On this week's episode we react to the results of this year's Oscars and the loser of last week's bet gets a pie in the face.
Shall we? With a new drink this time. Cheers.
SPEAKER_03Welcome to the Shot On Film Podcast.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right. Welcome back. To another episode. Post Oscar. Sit-down debrief therapy session.
SPEAKER_03I'm happy that I've had a couple days before. Count back to whatever film this. Because I was infuriated.
SPEAKER_01What infuriated? Are we going to just jump right in?
SPEAKER_03You want to go category? We can go category by category.
SPEAKER_01We're definitely going to do that at some point when we go over who won and who's getting pied.
SPEAKER_03In my paint shirt.
SPEAKER_01If you can't tell by the outfits we're wearing.
SPEAKER_03Hey, I will say that I got this t-shirt from uh Childish Gambino.
SPEAKER_01That's pretty dope.
SPEAKER_03And it's not like a cute shirt. I got it from working background on uh Swarm. But I'm never gonna get rid of it because he gave it to me.
SPEAKER_01Right, but you're gonna get pie on it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's like it's my paint shirt.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03So I'll I get it, I get it messy and I come back. It's my it's my creative shirt, and this is a creative Alright.
SPEAKER_01I guess let's start with favorite moment of the night from the Oscars. What was your favorite moment? There was a number. Michael B. Jordan. Yeah, I figured. There was a number of good moments.
SPEAKER_03I was like, it wasn't Viola Davis again, but it had the same energy of Michael B.
SPEAKER_01Jordan.
SPEAKER_03Really good.
SPEAKER_01It did.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It did.
SPEAKER_03I I was forgiving.
SPEAKER_01Same energy.
SPEAKER_03So happy. And it it felt well deserved. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Well deserved. And it felt I mean the dude played two people.
SPEAKER_03Yes, that is so it it's a lot to play two people. It's a lot to learn double lines. Yes. To like have a dimple. Yes. That's insane.
SPEAKER_01Impressive stuff. Not to mention that impressive.
SPEAKER_03Different character work and to like remember like who has what. Which is like that's hard.
SPEAKER_01Because I know the other actors on set were like being it was difficult for them acting alongside.
SPEAKER_03It's not to say that it's like to do paperwork for like two different characters, but when you're like really in it to be like who thought this way? And what did they agree on? What did they disagree on? And to show that in your physicality. Yeah, I like that too. So I'm like to be like, you have to think something else. And even though you're in the same environment, same thing.
SPEAKER_01That's not it was a tough, tough role.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Then he nailed it in a well-deserved streak of awards that he won.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. When he was like, all these people that came before me and my ancestors, I was like, you have always been up there for me.
SPEAKER_01It was great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That was great.
SPEAKER_03That was my favorite moment.
SPEAKER_01That was your favorite moment.
SPEAKER_03That was my favorite moment. Because I think I'm gonna I I'll hold that for a second.
SPEAKER_01Side note, I thought Conan was pretty great as a host.
SPEAKER_03That was funny. He was really funny.
SPEAKER_01He had some really good stuff. I think I heard that they invited him lifetime host. He can host anytime he wants, apparently.
SPEAKER_03Hey. Does that mean that like if they give it to somebody and then Conan's like, I would really like to host this year, that they just gotta be like that person out. Sorry, Shade. See you next year.
SPEAKER_01That was terrible. What was that? What happened was I thought you were wanting to be dapped up, and then I did this and then the hand didn't fall immediately. So I went, Am I misreading what you want from me? So I moved it out of the way as you decided to dap me up. That's what happened. I'm bad at social interactions. Autism. Anyways, um Michael B. Jordan was probably my favorite moment of the night. However, I guess I'll pick a different one just to be different and say a different thing, which you're not gonna like as much. But I liked watching PTA win for best director. Um I like seeing deserved award winners, and maybe you can call it a legacy award, but the dude has put out some great films and he deserves to have an Oscar for Best Director.
SPEAKER_03Ironically, he I would watch people win.
SPEAKER_01He is like another major director to win their first best directing actor, directing Leonardo DiCaprio. Martin Scorsese won his first best director and then James Cameron, Titanic. Like Leo gets uh director's best director nods, I guess.
SPEAKER_03But he doesn't 41?
SPEAKER_01Wait, for this? No, no, no.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no. When he won his Oscar, he was like in his 40s.
SPEAKER_01How old was he in 2016? I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna say 40.
SPEAKER_0110 years minus whatever he is now. He was in his 40s. That was fun though, watching PTA win. Um I just I like seeing like I said, I like seeing people that deserve praise, getting praise and recognition. And the dude has an amazing career and he's deserved more than one Oscar, as many people have deserved more than one, more Oscars than they have. And then you have people like Ludwig Gorenson, who is now the second most winning composer of all time. And he's young. He's got more Oscars than Hans Zimmer.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01He has more Oscars than Hans Zimmer now.
SPEAKER_03And I will say, I'll go on record, I'm not Hans.
SPEAKER_01Should have more than two.
SPEAKER_03I'm not afraid to go back and watch more of PTA's movies.
SPEAKER_01You can skip Licorice Pizza, you don't need to go back and watch it.
SPEAKER_03I will never watch that movie ever again.
SPEAKER_01Have you seen There Will Be Blood? That movie's phenomenal. Okay, that one's great. Like, really, really great. Start there.
SPEAKER_03And then go where?
SPEAKER_01Deanna Day Lewis, I mean, Slay.
SPEAKER_03Is such a good actor. Slay. I'm a big actor person.
SPEAKER_01Uh Phantom Thread's good. Um Boogie Knights is good. Punch Junk Love is good. Magnolia's good. Uh I mean, there's he's got some good movies. The Master, uh, some phenomenal acting by Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Timor Hoffman in that movie. Slay.
SPEAKER_03I would say like literally the only other film I've watched from him is La Crush Pizza.
SPEAKER_01Well.
SPEAKER_03And it left worse to taste in my mouth.
SPEAKER_01Very different movies.
SPEAKER_03So I just have been that was my that was my the first movie I'd ever watched from him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I understand why your opinion was a bit soured, but that one is not for everybody. He did not make that movie for anyone other than himself.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know he had made one battle after another until you told me afterwards when we watched it first. That doesn't change my opinion of the like it wasn't like I was like, oh my god, one battle after another when we watched it, and then as we were walking through the car and you were like, by the way, he directed it, that I was like, oh, you know what? Fuck this movie. No. I did not feel that way. No. No.
SPEAKER_01You had your initial reaction was that was a good movie.
SPEAKER_03Kudos.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, good movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was like, if you like Sinners More, and that's fine.
SPEAKER_03I do like Sinners More.
SPEAKER_01And that's fair.
SPEAKER_03Um I I was like, this was my favorite performance from Leo.
SPEAKER_01Um I It was your favorite performance from Leo?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's definitely up there. It's a really good performance from him.
SPEAKER_03Excuse me. Something about watching him just panic.
SPEAKER_01The the scene when he's on the phone and he's trying to remember the password is very funny.
SPEAKER_03I do like it. Or like when um he's he's yelling at his daughter's um friends, and then he's like, Oh, yeah, your pronouns.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh, it's good. I was like, that's good. Their relationship dynamic is great, and like the way it resolves at the end is awesome, and then she's going out and protesting and doing it. Like it's it's it's a really good movie. I'm not sure. It's to rewatch it. I've seen it twice because I watched it with Amanda too. It's a good time.
SPEAKER_03I had a good time.
SPEAKER_01I I didn't just watch it to watch the I uh the IMAX prologue for the Odyssey.
SPEAKER_03Voting against you.
SPEAKER_01That's fair. How'd that turn out for you?
SPEAKER_03Uh oh, listen. I go down with the ship.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's admirable.
SPEAKER_03Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Love that for you.
SPEAKER_03I'm okay with that. I'll take this for you.
SPEAKER_01Well, you quite literally brought this by yourself because I tried, I tried so hard to be like, let's do a different shot.
SPEAKER_03Another shot is boring.
SPEAKER_01We could have done some Carolina Reaper.
SPEAKER_03No, that actually I'd rather do that. That sounds way worse.
SPEAKER_01Because I've done that multiple times.
SPEAKER_03You know what? That can be our annual bet. That like if you don't want to do a if you lose, then you can eat the fucking hot ass pepper.
SPEAKER_01If you're doing the pie, I'm doing the pie.
SPEAKER_03I'm okay with the pie.
SPEAKER_01Well, what if we bet on something other than the Oscars and we assign a different penalty to that?
SPEAKER_03Like, I mean I'm fine with that.
SPEAKER_01We could have done just like a whipped cream pie, but you were like, nah, let's get that fruit.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah. And you text me, you're like, what kind of pie do you want? I've uh we don't have blueberry, and that's okay. So we won't.
SPEAKER_01Probably best for cleanup.
SPEAKER_03Maybe that we are not using blue. That's fine. I was just thinking of Willy Wonka. That's because it was like blue.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Timothy Chalonet would love that.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Timmy.
SPEAKER_01You can totally see Matthew McConaughey, like in that clip.
SPEAKER_03Anyways, um I can't believe that Modern You Supreme didn't go on with anything. Anything.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it wasn't nominated for all the awards, like Sinners in One Battle.
SPEAKER_03Right. It wasn't.
SPEAKER_01But it was nominated for like 75% of them.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, there there it still upheld a lot of nominations.
SPEAKER_01It did. And uh Sinners lost more awards than that. Because it was nominated for more, though.
SPEAKER_03Which is like stupid.
SPEAKER_01I don't, by the way. Why is that a headline? Sinners becomes the most losing movie in Oscar history. Like, why do we have to talk about that? How about the fact that it was nominated for that many awards that it could even get that? That's not a knock.
SPEAKER_03Right. Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I was nominated for so many things.
SPEAKER_01Right. That and it came out in a year with other really good movies, so there was some competition.
SPEAKER_03Like boo fucking who.
SPEAKER_01Are you why is that even a headline? I don't remember where I saw that from, but I did see that headline and I was like.
SPEAKER_03Looking at the next one.
SPEAKER_01Did you see the headline when the movie came out that it was like it made like 60 million domestically in its first weekend, but it's still not profitable because the movies spent 90 million on marketing or whatever? It's like that was a headline that's not the first. No, I know, but like that was a headline that came out the first week the movie was out. Good movie didn't make its money back in the first weekend.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Racism.
SPEAKER_01Listen, I was beating around the bush. You just went straight into the bush.
SPEAKER_03Fuck no, I'm not gonna be that they're assholes.
SPEAKER_01You're probably right.
SPEAKER_03Are you gonna do they're not doing that same headline to one battle after another? But when I see things like that, it look I to me that's like it's a shoot at like cast and director. I would say also crew, but like big shots to directors.
SPEAKER_01Anyways. What was your least favorite moment of the night?
SPEAKER_00By the way, did you hear that Timothy Chalamet left at the ceremony early and arrived back in the room like two minutes before they announced Best Actor? He was tired of being made fun of, then they liked him and Kylie left.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. That was what I heard was reported by somebody that they walked out within the first hour and then came back right before that award was called. Damn. I mean, I actually can't knock him for that. I can't knock him for the water. Did he leave again or did he stay? Most people leave after their award category is up. That's very common, actually.
SPEAKER_03I want to stay till the end.
SPEAKER_01They go every year and it's you know, it's not as glamorous for them, I don't think. But I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I guess, but it's I honestly don't want to watch, I want to see who the very last.
SPEAKER_01I can't be too mad at Timothy for doing that because he was the butt of a lot of jokes. I wouldn't enjoy sitting there and putting a smile on my face.
SPEAKER_03I wouldn't enjoy it either.
SPEAKER_01Like I get it.
SPEAKER_03But I'd have to say, man, you reap what you sow.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and also Leo sits there every year in the world. Every single year so many jokes.
SPEAKER_03And he has to hear about either losing or dating a 25-year-old.
SPEAKER_01Every time. Every time you're gonna do it. Which I thought was hilarious.
SPEAKER_03The mustache thing?
SPEAKER_01No, like Conan just goes, Oh, we need a new meme. We need a new meme, like go. And he was like, which I thought was hilarious. And he clearly was not prepped on that. Like that was clearly like a gag that they did not get him in on on purpose, which I thought was amusing.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, Timothy.
SPEAKER_01All right, least favorite moment of the night. Um what was the most egregious thing for me? I can go first if you want.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_01I didn't like that Sean Penn wasn't there to accept his award. That is I because I thought he was gonna win. I picked him to win, and the dude wasn't there. He's won two Oscars before. This is his third. Good for you. He's a phenomenal actor.
SPEAKER_03Bro, where were you?
SPEAKER_01I I mean, was your wife in labor? Like, I don't know. I didn't I don't know.
SPEAKER_03That's my only thought is that like if you're not coming to a giant award show that you're nominated for, I have to think that some like family emerges.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and if that was the case, you know, never mind. Like, okay, fair enough. I haven't heard what the reason why he wasn't there was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And I mean, it's not our business.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not.
SPEAKER_03But I'm like, oh, that was kind of like it it just kind of sucks to be like, oh, you're not here.
SPEAKER_01Oh, well, you just won. It's one thing to be nominated and they just show your picture, not not your live feed or whatever.
SPEAKER_03But I feel like if you're nominated, show.
SPEAKER_01I agree.
SPEAKER_03And I definitely would even if you don't feel like you have any foot in winning, go.
SPEAKER_01Which he certainly did. He was the odds-on favorite to do it, and he did win. And he won other awards for the performance.
SPEAKER_03Like And why were you not there? Was funny to see Kieran to be like, oh, I didn't want to. I don't know. Never fucking changed. That man is so funny. Kieran Kulkin is so funny.
SPEAKER_01We love the Culkans.
SPEAKER_03Ah, so good. Um Kieran Kulkin's so funny.
SPEAKER_01He's got I've just been his clips of him and ridiculous things he's done have just been all over my feed this last week because of the Oscars and all that. God, he's got some great, great clips.
SPEAKER_03Comedics.
SPEAKER_01Like in interviews and stuff like that of him, just like the most outrageous stuff he says. It's so funny. Anyways, least favorite moment of the night for you. Was it just Sinners not winning Best Picture?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01It was Golden winning for Best Song.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to help you. Is it hard to pick?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you just don't want to say? Okay.
SPEAKER_03It was it was watching Delroy and Way Yung Nina not win.
SPEAKER_00Not win. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That fucking. I want it so much. I know. And that's why I was like, I know. I was like, I don't, I I'll this is for you because I'm gonna go down with you. I I was very emotionally attached to them. And I and a part of me kind of still is because I I think that um it's like it's not like me losing, but like it's it's a part of me that I saw myself in.
SPEAKER_01For sure. Especially as the acting awards. I mean right.
SPEAKER_03So it's just kind of to be like I was Amy Madigan that won.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, right. That's who won. I was about to be like, yeah, but it yeah.
SPEAKER_03I'm I'm happy that horror gets recognition at the office.
SPEAKER_01The amount of awards that horror movies have not been nominated or won that deserved is crazy. There's some great horror films. So I love showing some love to horror.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and like, you know, more than just very creepy in that more than just the one.
SPEAKER_01It was a good performance. I think your issues with that were more about her character motivation and that kind of thing, which is more of a writing complaint than it is her acting.
SPEAKER_03It's not it's not an acting dig to her.
SPEAKER_01Her acting was actually really well done in that she was creepy.
SPEAKER_03When I I I I think a lot about characters and their place in the story.
SPEAKER_05Sure.
SPEAKER_03And how they move it along or straw it back. Right. So it's just like in in my humble opinion, in comparison. It's not it's not good.
SPEAKER_01You're allowed to have these feelings.
SPEAKER_03I can hold a note for really long. I mean actually, that felt really good.
SPEAKER_01That wasn't a G6 at the beginning.
SPEAKER_03Every now and then you just screaming feels really, really good to just Oh, it does.
SPEAKER_01You don't just like randomly scream into pillows all the time?
SPEAKER_03No, but I should more often.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it's great. Talk about a rush of endorphins afterwards, it's great. Yeah. It's kind of like a good cry, you just gotta let it out sometimes, you know?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I I can I can I can let out my cries. I I know when I like, uh, I need to cry, but it that same feeling doesn't always come up for like, oh, I need to scream right now. Screaming is right. And a lot of times I'm like, because I think a lot of times where I'm like, God, I want to scream, but it's not the same as the same urge as oh, I need to cry right now.
SPEAKER_01It's different.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01A lot of times screaming is associated with anger, not sadness, but you know, tears can come with anger and screaming can come with sadness.
SPEAKER_02Amen.
SPEAKER_01You know? Everyone feels things differently. All right, so shall we go through the awards and see who won what and how we feel about it? All right.
SPEAKER_03As if he didn't already text me.
SPEAKER_01Well, we needed to figure out what pie you wanted.
SPEAKER_03And this one's for all of us.
SPEAKER_01International feature, you went with Voice of Hinrejab, and I went with Sentimental Value. Sentimental Value ended up winning that one. Not really surprised on that one. We we kind of expected that.
SPEAKER_03Free Palestine.
SPEAKER_01Free Palestine. No arguments here. Uh documentary short. Um was no, that wasn't the one that did you see the short film was a tie?
SPEAKER_03I did see that, and I was like, how one of them was the one I picked.
SPEAKER_01Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03What? Do you just cut the Oscar in half or yeah, no, just two trophies. Yeah. I learned that um they're technically rentals.
SPEAKER_01The trophies? Yeah. They give them back?
SPEAKER_03No, that like the I guess it it's a rule that they made in 1951 that if it feels too old, let's change it. Let me finish. Um that if someone who won an Oscar wants to sell said Oscar, that they need to first give it, like, sell they give the Academy the opportunity to buy it back for one dollar. Starting price of one dollar.
SPEAKER_01But that means that they're always gonna buy it back.
SPEAKER_03Exactly.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Because you're basically just not allowed to sell it.
SPEAKER_03I don't know who sold their own.
SPEAKER_01Somebody sold an Oscar in the 40s and they were like, never again.
SPEAKER_03Pretty much. Yeah. You're not selling. So technically, they're like, You you get the Oscar, you get to bring it home.
SPEAKER_01I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, but in a way, it's not people then start making money and they go, Well, I need to make money again. I have this trophy. I mean, that doesn't surprise me that that happened. No, well, they probably sold it for a whole lot more than a dollar, and that made them. I know, I know, I know.
SPEAKER_03But if like uh an if an actor now was like, I need to sell my Oscar.
SPEAKER_01That's just never gonna happen. Because the Academy's just gonna buy a bag. But I would never for a dollar. Documentary short. Um, I actually don't.
SPEAKER_03Have they had a tie before like this?
SPEAKER_01I don't remember. Um not that I can recall. All the empty rooms won that, which is what I picked.
SPEAKER_03Slay.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Fair enough. I I did I I crushed you on the uh the guesses.
SPEAKER_03The guesses, and that's fine.
SPEAKER_01But it happens.
SPEAKER_03What did you want from me?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Uh, documentary feature, Mr. Nobody Against Putin. That's what I picked. That one won. You picked Come See Me in the Good Light, I believe.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01That did not win. Sorry. I don't know. We were just guessing. Live action short. Um You picked Friend of Dorothy, I believe it was.
SPEAKER_03I did.
SPEAKER_01And it was uh the singers and two people exchanging saliva that tied.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01And I picked two people exchanging saliva. Uh animated short. Um, you picked the three sisters, and I picked the girl who cried pearls, the girl who cried pearls won. Uh and then animated feature, k-pop demon hunters. We both picked that that one. Uh no surprise there. Uh casting. You and me both picked spinners for that, and one battle after another won that one. Which I'm not that surprised, but both were great casts. I'm like, both you can't really be mad at it. As long as one of those won, I was gonna be happy, honestly.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh cinematography! Let's go, Autumn. Let's go.
SPEAKER_03So good.
SPEAKER_01I loved her speech too.
SPEAKER_03I loved I loved what I'm saying. All the women in the room, please stand up.
SPEAKER_01Like that was so cool. That was cool. I loved it. Amanda watched that. Amanda watched that, and she went to school for cinematography, although she's not working in it now.
SPEAKER_00I was like, I was there.
SPEAKER_01Getting choked up, and she's like, I want to do that. That's so inspiring. I that's I want to be that. That's literally my dream. And I was like, Doors open.
SPEAKER_03Doors open. I wish you knew what it was like to be a woman sometimes.
SPEAKER_01Why do you say that? I feel like we should dig into that one.
SPEAKER_03Because right now, when I'm like, uh, I love being a woman. Like, like, just like moments like that that I'm like, God, that's To have everyone stand up in the room with you be like, This is for us. To have everyone stand up in the room with you and be like, this is for us. This is possible. Don't ever stop. Is it Oh, it's phenomenal. Yes. To be like, I I uh it's like um when Michelle Yo won, and in her speech, she was like, Don't let anybody tell you that you're past your prime. And I could have damn near got that tattooed on my face.
SPEAKER_01That Oscar's was one of my favorite Oscars. That's also because of our love for one bat or for everything every All at Once, and it won so many awards.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_05But that also I mom, I just won an Oscar.
SPEAKER_01So good. I love that speech. He's so wholesome.
SPEAKER_03He's so good.
SPEAKER_01He's so good. He's so good in that movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but like that that Oscar's changed my life.
SPEAKER_01It was so good. We watched that one together.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we did. I cried on your couch for like 20 minutes. We're like, we have to pause. We're like, because I can't gather myself because like their their speeches, they mean so much to me. Or I'm like, it's it's always people's acceptance speeches to be like, it is possible. You can make it. I know that the doubts that you've you've had in your head that you faced in life, and you can still make it here. I'll cry right now.
SPEAKER_01Do it. Don't uh you have to get pied later. You don't want to be teary pie.
SPEAKER_03Ew.
SPEAKER_01Um, it was awesome. We'll still eat it. I wish I could understand what it's like to be a woman too. Yeah, totally.
SPEAKER_03Right. One day.
SPEAKER_01Uh costume design. I think we both went with Frankenstein for that one. And I was like, I was so happy to see that 100%. Film editing. What did you pick? Did you pick singers for that?
SPEAKER_03Or you picked Marty Supreme for the first time. I was like, I want to say I picked Marty. I I picked Marty Supreme because I wanted to pick it for something because I thought that it it still does it deserves its flowers.
SPEAKER_01It's a great movie.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and but it was just like not for it just came out at the wrong.
SPEAKER_01If it came out last year, it would have won like five awards.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh I went with One Dial, that was the winner. Great acceptance speech, by the way. Solid.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Gay man edited that film, which I thought was cool.
SPEAKER_03I love the gay man.
SPEAKER_01He gave a little kiss to his partner. I thought it was great.
SPEAKER_03You point at me because I'm gay.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_03That's funny. I got that right now. I was like, yeah. Yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_01Just wanted you to know, you know, in case you didn't want. I know you didn't watch. So.
SPEAKER_03I wanted. Sorry, I was somewhere.
SPEAKER_01Yep, you were busy. Valid, a valid excuse. I hope Sean Penn had a similar valid excuse. Um makeup and hairstyling. We both picked Frankenstein. Frankenstein wasn't deserve it. I mean Frankenstein, y'all guys. You killed it with the production design. Original score. Ludwig with his third Oscar.
SPEAKER_03See you again next year.
SPEAKER_01Ludwig having three Oscars feels appropriate. Hans Zimmer only having one for Dune and the Lion King feels egregiously terrible.
SPEAKER_03I do feel like Hans Zimmer does deserve more, but I uh at least he gets his own concerts.
SPEAKER_01It's because he's a giant name.
SPEAKER_03What do you want from me? I'm making it better.
SPEAKER_01I know. But John Williams is so much.
SPEAKER_03I would love to go to one of those concerts, though. I heard that they're they are absolutely beautiful. They're at the the Hollywood Bowl, yes.
SPEAKER_01Hans Zimmer's done the Hollywood Bowl, too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um I can't remember if like if that and like the candlelight concerts are are they the same thing? Or are they too much?
SPEAKER_01What do you mean? Because they have like the They do the candlelight concerts, but it's not like the movie concert, a different thing. They're two different things. Classical music.
SPEAKER_02Slay.
SPEAKER_01I've been to a classical music concert at the Hollywood Bowl before.
SPEAKER_02How was it?
SPEAKER_01I fell asleep. But I had the flu.
SPEAKER_02Don't tell Timmy that. I had the flu. Don't tell Timmy that.
SPEAKER_01It was a field trip. It was a 12-hour field trip for my introduction to the arts class freshman year of college. And we went to the Getty in the morning. And then we went to the That sounds really nice. Walk of Fame, I think, for a minute. And then we went to the Hollywood Bowl for a classical music concert. And as the day progressed, I got sicker and sicker and sicker. I woke up feeling okay, and I just got it with me throughout the day as I was on the trip.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And there was nowhere I was on a bus. Like I couldn't. So I just fell asleep during this. It was also beautiful classical music playing all slowly. I'm like, this is lovely to fall asleep too. Are you kidding me? Like, I I like classical music, actually. I really do. I one of my favorite movies of all time is Amadeus about Mozart, and I listen to Mozart all the time randomly, like just in my car. Um, yeah. Original song. You've been dethroned. Let it go.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, baby. You had a good run. It did. I did lose that one.
SPEAKER_01That's okay. Did you not pick it? No. What did you pick? Oh, you picked I, yeah. I I kind of tried to help you.
SPEAKER_03But no, no, no, no. I didn't.
SPEAKER_01And you gave me points on that.
SPEAKER_03And I didn't care.
SPEAKER_01It was minus 4,000.
SPEAKER_03I didn't care.
SPEAKER_01The odds were ever in my favor.
SPEAKER_03And that was fine. Miles performance. That's cool as fuck.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure. Listen, is my favorite moment in cinema last year? I lied to you. Absolutely without a shadow of a doubt.
SPEAKER_03So good. If I could experience that for the first time again.
SPEAKER_01That's a good one.
SPEAKER_03I want to record my reaction so I can hold on to it. Never again. Oh my god. On 70 mil IMAs. IMAX. I've never been to an IMAX movie, and then my first time was one battle after another. And I was like, oh my god, I'm staring into the fucking void. It was insane.
SPEAKER_01And for those of you nerds out there that know, there's 11 70 mil IMAX screens in the US, and we did go to one of those. So it was the full 70 mil 15 perf film IMAX. It was the first time.
SPEAKER_03I felt like I was like on a rock.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean it was and like even just watching the movie with its a close-up of a character's face, you're having to do this and then this to look at their lips and their eyes.
SPEAKER_03Like, you know, like um but yeah, the the the car up and down yen.
SPEAKER_01It's a lot easier to watch on a TV on a much on a smaller device.
SPEAKER_03It's not nearly as I was get I felt like when you know when you go on like Rise of the Resistance at Disney or like one of the like uh I think Mickey's Run away, but I know that other ones at Universal also have the screens. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh the Harry Potter ride has the screens.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, or uh the Simpsons ride where you're just like you're sitting still, but like Yeah. I that also actually so sick yeah. I was I was like, it's a fun ride, but it makes me sick.
SPEAKER_01Oh, this the smugglers run where you're doing the Millennium Falcon, that one also has the moving screen.
SPEAKER_03A little bit more, but at least well it's a little interactive. So like it looks like not when you're like you're just stationary and the screen in front of you is like simulating movement. Right. And so I was like, I had to literally I remember being like close my eyes.
SPEAKER_01I know I'm like all into this car chase, and I like look over at you to be like, is she enjoying this? And you're like not watching. I'm like, are you okay?
SPEAKER_03No, I was breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth.
SPEAKER_01I was like, is she having a panic attack right now? Is she like really into the movie? Like it's just so anxiety, you know? No, it wasn't any of that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I got super motion uh not on the Oscars, but like um for for the Black Widow movie, I got so motion sick, I did throw up in the theater. And I tried, I I I lasted most of the movie. It was at the very end of the movie.
SPEAKER_01What did it about Black Widow? Was there something the camera work went, you know? Was it all handheld shaky?
SPEAKER_03It was just it it was just a lot of I I I guess I don't do toss and turn and and stabilization well. Um that at the end of the movie.
SPEAKER_01So Jason Bourne kind of like crazy shaky cam kind of stuff. I haven't seen it, so I have no idea.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Um I don't do well with shaky cams all that much. Um mostly because I also like I'm trying to like I can't really I don't really know what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_01A lot of times, it's just like make it fast to make it feel exciting.
SPEAKER_03And don't shoot me. Um I I don't exactly know what it's called, but like when like you're focused on this one thing, but the world around them is turning, and then the camera moves with them, and then it kind of maybe those things go opposite. It's a lot of sudden still movement. I don't know how else to describe it. I'll show you later what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, and then you we'll come back. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like I can I can probably tell you, but I'm not getting exactly what you're saying.
SPEAKER_03I'm not describing it well. But like I'll show you and then you'll understand, and then you can tell me the technical term for what that is called. Um there's one out there. I I know that there is. It's just I don't know what it is. I went to theater for stage, okay? Yep. Um, anyways, um last part of Black Widow, I couldn't take it anymore. And I ran out of the theater and I didn't make it to the bathroom. And I threw up in the entryway.
SPEAKER_00Aw, man.
SPEAKER_03And then I watched the rest of the movie hiding behind a wall, and then once the credits started rolling, I ran.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm surprised you made it that far.
SPEAKER_03Me too. Because it was like immediately this movie started with like crazy movement.
SPEAKER_01I guess I'm not gonna see the end of Black Widow.
SPEAKER_03I wanted to watch it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but like throwing up, that's I love Florence Pew. It's over. Yeah, I know you do. Um production design. We both picked Frankenstein and Frankenstein won. Guillermo del Toro, man. You know what to do with the design, man. Sound.
SPEAKER_03F1.
SPEAKER_01F1. Did we both pick F1?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we did.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we did.
SPEAKER_03Meow.
SPEAKER_01Meow. It won. Uh visual effects, we both picked Avatar Fire and Ash.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And it won. Not really all that surprising.
SPEAKER_03Uh I wonder if they go into the Oscars being like, no, I know. I'm gonna win. I mean For this category.
SPEAKER_01I could have seen F1 winning that. I could have seen Sinners winning that, but Avatar has literally won every time. Avatar's w every time about that. All three Avatar movies have won best visual effects. I mean. I expect the fourth and fifth to do the same. When the when you spend when the entire movie is that. And it is genuinely amazing looking that it's not real that what you're looking at.
SPEAKER_03No, it's beautiful.
SPEAKER_01It's beautiful. Like it's insane. So like it is it's deserved. It's some of the best looking CGI you'll ever see. Directing. Yay!
SPEAKER_03I'll watch more of the movies and I'll be kinder.
SPEAKER_01Uh actor in a supporting role. You went with Delroy, I went with Sean Penn, and Mr. Non-acceptance speech got that one. Um actress in a supporting role. You went with Wyoming. I went with Taana Taylor, and Amy Madigan won that one. So we're both wrong.
SPEAKER_03That was out of left field.
SPEAKER_01That was out of left field. I mean, she wasn't.
SPEAKER_03Not in a mean way.
SPEAKER_01She was the betting favorite to win it.
SPEAKER_03Was she?
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Okay. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Pretty much every betting favorite won. The only ones I got wrong were when I had an opinion and strayed from the betting favorite. Almost all of them. Not everyone. Technically, Marty's uh Timothy was betting favorite, but I like this much over Michael B. Jordan. Um we then had writing adapted screenplay. Did you pick one battle for that? Um or did you pick Hamnet? I picked Hamnet. You picked Hamnet. One battle won that. Uh and then writing original screenplay, we both picked Sinners, and that was the winner there. Big W. Actor in a leading role. I picked him at the Chalomeda win just narrowly, and you picked Maggie B. Jordan, and we already know what happened there. In N Out King.
SPEAKER_03Iconic. I'm also like, they had like I I I I I know that he planned to go to In N Out afterwards.
SPEAKER_01Photographer's gonna be a little bit more.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was like, I saw the giant light, and I was like that's just a sponsored photo shoot, like when they're like, I'm gonna go to Disneyland after.
SPEAKER_01That's the Super Bowl winner, usually.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that's what I'm saying. Like, is it like the same thing that In N Out was like, hey, if you win, will you come to this location and we'll have a setup for you?
SPEAKER_01Uh maybe.
SPEAKER_03Everybody gets free.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. But it is a kind of a tradition of like Oscar winners to go to In N Out, but not every time, but like that's that was fun. That was a those area.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I win. I'd go to the party and then be like, yeah, fuck it. In N Out still open. Hell yeah. Oh, sounds so good.
SPEAKER_01Uh actress in a leading role. Um, I can't remember who you picked for this.
SPEAKER_03Hamnet.
SPEAKER_01You did pick Hamnet. I did too. Jesse Buckley, you deserved winner of that one. Big W on that. And then we obviously had best picture. Which one to one battle after another. And you and me both pick centers to win that one. Just a dish much. Which brings our total. You scored 13 correct out of 24 categories, and I scored 19 correct out of 24 categories.
SPEAKER_03Which means I would do it again.
SPEAKER_01Which means Bella should check the betting odds favorites more often before making bets.
SPEAKER_03Now I'm good.
SPEAKER_01Oh, we do okay. Is there anything else we'd like to say before excepting our fate?
SPEAKER_03Let me hold this for now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that's fine. Um eat the uh baked on bananas.
SPEAKER_03Not smashing this into my forehead. That's fair. But I'll smash the rest of it. Or do you want to do it? I'm okay with either answer.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Um it feels uh weird, but I'll take the headphones off. Yeah, definitely that.
SPEAKER_03But what do you want to see at the Oscars?
SPEAKER_01Meaning like changes or anything.
SPEAKER_03When you want to see more of something, you want to see less of something.
SPEAKER_01I just want to see the films that deserve to be there, to be there, and the ones that deserve to win to win. Can it be a lot less political in that it's just like lobbied campaigns to academy voters to try and get wins, which has been happening for basically our whole lives. Thanks, Harvey Wenstein. Um I just like sometimes deserved winners win, and it's great.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_01Uh everything everywhere all at once, a great example there. 100% deserved all of its flowers, and I can't. I'm not saying the winners this year didn't deserve to win.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like everybody deserved to be there. It was just like it just And it's not like it's not like the first time we've felt this about it.
SPEAKER_03It's hard to say. I I think right now, maybe, and maybe I'll uh I uh maybe I'm speaking for the both of us, but please like you know, step in me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah to be like Interrupt, yeah.
SPEAKER_03What am I having a throat?
SPEAKER_01Step in me is an interesting sentence.
SPEAKER_03New one. That's new.
SPEAKER_01That's a new phrase.
SPEAKER_03Um I don't wanna I don't wanna put words in your mouth though, to be like that's not how you feel. Um but I think it's hard to be like this is what I feel and think, but also I don't discredit people's work and their heart and their 100%. Yeah, their their effort and like where their background and they come from and like there's so many components to them.
SPEAKER_01And they've actually made it there. Like how awesome that is.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_01Awesome.
SPEAKER_03One day.
SPEAKER_01One day. Every single time I watch the Oscars, I'm like, one day.
SPEAKER_03One day.
SPEAKER_01Please, hopefully. We'll see. That's the dream. Soon. That's the dream. Um but yeah.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I just it's hard to be like, I really believe this, and I believe this for this reason. Not to say that these people don't and that they don't feel that way, or that they don't deserve these things. They do.
SPEAKER_01It's just everybody deserves their flowers.
SPEAKER_03This is how I feel, and I'm trying really hard not to like discredit other people.
SPEAKER_01This is our Super Bowl as movie fans, though.
SPEAKER_03And it's so much more complicated than the actual Super Bowl.
SPEAKER_01It's crazy. It's just I'm sad that more often than not with the Oscars, I'm left wanting more and feeling like I didn't get everything I wanted out of it. Almost like on an annual basis in one way or another.
SPEAKER_03I want more categories, actually.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And we're getting-I mean, casting this year's great. I love that we're adding stunts.
SPEAKER_03I thought, yeah, I was like, I thought we were adding stunts this year. Next year? So I'll see Tom Cruise next year.
SPEAKER_01Probably.
SPEAKER_03I not to be a bitch, but I'm like, what if he lost the first year that they have this award? Do you think they'll just retroactively give him one and be like, for the should have a lifetime achievement stunt award.
SPEAKER_01Like, not even joking, not even like he should have an Oscar for his performances.
SPEAKER_03Something like that.
SPEAKER_01The man is incredible. I don't in terms of his physical ability, like dude hung off a plane, climbed the tallest building in the world, learned how to fly fighter jets. I mean, the guy's crazy, and he's in his 60s.
SPEAKER_03Incredible. Damn. And his 60s. Um, what I was gonna say is I don't know how this would go. And you know, maybe they work for multiple productions. I want a favorite PA Oscar.
SPEAKER_01I love that. Give give give me the best gaffer, give best boy awards. Yes! Give me assistant editor awards. Who synced up that footage best?
unknownI'm kidding.
SPEAKER_01Not really. Oh you know who needs some you know you know who needs some shout-outs? The first ACs. You guys keep everything in focus and you guys have to be perfect every single time. An actor can mess up a line, and we all just go, oh, let's do it again. You mess up focus. And you're there like everybody yells at you immediately. You could get fired for messing up focus, even though in today's day and age we shoot large format at like T1.8, and I know I'm going really nerdy with you. Stupid wide open focus pullers, y'all have a really hard job, especially on IMAX film, because of this format size and the way that they shoot really shallow. It's really, really hard to do what they do. And it's impressive. So W to the first ACs out there. We see you, we love you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But you know what I mean? Like, I think that those are like more more awards need to be handed out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, more awards. Uh 100%. Uh, I need more live musical performances. That's fine with me. Yeah. I need the nominees to be in attendance, or else they're not getting their award if they're not there to accept it.
SPEAKER_03You give it to like the next person.
SPEAKER_01Yes. I need preferential ballots to not be a thing on Best Picture. Why is that the only award we do that for? Because it's why are there 10 nominees for it?
SPEAKER_03To be like, hey, here it's like when you like vote like the presidential votes, it would be like, here's the popular vote, here's what won.
SPEAKER_01Right. Every other award is whichever one gets the most first place votes. But that one is a vote by preferential ballot. And it's not whichever one has the most first place votes. Why? Why are we changing it up just for that one?
SPEAKER_00Why are there notes too many? There's a lot. So many.
SPEAKER_01Anyways. We love the Oscars, we love movies, and it's all we have. So it's like we just want to see this thing that we all love and care about represented better.
SPEAKER_03Like a four-hour Oscar.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it is kind of already four hours.
SPEAKER_03In a way.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think there's only one thing left to do on this one.
SPEAKER_03So we came here for. I'm kind of excited.
SPEAKER_01You're kind of excited. Am I gonna push this into your face or are you gonna put your face into it? Or I'm not gonna like throw it at your face obviously. In office space.
SPEAKER_03And it's his office space, not mine. And we don't have any tarps down. We had a lot going on as per usual.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But um, you know, I will give you the honors.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_03I don't want to put my phone up. I know that there's literally three cameras. I'm gonna need this later. Uh am I gonna push this into your face?
SPEAKER_01I don't even know.
SPEAKER_03You know what? I leave that to you.
SPEAKER_01Or should I just push your head into the pie?
SPEAKER_03I leave that to you.
SPEAKER_01It feels like it'll make less of a mess. Should I grab napkins or are we just gonna do that?
SPEAKER_03I'm literally just gonna have my eyes closed and you do whatever the spot has. Alright.
SPEAKER_01Cheers. And to next year.
SPEAKER_05That is so much deeper than I thought it was.
SPEAKER_01We'll see you next week.
SPEAKER_03Oh my gosh!
SPEAKER_01All right, that concludes the podcast.
SPEAKER_03That's a wrap.
SPEAKER_01Tasty.
SPEAKER_03Oh my gosh!
