Joy sounds great… until life gets hard.
In this episode of Bible, Basically, we wrestle with a question a lot of people quietly carry: How are you supposed to have joy when life genuinely hurts? Because stress, disappointment, anxiety, exhaustion, and pain have a way of making joy feel distant… or even fake.
Walking through Scripture, we explore the difference between happiness and biblical joy, why Paul could write about rejoicing from a prison cell, and how sorrow and joy can exist at the same time. This isn’t about pretending everything is okay. It’s about discovering a kind of hope that survives even when life isn’t.
Because maybe joy isn’t found in perfect circumstances… maybe it’s found in knowing God is still good in the middle of imperfect ones.
Bible, Basically — figuring out faith, together.
Welcome back to Bible basically, where we are figuring out faith together. I know this episode might come as a little not a surprise, but I didn't post any teaser verses or or highlight the the next topic for the episode. It's been a little bit of a challenge for time. We had some recent events at home that needed more attention than the podcast. And for those of you guys who know, you understand what's going on. And look, everybody's fine. You know, it's just just some things in the house needed a little bit more attention than this. They took priority. So if you are listening, I hope that you you get something out of it as usual. Um, I've had quite a few people come up to me and and say that they appreciate the podcast. I can't tell you how much that means to me. You know, I I do this not for me, but I I I want you guys to benefit from this. I want you guys to develop your relationship with God. I want you guys to really grow closer to Him. And I'll say it again, I've said it in other episodes. If I'm your only source of of you know biblical exploration, please please don't do that. Please don't do that. Go to church, read the word, you know, get fed as many different ways as you can. You know, don't rely on me for your weekly dose of of Bible reading. I I am happy to do it with you, and I love it. And it brings me happiness and and and hey, talking about talking about God's word and talking about God and and and and the way Jesus has impacted me and hopefully can impact you, it it makes me smile, and that's why I do it. And and and I hope you guys enjoy it. And today, you know, talking about happiness and and and things that bring us joy, that's what we're gonna talk about. We're gonna talk about joy today. We're gonna talk about where does joy come from? Truly. Where does joy come from? And I know I understand for a lot of you, uh, and sometimes for me, uh, depending on the the week, joy feels impossible. Not because you don't want it, but because life keeps happening. Bad news, loss, exhaustion. And after a while, joy starts to feel like something that you know what I can't have that. That's meant for other people. And someone always will they'll just look at you and go, you know what? It's okay. Just choose joy. Just choose joy. And it can sound fake. Like it's forced, like you're completely disconnected from reality. But what do you do when life genuinely hurts? What do you do when things aren't okay? The Bible talks about joy constantly, but not from places of comfort. Some of the strongest verses about joy were written by people that were in their grief.
SPEAKER_00They were currently struggling. They were in prison, they were suffering.
SPEAKER_01And they still talked about the importance of joy, and that means that biblical joy has to be something deeper than happiness. Because happiness changes with circumstances, but biblical joy, real joy, joy survives those circumstances. Today we're going to look a lot at Philippians, specifically Philippians four. In verse four of Philippians four, it says, Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say, rejoice. There's one word in there that just changes that whole statement, and it's always rejoice in the Lord always. And that sounds impossible at first. Always?
SPEAKER_00Really? Even now? Even when I'm hurting, even when I feel alone, even when I feel broken.
SPEAKER_01But notice that Paul doesn't say rejoice in circumstances, rejoice in comfort, rejoice in ease. No, he says rejoice in the Lord.
SPEAKER_00Joyce tied to something deeper than what's happening around you. It's tied to something deeper than what's happening around you.
SPEAKER_01You know, I've talked a little bit about my life on a couple different episodes and and things that I've been going through. I haven't given a ton of detail, and and you know, maybe someday I will, I'm not sure. Um, but I will say I have a lot of health struggles. And I've said this in the past, and I'll I'll talk about it to whoever wants to talk about it with me one-on-one. I brought those circumstances on myself. I didn't take care of myself for a very, very long time. And because of that, now I'm paying for it with things that I'm going through. But that the fact that I caused it doesn't mean that it doesn't stink. You know, you get news after news after news of things that aren't going right and health concerns that pop up, and things that you need done, and procedures that you have to have. And it's easy to get bogged down and say, well, what you know, especially the woe is me, I'm I'm this, I'm that, and you can't do that. You have to open your eyes and and lift them up and rejoice in the Lord and say, you know, in spite of that, I'm still here. In spite of that, thank you, God. So it doesn't matter what situations you're going through in your life, you still have to rejoice in the Lord and the grace that he's given us. Paul is a great example of that. You know, Paul Paul wrote to the Philippians, and and when he wrote to the Philippians, he was writing from prison. Which, if you really think about it, and he's sitting here talking about joy, that completely changes the weight of his words. Philippians 4 verses 11 through 13. And yep, you heard me right, Philippians 4, 13. We're gonna touch on it another one of the most misquoted verses in the Bible. We love to twist that verse and change the meaning. But if you listen to 11 through 13, you'll understand the weight of what he was talking about with that last verse. In verse 11, he starts, not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low. I know how to abound. In every and any circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
SPEAKER_00He's not just saying I can do all things. I can run a marathon because of Christ.
SPEAKER_01I can do a Super Bowl, win the Super Bowl because of Christ. He's saying that my hope, my joy, that endures not because of me, but because of him who dwells within me.
SPEAKER_00I know what it's like to have.
SPEAKER_01I know what it's like not to have. And the reason I'm still rejoicing is because of God. It's because of Christ. It's because of He who provides that strength in me, not my own strength. Guys, this isn't motivational poster Christianity. This is someone saying, I've suffered, and I still found something steady.
SPEAKER_00Guys, joy and pain can exist together.
SPEAKER_01This is one of the most important parts of what we're going to talk about because people assume if I'm hurting, I must not have joy.
SPEAKER_00Because they can't coexist. But the scripture never says that. From 2 Corinthians 6.
SPEAKER_012 Corinthians 6, verse 10, it says, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing, yet possesses possessing everything. That verse is incredible.
SPEAKER_00Sorrowful, yet rejoicing. Both exist at the same time.
SPEAKER_01Joy is not pretending that pain isn't real.
SPEAKER_00Joy comes from perspective.
SPEAKER_01Romans 8, 18 says, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
SPEAKER_00Hear that again.
SPEAKER_01Think about what's going on in the world today, for I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed to us. Paul isn't minimizing suffering, he's comparing it to something bigger. He's saying, Yeah, this stinks right now. But think about the future. Think about what is promised to us. Think about the glory that's going to be revealed to us later. What we're going through now. That's that's inconsequential. When we have what is promised to us waiting for us.
SPEAKER_00Joy grows when your perspective changes.
SPEAKER_01As Christians, our lives aren't going to be easy. This is not a one-way ticket to paradise on Easy Street, right? You're going to get beat up, you're going to get pushed down. You're going to go through trials. In James 1, verse 2 and 3, it says, Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. Take those trials, take that challenge that you're facing, take that moment of suffering, and reinforce the glory of God in your life.
SPEAKER_00Trials aren't meaningless. Joy changes how you endure them. So what does joy actually look like?
SPEAKER_01You think of joy, and it's like I said, you go real shallow, right? And you're like, oh, sunshine and rainbows and unicorns. Joy's not constantly smiling and fake positivity and pretending everything is hunky dory. Joy, true joy, biblical joy looks like gratitude in chaos. Peace in uncertainty. And trust even when the answers haven't come yet.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes joy looks quiet. Sometimes it looks like I'm just not giving up.
SPEAKER_01I get asked a lot, how do you have hope? When we go through trouble, when when when there were moments when we didn't know if the next paycheck was going to be able to cover what we needed and whether or not we were going to be able to get groceries, or or what when we went through those moments, someone they would look at me and they would go, How how are you so calm? How do you how how are you so peaceful? You don't know what's going to happen. No, I don't know what's going to happen, but I know my God's not going to abandon me. I know my God's going to take care of me. I'm not giving up. And look, that's not, look, I am no superhero. I'm not that's not a superpower. I am human. This was not every single time, but there were moments when I knew in my heart that that that that faith welled up within me, and I said, you know what? He's got this. We're going through it right now, but he's got it. He'll pull us out through the other side. He always does. And then there were other nights when I would spend in tears. Okay. This is not, this is not easy. This is not an emotion or a feeling that you just magically get whenever you accept Christ into your heart. We're still human. We still worry. But once again, joy comes from not making that pain, not making that worry, not making it final.
SPEAKER_00Maybe joy isn't what we thought it was. Maybe it's not the absence of pain. But maybe it's the refusal to let that pain become your identity. Maybe joy is what happens when hope survives the storm.
SPEAKER_01When you've cried, when you've wept, but you still trust God. When life hurts and you feel broken and exhausted, but you still keep going. When things aren't fixed, but your faith isn't gone. Not because everything is good, but because God is.
SPEAKER_00And maybe that's where real joy comes from. Not perfect circumstances, but from a steady hope that survives the imperfect ones. God bless you guys. I hope you take this week and I hope you find some joy.
SPEAKER_01I hope that you experience that inexplicable peace that God provides. I look forward to chatting with you again next week. Guys, this has been Bible basically. Or as usual, we are figuring out faiths together.
