How To Protect Your Vision When Nobody Gets It
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
When the people who should know you best look at your dream and shrug, it can mess with your confidence fast. We start with that tension head-on: what do you do when God gives you a clear vision, but your family, friends, or community treat it like it’s unrealistic, dramatic, or even “too much”?
We sit in Mark 6 and watch Jesus face the same thing in his hometown. The crowd can’t separate the wisdom from the messenger, so they reduce him to a familiar identity and take offense. From there, we dig into the deeper sting of family doubt in Mark 3, including why Mary’s reactions make sense when you consider the pressure, danger, and pace of Jesus’ calling. Sometimes pushback isn’t hatred, it’s fear. Sometimes it’s protection. Sometimes it’s projection. Discernment helps you respond with wisdom instead of bitterness.
Then we get practical. We talk boundaries that fiercely protect your focus, the hard truth that shared blood does not mean shared vision, and the rule you may need to live by: proximity does not equal access. We also anchor identity where it belongs, in what God says, revisiting the Father’s affirmation in Mark 1 and using scripture, journaling, and remembrance to stay grounded when opinions get loud.

When Your Vision Feels Unsupported
SPEAKER_00Hello, everybody. Welcome to the Light of Left podcast. I'm your host, Ritendo. Thank you so much for joining me today. So, question for you. What do you do when the vision that God gave you seems completely invisible to those around you? And I'm not only talking about your immediate family, maybe your friends. I'm talking about even your community, the people that you grew up around, the people that you call your tribe. You expect them to be in your corner fully. You've been fighting so hard to pursue your purpose. You've been trying to build a brand, maybe, launch a business, finish a very demanding degree. And it seems like no one gets it. They're like, why are you doing such a degree? They don't see the vision, but you know where you're going. You know what you want to do with your life. So if that's you, the good news is you're in the right place today. Because by the end of this episode, it is my desire, my sincere desire that you're going to walk away with practical boundaries that you need to fiercely, and I mean fiercely protect your focus and the exact mindset shift, because it's going to take a mindset shift for you to stop chasing local approval. It's difficult. A lot of people, they want to be approved by their community, but sometimes you won't get that approval and you have to move on regardless. So that's what we're going to be dealing with today. So before I go into our main scripture for the day, I just want to let you know what our organization and what this podcast is about. This podcast exists to give you a realistic picture of what it looks like to walk the walk of faith. Aside from religion or any performative belief system, dogma, we are giving you tools and equipping you so you see what it looks like in this day and age to walk with God on a day-to-day basis. So
Mark 6 And The Hometown Test
SPEAKER_00our scripture reading today is coming from the book of Mark, chapter one, maybe let's say through six. I want you to know that that lack of support that you're experiencing from your community, from your family, from those that you, your loved ones, let me say from your loved ones, you are not the first, and you're definitely not going to be the last. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ experienced it on a deeper level. And let's read from our scripture today, and you're going to understand as we go along. So Mark 6, verse 1, it says, Jesus went out from there and came into his hometown, and his disciples followed him. And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many listeners were astonished, saying, Where did this man learn these things? And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? And such miracles as these performed by his hands. Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon? And are his sisters not here with us? And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, Prophet is not dishonored, except in his hometown, and among his own relatives, and in his own household. And he could not do any miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them, and he was amazed at their unbelief. So that was our reading today. And like I mentioned before, Jesus himself, who is the author and finisher of our faith, faced this lack of support for his vision and his purpose and his calling. Not only, there are two groups that I want us to focus on that we can extract from this scripture. The first group, of course, being his family, his immediate family. And the next group is his community. Like I mentioned, it can be very painful. If you go to verse 3, it just jumped out to me when I was actually studying and meditating on the scripture that they said, is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James? They broke apart his identity according to them, because Nazareth was, it was a village, and everyone pretty much knew each other. And I wondered, because at the end of that verse, it says, And they took offense at him. And I thought, why are they offended? Have you ever noticed that there are certain people that actually are offended at your level of dreaming, at your level of vision that you're trying to build? They are not only doubting that you can do it, but they have a level of offense. And you're thinking, what have I done to you? And if you look deeper at the context of the scripture, I mentioned that Nazareth was a village. Everyone knew each other, and they felt like his social class because he was a carpenter. And a carpenter now is not, of course, the highest of occupations. It's not the most prestigious. It's not a white-collar office, maybe Wall Street job that gives you six figures. So when Jesus stood up in the synagogue and he began to teach and he was exhibiting this wisdom and authority, they couldn't reconcile the carpenter, the stonemason. Because the word carpenter they use there, it has like a blanket meaning of a woodworker, a stonemason, or even a builder. So this is hard manual labor. And you know, someone who does those kinds of jobs, especially back in the day when grooming hadn't reached the levels that we have today. You know that a carpenter is sweaty, a carpenter, maybe their hands are stained and they have a lot of bruises. They're not the most polished people. So their offense, I don't think it was coming from what he was saying, but it was who was saying it. We hear what you're saying and we see these miracles, and we see you healing people. We see you casting out these evil spirits and explaining these revelations, but you're not the one who is supposed to be doing this. Where did he get the audacity? Is what they were saying. It's the audacity for me. Okay. Where did you get the authority and the calling? How does a stonemason have the guts? And even them calling him the son of Mary. It was a patriarchal society. They should have called him the son of Joseph, but they're alluding to the circumstances of his birth. That we all know that your mother was already pregnant before she got married to your dad. So most likely you're not the son of Joseph. You're born in iniquity. You're a shapen in iniquity. They're trying to demean him and also demean his message. Because your background is so plain to us. We know where you came from. Their offense, like I mentioned before, was rooted in the idea that they're not going, they couldn't reconcile the carpenter acting with as much authority as the lawyers, the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elite. So, ladies and gentlemen, I am warning you against judging a book by its cover. And how, you know, familiarity, the adage says, familiarity breeds contempt, something that feels familiar and humble, and something that you feel like you know in and out. People don't have much respect
Why Familiarity Turns Into Contempt
SPEAKER_00for that. And this was kind of a prophecy that was already given. If you go back to the Messianic prophecies, Isaiah 53, maybe the first part, 53, verse 2b, it says there was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. And I told you before, they were thinking, why would God skip skip the religious elite that we all know are trained for years and years and years? Why would he pick you? And let's not be quick to judge them, because I always ask myself, it, if it were me back in those days, would I have believed him? Would I have been part of those people judging him? Would I have been enlightened enough to know that divinity likes to cover and camouflage itself in the profane. That's what people don't understand in the things that you think you would never find God here. That's where he likes to hide. Because he knows if he comes in his majesty, everyone is going to come to him. Anyway, back to family.
When Family Tries To Stop You
SPEAKER_00Remember, I was focusing, breaking down the two groups. First, your community, where you grew up, where you feel like you went to school, you used to go to the store there. These are people that knew you. You think they're going to celebrate you. Now we're even going deeper into your family roots, your family bonds. It was very painful and triggering when I was reading it, because I thought, how did he get past it? I was praying actually, asking the Lord, how did you handle this? If you go to verse 21, Mark chapter 3, this one's the NLT version. It says, when his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. He's out of his mind, they said. And you go, you jump to verse 31, it says, Then Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him. They stood outside and sent word for him to come out and talk with them. So imagine he already had a had a congregation of people waiting to hear him preach. The congregation were trusting him as a prophet, as a messiah, as a rising rabbi. People were believing in him. And his family, his brother and his mother, are outside asking him to leave those that believe in him and come speak with them outside. They're not even willing to be part of the crowd. They're calling him crazy and out of his mind. And yet these are his own family. And I was thinking to myself, I understand the brothers being skeptical because they're siblings. You know, how do you think of your sibling? A lot of times we are very familiar, and you're just thinking, oh, that's my brother, that's my that's my bro, that's my sister. You know, the reverence doesn't come naturally. But I wondered even more deeply about Mary, because Mary got to get the prophecy from an angel, the angel Gabriel. If you go to Luke 1, verse 32. He came and he visits, she knows that she had an immaculate conception, and she knows, Luke 1, verse 32, the angel said, He will be great and will be called son of the most high. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end. So after hearing such a strong, heavy prophecy, and you all know what happened afterwards, if you if you read, just read Luke chapter 1, Luke chapter 2, Luke chapter 3. You're going to get most of what I'm talking about. She went to see her cousin, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth even confirmed that, oh my goodness, you're carrying my savior. They all knew who Jesus was even before he was born. So I was asking, why was she the one almost leading the efforts to tone down his ministry? And remember, I always say we're psychological beings, there is a humanity to us. And if I look with a non-judgmental eye on Mary, the mother of Jesus, she was told that he was going to reign over the house of Jacob forever. So maybe she had her own idea of how God was going to do it, but instead she saw him skipping meals. If you go to Mark 3, verse 20. And he had this very eccentric behavior. Remember when he was 12 years old, they lost him after having gone to the temple to worship, and they lost him. And after finding him, he was not apologetic at all. He just said, You should have known that I'm doing my father's business. At 30 years old, he's surrounded by pressing crowds. He didn't have this majesty that they thought. He's in small little places, either synagogues or in someone's house, and crowds are following him everywhere. And remember, this is still her son, her boy. She's thinking religious leaders are now coming. They're trying to execute him, they're trying, they're plotting against him because of all these claims that he was making, which put him in danger. Mary was having a crisis of perspective. Because she had this maternal instinct, of course, to protect him. It kicked in the moment she saw crowds pressing up against him. If you read further in the book of Mark, it actually says sometimes he wouldn't be able to eat. That's how the crowds would swarm him and scramble for him. And she's experiencing all this, and it's happening almost like all at once. If you read though, Luke chapter 2, verse 19, and somewhere in that chapter, if you go further down, it says, Mary treasured up these things within our heart. Whenever these things would happen, like for example, when they lost him at the temple, and he said what he said as a response to her, she always, it says that she treasured these things within our heart. So it shows that she was going through a phase of belief and understanding. She knew the initial visit by the angel Gabriel. Yes, I understand. I'm going to give birth to the Son of God. I'm going to, but it didn't set in all at once. The journey of faith, it never happens overnight. It's a process for all of us. That's why we have to go through all these different experiences which built our faith. So she loved him. She wanted to protect him from the perils of his calling, seemingly. And that's what I want you to also reflect maybe on yourself, instead of being very hard on your family. That why are they not believing in me? I can do this. Why are they not, you know, giving up everything and supporting me and doing this and doing that? Sometimes when they try to bring you down or they tell you, tone it down a little bit. It's not because they're trying to shrink your vision or they don't believe in you. They're trying to maybe prevent you from biting off more than you can chew. And it can happen. They're doing it out of love. Maybe you want to get a million-dollar loan, and they're thinking, oof, that's a bit much for something that you're not really sure is going to work. Have you tested it? Have you tried it? Have you ever done it before? They can ask you those questions, but those questions are coming out of love. Don't be quick to think, oh, they're trying to stifle my creativity, and they're trying to. You also have to think of yourself. Be honest with yourself. What kind of person are you? Because there are some family members, like I have some family members that have tried different businesses and ideas, and they'll have today they'll have one idea. Tomorrow they'll have another idea. The next day it's another idea. And they never have the patience to see it through. So maybe that's who you are, and they know you that they are trying to prevent you from making the same mistake that maybe you've been making. Sometimes I've also seen that they project their own fears. Maybe if they're people who struggle with finishing what they start, they want to project that onto you, like, oh, good luck. I think I saw this interview of Kevin Hart, the comedian, saying that his brother, of course, he was saying it jokingly and lovingly, that his brother was the most negative person. He told him that, hey, I want to build a house. Instead of buying a house, I'm just going to buy some land and build a house. And he said, my brother's first response was, good luck. You don't have the experience. And then he said, I had to laugh and tell him that I'm not the one building it. I'm going to hire some professionals that have done this many, many times and they're going to build my home for me. So sometimes, because we are psychological beings, emotional beings, we tend to project our fears onto someone. Not because they're not worthy or not because they did something wrong, but maybe because of our own failures. So it's the same thing with your family. Sometimes it's maybe fear of the unknown. If you're planning maybe a big change, you want to change careers, you want to move to a new city, a new country, and say you're the breadwinner, they don't want you to do anything that's going to threaten not only your own stability, but even the stability of the entire family. So they're going to say, hey, hold on, wait, wait a second, maybe think this through. It's not necessarily that they don't believe in you, but they just want to make sure that you're doing it the right way. People can be resistant to change. That's very normal. We call it inertia, is the resistance of a body to stop moving if it was moving or to start, to get into motion if it was stationary. So you have to understand all these different attributes that make up what we call a human being. When it comes to, I would say, spiritual calling, you have to be really strong. Because I've learned from my own personal experience, only you know and only you understand exactly what God is saying to you. Because it's exactly that. It's spiritual. He transfers that from his spirit to you, the spirit. And it's difficult to even begin to explain to someone the experiences that you've had in the night. Hey, I had this dream. I want you to be as excited as I am, or have this feeling, or the Lord whispered this to me. It's a very difficult thing to convey to someone who's outside that bubble.
Boundaries That Guard Your Focus
SPEAKER_00So now we're coming to the practical steps that I was talking about. I like to bridge the gap between dogma, scripture, and practical living. What's going on on the ground? I don't want to impose scripture on people, on human behavior, and just say, because scripture says this, do this, because I need to give you a practical way of how you're going to apply that in your life. And we've already established that our Lord Jesus went through this. His own family, his brothers. I can imagine it was so painful for him when his own brothers were. Mocking him. If you go to the book of John, in the book of Mark that we just read, his mother perhaps was not uh mocking him, but she was trying to kind of restrict him in some way. And he is our ultimate example of successfully carrying out your mission. Because as a believer, what you want is to do what you were sent to do to the best of your ability. So there's no harm in us learning from him and understanding how he dealt with unbelief, not only from his family, but from his community. The first thing that I discovered is that he had a way of redefining what family meant. Who is your family? And it can seem very harsh, but there's a passage in Mark chapter 3, verse 33, maybe through 35, he says, Who are my brothers? When they said to him, Your mother and your brothers are waiting for you outside, and he had this crowd of people waiting to hear from him. He said, Who are my mother and my brothers? Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother. One thing I want you to understand is shared blood does not mean shared vision. Just because you are related, it does not mean they're always on the same page with you as far as where you're trying to go. And that does not entail hate, like you now hate each other or they're jealous of you. It may be the case, but I'm just saying, don't rush to think that. When Jesus' biological family couldn't support his calling, he intentionally found and built a chosen family. People that he knew, like, okay, they understand what I'm trying to do and they believe in me. His disciples, his friends, his followers. People who shared like a shared spiritual DNA with him. And they supported his mission. He never lacked supporters. And none of those supporters initially were his family. These were people who had been impacted by his ministry. And like I said before, it sounds harsh and it sounds like perhaps it's wayward, it's wayward advice for someone to give you. But I'm saying we're looking at the example of Jesus. He didn't hate his family by no means. He did not hate them. But in that moment, he refused to let their titles, maybe his mom, his sister, and brothers, he said, I'm not going to let their titles or their relationship to me give them automatic leverage, so to speak, to sabotage my calling. I won't let it happen. I love you, mom, I love you, sis, I love you, dad, I love you. But as far as my calling and my purpose, I'm not going to allow you to interfere. Are you bold enough to do that? Because that's what separates a visionary from a mere follower. Are you able to protect the vision that God gave to you? If you read some of these stories of people who built, or disruptors or inventors, people who built something lasting, a lasting legacy, they had to make such tough decisions. Look at the example right here of our Lord Jesus Christ. He had to almost strip them of their power to control his day-by-day movings, his mundane activities. He said, I'm not going to give you that power. And he changed the definition of closeness. He said, You who are here listening to me and supporting, you are my brothers, you are my sisters, you are my mother. So don't think because you're related to me, I'm going to leave my calling to come and attend to you. In a nutshell, like I said, proximity does not equal access. It's a rule that you need to set, a boundary rule. And it's not for the faint-hearted. It's not for people who don't have real dreams, real goals, real visions. It's for people who are unbended in their pursuit of whatever purpose that God has given to them.
Identity Built On God’s Voice
SPEAKER_00Another thing I learned when I was studying, going through the scripture, is that he based his identity on the Father, on God Himself. I have so many moments when people doubt me. I know when I first started my journey to faith as an adult, being a woman and looking a sign of uh a certain way made a lot of people skeptical about my love for him and my my calling. They saw me as something that I was not. Maybe you like dressing up and you like, you know, hair and makeup and but it still doesn't negate what's on the inside of me. I had to really look deep inside of me. What did God say to me? What is my relationship with him? What does he think of me? What does he say to me? What does he whisper to me in the night? What does he say to me in my heart? What does he impress in me as a spirit? And I had to ignore the outside noise of people who thought something superficial of me. And I had to really go back into the God that I knew, into my identity. And if you look at Mark chapter 1, we're really focusing on the book of Mark today, verse 10 to 11. This is the baptism of our Lord when he went to John the Baptist. It says, immediately, this was after his baptism, immediately coming out of the water, he saw the heavens opening and the spirit like a dove descending upon him, and a voice came out of the heavens. In you I am well pleased. You can never beat such a word. If I had a recording of every time that the Lord spoke to me, in fact, I have some clips of whether I received personal prophecies or scriptures that the Lord used to speak to me about my identity, the things that he has said to me, impressed upon my heart, I write them down and I recall those things. Whenever I'm in a situation that could make me vulnerable to self-doubt, I always refer back to those times. Sometimes I don't even have to do it. The Holy Spirit reminds me. And he says, No, remember when I spoke to you that day, I still mean that. Are you able to go back to those moments? Because if you have a vision, you have to trust that it's God Himself who gave you that vision. Don't doubt that. If you wake up in the middle of the night losing sleep, thinking, Oh, how am I going to accomplish this? If you cannot shake it, that's a supernatural thing. That's not normal. You have to know that it's coming from the realm of the spirit. These are ideas that are hanging, and you have been given access to them. And it's only Him, His Spirit, that can give you access to such realms. So don't let anyone steal that from you. Always revert back to your Eureka moment. Go back to the inception of the idea. Remember the feeling that you had. Remember that excitement that you had when you got the idea for that vision, when you got that vision, when you got that business idea, when you decided to pursue something. If you know who you are in the Lord, and that is God who has given me that vision, do everything you can to stay grounded in that. Write it down, read scriptures, listen to hymns, things that affirm who you are in the Lord. That's going to be so helpful. You know what Jesus did to even know and cement the idea of his identity. He knew every prophecy concerning himself and his assignment. He knew what the scripture said about him. He knew Isaiah 53 that spoke about, he knew every scripture that spoke about his calling and his purpose. So when his family called him crazy and people didn't believe in him, and the the religious leaders were trying to persecute him and execute him, it says in Isaiah 53, verse 3, he was despised and rejected by mankind. So to him, instead of thinking, oh my gosh, why is my family treating me this way? My community, he knew, yes, I'm right on track. If people are hating me, if people are not understanding me, that means I'm on track because the prophecy about my life says that they're not going to like me. They're going to despise me and they're going to reject me. So, in the same way, do you know prophecies about your life? I just thought about this one. This is Psalm 60, Psalm 69, verse 8. He says, I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother's children. Can you handle that for the sake of your vision? Are you strong enough to say, you know what, I'm not going to have any friends because people are going to think I'm crazy, I'm eccentric, I have these weird tendencies. But for the sake of my vision and my calling, I'm going to continue. If you're called into ministry, you're going to have to have retreats. You're going to have to stay in the word. You're going to have to be in prayer longer than others. And people are going to see, oh, you're weird. They're going to say, Oh, look at that weirdo. You're going to seem like you're, but are you strong enough to say, I will forego that. I will become a stranger, even to my mother's children. I will become a foreigner, even in my own family, for the sake of my calling. That is the exact posture that is going to make sure that you are successful in pursuing your vision. And Jesus also had other examples in scripture. So do the same. Look up examples of all the visionary people in scripture and how they overcame adversity. Joseph was called the dreamer. They would say, Oh, here comes the dreamer when he would be coming. The great prophet Jeremiah, whom we quote, was called the weeping prophet. He's always lamenting and weeping about something. So get encouragement from those that came before you, whether in scripture or even in your field. If you want to start a chemical company, you have many, many examples of people who've done that before you. If their stories are accessible, they're written and documented somewhere, watch them. Read them. Watch documentaries, read books about all the disruptors and pioneers. If there are none in your field, just find any inventor, any visionary that you know, and try to map out that life and see how they overcome that adversity. How did they overcome when their family and their community was not fully convinced of their vision?
Grace For Doubters Over Time
SPEAKER_00One thing that I love, because we're still believers at the end of the day, and I'm so inspired by the love of Jesus and his patience, and he's just showed that he was full of the Holy Spirit. It says in scripture that he allowed, he gave them space to change. He didn't force them to believe in him. Whenever they mocked him and they said, Why don't you go to the temple and show off your miracles? He wouldn't try to force them or to say, I'm going to call angels to burn all of you so you see that I'm the Messiah, or I'm going to. It was never a demonstration of who he was. But he allowed time to work its magic, so to speak. And when they were ready to see the truth, they saw the truth. He never permanently closed the door on the relationship with his family. He kept a healthy distance, of course. He loved them from afar, but he loved them. And I always encourage love, showing an abundance of love. There's nothing, you won't lose anything from loving people from afar. Initially, when he started his ministry, of course, they were very skeptical and they were mocking him. But if you look at after his resurrection, there was a shift in how people looked at him in his family and in his community. How they believed in him because they saw him being crucified, and yet they saw him in his glorified form. In the upper room when they were waiting for the Holy Spirit and they were praying in unity. It says Mary. It actually specifically said as I read it, Acts chapter 1, verse 14, it says, and Mary, the mother of Jesus, was right there in the upper room with the disciples, praying earnestly and waiting with them, with the rest of the early church. And ultimately, his brothers, we have James, Jude, they went on to become key leaders in the church. And they even wrote two books in your Bible that you have right now, the same brothers that were calling him crazy. He didn't shun them. After his resurrection, he gave them grace. Like, I know you didn't believe in me and you didn't see the vision. I didn't blame you. But here I am in this glorified state. You saw me dying, so you cannot deny my resurrection. I'm not a ghost. Touch me, feel me, see me. And that was enough for them to finally believe. And like I said before, don't blame people for believing, for not believing. Don't blame people for not believing in your vision. At its infancy stage. It's an infant for God's sakes. Don't go around being bitter against even your family because they cannot see what you see. Go back, stay grounded. Stay grounded in Him because He gave you the vision. Find scriptures, find material that is going to encourage you and keep you going. It's going to be difficult. I won't lie to you. But as they say, tough seasons don't last, but tough people do. I hope this section actually gives you hope. That's my whole goal. I don't want to just make you feel neglected or sit in and wallow in self-pity because your family doesn't believe in you. I actually want to give you hope that there's something you can do about it. And also that not everyone is out to get you. Your family is not just not believing in you because they hate you. Sometimes they love you so much they don't want you to make mistakes. They're trying to prevent you from spiraling. That's what they're trying to do. So you need to give people grace. Allow people to see. Some people may not see it before it materializes, but they might actually see it finally. Because at that stage, it's undeniable. There's nothing they can do to deny that you were right.
Prayer For Strength And Perspective
SPEAKER_00Allow me to pray for you today. Lord Jesus, I want to thank you so much for this lesson. We love you. And we get to learn from your experiences when you are here on earth. We see how you were rejected, but you still gave people grace. Finally, when the time came, you allowed people to see what you could see, and you gave them the opportunity to be part of your calling, part of your purpose, and part of your church. We ask, Lord, that you give us that same perspective when we're dealing with our families and our communities, when they fail at times to believe in us. We ask that you strengthen us to pursue our calling despite adversity, despite lack of support for our victim. I know that with your help, Holy Spirit, because you are our helper, we will be able to achieve our purpose and complete it and see it through to completion. In your name we pray. Amen.
