#21 - When Religion Is Worthless | James 1:26
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
James just said: be doers of the Word.
Now he exposes the easiest place to fake obedience — your mouth.
Because speech is where spirituality gets tested in real time. You can manage behavior in public, but you cannot hide what spills out under pressure.
And James says something blunt:
If you think you’re religious but you don’t control your tongue… your religion is useless.
Empty. Fruitless. Without substance.
In this episode, we unpack three truths:
- Your tongue reveals your true devotion — Your speech is the diagnostic tool of your spiritual maturity.
- Unchecked words cancel out loud worship — If your words contradict your worship, something is off.
- Self-deception is the real danger — Ignoring your speech leads to a false sense of spiritual growth.
Because redeemed rebels don’t just speak about Jesus — they sound like Him.

SpeakerThis podcast is for the ones who know that we're rescued, but also know that we're resent, saved by grace, sent to live differently. We're not rebelling against God, we're rebelling against everything that keeps us from Him. We'll talk faith, identity, purpose, leadership, and what it really looks like to follow Jesus in a loud and noisy world. We'll dissect scripture, we'll exposite it, we'll grow, and we'll stretch our faith. Welcome to the Daily Rebel. Alright, alright. Welcome back to the Daily Rebel, episode 21. Uh, we're about to dive back into the book of James. James chapter 1, our text for the week will be James chapter 1, verse 26 through chapter 2, verse 13. So let's get into it. Verse 26. If anyone thinks he is religious without controlling his tongue, his religion is useless, useless, and he deceives himself. Verse 27. Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world. So here's the text, verse 26, we're going to look at today. If anyone thinks he is religious without controlling his tongue, his religion is useless, and he deceives himself. So let's set this moment up. James just said this. He says in verse 22, 21, 22, be doers of the word, and I exposes the easiest place to fake obedience, your mouth. Because speech is where spirituality gets tested in real time. You can manage behavior in public, you cannot hide what spills out under pressure. And James says nothing something very, very blunt. And as we know, that's James Forte, pulls no punches. He says, if you think you're religious, but you don't control your tongue, your religion is worthless. It's useless. That word means empty, fruitless, without substance. That's that's not mild, it's devastating. So what's James is that what is he actually saying? Well, if anyone thinks, the text says, if anyone thinks, James starts with this assumption. This person believes they're spiritually solid and they see themselves as devoted, faithful, they're serious about God, but there's a disconnect. They don't brittle their tongue. The word brittle is like putting reins on a horse. You don't eliminate the horse's power. You you you govern it. And James is not saying never speak. He's saying if your speech is uncontrolled, your spirituality is unverified. It's not real. It's not bona fide. It's not true. And then he drops the hammer. He deceives himself, not others, himself. Self-deception is the most dangerous deception that eventually leads to other deception because you don't know that you're wrong. So let me give y'all three points. Number one, your tongue, write this down. Your tongue reveals your true devotion. You don't need a theology test to measure maturity. Listen to someone long enough under stress, under correction, under inconvenience. What comes out? Gossip? Is it sarcasm, criticism, bitterness, self-righteousness? James is saying your tongue is the diagnostic tool. Redeemed rebels don't just monitor behavior, we monitor our speech. And again, like I've been telling y'all this whole time, I'm talking to myself right now. So let me give y'all some practical handles, man. Replay your last conflict. What did you do? What did your tone sound like? If you're like me this morning, um yelling at my three-year-olds for being three-year-olds, yeah, that that that wasn't good. When I replay my last conflict, it doesn't sound very religious or even spiritual. Track how often you criticize versus encourage. If you were to out, if you were to weigh out your encouragement versus your discouragement, what would it look like? And ask somebody you trust. Do my words build or bruise? And I love what Joby Martin often asks is when you walk into the house, when you walk in a room, does peace go with you or does conflict and chaos? So number one, your tongue reveals your true devotion. Number two, unchecked words cancel out loud worship. Hear that? Unchecked words cancel out loud worship. You can sing passionately in service and look spiritual. You can pray eloquently and have sophisticated, incredible words, post scripture online and still have empty religion. If Monday's words contradict Sunday's worship, James says, hey man, something is off. And see, God is not impressed by the volume of your worship. He's looking for alignment. He's looking for your heart posture. Alignment between confession and conversation, worship and words and praise and posture. So before you speak, you need to ask, would Jesus sign his name to this sentence? And sometimes we have a lot of jerks out there that just say, Well, I'm just speaking the truth. Well, sometimes you could be speaking jerk language. Lower your tone before raising your voice. Again, that's preaching to myself. Sometimes I think my tone wears authority and raising my and it doesn't. I need to lower my turn tone. I need to stop raising my voice. Practice silence when emotions spike. Sometimes holiness sounds like restraint. So number one, your tongue reveals your true devotion. Um, number two, unchecked words cancel out loud worship. But number three, self-deception is the real danger. Self-deception is the real danger. The most terrifying part of this verse isn't even the word useless religion. It's deception. You think you're growing while your tongue proves you're not. You believe, you can believe you're mature while your works expose immaturity. So James is saying if you ignore your speech, you're lying to yourself. And Redeemed Rebels, we we gotta learn how to invite correction. We don't need to defend patterns, we need to confront them. We need to invite people, almost have like a board of directors around us that hear us talk and can call us out on the words that we speak out of our mouths that are especially discouraging. So look, Confess your speech because it sins quickly especially sins of the tongue.. I know for me, when I get alone and I'm praying and I'm I'm seeking the Lord, a lot of times I'm like, Lord, forgive me what I said, forgive me for yelling at my spouse, forgive me for yelling at my twins, forgive me for being an utter jerk. What about apologizing specifically, not vaguely? Like, call it for what it is and pray daily, Lord, uh man, brittle my tongue. Because spiritual growth is not measured by how inspired you feel. It's not measured by how many t-shirts have Jesus' name on it. It's not even it's not even measured by how many verses you have on your Instagram post and you post in a picture, you drinking coffee while reading your Bible. It's measured by how you govern your words by the power of the Holy Spirit. So if your faith is real, it will show up in your speech. Not perfectly, not prog, but but but absolutely progressively, because useless religion talks spiritual and lives careless. But redeemed rebels, man, we put rain on our words. We submit them to the spirit. We don't speak about Jesus, we sound like him. We don't just speak about Jesus, we sound like him. And if your tongue is uncontrolled, James says it's time to stop performing and it's time to start aligning. We'll see you tomorrow. Day two, Daily Rebel. Thank you for listening to today's episode. Before you go, if you want to help other people be equipped to be redeemed rebels, give us a follow and share it around with your friends. We'll see you next time.
