Okay, Grover Welcome to Listen Light Fans for the Love of D NX. I'm B, and each week I'll be joined by different co-hosts as we dive into the songs, the stories, and the moments that made us fall in love with this most iconic band on the planet. Let's go. Welcome back, everybody, for the uh season two finale, and I'm joined by Danielle, my wing girl. How are you, Danielle? Well, hello, my beautiful bee.
SPEAKER_08It's been a very long time since I've seen your beautiful face, but I'm excited to be here with you today for season two finale.
SPEAKER_00Season two finale. I can't believe it. Well, when it's been going since February. So um, yeah, we've packed a lot in. And so today we're going to just reminisce about a few things and um we're going to do a little bit of um tidying up and making sure that everyone's okay and on board with all the things that's coming our way and all sorts of things, aren't we? Um, and also what a great big weekend we've just had, too. So we're just gonna go through quite a lot. So I just want to introduce um the fact that um Danielle has been my uh wing girl for wow, what, six or seven years now in the in the background, in the studio. Um you've you've been on uh I think it was episode two with Andrew Lamby. And uh yeah, this is your second time back. I oh no, we talked about the um induction you were um in uh America helping me out with that as well, weren't you?
SPEAKER_08Yep, I think this may be my third time on uh listen like fans.
SPEAKER_00Now, um before we carry on, um you can see Michael in the background there if you're watching the video. And for some reason, I can't take off auto um zoom. And so if if I move and and you see Michael, it's not a bad thing, I think, but you might see me wave my hands a little bit just to to to get back. So we'll we'll just say that Michael's taking over and he wants to be on screen. And we've had a good laugh of it about it off the hair, haven't we?
SPEAKER_08Yes, and we all know the story about Michael showing up when it's raining or bad weather. And guess what's happening outside my window right now? The trees are blowing, the rain's going, the thunder's happening. So Michael wants to be a part of our finale, so I think we'll yes, we well, we want you to be, Michael, so don't you worry.
SPEAKER_00You're splashed everywhere in the background in my in my uh studio, and uh you've got some amazing um photos and video um photos and uh posters on your wall, which has been your latest edition there.
SPEAKER_08Um actually, I have not got my kick door poster up yet, but Mr. Lamby helped me acquire that one. It's one that I had when I was a teenager that uh unfortunately got um damaged in the houseblood that we had. So I have curred that one and it should be going up on my door soon.
SPEAKER_00Excellent. And then you've got a little mini Michael over there on your shoulder.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, mini Michael from the uh podcast party in Sydney.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we're all still talking about that, aren't we? The party. And uh yeah, he he managed to um get into your suitcase and come home with you. That was right.
SPEAKER_08Oh, oh, he's wanting to come back in.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah, you know, I I any little flinch and I'm out is like right in there. Um, so yeah, well, let's let's have a have a think now, reflecting back on what we've done for this season. I know we never we never got to talk about last season, but this season, what um what do you feel that's been a standout for you personally?
SPEAKER_08Um just the guests that you've you've acquired this year, um, just kind of an eclectic mix of of people this year. Anything from a massage therapist to a to a drum tech, um to a former um you know rock star in excess um alum and to two of the the sweetest, coolest guys I've ever met, uh Paul and Glenn. Uh so yeah, I think I think this season's been been great. And you know, it's the the podcast is living up to its name. Listen like fans. I think the fans are really enjoying what they're hearing that you're putting out, B. So thank you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so thank you guys for all your support. It's been fact fantastic. So I really want to thank the listeners and and those that have continued from the the other podcast in XS Access All Areas that's still going, so you can always dig back and and listen to the interviews with the band members. And um, Richard Lowenstein was an awesome guest as well, wasn't he? And Anne, Mickey Gunn, you know. Um, so there's some absolutely fantastic material there to go back and listen to. But this is about fan stories and fresh um interviews. Um, I'm I know I've been talking about this a long time, but she is now ready. JD from the listen, um, sorry, listen, from the elegantly wasted um tour. She was with the band for a good eight months touring with them. She was only a young 26-year-old, I think, at the time. And uh I want to just say she never slept with Michael. She just wants to make sure that everybody knows that she did not sleep with Michael or any of the band. Um, she was a good girl, and um, but she um probably slept in the same bed and had, you know, some lovely conversation. And uh, so so um we do get um some really good stories from her. She uh wow, she um can talk for England, bless her, and she will be the first to put a hand up about that. So when that episode comes out, we will have a lot to talk about. So yeah, can't wait for get to get JD on in season three. Um, also in season three, we've got um who else we've got we've got um Mr. Tully, um Gus Tully, who was in Max Q. He's eager to come on. Yeah, yeah, excellent. So that'll be really cool because that will be um coming out again back onto iTunes and hopefully a vinyl. So we'll let we'll learn a lot more um inside information there. So we've got a few very special guests coming on, and not I'm gonna try and keep quiet about the rest of them, but uh yes, well, how good is that?
SPEAKER_08I'm excited to hear JD's story and good for her for setting the record straight because a lot of people can twist and turn and make things up. So it's good to, as we say, get it from the horse's mouth.
SPEAKER_00Yes, absolutely. Um, going back to the patrons, um, those that support this show. Um, again, I can't thank you enough. It's been um amazing because um the bills are quite high and um it's all covered now. So thank you so much. Um, I mean, uh extra money would be good because there's always technical stuff. I mean, we need this, need that, because you move things around like you need a bigger screen, therefore you need a new webcam, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, it's all good. Um, I'm on top of it. But um, we have been sending emails out to you because we needed more information. So we'd love you to be part of our chat group. So we need to find you on Facebook. Um, there's going to be more things happening. We're going to be running competitions soon because now we have more of you. Um, I think we've up to about 30, 35 um patrons now. So that's really good. Thank you so much, guys. Thank you, everybody. Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Get in touch with us. It works.
SPEAKER_00Yes, thank you.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, yeah. I was gonna say, get in touch with us. Um, I was with somebody the other day and they've been a patron, and they're like, Oh, I didn't know there was a chat. I was like, Oh no, you have to be in the chat, you know, you're you're you're a paying patron. That that's what this is all about. So I added a real quick like to the chat. So yeah, reach out to us. If if you're not in our chat, you're uh paying, you know, to listen and all that. Please reach out to us. We we want you here. So and we appreciate you here.
SPEAKER_00We'd really do. We really do. There's lots of people in the chat, and there's always something special that we're always sharing. Um, so give a shout out to Sheila, um, who you're talking about. Um, Sheila was also um a really good um patron for in excess access all areas, and now she's come um over as well to the listen like fans. Um she um made some flyers, bless her. And you and her went to see the new sensation boys um when they visited um Florida State. So yeah, tell us how that how that went.
SPEAKER_08Oh my goodness, you guys. I'm still sore from dancing. It's taken me a couple of days to recover, and it's not from alcohol. It's just for pure enjoyment. They were they were really amazing. Um, I have not seen uh, well, let me scratch that. I did get to see Blair and you know the acoustic set from the podcast party last year, but prior to that, I have not seen a tribute band since 2017, which was Kick the NXS experience. So New Sensation, the NXS Tribute is out of Atlanta, Georgia. Um, I've been following them for a while, they've been following us for a while, and when I saw they were coming to my local area, now it was still about an hour away from me, but that's nothing to drive to go see. Um super nice guys, super accommodating. They were so excited to have our podcast there. Um, of course, your girl was down front, and she was jumping and wailing and singing and screaming, and those poor ladies to my left, I'm sure they were looking at me like I was insane. But these were this is my band, this is my music, and I don't care.
SPEAKER_00And was there a lot of people wearing in excess t-shirts there?
SPEAKER_08Yeah, it was there was a few of them. There was a few of us that were were representing. Um, I think there's some people had seen uh New Sensation prior because they were wearing some New Sensation shirts. So that was nice to see that they had a little bit of a following. Um, but uh yeah, it was it was a decent crowd. I I think there was at least 200 people there at first. You know, when things first start up, it's like, oh, people are you know just walking in. But I by the end, and um I we've put some videos up and everything, but probably I I may have to answer this early. I think the coolest thing that I saw was I turned around and um forgive me, his name slips my name, but the guy in the role of Kirk was literally in the middle of the crowd and started the sat solo for Tosa Parked. Excellent. And then bubbles started floating from the sky. It was so cool, you guys. It was such a neat moment. Um, so that was a really, really neat experience. But um, we'll say, if you if you have curly hair, that foam does not do anything for your bangs or the curls. Like let's just hit it that way. So you you actually went backstage and you did an interview with them as well, didn't you? Yes, I did. Um, I actually got there a little prior to, um, as I have told you a couple of days ago. I felt like beat and going up and talking, and I was interviewing, and I got to go backstage, and I was like, oh my gosh, I'm a cool rock chick. But no, they were super sweet. Um we talked about podcast party. Um, I got to know their stories. Um, and then we uh went up on stage and they sat on the on the drum risers and we did about a 30-minute interview, and then they got dressed. And before the show started, they allowed me to come back again and grab some pictures with them. Uh, they gave me their set list so I can run down their what they played, and the drummer gave me a drumstick. Super, super nice guys. And if they come anywhere to your neighborhood, please go support them. They love in excess, they they that's why they do this, um, to continue to hear the music being played. So it's nothing but love, and they're really good. And um, the lead singer is you know, pretty darn cute, and um, he does take his shirt off, girls.
SPEAKER_00It's nice to see a young guy up there and doing the thing as well. I I heard it was his birthday as well that weekend.
SPEAKER_08It was, and um what what's his name? His name is Dean. I know his last name, uh, it starts with a K, so I just call him Dean K because I can't pronounce his last name. Um, but yes, it was his birthday on the 14th. So it was actually his birthday, the day of the performance. And his girlfriend, who's British, uh, they it was it gave 1991 Rock and Rio, Michael being presented on stage with a birthday cake. That's exactly the vibe it gave. It was so except she got her clothes on. Yes, she had her clothes on. Um, but uh yeah, we all sang happy birthday to him, and at the end they took a group picture and all of us sang happy birthday to him again. He turned around, and you can literally see like his eyes were like this. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's awesome. Oh, fantastic. Then Sheila, also Sheila had seen them before, is that right?
SPEAKER_08Yes, Sheila had seen them a couple of times up in Birmingham, Alabama. Um, like I said, these guys are out of Atlanta. So Atlanta and Birmingham, if you you know, they're kind of parallel, they're only about an hour and a half, maybe two apart. So um, that kind of area, you get to see a little bit more shows in that area as opposed to where I live. Um, but you guys, their their set was amazing. They had a little bit of everything. And uh there was one gentleman in particular who may have had a little bit too much of drink. Uh, he um he kept deep dive, deep dive, and red lights. So, you know, they um they did pull out like kiss the dirt, uh stuff like that. Um, but they did a little something different. They um they did a a version of disappear and then they led into beds are burning from Midnight Oil, which was really neat. And they also just finished a um Duran in excess tribute show a couple of months ago. So at the end of Suicide Blonde, they ran right into Rio. So that was another interesting uh, yeah. That was that was very cool. So what else did they do? They did, well, they started with um Guns in the Sky, the one thing Heaven Sent, New Sensation, Mystify, Shine Like It Does. That's not one you hear done very often. Um, they did Original Send, they did This Time, another one that you don't really hear um much. They did Elegantly Wasted, Listen Like Thieves. Dean did an amazing rendition of Pretty Vegas. Oh, him and JD very, very on par with each other. Um, I need you tonight. I sent a message, beautiful girl, which Tony um got up. I don't know if you guys have seen. Um, if you go to their page, New Sensation, you'll see Tony with Helena Christensen. He ran into her at the airport in Florida and he told that story. So that was a sweet story I have on video as well. They did by my side, Devil Inside. What you need, don't change, never tears apart, and kiss the dirt. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_00It was a great show. Really, really good. Now, Tony is the Timmy out of the band. Yes. Yes. Yeah, and uh the guy that does all their social media. So there are two new sensations out there. There is another one in Argentina um that that that looks spectacular, and I'm sure they've got a massive following out there. Well, well, 200 people in a quite a small venue, but it sounds like you all had a bloody good time. And it was also celebrating um in XS Day as well, really, wasn't it? Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_08So I think you guys had your your tributes going on in Australia, and we had some going on here. So it was just the culmination of a perfect weekend for celebrations. It was it was my husband's birthday, it was Dean's birthday, and it's in it's Timmy's birthday, it's in XS Day. So it was a great, great weekend.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Let's say on air, air to Tim, happy birthday. Now 69. Um, a good number, I suppose. Anyway, so 70 next year. Bloody hell, these boys are getting a little bit um wiser. So are we. Hopefully, we can um say happy birthday in person to Timmy on his 70th when we have our party, but we'll talk about that more later. Um, and while um is is is there anything else you wanted to say about the new sensation boys before I go on to the next bit?
SPEAKER_08Like I said, guys, if you see them um advertise in your area, please go support. Uh and it's like I told my husband, I said, just to hear live NXS music again. That's you know, you guys we we know there's probably not going to be another tour. I mean, we can be hopes up against hopes, but um if this is the only way to see NXS music live again, go support.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think some something you told me as well is that um and it's probably in the interview that you did that they found they find that in excessive music isn't easy to play, is it? Yes, yes. They talk about that in the interview.
SPEAKER_08Um, yeah, they were talking about how absolutely hard in XS music is to cover and play. Uh, the key changes, the chords, Michael's voice, the the connotations, annotations to Michael. Uh so they were saying it's it's not something that they take lightly, that they've had to study and that they, you know, it endoubtedly they do something wrong in the middle of the set because such it's such hard stuff to cover, but I couldn't tell. So they did a great job. Yeah, Dean, uh the lead singer that plays Michael Hedgehogs, he did say the hardest song for him to cover of Michaels is New Sensation.
SPEAKER_00Oh, really? Yes. And why is that what is just because it just got the uh he'll he says that in the interview.
SPEAKER_08I can't remember off the top of my head, but uh I just remembered that was the song that he said was the hardest for him to cover was New Sensation.
SPEAKER_00Cool. All right, well, the interview will be played at the end of the show. So um, yeah, listen into the end of this show and we'll play that. Uh I think it goes for about 30 minutes, something like that. 30 minutes, yeah. Yeah, so a little bit of a taste there for everybody. Oh, cool. Um, so while that was happening, um, Blair and the Don't Change Boys were in Adelaide, and it was one of their biggest crowds and a spectacular venue. It was an amazing chandelier. Um, and the footage um and the um photographs I've seen are amazing. Yeah, over a thousand well over a thousand fans went to see them. Yes. Wow, yeah. And I spoke to him I've I spoke to him before, I spoke to him during, and I face for him afterwards, and I've got to be in the day after. Um, so yeah, he says that is probably now his number one show. Um, and yeah, I've never been to his number one show, so I probably need to get to Adelaide and uh be there next time because I don't want to miss.
SPEAKER_08What do you mean his number one show?
SPEAKER_07The podcast party wasn't his number one show and they're gonna be standouts now.
SPEAKER_00Talking about party, if you do want to be on board, um we are um going to do something global. So um Danielle is going to um get a party going in Atlanta, is that correct? Yes. Um, and New Sensation have said yes, they'd like to coincide with that. So that's in the making at the moment. We are getting everyone to register. So if you're in the States, um, that's where it's going to be. Unless you have got um you've got something and you can do something, then please get in touch and we can coincide all these parties together. How good would that be all around the world? We've got Juliet in England. Um, she will also be organizing something for the in XS weekend um for their 50th next year. And of course, I'll be organizing something and already have. Um, in fact, the party um we're going to have the same place where you came to. Um, fine. Where the secret venue. Uh and um yeah, and it's um already well, it's well over half sold out. I think I've only got about 18 minutes left. Yes, so it's only Going to be for Patreon. So again, if you want to be part of that, you need to get in touch and register, uh, register, register, and then um, I can even put you on a waiting list and whatever that might be.
SPEAKER_08So, yeah, well, things are in the making, guys.
SPEAKER_00And it's gonna be so cool. It's going to be a whole weekend in Australia. I'm not sure what the other guys are doing yet, but how good if you're in Argentina and you want to coincide this with us, or you already have something going and you just want to let us know, and we can let you, the fans that listen, um, like like thieves, like fans, um, let let them, you know, let us know. Let us know where you are, what you're doing. Maybe this um somebody in Portugal, hello Pedro, um, or or Carrie Ann, hello, uh, over in um, you know, and in uh uh Amsterdam. Uh there's there's loads of you all around the world, and we would live and Canada. There'd be one happy Canada. Maybe JD might be part of that. Who knows?
SPEAKER_08Who knows? Who knows? And you know, out on the West Coast, if you can't get over here to the East Coast, have your own party, you know. Um, but you know, we we'd love for all the you know the country to get together and and you know, all of us that have said, oh, one day we'll meet, one day we'll meet. Well, maybe that time is next year. Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00Now, aside from us working on this podcast and organizing parties and everything, we also do quite a lot of social media. We're quite busy. We do have we have we have day jobs as well, by the way.
SPEAKER_07Yes, we do folks.
SPEAKER_00And you have fur babies and I have big babies. Um, so um, but yeah, we we we like they always say, you know, give a busy person a job and they'll get on with it. And we do. Um, we need to thank our gorgeous Andrew Lambee over in um I want to say Scotland, really, don't we? We're in the UK. Um, he he keeps the fires burning with all these um different um deep dive posts. Amazing, really, what he comes up with. We've we found something really quite special that will come in at coming out this week. So um keep your ears open for that. But you've been running a little um oh what would you say, a battle of the albums. Tell us more about that.
SPEAKER_08Blown away, guys. Thank you so much for all the interaction that you have been doing. I know this has been a hard challenge. Um, there have been some nail biters, but yes, uh coming into the week of NXS Turning 49, I thought, you know, we all have our favorite NXS album. Um, and then we we, you know, you have the media or journalists that, you know, put out, oh, which is the best album. So I thought, you know, why don't we take it to the actual NXS fans that actually buy these things and listen to them on a daily basis? So that's what I started. So I've started this album challenge, and we have gone through all 12 studio albums at this point. So we are into the head-to-head uh matchups at the moment. Um, there were some surprises along the way. Um, and then there were some that I knew would probably go the way they are. I will say the closest album challenge that was decided by only 14 votes was Shibou Shaba and the swing. Oh, really? That one was by far the closest. I could, and I had a feeling that was gonna go that way, especially for you guys that you know found in excess much further earlier than you know some of us did. So um, so that one was was a good one. Um, let me get let me get my notes, people. Because I'm gonna show you something. I when I tell you I have been sitting down and tallying finger by hand, and I mean these are numbers. I don't know if you can see this. Oh my goodness, all the work she's been doing. I mean, these are tallies, front, back, sides. So I don't take this lightly. Um the biggest difference was Switch and Original Sin. Oh, original Sin just is not as popular as the Switch is Switch. I don't think many people know it exists myself. Yeah, that one was really surprising. Um, and then the two albums that got the most votes total were X and Welcome to Wherever You Are.
SPEAKER_00Ah, they had the most votes, more people voted on those two. Are these coming out um like weekly or are they all coming out on different types of days?
SPEAKER_08I mean, wonder if I have been doing the Allen Challenge daily. So now we're up to our head-to-head. So today started. So these will probably break up um just because I'm I'm back to work. You guys have been off for several days. So what I'm probably gonna do is let it rest for a day and then come back. Um, but the ultimate goal is to basically reach the number one fan album voted on by NXS fans.
SPEAKER_00ICAT But we all know that usually that takes that spot is kick. Yes. Um, but who do you think is in the game? What well who? Which one should be why?
SPEAKER_08I personally think it is going to come down to shabu and kick.
SPEAKER_00You do, yeah, I'd say so as well. So let let us know at this point who's still in the game. Who's left in the game is an excess debut.
SPEAKER_08We've got full moon dirty hearts, we've got X, we've got Kick, we've got Shabu.
SPEAKER_00Oh, not many. Okay, well, guys, get out there. Um, go on to is this going on to Instagram and Facebook or just onto Facebook?
SPEAKER_08I think it's just Facebook right now. Um yeah, just Facebook. But you guys, I I put them up and you guys are voting within like minutes.
SPEAKER_00So I know, and there's loads of lovely comments as well. I'm really enjoying reading the comments. So, yeah, so get out there if you haven't been, get on there if you want your favorite album of in excesses to win, and let's see. And then we'll come back in season three with the winner, and then we will do a deep dive on that album. There we go. There we go. There you go. And we'll get Andrew in there, and hopefully, Manny. Manny, Manny's been very busy. He keeps saying, Oh, sorry, bubbling up for air and go back again. So we need to get him on. Manny um wrote a book about in excesses songs called Track by Track, and it's phenomenal. In fact, it's under my pillow. He said, I said, I think I've lost it, and then I found it. So now it's like, right, you live under the pillow, you're not moving, mate. So yeah, so that that's where that lies.
SPEAKER_08Um there it goes. Oh, Michael. There he goes.
SPEAKER_00Right, okay. He wants to YouTube read track by track, obviously. And if I give a little wave, usually I come back, but it's taken a while. Perhaps I'm anyway. If you're watching, Michael's taken over my screen of posting, um, which is which is fine. I'm sure you all like to have a look at him. Well, most of the girls will anyway, and some boys. Okay, I'm not coming back. Here I am, right. Um good on you, mate. Now we're gonna take a short break between our seasons. Um, we're going to have a nice rest. Um, we still obviously will be doing the social, so you can see um what we're up to there. And the chat group never stops, it keeps going, and we would um love to reply to all your emails as well. So you can um email us on listenlikefans at gmail.com and we'd love to um know more about you and send in your and if you've got a story as well, yeah, maybe we can get you on the show. Um, so yeah, the community is growing bigger and bigger, more global and more global. And Danielle, thank you so much for all your hard work. Thank you to the rest of the team as well. You know who you are, the Gales, the the Carrie Anns, and um Andrew and Manny, you just being fantastic, helping me. Um Paul and Paul and Glenn um also um they they they do a lot behind the scenes too. So so good, so good. And John Jamin, well done. You're still keeping that flag burning for um getting in excess indected into the rock and roll hall of fame. We're we're still watching that. And um, Dr. Jim also with um Shannon for um doing the petition there. So if you haven't signed that, make sure you're signing the petition. Okay, well, we'll say goodbye and we'll let you listen to the um interview that um um Danielle did with the New Sensation Boys, and uh yeah, it's a goodbye from uh oh no, that's in XS Access All Areas. I'm I'm not going there. Right, okay. So um, well, see you later, Danielle.
SPEAKER_08All right, beautiful B. I'll talk to you soon. Bye, guys. Bye.
SPEAKER_05My name is Tony Forcucci, I play guitar in New Sensation uh in the role of Tim Ferriss.
SPEAKER_01I am Brad Evans uh in the role of Kirk Ben Gilly. I play Saxon guitar.
SPEAKER_02Hey, I'm Dean Kanjian of New Sensation. I am a Michael Hutchins interpreter.
SPEAKER_04John Presty Jr. I play drums for the band uh in the role of John Ferris.
SPEAKER_06I'm Eric Eric Sands in the role of Gary Gary Beers.
SPEAKER_09All right, guys, I'm Danielle, and I am with Listen Like Fans or the Love of NXS. I'm an ambassador for the podcast, and I will be doing an interview with New Sensation. So, can you guys tell us a little bit more about yourself and people discovering New Sensation for the first time? How would you describe what makes your tribute different from other NXS tribute bands?
SPEAKER_03Let's say what distinguishes us first and foremost is that there are so few NXS tribute bands and even fewer active ones, particularly in the States. Um my background is an actor. I did chorus in high school, uh, and then I think I was doing karaoke one night, maybe Enter Sandman by Metallica, caught Eric's here, so I got a chance to audition for this band that I'd heard, you know, heard Don't Change on Planet Radio 93.3 in like 2000. And at the time I was only into like heavy new metal, and I was like, this this really I really like this, it makes me feel super positive and want to do something good with my life. And of course, I'd heard new sensation and stuff like that, and listen like thieves. Then it just kind of came back around. It's kind of a full circle moment. But uh, I'm the newest edition to the band, so I'm gonna give it off to when we started this band.
SPEAKER_04Um, the Eric, Tony, and I started the band about 10 years ago. One we wanted to do was we replicate all the sounds we can from an XS from the albums that I can. We try to pull that in. So the keyboards and I are doing about 60 samples to get the authentic and XS sounds as much as we can from the stuff. Then we dial the guitars in to get that too. So we try to make that as close as the fans can get to hearing the albums when we play live.
SPEAKER_01And just a little quick story about how I joined the band. I've been in about uh six years, and uh my friends and I one night saw that an NXS tribute band was playing uh in Atlanta. We got super excited, went out to see them, uh, these guys, and uh they brought the house down. We were so super impressed. And at the end of the show, John says, Well, you know, uh, give a round of applause for our sax player. This is his last gig. He's moving on to bigger and better things. And so I walked up to the stage and said, Hey, do you need a sax player? And the rest is history I've been in since then.
SPEAKER_05So John and I played in some bands 10, 12 years ago that were not top 40 bands, but lots of songs by lots of different groups. One day the keyboard player at the time left and he went to go join a tribute band. And we sort of said, What is this? We went to go see that tribute band, and we got it instantly. It wasn't just hits that you know serve as wallpaper, it was a show. So we turned around in the club and we saw all these posters, and there was no in excess poster on this. There was prints, there was guns and roses, there are all these bands where people were doing the tribute thing. We said, you know, we looked at three or four different ideas. We said, you know, in access is makes sense. They sold out Wembley, they had Michael Hutchins, they had all these hits. Let's go do this thing, and then we put it together and step by step, and that was nine years ago. Next year will be 10, 2017, is when we first did this music. And I will tell you, we're still learning bits and pieces of this music after 10 years because it happens. You you hear a song, you go, I never I never heard that part before, which is the weirdest thing, and only a couple of minutes each, but here you go.
SPEAKER_09All right. So, what was it about NXS that made you want to dedicate a whole show to your music?
SPEAKER_05Because it's fucking cool.
SPEAKER_04Definitely uniqueness. Um positive, like he was talking about. Um, actually, when we found him, our our first thing I moved on as well, and we wanted someone that would bring more of that charisma to the stage. And he walked in and just kind of he really hit it out of the park right away. Even though this some of the stuff was new to him, he took the time to learn this stuff. And uh NXS sounds simple, but their songs have a lot of space in them, and you've got to understand the arrangements. The hardest thing about this band is the arrangements of the songs, nothing is like just verse chorus, verse chorus. They do things in odd times, they go to five, they make you go, wait a minute, what was that? That happens all the time. So we're still learning that stuff when we hear it. That's what makes it unique about playing this music, at least for me.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, also NXS is one of the few bands that have enough hits to put together a whole show, you know, without going to wait, you know, too many deep cuts or covers of other bands to fill out the the you know the 90 minutes or two hours that the tribute band normally plays. And also they appeal to a really wide audience. I remember I used to work in a record store after college, and you know, you had new wave people, heavy metal people, and nobody could agree. The staff can never agree what to play on on the turntable. Dating myself here a little bit. Hold on, okay. And uh, right, and uh, but in excess is one thing that everybody likes. We put that on and everybody was cool. And so it says a lot about their music. A lot they have a lot of influences in music too. I I hear Motown and Rock and all kinds of different things. So it's yeah, it's just kind of just great music.
SPEAKER_09Which in XS song is your favorite show form live? Does that change everything?
SPEAKER_03Ooh, that's tough. Uh if I had to narrow it down, I would probably say Original Sin. It was it wasn't the first NX NXS song I ever heard, but it was one of the first five I learned for the tryout. And so it's meant a lot to me, and especially the music video, Michael on a guitar. I'm not guitar, Michael on a motorcycle. It's the jet lag. Gosh, it's already been three years since I joined. Time really flies, especially when you're having fun. We have so much fun. I also something about elegantly wasted really speaks to me, too. And it's I think maybe because uh, you know, it was kind of in the latter years, Michael Hutchins, you know, in his mid to late 30s, probably like mid-30s, the video, like the real the video really stood out to me, and uh, you know, it kind of speaks to the name of the band NXS, Elegantly Wasted. I was like, oh, how apropos, and it just it feels really cool live, and it's like I can just be like, hey everyone, raise your glass, you know, elegantly wasted.
SPEAKER_06But yeah, yeah, for me it's new sensation, it's one of the biggest grooves of any song anywhere in the world. It's just incredible.
SPEAKER_01And for me, I'll be selfish. Any of the songs with a saxel and never tears apart, brings the house down, and you know, when I can go out in the audience and play that saxel in the end, it's great. I love everybody looking at me, you know?
SPEAKER_09All right, is there an NXS song you wish you could include in the set but have it yet? And why?
SPEAKER_04Uh one of the ones I love is Same Direction. Um, that album, Listen Like Thieves, is just a great album for me top to bottom. Um, also, when I saw them uh uh on the kick tour, they closed the Red Red Sun, which is one song they don't play very often, but they let it rip on that last song. Um, that album's been very special to me. But uh same direction, I heard the demo version of that and what it became in the album version is amazing. But they have a lot of songs we've talked about, but it's hard. You know, once you get past the first 15 or 20 of the hits, people want to see the hit hear the hits. We try to give them a couple deep cuts. You know, I love playing Kiss the Dirt off that album as well. That's a huge one for me.
SPEAKER_09You've had a change of front men in recent years. What made you feel a new singer was the right person to take on such a challenge role?
SPEAKER_03Well, that wasn't my choice. I don't think I'll pass this to Eric or Tony.
SPEAKER_05So, all right, so we were looking for a new singer, and we went to where we practice, and I got there a little earlier than John, and um then Dean showed up, and when he showed up, he showed up, he had long hair, uh, no shirt, and a leather vest, jeans, cowboy boots. And I remember I went upstairs in the practice house, and uh I called John. I said, Look, if this guy can sing, he's got the job.
SPEAKER_01He can carry it too.
SPEAKER_05That was it. If he can sing, he's got the you know, he's six foot. What how would he six two? Six three, six three, you know, he's got the the body, the hair, the these leather. Wait, so wait, we do the audition, it's like three, four songs. The the third song, Off Comes the Vest, does the whole audition topless, right? It's shirtless, right? We're like, this guy's got cojones, right? So anyway, and then he could sing and it was right in Michael's register. It just all worked out, and then at the end of that practice, Eric said, I don't think we need a meeting. I think, like, let's not be coy here. You you got the gig, and that was it. So we auditioned one singer, it was him. He got the show, and that was it.
SPEAKER_06Then I took my shirt off and eyes to let me back in the band.
SPEAKER_09So stepping into Michael Hutchins' shoes is obviously a huge responsibility. How did you approach finding your own way of performing these songs while still honoring Michael?
SPEAKER_03Uh, I had to watch the Wembley performance several hundred times, is what it felt like. Because I did have to learn um, you know, 20 plus other songs that I did not write, because I I believe it was uh four or five for the audition, borrowing kind of what I knew, well, not kind of what I always loved the doors, and just kind of watching how Michael Hutchins was like he was like a faster, more nimble Jim Morrison and didn't fall on the fall on the ground as much or at all. So I kind of just kind of created this amalgam of of those two characters and then added like a little bit of Elvis leg shaking in there. I'd never thought I could completely replicate it move for move. Um, but I knew you know his voice being within my range and him also being very lean, like I, you know, love to lift weights and stuff. So I had to kind of find that middle ground of uh of being like being kind of like lean, but also that's where I'm looking for. Not effeminate. Well, yeah, maybe a f yeah, maybe a little cat. Like a little cat-like, you know. He was cat-like. That's actually really good, John. I'm gonna use that, but that's a tough. I've never been asked that question before.
SPEAKER_09All right. So Michael had such an unmistakable stage presence. What aspects of his performance style you consciously try to capture and what you deliberately make your own.
SPEAKER_03So, what I consciously try to capture is uh, I'm gonna go back to Wimley again, how he is just, you know, gallivanting across the stage like a swimmer swimming laps. And you know, he's got like this uh like this it's kind of lilt or something, I don't know how to describe it. This lilt swagger, this yeah, just really effortless swagger, like loose, like he's had a few Carlsbergs, you know. I brought one for tonight, but um and I feel like what I what I decided to make my own was. Um, just like maybe a little more like power stances, that sort of thing. Kind of, you know, Scott Stapp from Creed or whatever. But but not, you know, but trying to keep it in the vein of NXS Michael Hutchins without being too like bodybuilder and stuff like that. Because that's not that's not who I am outside of this band either. It's just something I like to do. Yeah, and I guess the call and response and uh what you need from Wembley is one of my favorite things to do because that's I can really check the pulse of the audience, and by that time we're like 70, 75% through the show, and that's when I know like they're gonna be talking about this, you know, because I never got to see NXS, sadly. But all these people have, all these people were huge fans, and you know, it's an honor for me to do as much justice as I can to a singer of Michael Hutchins' caliber and a band of NXS caliber, and uh, you know, make sure it's something that people uh that just lifts their spirits when they're here and they you know take it home with them and have like a few weeks, months, years of afterglow or whatever. I mean, that's how I feel after a good show. I feel like most of the band can agree.
SPEAKER_09All right. What has been the biggest challenge for you personally? I mean, the footman of an in-access treatment.
SPEAKER_03Uh well, going back to what John said, how it's not simple music. It is, you know, quasi-progressive in certain areas, you know, by my sides and three. There's like maybe some five-four in there somewhere. I've definitely repeated verses before, but it's not for lack of not remembering, it's just as an I've done this as an actor in front of the camera where I've just gotten so lost in what I was doing that the words just didn't come out, or they came out as something else. And so I do, I do believe that's probably the worst thing that's happened. But as long as I don't like get bug-eyed, people don't really notice it, and the people who are really enjoying themselves are forgiving, just like the band is. They're like, Well, we're having fun, everyone's having fun. It's okay if you it's live, it's live, and I did not write a single word. It is not my music, and so that is it is tough sometimes, but again, it's the pressure of measuring up to a band of that caliber.
SPEAKER_04Plus, the songwriters in that band was Michael and Andrew, right? The main ones. So all the arrangements they come up with that are kind of oddball, even though you can dance to them, they'll go an extra measure, they'll go short, they'll go long, they'll turn around, and that makes it difficult for the singer as well to find all the right places to come in. Even something like uh there's tons of them.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, better on that one. Yeah, what makes it difficult is there are no cues. Usually a drum fill will, you know, tell the band, okay, next part. They don't do that. No, they leave space on purpose, they're unique that way.
SPEAKER_03And I'm not gonna be counting in that space. I'm just I'm just like, oh, people are here, you know.
SPEAKER_09All right, the fans have definitely noticed that you bring a lot of energy, physicality to the stage, and occasionally leaves the shirts. Is that part of the planned show, or does the music just take over?
SPEAKER_03Well, going back to my audition, I I wore the vest with no shirt because I just I overheat easily. Eric's basement was very hot that day, and every rehearsal after that, it was just as hot, even in the dead of winter.
SPEAKER_05And um, it's because you have a six bed.
SPEAKER_03Well, maybe, but uh no, honestly, like it it just it does get really hot. And also, I feel like, like I said earlier, if I happen to uh repeat a verse or something, I feel like the audience is more forgiving if uh I'm like listening. I'm not I'm not that vain, I swear. It's just like here's I'm like, oh, here's another thing I could bring to it, and it's uh you know, I take care of myself and you know, whatever. But uh yeah, so it's planned now. Short answer. It is planned now. Usually comes off after Suicide Blonde because even though I'm just wearing like a leather vest or something, by that time I'm about to pass out from heat exhaustion.
SPEAKER_09All right, or the in excess man. What do you think it is about an excess that continues to connect so strongly with audiences decades later?
SPEAKER_04I'll go second. Their music is timeless, they're in shows in HBO, they're in movies, they're in commercials, they're everywhere. They still are. Um it's it comes around and my kids are catching on to it too now. So it's you know, it's just they're they never went away. Except if Michael hadn't passed away, they'd have had a dozen more hits, they'd have been as big as that could be right now.
SPEAKER_06That's no doubt. I heard it in public supermarket just a few minutes before this interview.
SPEAKER_03So I was at Chase Bank a few weeks ago and I heard Disappear. I heard The Devil Inside in this movie called The Devil Conspiracy. And I also heard Never Tear Us Apart in the latest season of The Boys on Amazon, so it's everywhere, and before that, innumerable occasions I've heard it and euphoria, shit.
SPEAKER_01Uh, for me, it's the groove, right? It this move this music never gets boring to me. I I've been doing this same show for six years, and I'm still dancing on stage like it's the first time I heard it. I love it.
SPEAKER_05I agree with John, it's timeless. There's not a lot of bands that they can write music and it's not dated. More than half the songs we play, you couldn't put it to a year, it just exists. So I think there's a quality of NXS music that makes it fun for us to go out and do it. And again, and it's live, so you know, I think audiences appreciate it because you can't go see in XS, right? You can still go see U2. It's either a tribute or nothing at this moment, right? So we're actually trying to do what we can. We do it for fun, but we do it also because it keeps us alive to a some some degree, you know.
SPEAKER_09What's the reaction you get from people who actually saw NXS live back in the day?
SPEAKER_03The reactions that have stuck out to me were Aussies who've come up to me and said, I might, you nailed it. Sorry, it's a terrible impression. You didn't I should be better at accents, but uh shut up here. But um, yeah, hearing Aussies just tell me that I did Michael Hudson's justice, or you know, random people who said they saw them in '85 and you know, or even shit in 75.
SPEAKER_05We had a guy come to the Charlotte show last year from Australia, and he he couldn't believe his ears. After the show, he came up to us. He's like, I never thought I would see in the United States a band playing success. And he he's on some trip in the States and all. He was blown away that someone would even attempt this stuff. You know, and then after we played the show, he he he was he wasn't in tears, but he was like he was moved, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we get people coming up to us after the show all the time that want to tell us stories about what NXS meant to them in their life, and it it's really touching, uh, you know, and it just shows the universality of this music.
SPEAKER_09Have you ever had an NXS fan tell you something after a show that really stayed with you?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03You guys have been doing this longer than I have.
SPEAKER_05He's got one. Back again in Charlotte, uh, just like you drove here today. There was a there was a cancer survivor who came to our show in Charlotte. David. David. And and he yeah, he follows us. If he he probably seen this, and we were blown away. He he he came front row, he knew every word, he was a huge NXS fan, he beat cancer, and that was this was like a big deal for him to come see a live band play NXS music live because in his life this means something to him, right? So that I mean, you don't get that too often, but uh that happened to us.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, David came all the way from Virginia hours before to see the show.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, so hey David, if you're watching.
SPEAKER_03What's up, David?
SPEAKER_09All right, you can have one piece of advice from Michael Legends about for me. What would you want him to tell you?
SPEAKER_03Uh I'd probably want him to tell me to relax a little more because you know he had the effortless swagger, and sometimes I feel like I'm too busy trying to impress people or put on. Whereas he wasn't putting on at all, he was just taking off, you know. Uh just taking off like you know, these opaque layers, these social layers that people put, these masks basically. And yeah, I wish I could shed mine a little more easily, but again, I'm trying to measure up to someone who's immeasurable.
SPEAKER_04It's one of the one of the greats.
SPEAKER_09From the early club days to the king, like these kick X and beyond. Which era do you personally connect with the most?
SPEAKER_06I know what you're gonna say.
SPEAKER_04You know what you're gonna say.
SPEAKER_06I know you got me. Come back to me on that one. No, I I like other albums because we we listen to all of them in the record stories. For me, it's tough, and they're out of order too. So it's we we it's like several albums all at once. I was like, but I discovered them, you know, they already had a few albums out, so I was can't really think what I'd have to say the early 80s.
SPEAKER_04You know, but that's one thing I'll say as well is um for a while we played the entire kick album front to back. Um, we did that for three or four shows. Um, it was a lot of fun to do that. But um, I noticed also their songs remixed are really cool. They're one of the few bands you can play remix this stuff. It sounds as good as the original, with all we just talked about open fold stuff today. That John Ferris has that new uh playlist on Spotify. I followed it right away, I went through it, it's great stuff. But yeah, for me, listen like thieves was the huge one for me when it really hit that really hit me hard. Um, kick was the big one that everybody else had, but for me it was listening like thieves.
SPEAKER_03I was also gonna say listen like thieves, but um, it's a very interactive song. I feel like I can get half the audience to start sliding to everybody down on me, you know.
SPEAKER_05But uh yeah, not to copy this guy, but uh I can actually tell you for me, it's the era of uh the swing in Shibushaba because I was in high school during that period, and I had the cassettes when you could look at a cassette or an album, and you saw the imagery, and I didn't quite know who this band was, but I liked the music. There was really out there songs like dancing on the jetty and things like so. That's what I remember visually is the swing cassette and the shibou shaba cassette. Uh, so that was my introduction to Nnexis back in the day.
SPEAKER_09All right. So NXS weren't just about Michael, the six members create a very distinctive sound together. How important is it for new sensation to capture the new sensationship with the chemistry of the whole band?
SPEAKER_06I have an interesting story about that. Yeah, I uh I had the honor and privilege of spending a day with Gary Gary Beers uh when he was launching his new uh bass line, which I recommend every bass player check out. Um and I was put on the spot and in one of the stores, and he's like, Well, play something for me. I was like, Oh my god. So which is just a surreal thing to do. So I I played a few songs, but I you know I I tend to play things a little bit my way. A lot of musicians do. You change things a little bit to suit your your whatever, your personality, whatever. So he told me, he said, You're messing with the formula. So I took that as like serious correction, and I went back and listened to it, try to get more nuances and try to get more exactly. But uh that was you know, advice, you just can't get that kind of advice for it. So that was very valuable.
SPEAKER_01I'll say something about that. Yeah, I don't know if people realize you know, the musician shit that that Kirk brings, it is it's not easy to play saxophone and guitar. Um, you know, I I grew up as a sax player and learned guitar later in life. They are as different as they could possibly be. I mean, it's it's like you know, starting from scratch to learn to play guitar. And so I I do both, and I've had to work really hard at it, and it just makes me really appreciate what a fine musician that guy is.
SPEAKER_05And I'll tell you, in Access on guitar, there are certain keys that are easier to play than others. And in Access has a range of songs that are not in the easy keys, right? They're in, you know, D flat or something like that. So the musicianship is tricky, and that's what I was saying earlier. We're still listening to this music after 10 years and still figuring out that maybe we weren't playing that one piece right. That if I just move my hand over here, it oh, look at that, opens up everything else. So it's really again, the music is not hard to play, but the structure of these songs is not normal, all right? It's you really have to commit it to memory. There's no, like Eric said, there's no bass, uh reverse chorus, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge. Listen like thieves is a perfect example. That song is in the weirdest order. Things happen in four, four, four, and then one time and one time only, it happens in five, and then you're back, and there's no notice. You just do it. We screwed that up for four years, right?
SPEAKER_09So which it access members you think doesn't get enough recognition for what they brought spans.
SPEAKER_04They're all over overshadowed by Michael. Yeah, that's true. Oh, thanks, guys. I obviously, I mean, as this lead one of the songwriters, Andrew, you know, and he's doing his own thing now with the new country music he has. Um, but yeah, those two together were the magic. They really were. I mean, the fact they were all brothers was great too. They had that camaraderie coming up together. But um, yeah, I mean, Andrew just he's amazing. He did things with drums, and as a drummer, John was doing stuff way ahead of his time. There's no doubt about that. From the Rhodotom's to you know, I'm sampling all that stuff tonight. Um, it's easier to carry all that stuff around. It's a lot of equipment we had, but he had acoustic and electronic drums and samples and loops that he was working with with his brother. Like kind of what we do, um, back and forth together. And they they really brought a unique blend of those sounds.
SPEAKER_06What really strikes me though is how young they were uh to be such high-level musicians. You know, listen to the sack solos. It was a kid playing that stuff, it's just mind-blowing to me. You know, just listen to the the composition is very mature, a lot of those songs. You know, don't change. They were babies. Listen to that song, it's just amazing. I'm so blown away by them.
SPEAKER_09If you should perform one song with any original member in excess, who would it be? And what song would you choose?
SPEAKER_01That'd be really tough. It'd be great to play with Michael, but then we'd be leaving Dean outside.
SPEAKER_03I would sit out for that just to watch.
SPEAKER_06There's no question.
SPEAKER_05That's a hard question.
SPEAKER_03It's really hard. That's not fair.
SPEAKER_05With any of them, yeah, they whatever they want. There were six individual they all had a different piece of the formula. You know what I mean? Gary Gary Beers held down the groove, you know. Uh sorry, no mic. Uh Gary Gary Beers held down the groove, just they laid back, you know, three in the back, three in the front, and he just sat there and did his thing. But you you remove that piece of it, and the whole song changes. So it's hard to figure out or say, oh, this is my favorite. They're not the spice girls, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_09All right, so we're gonna go for a couple fun ones and finish this up, you guys, so we can get on to the show. Um be honest, what is the hardest in access song to sing live?
SPEAKER_03New sensation. That's a tough one. It's all over the place. You know, Michael's got he's got some nonfluences in there, you know. It's it's like that's not a word. How do I do that? Uh, you know, he's got some vibrato, some staccato. It it does push me, and we play it pretty early in the set. And it's not necessarily the range, it's um it's just the placement of the nose, really. And I mean, gosh. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well that song, he's really he's really pushing it for his own range too, on that song. He's really bringing it.
SPEAKER_03That's true, but like for some reason when I get to kick in the set, I'm like, oh, this is you know, but it is tough. Like, I really have to do some some serious like diaphragmatic breathing exercises just to you know, have control.
SPEAKER_09Alright, what NXS song gets the biggest reaction from the crowd every single time?
SPEAKER_03Oh man, that I think that comes down to the top three would be New Sensation, Don't Change, and Never Tear Us Apart. I think never tear us apart because by the time we play that at the end, everyone, you know, everyone's with their partner, their lover, whatever, whoever best friends, and everyone is just together in this moment in this experience. And then you have Brad just popping out of nowhere doing his sack solo on the dance floor, and so everyone's just like, you know, oh my god, it's so interactive and like an immersive experience. But also, I'd probably say don't change as well, because even though it's just kind of it's almost a little bit, it's like a farewell, it's a positive farewell, it's not it's not goodbye, it's see you later. Those type of vibes.
SPEAKER_09Finally, how many shirts do you actually go through on a show?
SPEAKER_03Uh at the beginning, two. Um, now I've found it appropriate just to have one and to pop it off, you know, halfway through. That way I don't have to do so much laundry, because come on.
SPEAKER_09And I definitely finished if Michael Hutchins walked into the venue tonight and watched your entire show from the back of the room. What would you hope he got?
SPEAKER_03I I I would hope he thought that he's really glad he ran into the Ferris brothers in high school, became friends with them, and started making some of the most timeless universal music that's ever existed.
SPEAKER_04I hope he also would think that we paid respect to their music. Um, we're really trying to do the best we can with what they recorded because it really is timeless. Um that's just how it is.
SPEAKER_06I think he'd love it. Yeah, yeah. We'd love it. He'd jump up on stage. Come on. Oh, he yeah, you have to.
SPEAKER_03I gave the humble answer.
SPEAKER_09All right, guys. Thank you so much. Thank you.
SPEAKER_03Thanks for having us, Danielle.
SPEAKER_00Well, that was fantastic, Danielle. Well done to you and the boys. That was awesome to listen to. So um, big thank you to all my team. I forgot to mention Kylie. Kylie, my gorgeous girl. She helps me uh tremendously behind the scenes as well. Um, so yeah, until next time, listen like fans. Before we wrap up, I just want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for listening, sharing, commenting, and being part of the listen like fans family.
