On this week's episode, Bella and Harrison discuss the upcoming Academy Awards and give our predictions for who we think is going to win.

SPEAKER_07

Shall we?

SPEAKER_04

Shall we?

SPEAKER_07

Shall we? Cheers!

SPEAKER_04

Welcome to the Shot On Film Podcast.

SPEAKER_07

I love tequila.

SPEAKER_04

It's so good.

SPEAKER_07

It's so good.

SPEAKER_04

Such a good time. So good. So good. I'm Bella.

SPEAKER_07

And I'm Harrison. And uh this week is our Oscar predictions episode.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_07

It's gonna be fun. When this airs, it'll be about two days before the Oscars. Um so we're gonna be giving our already coming off. Um I just was gonna say this is about to be a longer one for sure. Um because of the nature of what we're talking about. We're gonna go through every category. I'm going to say every nominee, and we are going to give our reactions or our predictions on who we think is gonna win. Um I personally, I will just say this off the bat. I am doing what I think is going to win, not what I want to win. And I will probably mention if there's a difference between the two, because that happens frequently where what I want to win is not what I think is going to win.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Um I'm really scared.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, we'll see. There's some of them. Yeah, we'll see.

SPEAKER_07

There's a few.

SPEAKER_04

God, do we have more alcohol?

SPEAKER_07

We do, if you would like. Um, you know, there's always room for more. Um what I was gonna ask is what are we going to do for who gets more right? Are we gonna do something for that? Who's the winner? Like, is there gonna be a penalty for the loser? Is there gonna be you know? What do we want to do for this prediction? Because I feel like it'd be fun to make an annual thing out of the Oscars of our prediction episode, and then the reaction episode we could do something fun during of whoever loses. And it is a shot on film podcast, so my brain immediately goes towards taking another extra shot of something fun. But we can talk about that off air if you want, but I just wanted to.

SPEAKER_04

Here's my thing is that it is taking another shot on brand, sure. But a little boring.

SPEAKER_07

I would agree. The penalty feels like it should be more severe given the stakes and how difficult it's going to be. I would assume we're gonna be relatively close because a lot of them are gonna be very clear favorites that are most likely gonna win. And then there's gonna be the ones that are like tight that we're gonna go 50-50 on.

SPEAKER_04

All right, you can you can fight me on this. It's just my first thought.

SPEAKER_07

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

I think classic pie in the face.

SPEAKER_07

Pie in the face?

SPEAKER_04

Pie in the face.

SPEAKER_07

On camera, pie in the face.

SPEAKER_04

Yep. That's how we end the upstream.

SPEAKER_07

I'm gonna have to like put some.

SPEAKER_04

I don't give a fuck what you have to do.

SPEAKER_07

This is my work office. I don't really want to have the carpet be destroyed.

SPEAKER_04

It'll be fine.

SPEAKER_07

I'll have to put something down.

SPEAKER_04

Like a little whipped cream.

SPEAKER_07

I do feel really confident about me beating you on this year's uh given the fact that I have done extensive research and you're winging it a little bit more than I am.

SPEAKER_04

I was going through it.

SPEAKER_07

I've even checked multiple odd books.

SPEAKER_04

Did I have time to do research this year? Do I no? Do I usually do research?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Depends.

SPEAKER_04

I'm not the academy.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

No, you're not. But I will say when I found out that the Academy, whose fucking job it is to vote on these movies, does not watch every single movie before voting.

SPEAKER_07

That's a problem. See, and on that note, we have we have about five categories of movies or of awards that we haven't seen any of the nominees for. So I didn't feel like it was right for us to really.

SPEAKER_04

Sorry, that's moving. My left hand, my mouth.

SPEAKER_07

Sorry, everyone. Um, it's tripping. Sorry if you trim me. Um I didn't think it was appropriate for us to like actually give a prediction for that, considering we hadn't seen any of them.

SPEAKER_04

So what we decided to do was I like I you you judge a book by its covering.

SPEAKER_07

We're going to literally just read the title. Say whichever title sounds the best, and we're just gonna stick with it. And I've already done that because I read all the nominees, so like there's some interesting titles. Like, we'll get there. Actually, why don't we just get there?

SPEAKER_04

I was doing something else before this, okay? And so, did I have the time? No. Do I care? Absolutely. Let's go.

SPEAKER_07

All right. So let's start with international feature. All right, and this is gonna be a guess from us. Yeah, I'm sorry. I should bring napkins next time.

SPEAKER_04

I think I have hands on it.

SPEAKER_07

All right, so this is gonna be a guess from us because neither of us have seen any of these.

SPEAKER_02

That's okay.

SPEAKER_07

All right, so we have from Brazil, the secret agent.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

From France, it was just an accident. From Norway, sentimental value. From Spain, Sirat, I believe is how that's pronounced. And from Tunisia, the voice of Hind Rajab. I'm hoping I pronounced that correctly. So, would you like to uh give your well you can see which one I bolded. My guess is Norway is going to win with the sentimental value.

SPEAKER_04

I think here's the thing. I think sentimental value is going to win because I saw it nominated for other awards.

SPEAKER_07

I picked it because it's the only one I'd actually heard the name of.

SPEAKER_04

But the voice of Hind. God, I so horribly want that to win. From the deepest part of my soul, I need that to win. Why is that?

SPEAKER_07

You're a big fan of Tunisian cinema?

SPEAKER_04

I am a big fan of Palestine. Um that sounded weird in like a sports team way, and I didn't mean it to sound like that. I just like her story of being like locked and shot in a car at six years old is is utterly heartbreaking. And they used her true voice, they used her call logs.

SPEAKER_07

So you know more about this than I do in the movie.

SPEAKER_04

It's like I'll cry right now, I swear to God.

SPEAKER_07

I just Well, now you got me wanting to watch all of them, but that one.

SPEAKER_04

It's so we should just the trip. I saw the trailer for it, and it was I I I started crying, and I like even like like in time when that was happening, my heart was fucking broken for her.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Of all of the people in Palestine, my heart is is there's it's so far past disappointment and grief and and any other emotion that I know how to articulate.

SPEAKER_06

I can't verbalize.

SPEAKER_04

I don't have a word in my own vocabulary. I'm sure that there's a word somewhere in a different language.

SPEAKER_07

Orange is the only one that really comes to mind. It's worse.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it's so much worse. No, I know. It's I I I I I have no words, but it is it's a beautiful, heartbreaking story, and it deserves more than flowers. It deserves a garden. All right. So it's something I would want to win. I do I know that it's gonna win. No, just because I know that sentimental value is nominated for us.

SPEAKER_07

If I remember correctly, I want to say that Voice of Injab was like the the second favorite on the odds, and it was really close between the two of them. I can't remember for sure. Um, but it was close. Um, I guess then another guest one. We're gonna just get all our first five guest categories out of the way first. Documentary short.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

All right. All the empty rooms. Uh armed only with a camera, the life and death of Brent Renaud. Hope I said that right. Uh, Children No More, We and Are Gone. Um, The Devil is Busy. And Perfectly a Strangeness. Some interesting titles.

SPEAKER_04

No, yeah, but they all sound really dark and good.

SPEAKER_07

Documentary shorts. I'm not a huge Doc fan. I don't usually sit down and watch Doc movies. I tend to watch Doc shows more often, personally. And this is all about movies this week. We're not even talking TV really this week at all. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We should do a similar thing for the Emmys, by the way, because we're a movie and TV podcast.

SPEAKER_04

When we get there, okay? When we get there.

SPEAKER_07

Put a pin in that one. But like we should talk to me about that later. Yeah, yeah. Um we'll skip the Grammys and Tony's. It's tough. Because you're going off of titles. Yeah. I have literally, I have no idea. I'm still thinking about all I do.

SPEAKER_04

I'll be so real. I'm still just thinking about Hindu. Wow. Fucking shake. Yeah. Shook to my core.

SPEAKER_07

Alright. What's your pick?

SPEAKER_04

I I think I'm gonna go with Children No More.

SPEAKER_07

Children No More for Bella.

SPEAKER_04

It's it was it was between that armed only with a camera, because that sounds really good.

SPEAKER_07

That title was my favorite title. Really good to be honest.

SPEAKER_04

Um also like The Devil is Busy interests. That sounds interesting. Yeah. But I think I'm gonna go with Children No More.

SPEAKER_07

And I went with all the empty rooms because that also sounded kind of intriguing. And I was like, what is that about?

SPEAKER_02

Background. I don't know. Who knows? But background. So those are our guests.

SPEAKER_07

We have no idea. Like, I know nothing about Eddie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Uh, which remains the same about our next category documentary feature, full length. So we we have the Alabama solution.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Come see me in the good light, cutting through rocks, Mr. Nobody Against Putin, and The Perfect Neighbor. Now I went with Mr. Nobody Against Putin right off the bat. Because that title. That title worked for me. So that was my guess. Again, I know nothing about any of these movies. Haven't heard a thing about them. Like no, I know nothing.

SPEAKER_04

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_07

And I feel bad. And I think we need to do better next year. This is a movie podcast.

SPEAKER_04

We do need to do better next year.

SPEAKER_07

We need to have seen more of the nominees next year.

SPEAKER_04

We and that's an oath that I'm willing to take.

SPEAKER_07

I haven't even seen all the best picture nominees, and I will say that right now, and that's a problem.

SPEAKER_04

That is a problem.

SPEAKER_07

Am I confident that I picked one of the winners? Yes. I am because it's kind of a two-horse race.

SPEAKER_04

At least I will also say like I had friends that saw um most of all of them. Pretty much most of, if not all, that are nominated. And I think that I'll be able to watch more of what is nominated. I definitely think if it's closer to the Oscars, we just needed to film this. I know.

SPEAKER_07

Now I think there's there will be movies that win Oscars that I haven't seen that because they win Oscars all end up being like, I gotta go see that now.

SPEAKER_04

Or like when everything all at once won and they put it back in theaters for years. Yeah, two weeks.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, I wish I would have gone and seen that in theaters. I saw that. Oh never saw that in theaters.

SPEAKER_04

It was so good. I've watched I must be so many times. I've seen it so many times. I got a tattoo for it. I know. It's great. The googly eyes.

SPEAKER_07

Zoom in camera too.

SPEAKER_04

Uh um, I'm gonna see Come See Me in the Good Light.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. All right. Next we have, I believe it's live action short. Yep. Okay. Live action short. These are some interesting ones too. Um Butcher's Stain. I honestly I was this close to trying to finding these five because I was like, oh, shorts. I could watch all five of these today.

SPEAKER_04

Did you find them?

SPEAKER_07

I didn't even look. It was just a thought I had a lunch and then I got busy again. Sorry. All right, Butcher's Stain, A Friend of Dorothy, Jane Austen's period drama, The Singers, and Two People Exchanging Saliva.

SPEAKER_04

I don't like any of these titles. I don't like any of them. I'm so sorry. I don't I just don't like any of the titles. Do I know what they are? No, but I just don't like the titles personally.

SPEAKER_07

Two people exchanging saliva. Griffs.

SPEAKER_04

Um, I'm gonna go with Dorothy.

SPEAKER_07

The friend of Dorothy. Yeah, it's giving Wizard of Oz. What did you pick for Dark Feature again? I'm giving you a good one. Okay. I was just okay. Okay, again, no idea. I don't know anything. Yeah, good stuff. I know y'all are loving this so far. We have opinions. This is the last guess. This next one is the last guess. All right. Animated short. This is the last one that none of us have seen any of.

SPEAKER_04

Next year I'll be better with time management, I promise.

SPEAKER_07

Yes.

SPEAKER_04

It's just that we started this podcast and then we're like, the Oscars are coming up immediately.

SPEAKER_07

We did. We were like, let's start a movie podcast. The Oscars are in two weeks. Okay. We're gonna be better. Especially if y'all watch this. If there are people that care about our opinions, it'll be even more incentivizing for us to actually do this. Um animated short. All right, so we have Butterfly, Forever Green, The Girl Who Cried Pearls, Retirement Plan, and the Three Sisters.

SPEAKER_04

Like Uncle Vanya and the Three Sisters?

SPEAKER_07

Nope.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Constantin Is it Russian? Constant Constantine Bronze. I'm so sorry if I butchered that name. That's who's credited with that one.

SPEAKER_04

But is it Russian?

SPEAKER_07

That kind of sounds Russian, Constantine.

SPEAKER_04

That sounds like Uncle Vanya to me.

SPEAKER_07

I don't know enough about it.

SPEAKER_04

It's a theater blank.

SPEAKER_07

Fair enough. Alright. I went uh with the girl who cried pearls for no rhyme or reason other than it sounded like it could be winning. I don't even know.

SPEAKER_04

I'm between the three sisters and butterfly, but I'm gonna go with three sisters for Uncle Vanya's possibility.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. Okay. Three sisters it is. All right. So now we have uh a category which I've actually seen some of these nominees in the two. Let's go! Yes, casting!

SPEAKER_03

Woo!

SPEAKER_07

The category casting, which I believe is a new category this year, is it not? All right, you don't know.

SPEAKER_04

Is casting award four categories that ever I've ever been like, I want to win that. This is important to me.

SPEAKER_07

And there's they've added fasting casting.

SPEAKER_04

They've added categories too.

SPEAKER_07

They have. Didn't they add a stunt category?

SPEAKER_04

They did, and that's why Tom Cruise is like, I gotta get my shit in.

SPEAKER_07

This is the first year they've done casting, which I think is great. And stunts is great too. It's not on the award this year, but they've added it for future. I don't know how. We're a movie podcast that doesn't know enough about it. Go on, go on, we're moving on. So we have the nominees the nominees for casting. We have Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent, and Sinners.

SPEAKER_04

For cast?

SPEAKER_07

Like for cast.

SPEAKER_04

As in, like, is it like the best ensemble, is what they are saying?

SPEAKER_07

I think it's the award for the casting director and their job casting this film.

SPEAKER_04

Ah. Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Would you like to go first or should I?

SPEAKER_04

You go first while I think a bit.

SPEAKER_07

Alright. Because I have a feeling we're gonna line up on this one. Um, my choice was Sinners. Uh, that cast is phenomenal. And it was close. Because to be honest with you, Marty Supreme's cast is phenomenal. I almost picked Marty Supreme, and one battle after another's cast is phenomenal.

SPEAKER_04

Did you watch Marty Supreme?

SPEAKER_07

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

I also saw Hamnet. Hamnet's cast was good too.

SPEAKER_04

I have not seen Hamnet, but I've been wanting to watch Hamnet for so fucking long.

SPEAKER_07

You should watch it.

SPEAKER_04

I heard I've heard nothing but good things.

SPEAKER_07

I have good things to say about it. So yeah. There are there's good stuff in there. Um but yeah, Sinners, I mean, obviously Michael B. Jordan literally plays two people, so that's phenomenal casting. But I mean, every one of the ensemble in there does such a good job.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I think that it I think I'll give it to Sinners too for the thought of like some of these people haven't worked in so long, and for someone to remember how amazing and talented they are to bring them up. That's phenomenal.

SPEAKER_07

No, they Sinners cast.

SPEAKER_04

You deserve that.

SPEAKER_07

One battle, One Battle and Marty Supreme's casts are also fantastic, and there are some standout awards in acting specifically for those movies that I might be picking over Sinners. Um, but we'll get there. Uh there that it that one was tough. That one was genuinely tough. All right, cinematography is next, and I have strong feelings on this one. Okay. And I've said this from the time that I saw this movie that this should win best cinematography. Frankenstein.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Marty Supreme, One Battle, Sinners and Train Dreams. Sinners needs to win Best Cinematography. Sinners is phenomenal. First of all, just shout out I don't want to butcher your name, so I'm gonna read it. Um Autumn Durald Arkapa. Arkapa? I butchered it.

SPEAKER_04

I'll give it to you.

SPEAKER_07

Hell yeah. First women's cinematography.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Cinematography uh nominee.

SPEAKER_04

Would be making history.

SPEAKER_07

Would be making history. Already is making history by just being nominated.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, but also would be making history in a movie that deserves it.

SPEAKER_07

Correct. Not only is it just like, okay, great, let's give an award to female cinematographer because females work their ass off two and women are in the all the time. Love it. Happy Women's History and International Women's Day was Sunday. Um however, it's literally deserving. They shot it on Panavision Super 70, they shot it on IMAX. It's phenomenally shot. It's so good. It's so beautiful. It's the 17th feature of all time to ever use iMac 70mm film. They literally like they consulted with Nolan and all you know how I feel about Nolan. Like it is so good. They used all kinds of like old school lighting with new school stuff. They use, I mean, I could just go on. It's so pretty.

SPEAKER_04

Innovation.

SPEAKER_07

It's so cool. It was like they do some awesome camera effects that are like fun. Yeah. Like actually, I was talking to my buddy Sam. Uh, and we were talking about like the scene when um is it smoke? I don't remember which one it is. When he goes to visit his girl for the first time uh in a long time, hasn't seen her. Smoke. Smoke. Um, and they're like, you know, she's like, oh, your body still remembers me.

SPEAKER_05

That's the sexiest fucking thing I've ever heard of my damn life. So right before it's in Is Haley Steinfeld sexy. I'm so sorry. Is Haley Steinfeld supposed to be sexy in this movie? Of course, then lust. And so does Miss Pauline, but God fucking damn it. Give it, give me my girl Annie and those motherfucking cars. I never gonna forget you, bitch.

SPEAKER_07

They do some fun things with the focus and like the edges of the frame in certain parts, including that one where they like kind of like I don't know if they're using like a filter and camera or something like that, but it's super cool.

SPEAKER_01

It's so good.

SPEAKER_07

That movie's great.

SPEAKER_01

It's so good.

SPEAKER_07

I just rewatched it a few weeks ago. It's so good.

SPEAKER_04

I think if I watch it again, I'm gonna cry.

SPEAKER_07

Why not do it? You know that scene with the with the vampire when he first shows up at the house and they're like chasing him, and then they're he like Remick? Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And when the Native Association?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_07

That scene was supposed to be the opening of the movie.

SPEAKER_04

Oh.

SPEAKER_07

It was written as the opening of the movie, and then they ended up changing it in post.

SPEAKER_04

Interesting. It was supposed to open with that scene. Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Which I kind of get from a writing standpoint of opening with it.

SPEAKER_04

When you when I see it, of if it's this guy starting.

SPEAKER_07

Like that was the opening shot of him like falling and like he's got the smoky feet and all that. I see it all. I see it. Like probably a much longer fade in to like the house on the then he steps in. That could totally have been the opening. I totally get why. But I also love the opening and what they did with it, too.

SPEAKER_04

So, like I'm okay with it being in the middle, and I think I I I wouldn't have argued if it was how it started. Sorry, I've been moving around.

SPEAKER_07

Alright, costume design. Costume design. We have nominees Avatar Fire and Ash. Have you seen that by the way? Nope. Alright. Frankenstein.

SPEAKER_04

I heard it wasn't good.

SPEAKER_07

I saw it once. Don't don't waste your time. Um did you see the second one?

SPEAKER_04

I saw, yeah, I saw Way of Water.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, same movie. Uh there's fire people now. That's about it. Um sorry, James Cameron. Okay, to be fair to James Cameron, Fire and Ash is literally just the third act of that film.

SPEAKER_04

I've heard not that it's a bad movie. I heard that it's just a continuation of Way of Water when it made it sound like it's its own standing movie.

SPEAKER_07

Literally just way of the the second and third movie is just a six-hour movie.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Because the studio split it up, or he split it up because what's another extra two billion dollars, I guess.

SPEAKER_04

Jesus. Okay, moving on.

SPEAKER_07

He literally said the studio apparently didn't want him to have a six-hour movie?

SPEAKER_04

No one wants to have a six-hour movie. Two?

SPEAKER_07

Because he's also doing that with four and five.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna take my goddamn headphones off.

SPEAKER_07

And his response apparently, and this is third or fourth hand, I'm hearing I'm hearing some way, and some who've heard the you know got it. He said what, you're gonna say no to another billion dollars? And he's not wrong. Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sinners. So that's Avatar, Fire and Ash, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Sinners are the nominees for costume design.

SPEAKER_04

Costumes?

SPEAKER_07

Costumes.

SPEAKER_04

I will give it to Frankenstein.

SPEAKER_07

Agreed, 100%.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I think that Sinners could also take it.

SPEAKER_07

I I would agree. Yeah, because I I think that's and honestly, Marty Supreme has some phenomenal period costumes too, but it's suits that are from the 1940s versus like I mean Frankenstein. Guillermo del Toro, you are the king. Of phenomenal production design and creature design.

SPEAKER_04

And I mean beautiful, absolutely stunning. All the praises. Have you seen it?

SPEAKER_07

Not to mention everyone that works with him. I'm not.

SPEAKER_04

Kate Hawley. Mia Goth's costumes in Frankenstein.

SPEAKER_07

Every costume in Frankenstein. Stunning. It's also the odds on favorite by like so much.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Well, also not just that. It's like in costumes, it's also a sense of like special effects with prosthetics and how the creature is formed.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_04

So I'm like, in in my head, I know that like special effects and makeup is like hair and makeup are like their own You want to go to that category next. Different thing. I know it's I know it's a separate category. I understand. It is.

SPEAKER_07

100%.

SPEAKER_04

Just in the context of like the creature. And production design is its own category, too. Is its own.

SPEAKER_07

Which I mean, it all falls under the umbrella of production design. Yeah. So like, but like production design is so encompassing of so many things that isn't just costumes. Right. So I love that we have separate things, yes. And costumes.

SPEAKER_04

They deserve their own categories because they are two very different things. It's literally a movie about fashion. Yeah. But I think in just the context of Frankenstein, because of the way that the creature is, and so much of his costume is also special effects makeup.

SPEAKER_05

Give it. Give it. Give it.

SPEAKER_07

All right. Um let's see here. The next one is I'm just gonna skip that. We'll go back to that. Makeup and hairstyling because we're already here.

SPEAKER_01

All right.

SPEAKER_07

Uh we got Frankenstein. Uh I don't know how to pronounce that. It's Japanese. Uh Kokuho.

SPEAKER_04

I love giving this to white people.

SPEAKER_07

I know, but how would you pronounce that second one? Kokuho?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Kokuho? Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah?

SPEAKER_02

Kukuho.

SPEAKER_07

Kokuho. Alright. Haven't heard that one. Can you tell? Uh Sinners. Uh The Smashing Machine.

SPEAKER_03

What the fuck is that?

SPEAKER_07

The The Rock one? Like the A24 Rock one directed by one of the Safety brothers.

unknown

Nope.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. Haven't heard of it at all. It's like a serious movie. He's not like playing the role. It's like the rock action movie.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, The Rock in a serious role? I think the most serious role I've seen him in before is.

SPEAKER_07

Sure, give me a little lucky look. Look at him in this.

SPEAKER_04

Because in my head, I think the most serious role I've ever seen The Rock in was the game plan.

SPEAKER_07

That's kind of valid. He plays this dude. And he's like, he plays a fighter, but like it's not just like an action movie. It's like a serious drawing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I think is is is it a biopic? Because I think I've seen that person before. Do I know who they are? No, but I think I've seen it about them.

SPEAKER_07

He genuinely like, I mean, I know it's still the rock, but like that's quite a transformation.

SPEAKER_04

He looks That's good.

SPEAKER_07

You know?

SPEAKER_04

That's good. That's for makeup.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I will say that is good.

SPEAKER_07

All right. Um, and then the ugly stepsister is the last one. So Frankenstein, Cuckoo Hull, Sinners, The Smashing Machine, and the Ugly Stepsister. Still going Frankenstein on makeup and hairstyle.

SPEAKER_04

I still am gonna go to Frankenstein also because I've seen the whole movie. Um, but just seeing that picture alone of the rock that's Sinners makeup and hairstyling, the makeup on the vampires.

SPEAKER_07

I know that a lot of that is practiced uh CGI and stuff like that, but there's plenty of makeup in there too. Phenomenal. It deserves a mention.

SPEAKER_04

He gets like his final form with like long nails and everything. That's crazy. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_07

There's some VFX, there's some VFX.

SPEAKER_04

That's some fucking. I'm not gonna be mad if Sinners wins, obviously.

SPEAKER_07

We're not gonna be mad if Sinners wins every week.

SPEAKER_04

We're not gonna be mad if Sinners sweeps the whole fucking night.

SPEAKER_07

I don't think it's going to.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna drink an entire bottle of champagne. Champagne. Champagne. I'm gonna I'm gonna drink an entire bottle of champagne by myself.

SPEAKER_07

I'll join you by myself. We'll have our own separate bottles. Separate bottles, different locations, same time.

SPEAKER_04

Amen.

SPEAKER_07

Love it.

SPEAKER_04

Um if Sinners sweeps the entire fucking night.

SPEAKER_07

Oh, if it sweeps the whole night, oh, we're doing more than one bottle. History baby. History baby on Monday morning. More than I was after the Seahawks won the Super Bowl, and I've been a Seahawks fan my whole life. So uh yeah, we come in hungover. Film editing.

SPEAKER_04

Oh god. Okay.

SPEAKER_07

All right. We have F1. Marty Supreme.

SPEAKER_04

Damn it. I was gonna watch that movie. You haven't seen F1 yet? No, and I was gonna watch the thing is it's so funny. I was literally gonna watch it last night. It's on Apple TV. I know, and that's why I was why I was gonna watch it last night, and then I was like, I'm tired. I will still watch it. I will watch it before the Oscars, but not before this episode ends.

SPEAKER_07

That movie, well, that means you're gonna watch it Friday night or Saturday.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Uh F1, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value.

SPEAKER_04

See?

SPEAKER_07

There it is.

SPEAKER_04

And Sinners for editing.

SPEAKER_07

I'll let you go first.

SPEAKER_04

I'm trying to think because of in an editing standpoint and not just this one was pretty obvious to me.

SPEAKER_07

For you? For me, this one's this one I was like. Is it X1? No.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

No.

SPEAKER_04

Um there's no way it's that good.

SPEAKER_07

It's not that good.

SPEAKER_04

Hmm. Here's the thing. I want to pick Marty Supreme for something.

SPEAKER_07

I was right there.

SPEAKER_04

Right there for it?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. That was my second, that was my runner-up on this by like by like this much.

SPEAKER_04

That much. I want to give Marty Supreme something.

SPEAKER_07

Because to be honest, it's gonna be a runner-up in a lot of awards. Like a lot of good movies.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know if I would give it to it for editing.

SPEAKER_07

Marty Supreme uh I think came out in a wrong year. Because Marty Supreme, if it comes out in a different year, may have won a lot of these awards.

SPEAKER_04

I think if it wasn't going up against sinners. That it could. Is one battle after another? Knuckles is one. Give me their list.

SPEAKER_07

My pick for film editing is one battle after another.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Just to speak on that. One battle. Yeah, keep going.

SPEAKER_04

I was like, because when you handed me, I don't want to have I don't want to have an open dead air here.

SPEAKER_07

One battle after another, on an editing standpoint, the pacing of that movie, and a lot of that has to do with the score, I think, but the pacing of that movie is so good. And there's some really clever cuts in there. There's some fun uses of J cuts. There's some just like fun cutaways that leave you like thinking of like, oh, what happened there? There's a there's a song, Oh My Little Soldier Boy, that plays during that movie, if you remember. There was some interesting cutting around that scene. Um and then like it immediately hard cuts to her pregnant, which I thought was amusing, shooting a shooting a machine gun in the field or whatever. And then Okay, I'm just getting in the cinematography now, but then that shot is then juxtaposition of like later when her daughter's doing the exact same thing, and I'm like, ugh, great. That's a good movie. I yeah, yeah. Anyways, yeah, editing.

SPEAKER_04

For editing, I could give this to um one battle after another. I will be so happy if it goes to Sinners. Um, even I I mean, I haven't even watched F1, but I have an inkling because it's all it's a sports car movie.

SPEAKER_07

Sure, there's editing, but I wouldn't say it's anything. This thing F1 is a masterful technical movie in terms of like they actually filmed F1 cars and put tons and tons of cameras and they filmed during actual races and like the technical achievement in that movie, and it's the same director as Top Gun Maverick, and he clearly like he loves to do like crazy action supports. It's awesome. It's a lot of fun. F1 is a fun movie, it's fun in the theater as the speakers are really loud. Is the story relevant? No, and I'm a massive F1 fan, and it's super unrealistic to how Formula One is. But it's a fun movie, it's a good time. I've I've seen it more than once, I've seen it twice. And that's saying something for me.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

As a big F1 fan who thought it was really interesting.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna watch it with my boyfriend and see. He will probably have similar things.

SPEAKER_07

The opening scene is my favorite part of the movie.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

It's the Daytona or the Daytona 24 hour, and it's so fun. Brad Pitts. Brad Pitt's a lot of fun in that movie. And is it Oh my god. It's Harvey Arbad Dam. Javi Arbard Dem, I get them confused all the time when you see Del Toro now.

SPEAKER_04

I think I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna give it to one bottle after another. I'm gonna be really happy if it if Sinners wins, and I also am like, you know, if F1 wins, I won't be surprised, even though I haven't seen it.

SPEAKER_07

That one definitely I was probably Marty Supreme in one battle.

SPEAKER_04

I was like for editing. Yeah. Because my thing is that I can't think too much about I I don't remember much about the editing. That's a good thing. I know it's a good thing.

SPEAKER_07

If you don't notice the editing, that's a good thing for you. Right, right, right, right. For the most part.

SPEAKER_04

Yes. No, I know I know that it's a good thing. But when I think of like editing, I'm also thinking about like cuts and pacing to the next scene.

SPEAKER_07

Sure. And there wasn't anything crazy standoutish about Marty Supreme. Marty Supreme for that editing for that specifically. Alright, that's fair. All right, moving on. Original score. We have Bugonia, Frankenstein, Hamnet, which was composed by rep Max Rickner, who I love, by the way. Um, One Battle After Another, and Sinners. Sinners. It's Sinners, Ludwig Gorn Sinners. Ludwig He's already won multiple Oscars. He is arguably the best composer in Hollywood. And I'm a massive Hans Zimmer fan, but Ludwig currently, as we are, is on an absolute hair. He just won for Oppenheimer two years ago. He won for Black Panther. He did the tenant score. I mean, this dude.

SPEAKER_04

He's so in he's a fucking genius.

SPEAKER_07

He's so good. For score. He is, he's he's up there. I mean, and Max Rickner, and I will say the one battle after another score.

SPEAKER_04

I think he's a younger Zimmer.

SPEAKER_07

I think so too. I think so too.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

The one battle after another score, I will give it a little shout-out. I loved just a shout-out. I just I loved the piano in that of just like the weird, like kind of just like jazzy, like it it felt juxtaposed to what was going on, the very like polar opposite emotionally. Right. Just like this weird, like jazz piano that's going on in the background of like action scenes.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which you're usually expecting, like, not to say that it's not supposed to be there, but it's it's giving that opposite feel.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, which was kind of fun. And I was like, oh, this is so interesting in it.

SPEAKER_04

Not to say it's almost sarcastic.

SPEAKER_07

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. Which I thought was fun. So, like that little shout-out to that. But yeah, the spinners.

SPEAKER_04

Spinners takes it home.

SPEAKER_07

I mean, the best what is like my favorite scene that I watched.

SPEAKER_04

When they have Miles sing it. Please.

SPEAKER_07

My favorite scene I watched, and I think there was a lot of people that agree with me on this this year.

SPEAKER_04

The Juke Joint.

SPEAKER_07

Was the Jukejoint one or with all the different musicians of the whole. Yeah. I mean, that phenomenal sequence is the best thing on film this last year.

SPEAKER_04

I love tea. I love the blue.

SPEAKER_07

All right, moving in the same category, uh, same realm. Original song. Alright, I haven't heard all these, but there's a very clear winner. It's not even going to be close. Um, let me just see if you can guess. Dear Me. I don't even know what that's from.

SPEAKER_04

Um Did you write down what it's from?

SPEAKER_07

From Diane Warren. I did write down what it's from.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. Uh I Lied to You from Sinners.

SPEAKER_02

I lied to you.

SPEAKER_07

Uh Sweet Dreams of Joy from Viva Verdi. Uh Train Dreams from Train Dreams.

SPEAKER_02

That's on Netflix.

SPEAKER_07

And Golden from K-pop Demon Hunters. What do you think's gonna win, Bella?

SPEAKER_04

Step away from your fucking microphone. You're so loud.

SPEAKER_07

What do you think's gonna win, Bella? Listen.

SPEAKER_00

I it's just like I think that Golden is a good thing.

SPEAKER_07

It was like minus 4,000, which is absurd. What do you mean? That means you would have to spend 4,100, or sorry, you'd have to spend $4,000 to win $100 betting on that.

unknown

Oh my god.

SPEAKER_07

It's such a favorite to win that. It's it's it's gonna win. Like that, I'm the I'm more confident that that's gonna win than any of these other awards. Like genuinely. Yeah, there's just no way. Almost to be fair, the song kind of always is obvious.

SPEAKER_04

I here's well, here's my other thing is that um am I happy that for children, Frozen has finally been dethroned?

SPEAKER_07

I mean Encanto did that.

SPEAKER_04

Of course. It did not as much as this.

SPEAKER_07

That's fair. It did not. You're not you're right. But Encanto did that.

SPEAKER_04

I think not.

SPEAKER_07

When Encanto came out.

SPEAKER_04

Do you have children?

SPEAKER_07

Not. No. Not blood related.

SPEAKER_04

Nope. And um, I I think I think we don't talk about Bruno. Did did a number for kids, but it did not do the same effect as like golden, golden, golden closest we've been to let it go. Yeah. No, I think it's dethroned, let it go. I fully believe it. Because of the international success, I would say not even just that. I think that um I I I think have I looked at the numbers? No. Can we? Of course. Of course. Um will be.

SPEAKER_02

No. No.

SPEAKER_04

I was like, can we later? Sure, but are we going to? No. Um, I I but I do have faith in the numbers I have not looked at that they have dethroned let it go because I think one it on an international level, yes, it does, it it does fucking wonders. But I think also it ages.

SPEAKER_07

No, yeah, that's fair.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, the the that like I think people our age as well as older.

SPEAKER_07

I hated let it go.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_07

I don't I mean I hate I'm not huge.

SPEAKER_04

Let it go was kind of also like it it it was like an upbeat lullaby.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah in a way.

SPEAKER_04

It wasn't it wasn't bad, but um Golden Zoom. Oh yeah, love you, baby. Love you, of course. Um Golden, I think, will speak to multiple ages and also like K-pop K-pop fans.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_04

They are huge, they're like Filipinos when we say other Filipinos winning. That's all you really have to do for us to cheer you on is be Filipino. You would know that. I would know that. Literally, my uncle was like, Oh my god, I found out Olivia Rodrigo was half Filipino. I'm playing that bitch's music all the fucking time.

SPEAKER_07

Just immediate super fan.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, immediate well, well, not even has to be super fan, but you will get support immediately. Filipino pride is strong, baby, and I'm fucking banking on that. Um, anyways, I I'm I'm gonna put sinners.

SPEAKER_07

You're gonna put sinners as the song win.

SPEAKER_04

She just walks by in the face.

SPEAKER_02

You just gave me a point.

SPEAKER_04

I fuck you. Um I I I so I'm voting for Sinners because I believe in them and I so deeply want them to win.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I am also not going to be surprised if Golden wins.

SPEAKER_07

Me neither. Fuck you. I want Sinners to win, though.

SPEAKER_04

This is not the Grammys. Bad bunny listening. Moving on. Bad bunny, bad bunny.

SPEAKER_07

Anyways, uh production design is the next category.

SPEAKER_04

Come on, white boy.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, what's about it?

SPEAKER_04

Come on, what?

SPEAKER_07

I know more bad bunny than you do. I just did it for all of you to see. Your wife is gonna cut it out. Huh? Really? Promise? I haven't cutting it out requires me to do more work versus just cutting back and forth between these camera angles is way easier. It's not that much harder to cut it out. But uh Production Design. Frankenstein. Production design nominee number one. Frankenstein. Hamnet, Marty Supreme, one battle after another, and Sinners. Very common listing of those five movies. Love it.

SPEAKER_04

On a lot of production design.

SPEAKER_07

Production design.

SPEAKER_04

Hmm. Do I give it to Hamnet because Hamnet has been winning so many awards?

SPEAKER_07

That's fair.

SPEAKER_04

But for production design?

SPEAKER_07

For production design. You're gonna go Sinners? You want to, I know you want to. You want to pick Sinners for all of us. You just love Sinners.

SPEAKER_04

It's such a good remote.

SPEAKER_07

Do you think that Sinners is the most deserving award winner of production design compared to the other four movies? Yes. Okay, that's fair. Stand by that. I'm going with Frankenstein. Everything art department, Frankenstein. You know, that's fair.

SPEAKER_04

Well.

SPEAKER_07

There's not a ton of sense. My other thought is that like Frankenstein doesn't technically have a lot of set two, but when they do have a set, it's in incredibly describe that. Yeah. They're pretty great.

SPEAKER_04

But I'm also like, are they gonna give it Marty Supreme had some good sets too? They did. They did.

SPEAKER_07

Production design solid in that movie.

SPEAKER_04

Are they going to And One Battle have some? And this is here's the thing.

SPEAKER_07

And these are all deserved nominees, let's be honest.

SPEAKER_04

This, yeah, they all deserve it. This is not to diminish the movie. It's just We're just making a selection.

SPEAKER_07

I'm gonna say somebody's gotta win.

SPEAKER_04

Are they gonna give it to a Netflix movie?

SPEAKER_07

Yes.

SPEAKER_04

You think so? Because Frankenstein was only in theaters for like what? A week and a half, two weeks.

SPEAKER_07

They're gonnaadays. I know. I mean the Peaky Blinders movie is in theaters right now, very limited release.

SPEAKER_04

Train Dreams is also on Netflix now, which is where I was gonna go watch it. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Me and a man. Ten more days till Peaky Blinders movie is on Netflix. I'm not gonna drive 25 miles, which is a lot closer than a whole lot of other people in this country and the world have access to the Peaky Blinders movie. But the closest is the Alamo Draft House in LA.

SPEAKER_04

You know what? I was really, really happy that was like at my fucking theater.

SPEAKER_07

What?

SPEAKER_04

Iron Lung.

SPEAKER_06

Really?

SPEAKER_04

It was it was at my local, next to my house theater. That was not so happy. I was like, this is a I cried. I bought my ticket immediately. You loved it. It was so good. By the way. I haven't talked about it yet, like on my my TikTok account. You should. Oh, I know. I will I listen, things keep getting in the way. Iron Lung, what I was impressed. Okay.

SPEAKER_07

It's a horror, isn't it? It's like thriller.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. I don't know much about it other than Markiplier. But I think it's a good idea. Now shut the fuck up. Shut the fuck up.

SPEAKER_04

Now think about Markiplier in a harness.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

Do it again. Okay. Do it again. It was okay. Besides me just being like mommy Markiplier, um, it was it was really good. And I was really, I'm honest, genuinely, I'm proud of his acting. I'm proud of the production. I'm proud of it coming together at all and being like, I I I think it went, I know for sure it went nationwide in like thousands of fucking movie theaters. It might have gone international.

SPEAKER_07

I don't know. I don't know enough about it.

SPEAKER_04

I need to go look again.

SPEAKER_07

Even just being like even just being a national release. Like it's a national release.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, and he's not just domestic to his three times as much as he paid for.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. And he gave everybody beautiful bonuses. What a fucking It's all basically just his YouTube audience. It's but he has a giant YouTube following. It's like, oh what? It's really fucking. That was really smart.

SPEAKER_04

If I had a few million followers, I would do the same thing. It was really good. Well done, Mark. It was really good, Mark. I'm so proud of you.

SPEAKER_07

Big W for you.

SPEAKER_04

I'm so, so proud of you. Big World for that.

SPEAKER_07

Sound. I've already told you which I picked to win this.

SPEAKER_04

F1.

SPEAKER_07

F1.

SPEAKER_04

What else is that?

SPEAKER_07

We got Frankenstein in there, one battle after another, Sinners and Sierra. Which was the international.

SPEAKER_04

I'm thinking, I'm like, well, sound is not music.

SPEAKER_07

Sound is not music. Sound design, sound mixing, all that fun stuff. I think Sinners have some really good sound design. Um I mean, all these all these movies obviously had good sound design. They're nominated for a reason. But F1 sound design was one more time. Really solid. Really solid stuff. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Every time you hand it to me, it moves.

SPEAKER_07

Um, F1's sound design is great. And they very realistically captured the sounds of those cars.

SPEAKER_04

And I'm gonna give it to F1 because I don't want to give it to One Battle after.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, every time you hand it to me, it also Uh. Next we have Visual Effects. The nominees being very different than most of the other movies. I have a feeling you know what I know which one you're gonna pick. Alright, so we have Formula One, we have Jurassic World Rebirth, you have Avatar Fire and Ash, you have The Lost Bus. Is that Matthew McConaughey Apple TV one? Moving on. And you have Sinners. Sinners. Those are good visual effects.

SPEAKER_04

Is that your I'm I feel like it might go to Avatar.

SPEAKER_01

Spoiler alert, that's what I did.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I think it's gonna go to Avatar because that's the whole movie.

SPEAKER_07

The entire movie is visual effects, which has one visual effects both the other times. Right. Avatar and avatar way of water. Right. Both one does.

SPEAKER_04

I'm sure that it's going to win. Do I want it to go to Sinners? Absolutely. I will always want it to go to Sinners.

SPEAKER_07

Yep. But we're in a full agreement here.

SPEAKER_04

I think it's gonna go to Avatars.

SPEAKER_07

Probably gonna go to Avatar, but we both want Sinners to win.

SPEAKER_04

Got it.

SPEAKER_07

All right, now we're going. Into the fun awards that we care about. First of all, directing. Directing. I want to throw up. The best director we had Hamnet with Chloe Zell. Love her. Marty Supreme, Josh Safty, One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson. Sentimental Value, Joachim Thirier, I think. Sinners Ryan Kugler. It feels like a two-horse race to me. You might want to throw Jazz Safty in there, but it it definitely, as far as the odds makers are saying it's a two-horse race between Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Kugler, those two movies are the pinnacle of this year's Oscars, I would say. And they're going to take almost all the major awards between the two of them. Would you like to say who you think is going to win for best director?

SPEAKER_04

Sure. One, two, three. Paul Thomas. Ryan Kugler. But I will also say, even without watching the movie, I think just because of how much I've heard of it, I think Amnet also has its foot in the door.

SPEAKER_07

For sure. I would say this should go to Paul Thomas Anderson, and that's no knock on any of their not nominees. You can call this a legacy award if you want. PTA has been doing this for a long time. He's an established director.

SPEAKER_04

Has he ever won this award? No, he's never won this award. Damn, shoddy.

SPEAKER_07

Sucks. And this is by far his most commercially successful movie he's ever made. It's his most popular movie he's ever made. It is a deserving winner, regardless of if Sinners or One Battle wins this, because I think it's going to be one of those two. They're both deserving winners of this award. PTA's direction, in my opinion, is the best of the last of the year that I saw. That is the most standout thing in that movie, is the direction of that movie. To me. My favorite part of that movie is the direction.

SPEAKER_04

And that's fair. I'm gonna I'm gonna say something, and I think film film bros are gonna hate me for it.

SPEAKER_07

It's okay. Let them hate.

SPEAKER_04

I don't like you anyways. We don't get along in the first place. I think that Sinners is a harder movie to direct than one battle after another.

SPEAKER_02

That's fair.

SPEAKER_04

I think even the characters alone with they don't feel as oh god, I'm gonna shoot myself in the foot.

SPEAKER_07

Like, I got I got retorts for whatever's about to come out of your mouth.

SPEAKER_04

I'm so sorry. It's I'm I don't want to be mean, but this is just what I think.

SPEAKER_07

That's okay. This is your opinion, and you're entitled to your opinion, and it's your opinion, and we're just sharing it. If you don't like our opinions, you don't have to listen. It's okay.

SPEAKER_04

Please don't blacklist me. I still want to be an actress, and this me being an actor is much more important to me.

SPEAKER_07

That was our concern with making this podcast. Let's not like it.

SPEAKER_00

It's all we have to make our own things. Right. Woo boo boo boo boo woo-woo.

SPEAKER_04

I think the characters in Sinners are more complex than in one battle after another.

SPEAKER_07

I don't think that that is the case overall. I think that the leading characters are more complex, but the overall ensemble is more complex in one battle after another. The supporting roles in one battle have so many nuances. But not only is directing isn't only just about the acting. Right, I know. It's so much about everything else that goes into it as well. They're both phenomenal and deserving. I think that's a good thing.

SPEAKER_04

I think the most important We're splitting hairs here, really. I think the most complex character in one battle after another is the daughter.

SPEAKER_07

I would agree. Absolutely.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and I think she did a phenomenal fucking job.

SPEAKER_07

Phenomenal job.

SPEAKER_04

I I think the most confusing character to date where I'm like, I still don't understand what your fucking motives were was.

SPEAKER_05

Yes! What the fuck? I don't get it.

SPEAKER_07

What are your motives, dude? Are you who are you? He wants to be a Christmas adventurer. He wants to be in the racism club. The elite racism club.

SPEAKER_04

Then why did you fuck a black woman? Because other than she's hot.

SPEAKER_07

Well, is it Yes?

SPEAKER_04

There. If you're gonna be in the fucking racist club, I'd hope that there's more than that.

SPEAKER_07

Maybe he likes to, you know, jump rope with the rules. By the way, uh my work is getting some I told you, like my work is getting way busier, so woo!

unknown

Woo!

SPEAKER_07

This will be fun. We are moving on. We got five more to go. Ooh, no, we don't. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven more to go.

SPEAKER_00

Keep going!

SPEAKER_07

Actor in a supporting role.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, God.

SPEAKER_07

We have Benicio del Toro, one battle after another, the sensei.

unknown

Gotta love him in that movie.

SPEAKER_07

We have Jacob Alordi, Frankenstein. You have Delroy Lindo from Sinners, Sean Penn, one battle after another, and Stellan Skarsgard from Sentimental Value, which makes you want to watch Sentimental Value even more because Stella Skarsgard is in it. I love Stellan Skarsgard. I love all the Skarsgards. They're all phenomenal.

SPEAKER_04

They all decided to be actors.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, so I will say I have what I want to win and what I think is gonna win are two different things here. I want Denisefield Toro to win this because I loved him in one battle after another. He was so funny. He was the perfect Who deserves it? I think Sean Penn's gonna win. I hate you. I think Sean Penn's gonna win.

SPEAKER_03

I hate you.

SPEAKER_07

I know who you're gonna say, Miss Sinners fan, and there's nothing wrong with that.

SPEAKER_04

They deserve it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

They all deserve it. Jacob Alordi also deserves it.

SPEAKER_04

Jacob Alordi does deserve it.

SPEAKER_07

I mean, they're phenomenal act. These are re this was just hard. And I haven't even seen the Skarsgrad one, but I bet you that's a really good performance. Yeah. They always give good performances. I think Sean Penn's gonna win. Sean Penn's performance is phenomenal.

SPEAKER_04

I am putting all my faith in Delroy.

SPEAKER_07

All right.

SPEAKER_04

All of it. Alright. Every single Delroy.

SPEAKER_07

Let's go. Can't wait to pie you in the face.

SPEAKER_04

Shut the fuck up. God.

SPEAKER_07

I believe we have actress in the supporting rule next.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um, it is. You want to read them out? Yeah, I'll read it since I'm holding it. L Fanning, sentimental value. Did not know.

SPEAKER_07

We got L. Fanning and Skarsgard in the supporting. Who's the leading in that?

SPEAKER_04

I don't know.

SPEAKER_07

Anyways.

SPEAKER_04

Ooh, I don't want to read this. I'm gonna butcher your name and I'm so sorry.

SPEAKER_07

I'm so happy that I'm not the only one butchering names on this podcast.

SPEAKER_04

Inga Imbust daughter? Imbust daughter Lilias.

SPEAKER_07

That one was tough. Apologies.

SPEAKER_04

Lilius. I'm gonna say that. Inga in embust daughter Lilius.

SPEAKER_07

Yep, that's tough.

SPEAKER_04

Send him out of value.

SPEAKER_07

That's brutal. Uh yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I have a dyslexia. I have an excuse. Kind of. Um Amy Madigan. Weapons.

SPEAKER_07

Oh, yes. Have you seen weapons?

SPEAKER_04

I have.

SPEAKER_07

She's the the grandma. I like weapons.

SPEAKER_04

I didn't like it.

SPEAKER_07

Do you know what my favorite part of edit of weapons was? What? The editing. I thought the editing was great.

SPEAKER_04

Like the You know, that's fair, actually.

SPEAKER_07

The like multiple perspective thing and all that. That was fun. Oh yeah, that was cool.

SPEAKER_04

I my thing about weapons that I didn't like is that there was no clear motive for anything.

SPEAKER_07

The first half was way better than the second half.

SPEAKER_04

Other than it being like, oh, you wrap hair around this stick and then you break it, and that's what makes them voodoo ritual. Yeah. That's what makes them do whatever you wanted them to do.

SPEAKER_07

There's no motivation behind it other than I'm just gonna control it. Because I'm like, it never got to why does she say she said she very offhandedly was like, they're helping me live longer or something like that. She was dying and they're helping me live longer.

SPEAKER_04

That wasn't enough to be like, hey, how long have you been alive? What? How long have you been doing this? Why do you still need to be alive? What are you avoiding?

SPEAKER_07

What are you So what like that movie was great until you realized actually what was happening, and then it was like, oh, this is kind of lame. The up to it, I was like, well, this is fun.

SPEAKER_04

I know a lot of people that really enjoyed weapons. I unfortunately am not in that crime.

SPEAKER_07

I liked the first half, and then I started to, yeah, like I said. Anyways. And who was it on standing?

SPEAKER_05

Here's the thing, it is that it's that like, I love you because I love Annie so deeply. Um, and I'm so scared of butchering your name, and I've said it before, but now that I have cameras on me and alcohol, I'm so scared, and there's a blinding light.

SPEAKER_07

I hate this feeling. I'm not the only one reading out names. It's great.

SPEAKER_04

I'm giving myself a second because I am terrified.

SPEAKER_07

It's okay.

SPEAKER_01

She's great in the movie.

SPEAKER_04

Wayumi?

SPEAKER_01

I think that's right.

SPEAKER_04

Wayun Wayun me. Wayun me. Masaku. That one's easier. Your last name is actually easier for me to say.

SPEAKER_06

She's great.

SPEAKER_07

She's great.

SPEAKER_04

I am just nervous. I really don't want to be disrespectful. Because I have such high respect for her.

SPEAKER_07

She's phenomenal. She's a great runner up.

SPEAKER_04

I'll fucking throw the phone at you. You know who I have to do. I can see it. I can see it. And here's the thing. Tiana Taylor also She's so good. She was so good, but she also is not in this movie as much.

SPEAKER_06

She is great.

SPEAKER_04

Wayumi is in more of her movie. She's a big she's a big pivotal part of this. Yeah. In multiple parts. Tiana is also a pivotal part of her movie.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I think that they are both phenomenal. I think that they are both beautiful black women.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Amen. They are they are stunning and they are talented and they are both very deserving. And I'm giving it to centers.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. So back to what we were talking about.

SPEAKER_04

Back to it. Sorry, my camera.

SPEAKER_07

Because uh my camera had no space storage. I do still think Tiana Taylor's gonna win that. She's great. Iconic.

SPEAKER_04

And you know what? And I'll take a pie in the face for that. If that is the deciding factor of what gives me a pie in the face and not, I'll stand to my guns.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, that's fair.

SPEAKER_04

Here's my other thing. If it goes to just a different black woman, I'm not mad. If it goes to another deserving person, great.

SPEAKER_07

Fair.

SPEAKER_04

Great.

SPEAKER_07

Alright. Couple left. We just got the writing, the leads, and the best picture. Got it. So first we have writing adapted screenplay, because they split this up. Bogonia. Frankenstein. Hamnet, one battle after another. And Train Dreams.

SPEAKER_04

Hamnet.

SPEAKER_07

Hamnet. Fair.

SPEAKER_04

I'm going with Hamnet.

SPEAKER_07

You're going with Hamlet.

SPEAKER_04

I here's my thing. I've watched half of Bogonia.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. Emma Stone's in that, right?

SPEAKER_04

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_07

I'm not saying Emma's been doing some interesting movies recently.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

She's been really exploring her sexuality. Among other things, yes. Um, let's call it non-traditional narratives.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Which is cool as fuck. Yeah, it is cool.

SPEAKER_07

Um I was that movie Poor Things.

SPEAKER_04

Poor Things is where I was like, you were you were learning sexuality in that moment. Um I I did not finish Bogonia.

SPEAKER_07

Why is that? You just fell asleep or no, I I wanted to do something else. That's not a good sign, but yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And it's not, it's like I I it's one of those things where I was like, no, I need to finish this movie, and I I hear good things about it, but I haven't been able to bring myself back to it.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, that's fair.

SPEAKER_04

Where I'm like, oh, but I want to watch eternity.

SPEAKER_07

I want to watch Hamnet again.

SPEAKER_03

Oh. I want to watch it a first time.

SPEAKER_07

Um my pick was one battle after another.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe you can do that. For who I think is going to win this.

SPEAKER_07

Again, I want to specify this is who I think is going to win, not who I want to win.

SPEAKER_04

I really always go with what I want to win.

SPEAKER_07

I want, I want one battle with this. What's your hate on one battle, man? It's a good movie. You enjoyed it when we watched it.

SPEAKER_04

That's my hate towards PTA. What do you hate PTA for? Licorice Pizza.

SPEAKER_07

You'll never forgive him for licorice pizza. Nope. Original screenplay. Blue Moon. It was just an accident. Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, and Sinners. I think we're gonna be pretty uh in agreement on Dishwin.

SPEAKER_04

What's the catalog we're gonna?

SPEAKER_07

Uh, they'll be writing original screenplay. Are you not gonna pick Sinners?

SPEAKER_04

I want Sinners.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, I'm picking Sinners. Were you thinking Marty, maybe?

SPEAKER_04

I think maybe Marty.

SPEAKER_07

Marty. I could see Marty winning this.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

I do think Sinners will win this.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, because Marty.

SPEAKER_07

It's an original screenplay. It is very original, too.

SPEAKER_04

It is original. Very original. I think because Marty Supreme is also based off of a real person.

SPEAKER_07

Right. It was. Marty Supreme's a great movie. And like I said earlier, like it just came out in a bad year when you have to go up against Sinners in one battle in all the awards shows, so it's just not winning them. In any other year, maybe it has a much better chance.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe last year.

SPEAKER_07

Maybe. I I could definitely see it winning more awards last year than it did this year. Or probably will end up winning this year. I you know, we'll see what happens, but the odds.

SPEAKER_04

I do believe that that's my favorite. I do believe that Marty Supreme deserves its flowers.

SPEAKER_07

Um the next category we have In the arts. Is actor in a leading role. Wait. Plot twist. Um we have Wagner Morah. I'm so sorry. Secret Agent, Michael B. Jordan, Sinners, Ethan Hawk, Blue Moon, Leonardo DiCaprio, one battle after another, Timothy Chalome, Marty Supreme.

SPEAKER_04

Michael B. Jordan.

SPEAKER_07

Michael B. Jordan. Fair. I did pick Timothy Chalamet, actually. Which I forgot that I did earlier because I was like, oh, I didn't pick him. No, I did. I I did write him down. I went, you know what? I'm just like gonna.

SPEAKER_04

Do you think what he said with Matthew McConaughey is going to deter the votes are already in, though. Someone said, here's the thing, and I think that this is one of the funniest things that I've ever heard, but maybe one of the truest things I've heard about about Timothy recently is that Timothy Shalamy. Shalomai, Shalamu, uh sorry, that's not what I'm I didn't mean to be mean about your last name. Um uh Timothy Chalamet would have hated Timothy Kardashian. Because it's like when you go back and you look at even his past performances like on stage and and past interviews talking about the arts, he just and I don't know the man, obviously, but he just seems to have such like a deeper understanding and respect for all forms of art than he did in that moment with Matthew McConaughey. It's also learning that like his mother is a ballerina.

SPEAKER_07

Child mazes? Yeah, interesting.

SPEAKER_04

Why the fuck would you say that? Why would you say that when every when when so much of the art that we have today in dance and acting, like all all of dance stems from ballet? Ballet is the first art form of dance in that I've learned. I was like, someone will go back and be like, actually, in 300 BC.

SPEAKER_07

Of just like our modern contemporary form of dance thing like that was the root.

SPEAKER_04

Ballet is the root of all dance.

SPEAKER_07

I wrote a paper in college about this. About how film is the ultimate art form because it's a combination of every other art form.

SPEAKER_04

I'll take it.

SPEAKER_07

Including yes, theater, even painting, because light, color, I mean, obviously photography, music, acting. I mean, it is just a gigantic combination of every form, including and obviously musicals have dancing. Like that isn't that history isn't lost on us.

SPEAKER_04

So you literally wouldn't have to be a little bit of a part of me wants to like opera.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. I'm like, I'm not interested in opera per se. Yeah. As a as a pastime.

SPEAKER_04

That's okay.

SPEAKER_07

But I don't know why you like it. But there's a respect to it. Sure. I well, actually, I'd probably more interested in mo in opera than people my age, just because I like I grew up in choir and I'm a big Italian fan, so I just like the language.

SPEAKER_04

I think that you'll like opera.

SPEAKER_07

I do like opera. Like Caverti, uh Paverti, what is his name?

SPEAKER_04

I don't know. I will say that I am somebody that I'm I I haven't had. I don't know much about opera.

SPEAKER_07

You probably have heard it.

SPEAKER_04

Probably, I believe it.

SPEAKER_07

No? I don't know what the weird stars are. You know, you know.

SPEAKER_04

Somebody.

SPEAKER_07

I hit the notes somehow. Anyways. Um it was good. Yeah, they were there.

SPEAKER_04

Um I I don't know much about opera, but I have a deep respect for opera for what it has started is.

SPEAKER_07

Josh Grobin fam, you know. Andrea Buccelli. Andre Bucelli also.

SPEAKER_04

I um uh and I I have a I have big respect, and I'm trained in ballet.

SPEAKER_07

Fair enough.

SPEAKER_04

And I know that like I I literally could not understand other forms of dance without that being my foundation. So it's that's fair.

SPEAKER_07

And you were trained in musical theater and all that stuff. Like you went to school for that. So like I totally get where you're coming from in that perspective. Yes, it's a lot. I want to try and give him the benefit of the doubt. I haven't seen the whole clip. Said something off-handed. Exactly. Like, I'm trying to be like, again, I've literally seen just the bolt of the clip.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

I don't I haven't even seen the clip, I've just seen like comments of people saying it. You haven't seen the clip? I haven't even seen the clip. Oh girl, it's not good. So, like, I'll show you after this. Fair. I want to believe, because I've seen him talk about how he's very focused on like, I want to be the best actor of all time, and he's even said that.

SPEAKER_04

And that was something that I commented to my friend's video about it. Um, also still dom.

SPEAKER_07

He's just like one track mind of like, I just want to act. So I wanna I want to assume that's the position he's coming from, and that I just care about acting for the screen, and that's all I care about. But you don't have to discredit what came before you at the same time. I don't know.

SPEAKER_04

Well, it's not that well the clip itself was him saying, I don't want to be thrown into something that people don't care about, that's trying to keep something alive.

SPEAKER_07

That he's saying that he doesn't care about keeping opera alive.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and that he thinks that opera and ballet are both dying arts. I think also um that I commented, I was like, for someone that's made it very clear that you want to be one of the greats, I would expect that one of the greats has great respect for other forms. Who knows?

SPEAKER_07

Maybe a few years from now he's gonna regret those comments, and it's just the comments of a 20-something-year-old young guy that's gonna be.

SPEAKER_04

I don't want someone to judge me about what I said in my twenties.

SPEAKER_07

I'm sure there's things we're gonna say in this microphone. I'm sure there's things we're gonna say in this microphone that we're gonna regret later. That'll just be out there for the world.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I try so hard to avoid it. It's gonna be us butchering everyone's names. Everyone's names.

SPEAKER_07

And all these random opinions and one-off things we talk about, you know. It's gonna happen.

SPEAKER_04

Um And I'm counting on you to edit those out before you ruin my career.

SPEAKER_07

You sh I can't promise every one of them is gonna make it.

SPEAKER_04

Harrison.

SPEAKER_07

You better watch it then. Are you? I'm doing my best. All right. Actress in a leading role. Two left. We're almost there.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_07

We have Rose Byrne. If I had legs, I'd kick you, which by the way, is a great title. How have we not talked? Like, I don't know what that movie is. That's a great title. Yeah. Uh Kate Hudson. Love you, Kate. Uh Song Sung Blue. Uh Renat Renzeev. Sentimental value. God, a lot of sentimental value.

SPEAKER_04

That's why I was saying in the beginning, I was like, it's nominated for a lot.

SPEAKER_07

Emma Stone, Bugonia, and Jesse Buckley for Hamnet.

SPEAKER_04

Hamnet.

SPEAKER_07

Hamnet.

SPEAKER_04

Hamnet.

SPEAKER_07

Hamnet.

SPEAKER_04

It's also, it's just won every other movie.

SPEAKER_07

It's won everything. And it's it's also very heavily favored in this category.

SPEAKER_04

Emma, I'm so sorry you shaved your head for this.

SPEAKER_07

Emma, you've won multiple Oscars already.

SPEAKER_04

You're Emma, you did win the Oscar before.

SPEAKER_07

You've done this before. You're good. You're great. At least you got that before.

SPEAKER_04

I'm gonna get the topic. We're gonna give it to Jesse.

SPEAKER_07

We're gonna give it to Jesse. And we finally arrive at the final award of the night. Debig one. We have Bogonia, Formula One, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Train Dreams, One Battle After Another, and Sinners. Now And the odds on this, by the way, are razor thin. It is a toss up on this one. Now I picked so I picked so like I actually was trying to do this fairly. I picked, they both won the writing award in their separate categories because they're nominated for different ones. I gave the directing nod to Paul Thomas Anderson and the best picture nod I'm giving to Sinners. Which means that they win two, they both won, in my brain, they were gonna win two the two main awards. Like they're gonna split it. That's who I'm picking. I think Sinners is going to very narrowly edge out one battle after one.

SPEAKER_04

Ryan, I'm so proud of you for winning Best Picture.

SPEAKER_07

I would not be surprised if we're sitting here in a week and one battle has won it. It would be a deserving winner. Either one of them is a deserving winner in my brain. They're both phenomenal movies. I s I hope and I do think that Sinners is going to win by that much. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I I I I I pray to God.

SPEAKER_07

Yours is more of a hope.

unknown

I pray to God.

SPEAKER_04

It it it's a big thing.

SPEAKER_07

Or at least you're giving me the impression that it's more of a hope when you actually think one battle's gonna win somehow.

SPEAKER_04

I don't think that one.

SPEAKER_07

I here's my thing is that I mean do you think any other movie has a chance besides Linux?

SPEAKER_04

Okay, so here's here's my shit. Here's my shit. And this is this goes back to last year. I don't think that Amelia Perez should have won as much as it did, but it did. I I think if Marty Supreme was last year, I think it Marty Supreme would win Best Picture Hands Four.

SPEAKER_07

If Marty had been, yep, I would agree with you. Um this the butt Hamnet too, by the way, probably.

SPEAKER_04

Um with that being said, I am uh it feels more like a hope for sinners winning because I've seen things that I don't believe deserve to win win. I'm giving it to sinners because not not just as a hope and a dream, but it's it's so deserving. It is and I think it's something that's gonna mean it's gonna mean so much, not just to that cast and crew that is up on that stage, but it's gonna mean so much for the people that are friends, family, audience, f movie lovers. Just it's gonna mean so much in history and in culture. And I think I think especially right now, I could really we need a win. I could really use that.

SPEAKER_07

We could use a W. Let's go, sinners.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and I think also in in not to say in fear. I don't want to say the best picture winner 2027. We haven't even got there yet, and I already have I already have issues. I already have issues with the Odyssey.

SPEAKER_03

I already, Christopher, why wasn't there blood on the I don't know? Why wasn't there blood on the sword when he got stabbed in the eye?

SPEAKER_07

There better be blood on that funnel. Is there not? There better be frickin' blood on the funnel.

SPEAKER_03

It doesn't make sense.

SPEAKER_07

It makes no sense, Nolan. I need to I need to pause it and like it. Why did you show that? I need to like watch it frame by frame to be like, what am I looking at here? How did that not happen? Why are they reacting? Why would you show the city? If you haven't seen if you haven't seen the Odyssey prologue, which we watch together when we watch one battle after another, uh spoilers for the Odyssey prologue, but there's a sword that gets stabbed into an individual and then pulled out and it's clean. And it's a clean glitch.

SPEAKER_00

A clean knife, and that's why they're like, oh, no one's in this Trojan horse.

SPEAKER_07

It doesn't make any sense that if you stab somebody in the city, like stabbing him to make sure there's no one in it, and he stabs a dude. I think it's like his shoulder. I don't know if it's his eye.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like it was his.

SPEAKER_07

But it was it was it was up here somewhere.

SPEAKER_00

It has it would have been clean.

SPEAKER_07

It would have definitely been. And they like all his friends cover his mouth so he doesn't make any noise. Right. Like he clearly got stabbed. Big plot hole. No blood. He pulls it out. Yeah. And it's broad daylight at that time. Nobody hears anything. Nothing.

SPEAKER_00

Not a whimper.

SPEAKER_07

They bring the horse in and then the rest of it's amazing.

SPEAKER_04

But yeah, so I need answers for that. Beyond that, I love your cast. I love your cast detail.

SPEAKER_07

If you just didn't add CGI blood to the sword so that you didn't have to actually do the practical effect. I had a friend that did background on it, actually. Maybe they're gonna add CGI blood to the sword in the final cut, and it's just because it was a program.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe. I don't know. Maybe that's what I'm hoping a little bit, but I'm like, it doesn't make sense.

SPEAKER_07

No one doesn't do CG. He literally didn't use CG for the nuke. It was practical. I mean, he didn't actually let off a nuke, but like he could have made a CG nuke. He didn't, he decided to not even do that.

SPEAKER_05

Harrison, for like 30 seconds, I was like, that's so unethical.

SPEAKER_07

No, he did not actually light off a nuke. They just did a ton of miniatures and practical explosions and all sorts of stuff to make it look real. It doesn't look that real.

SPEAKER_04

Anyways, that is why I'm not sure. Anyways, the best picture Ryan Kugler's.

SPEAKER_07

Ryan Kugler's Sinners. We are in agreement. We're rooting for sinners on that one. My God, man. That's it. Uh I don't know how long this episode was because I had to cut a couple times, but it's definitely over an hour, if not two. What's the last movie you watched? I haven't seen a single movie since I saw you last. Not one. Damn. I was moving. Yeah, it's fair. I saw one, two episodes of the show Clarkson's Farm last night while eating in and out. Great show, by the way. Good stuff. I'll be going to his pub in the UK this summer when I get there. Very soon. We're gonna have to backlog some episodes because I'm gonna be gone for two weeks.

SPEAKER_04

I know.

SPEAKER_07

Or you're gonna have some have to have some guests on or something. We'll figure it out.

SPEAKER_04

We'll get there when we get there, but at this very moment, don't make me think that far ahead.

SPEAKER_07

What have you watched? Let's close this up real quick. Because I'm sure most of you have clicked off at this point.

SPEAKER_04

And that's okay. Sorry. Um, I watched Eternity. I finally watched Eternity. I've been wanting to watch my friends um when it first came out were like, this hit me hard. Um Billie Eilish hit me hard and soft. Um blacktop big t-shirt, Billie Eilish. And I finally watched it because it went on Apple TV.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_04

Phenomenal. All right. I will I want to watch it again, and at the same time, I'm not ready.

unknown

Fair.

SPEAKER_04

I want to watch it with my boyfriend, but I'm also like, I'm not ready to cry like that again.

SPEAKER_07

Also fair.

SPEAKER_04

It was really good.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. Um something I really want to watch. Project Hail Mary. I've heard just came out. That looks good.

SPEAKER_04

Um watch that.

SPEAKER_07

I had friends say that they do reading about it. I know nothing about it other than I saw a singular trailer for it. Very nice. And I went, that looks fun. I should go see that. And I know nothing about it other than.

SPEAKER_04

Solid, solid, solid. I finished Stranger Things. Oh.

SPEAKER_07

Why'd you why'd you throw that in there? Because now I want to talk about it, but we cannot do that. Next time. Actually, the one after that. Because next time is Oscar reaction. Maybe next time, if not the one after that.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe we'll come back to Stranger Things. We'll do a second part of the same way that they were like, here's here's three separate dates to finish it off. And here's a two-hour, one episode for Stranger Things. Here's a movie for the last episode of a TV show.

SPEAKER_07

Anything else you'd like to add before we sign off from this? Thanks for watching. By far longest episode. Um we'll see y'all uh next week. Enjoy the Oscars and uh enjoy Bella getting a pine in the head. Tune in for that, which will be or we're gonna do at the front and at the end of the episode.

SPEAKER_05

See you guys later. Bye bye. Bye.
