kid. This kid can't play, you know. Sornesby is is, you know, this is not this is not what it is. It's not fair for this kid to be allowed to play college football. He needs to be banned.
SPEAKER_01He needs to be, you know, ineligible. And you that's this is just this is ridiculous.
SPEAKER_02This is not how, you know, okay, I get it. I I get sports betting now in this country is is, you know, billion-dollar business. I get it makes money. I don't do it, I don't understand how it works. But yeah, you he he could have easily had had you know way the the the refs, you know, influence these games. You you you hear people saying the NBA is rigged, the NFL is rigged, the NHL is rigged, you know, MLB, you know, now, you know, they're you know, they they have you know their own system now of of challenging plays, and but this is college football. This is kids learning to become adults and understand how the world works, and yet this kid is able to is able to bet on football since 2022. We're now in 2027, 2026. And and and by the time the season's over, we'll we'll be in 2027, we'll be there, you know. No, this kid doesn't this kid doesn't deserve to play college football. He he deserves to be, you know, paying back all this money and and and not playing college football. You know, the the Big 12 needs to get this figured out. NCA needs to figure this out and and make an example of this young man and say, hey, you're gonna bet on college sports, especially the teams you play for for years, and you're gonna make $90,000. No, you know what? You you're you're you you you're not gonna play. You you're you're gonna sit at home and and and but I just hope this gets figured out. This is something that that needs to be done. And let's let's see what happens. Let's just hope that you know the NCAA's able to run their college sports and how things are done in college and and make sure that that kids that break the rules or do something egregious like this aren't allowed to play and and show these younger kids, hey, you know, you break the rules, you do something wrong, you know, there there are going to be consequences. So let's just hope that this issue gets this issue gets absolved resolved and and done, and and I will follow up on it, and then I will do another podcast later once we figure out what's going on. So today is the start of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The United States does play today. Well, it's gonna be an interesting tournament, um, especially with there's so much backlash with the ticket controversy, you know, these the stadiums not allowing to have their their sponsorships, and you know, because that's beef or rules, you know, these stadiums having this go to real grass, and it it's gonna be it's gonna be fun, you know, and I'm glad, you know, they this is something that that is is always fun.
SPEAKER_01And it's again one of those things that shouldn't be politicalized to where you know what things are going on.
SPEAKER_02And again, I don't really want to get into politics on this because this is not what this podcast is about. It's about sports, but just real briefly on that, we have an idiot in in the White House in our country, leading our country that everything has to be about him, and and that's not that's not what this sport is about. Soccer is is a great sport. It's something that is finally in this country starting to become popular. You know, Europe has been popular for for many, many years, but it's it's gonna be a fun tournament. I I do see maybe the United States team getting into the tournament of 16. I don't see them really going past that point. I I I really don't even I don't really have I'm gonna say let's do, you know, let's let's see here. I I think you can see maybe some of these European teams really going, really getting into it. I I think you'll see, you know, you'll you'll see this, you know, today's games are Mexico, South Africa, Korea Republic, and Chechnya, which, you know, there's gonna be some fun games tomorrow is Canada, Banzana, and the United States and Paraguay at seven. So, you know, it's there's gonna be some there's gonna be some, I just I see I see Mexico probably winning group group A. I see Canada probably winning group B. I see either Brazil or Scotland or Monaco winning group group C. Uh maybe Paraguay, maybe the United States winning group, group D, Group A, E, you know, again, Ecuador or Germany, I think will come out of that one. You know, group F, probably either Switzerland, Netherland, I maybe, maybe Japan being in there. By far and away, I see either Belgium or or Egypt um being in there. I w Iran is in there. That that's gonna be an interesting um group to see how how they are protected and how they are kept. Uh I see probably Spain running away with with group H. Obviously, I see France running away with with group H, group J. Again, Argentina, probably gonna pretty much run away with that one. Either Portugal or Colombia, probably there in Group K. Group L, I again, obviously England, I think, I think will be running away with with that group. So we have some games today, and it'll it'll be fun. Um, you know, we'll we'll see how it starts out. And obviously we know this will go well into July. So we'll see how this we'll see how this goes. It it should be a it should be a fun tournament. Um it's good to see the United States men's national team back in the World Cup after many, many years of not a few years, a few times not being in it. Do I see them being as dominant as as the women have been, other than the last World Cup four years ago for for the women where the women got knocked out before the championship game? No, but we'll we'll we'll see. We'll see if if if men's soccer can can finally get get back to to being where they should be, or at least where they are. Uh college football, you know, again, we'll get we'll we'll or NFL, you know, second round of OTAs for most teams. You know, Denver's there. Obviously, we know Bo Nicks isn't participating. He he should be ready to go for mandatory minute camp and then you know take July and finish getting ready for July. And then by the by the time the end of July comes, when when training camp finally gets official at the end of July, should be at 100% is is there. There is a, you know, we'll we'll see how how it goes. You know, this is a tough injury to come back from, especially the ankle, because it's something that, you know, he needs to be able to have the ability to get out of a situation, to be able to run, to be able to scramble, to be able to make, you know, plant on that foot and and and make good good accurate throws. We'll we'll see, you know, how the Broncos do. I again, like I said last time in the other, in the other podcast four, where I think they can, I don't see them doing 13 and or 14 and 3 again. I see 13 and 4, 12 and 5 somewhere in there. I do see them still, still obviously winning the AFC West, uh, maybe even being number two or number one uh seed once we get into the into the and you know in the AFC. I still think they are the team to beat in the AFC. Buffalo is gonna be right there, Baltimore is gonna be right there. You'll you'll you'll see some teams, I think, that that are gonna surprise you. I I think I I will be surprised to see how Patrick Mahomes goes and and if he's actually gonna be ready to go and and play week one. Again, that's an that's another injury you're coming off of, especially a full knee repair, where you need to be able to have that knee where you can't tweak it, where you don't get hurt. You know, is he gonna be ready to go week one when they play Monday night against the Denver Broncos? Or are they gonna be smart and keep him out and and let him recover and be fully ready to go, maybe week five, week six, somewhere later in the season, you know, week ten even, you know, about halfway, maybe about halfway through the season, obviously, maybe both times after they play the Broncos. Because if if you re-hear, if you re-injure this knee, it's just you know, it it puts him back. Yeah, it was unbelievable that he had surgery the next day. Like after he gets hurt the very next day, he goes under the knife and gets it repaired. But that's, you know, he wanted that. That's what the the Chiefs wanted. So, yeah, we'll see. Uh, you know, quick little update on the Rocky, you know, and the Rockies are are doing better than than they were than they were last year. Obviously, they they are still struggling. Obviously, they beat the Cubs uh two games in a row now, and and and that's an another thing that how crazy the Cubs were early on in the season. Um you you you had the the the Cubs probably one of the best you know, one of the best teams in baseball. They had two big 10 game win streaks going on, you know, and now and now they're they're you know they're 34 and 34, they're at 500. You know, yeah, the Rockies are at 26 and and and 42, probably still one of the worst teams in baseball, but compared to last year around this time when they still had single digits and and yeah, they're still at, you know, 40, 40 losses. So they're but you know, when when they now have a true front office, a true president of operations doing his thing, a true, you know, manager and and you're, you know, a person to being able to be to run this team the way they are. Yeah, they now have some extra money from, you know, the Walter Penner group. Yeah, they have, you know, they're they're they're that sheet is cleared. But when you can actually have a general manager now and a president of operation and they're pretty much allowed to do what they want, where Monfred isn't gonna step in, his son is is sort of, I guess, running the team, i it's good to see them starting to make progress in the right direction. But the sad thing is they are so far behind. It's gonna be years before they even maybe make the playoffs. They might make the wild card. I I again, I mean no disrespect when I say this, but absolutely no chance that the Rockies ever win the NL West. They are that far behind the Dodgers, the the the Padres, you know, Arizona's, you know, still there at the bottom along with the Rockies, but you know, I I I will take 26 and 42. You know, they they've been playing great baseball. They're they're a good, they're they're going in the right direction. We'll we'll we'll say that. You know, go go back to some Broncos, you know, OTAs, you know. I think a lot of people, um, when they first had their OTAs and they were able to get their first good look at Waddle and realize how short he was. Yeah, he's he's a short receiver, but he's fast. He he can he can really take, I'm gonna say he'll probably be receiver one or they'll they'll he'll be receiver one A and and Cortland Sutton will be receiver one one B or one A.
SPEAKER_01But you look at this, you look at this wide receiver room that is just absolutely stacked. I mean, just stacked.
SPEAKER_02You you have now you now have you know just so many things going on with this with this team, and you can you can have it where I I'm very curious who you know who's gonna be the odd man out in in in in this room. Even even the running back room is is stacked. You know, Sam Ellinger is is really doing well in OTAs and and really giving, you know, you know, uh Jordan Jordan Jordan Stinnem, Jared Stinnem a run for his money that said to be the backup, you know, you you could see that happen. But when you have just and Coleman is doing great in OTAs, he he's being compared to being a JK Dobbins type of running back, the power, the ability to make moves, yeah, he's not the best out of the backfield, but he's got that burst of speed. You know, RJ Harvey, you know, he'll still make this team. You know, when you have a three-headed monster with J.K. Dobbins, Josh Coleman, Joel Coleman, and and J.K. Dobbins. Now you have three power running backs, big running backs, you know, McLaughlin or McCallan. Yeah, McGilliam McLaughlin has put on weight, but you know, he he might be the odd man out in in this room, you know, where where you where you do have it. You you have you know the the wide receiver is just absolutely that's gonna be a room and that I think is is gonna be the one to watch, especially during training camp, especially during, you know, the the preseason to see who who is who is the odd man out. Yeah, the tight end room isn't as big, but I think I think you'll you'll see, you know, you'll see some you'll see these guys really come together and and and that should be that should be a good thing. But is Pat Bryant gonna be the odd man out? Is Troy Franklin gonna be the odd man out? Is little Jordan Humphrey gonna be the odd man out? You know, is is Marvin Mims gonna be the odd man out? I don't think so. I think Hale obviously make the team because he he is the gonna be the the special teams guru there. You know, Cortland Sutton, Jalen Waddell, you you just see these guys in this stacked room, and you know, who's gonna make who's gonna make the team, who's gonna be the odd man out is gonna be a fantastic mini-camp. I think training camp is gonna be fantastic. Obviously, this year we also did learn that there isn't gonna be any joint practices between the three teams the Broncos do play in preseason, which is, you know, obviously Atlanta Falcons, the Green Bay Packers, or Minnesota Vikings, which is a little odd, but okay, I get it. But we'll we'll we'll see. It's gonna be an interesting season, and we'll we'll see how the Broncos do. We'll see how you know football starts here in a few months, and we're starting to get into that, you know, mode of football starting to come back into full swing. You know, obviously we know the NBA finals are on the downswing. The Knicks won last night, so they're up three games to one. You know, in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, the Carolina Hurricanes, and Las Vegas Knights are tied 2-2, so that's going to be a good series. That's obviously going six. The NBA finals might go five, might go six. We'll we'll see how that goes. But it's getting real exciting that to see some uh college football starting to get back up into full swing. College, you know, the NFL getting back up in there, and it'll it'll be a fun, fun time. Thank you for relating to T Bone Sports One Fan All Game Episode 5.
