You can obey God externally and still resist Him internally.

In this episode, we break down Jonah 3 and expose the danger of reluctant obedience. Jonah finally goes to Nineveh—but chapter 4 reveals his heart never fully moved. This is a warning for men who are doing the right things outwardly while still resisting surrender inwardly.

We unpack three gritty truths:

  1. Reluctance obeys outwardly but resists inwardly — you can do what God says and still not want what God wants
  2. Reluctance delays what God already said — delayed obedience reveals a resistant heart
  3. Reluctance misses the heart of God — obedience without compassion still misses the point

If you’ve been dragging your feet spiritually, resisting what God already made clear, or obeying without surrender, this episode will challenge you to stop delaying and follow God with your whole heart.

Welcome \\ Daily Rebel For Men Mission

SPEAKER_00

So step up, man. Let's lock in and let's get to work. Men, welcome back. Here we go. We're on episode three of the Jonah Warning for Men. You know, week one, we talked about how we can run from God. We can run from obedience when God is calling us to do something extraordinary, something epic. And a lot of us men, man, we run from responsibility and we don't reject passivity. We don't accept responsibility. And that's what Jonah did. We we discovered that he was running when the opposite of what Jesus did was not run from the Lord. He ran to him. He ran to his father. He obeyed. Last week we talked about how man Jonah showed us what religion looks like. This kind of repentance that looks legit, but it's also very counterfeit, like talking about other people's idols. You don't really see him say, Lord, I forgive me for what I did, forgive me for running. And then he spit out of the whale. And pretty much that's how the Lord delivered him. It's like, man, you're going to be spit out in exactly what you have been, and that's vomit. Like he's I'm going to cover you in the vomit of the whale. And he spits him out. And then here's what happens in Jonah

Jonah Chapter 3

SPEAKER_00

chapter three. Is we see that Jonah finally obeys. And we're going to get there. But let me ask, let me let me tell y'all this.

Doing the Right Thing Without Wanting To

SPEAKER_00

Some of you are doing the right thing, but you still don't want to. You're showing up, you're obeying, you're moving forward, but your heart isn't in it. And God, listen, I need you to understand, y'all need to understand this.

God Isn't Just After Your Alliance, He's After Your Alignment

SPEAKER_00

God isn't just after you after your compliance, he's after your alignment. Because you can obey externally and still resist internally. See, so we're again Jonah already ran. He's already resisted. He already got swallowed up. And now he's about to get a second chance. So

Jonah’s Second Chance

SPEAKER_00

look, God speaks. He says, the word of the Lord, this is Jonah chapter 3, 1 through 2. The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time. Get up, go to the great city of Nineveh and preach the message that I tell you. So listen, I need you to understand something about

Second Time Grace

SPEAKER_00

second time grace. Don't miss that. The text says, and underline this, he came to Jonah a second time. The word of the Lord came to the disobedient prophet a second time. You know what that is? That's grace. That's another chance. God is a God of second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth chances and so on. What's

God Did Not Replace Jonah, He Recommissioned Him

SPEAKER_00

cool about this moment is God did not replace Jonah, y'all. He recommissioned him. So the text continues. So Jonah, verse 3, Jonah got up, went to Nineveh according to the Lord's command. Now, Jonah, that's what we should have heard the first time, bro. That's obedience. Jonah did what he should have done the first time. He went, but don't stop at chapter 3 because listen, chapter 4 explains chapter 3. Jonah obeyed externally, but chapter 4 reveals that his heart was

The Real Problem: A Resistant Heart

SPEAKER_00

still resistant. So let me make it clear. He went, but he didn't want to go. He obeyed, but he didn't agree. He moved, but his heart never did. Jonah chapter 3, verse 4 says, In 40 days, Nineveh will be demolished. And so Jonah went through the town. In 40 days, Nineveh will be demolished. So he preaches the message that God wants him to preach. Now let this land. Listen, no explanation of mercy, no invitation to return, no expression of God's heart. Now again, these seven words show us what they what the original writer said Jonah said. It could have been those seven words. Maybe he talks about compassion and mercy. I mean, he talks about in chapter four where he's like, Lord, I knew that you were merciful and you were compassionate. But listen, the text shows obedience, but chapter four reveals motivation. And here's what's wild.

In Seven Words Revival Broke Out

SPEAKER_00

In seven words, revival broke out across an entire city. I mean, people were the king, the leader was like, hey, we're gonna sit in ashes, we're gonna tear our robes, we're gonna shave our heads, and the whole place repented. But listen, half-hearted obedience still

The Three Points

SPEAKER_00

reveals a divided heart. So let me give y'all three truths about this word that we're talking about in this episode: reluctance. Number one is

#1 - Reluctance Obeys Outwardly but Resists Inwardly

SPEAKER_00

reluctance obeys outwardly, but it resists inwardly. Again, Jonah obeyed. That's real. His heart was aligned. Chapter 4 once again proves he was actually angry at the Lord for showing mercy. You can do what God says, men, and still not want what God wants. Man, you're you're doing the right things, right? You're showing up, leading, obeying outwardly, but inside. Maybe some of you are still resisting. You're still frustrated, you're still not surrendered. So reluctance obeys outward, but it can still resist inward. Number two is reluctance

#2 - Reluctance Delays What God Already Said

SPEAKER_00

delays what God already said. Jonah didn't obey at first. He ran. Now he obeys, but he's been pressured, right? He's been, he got tossed overseas after he told the men to toss him. He gets swallowed by a well. Of course he wants out of that well belly. It's like, all right, well, I'm gonna obey. But chapter four again shows us that his heart was resistant. Only after consequences did he obey. And listen, delayed obedience reveals a resistant heart. Men, listen, how many things has God already told you to do? Like, how many things that he told you to do that you waited until things got hard, consequences showed up, you had no other option. And here's the truth: you didn't lack clarity, you lack surrender, which brings me to number three.

#3 - Reluctance Misses the Heart of God

SPEAKER_00

Reluctance misses the heart of God. Jonah delivers the message. Hey, in seven days, Nineveh's gonna be overturned, but he doesn't reflect God's heart. And chapter four makes that undeniable in the text uh in

Jonah 4:2 Reveals Everything

SPEAKER_00

chapter four, verse two, which we'll get to chapter four next week. But he says, I knew that you were a gracious and compassionate of compassionate God and one who relents from sending disaster. Y'all, that's it. That's why he ran. Not confusion, not fear, it was reluctance. He didn't want them to receive grace. And I feel like sometimes we're like that as men where we're just like, nah, they deserve that punishment. Nah, they deserve, and it's like, bro, he

He Obeyed The Command but Rejected Compassion

SPEAKER_00

obeyed the command, but he rejected the compassion. You ever been there? You've obeyed the Lord's command because I have to. It's kind of like a begrudging toddler, which I've got twin boys, I know. They walk away, they do what you ask them to do, but they didn't do it in their heart. They didn't they didn't do it because they actually wanted to please their father or do it because he's merciful and compassionate. They just did it to do it. So, men, you can obey God's instructions and still not love what he loves. Jonah went just like he should have the first time. But listen, he had a heart full of reluctance, even though he obeyed. So let me ask you this

Where Are You Obeying God and Resisting Him in Your Heart

SPEAKER_00

where are you obeying God but still resisting him in your heart? I want to give y'all three ways how men, how we

Three Ways Men Combat Reluctance

SPEAKER_00

can combat reluctance. Because reluctance doesn't just disappear, y'all. It has to be confronted. Here are

(1) Increase Your Love for Jesus

SPEAKER_00

three things. Number one, increase your love for Jesus. See, reluctance grows when love grows cold. Because when you love him, you don't drag your feet, you don't delay obedience, you you don't negotiate his commands. You won't obey quickly if you don't love deeply. You won't obey quickly if you don't love him deeply. When grace, listen, here's the thing about grace, because remember, he got a second chance. When grace gives you a second chance, it should change you from the inside out, push you into second gear, and remind you that God's grace is giving second chances to the people around you. You got a responsibility to understand that if God is giving you second chances, then other people are owed your obedience to share with them that he also gives them. But that only happens when you increase your love for the Lord. So spend time with him, not just around him. If you're just going to church and you're just listening to your pastor and your favorite podcast and you're not diving into the word yourself, you're just spending time

Don't Just Spend Time Around Him, Spend Time With Him

SPEAKER_00

around him, not with him. Ooh. Stay in his word until your heart is stirred. Remember what he has done for you. Increase the love of the Lord in your heart. Number

(2) Decrease Your Tolerance of Sin

SPEAKER_00

two, decrease your tolerance of sin. Reluctance is led by compromise. The more you tolerate your sin, that secret in your closet that's trying to come out, what you tolerate, listen, will eventually control you. The more you tolerate sin, the more you resist obedience. So

Stop Excusing What God Already Called Sin

SPEAKER_00

listen, stop excusing what God has already called sin. Cut off what feeds your flesh. Don't manage sin, murder it. Which

#3 - Act On What God Already Said

SPEAKER_00

leads me to number three. Act on what God already said. Can I be real? Some things you don't need more prayer over. Some things you don't need

Somethings You Don't Need to Pray About

SPEAKER_00

to pray over. You don't have to pray about making disciples. It's already a command. You don't have to kill, you don't have to pray about killing sin. God's already told us to. Literally, Paul says multiple times in the gospels, uh, in his in his letters, in when he talks about the gospel, is to put sin to death. So you don't need another confirmation. You need immediate obedience. You don't need to pray about forgiving a person. You don't need to pray about cutting a habit. You don't need to pray about leading your home. You don't need to pray about telling the truth. God has already spoken those through his word. So obey the last thing he told you. So listen, y'all. Redeemed rebels, men, I need you to understand something.

Don't Just Obey The Will of God, Want the Will of God

SPEAKER_00

Don't just obey externally, align internally. Don't just do the will of God, want the will of God. Stop delaying, stop doing the minimum, stop resisting internally and start following God with your whole heart. And I guarantee you, you won't run from responsibility, you'll run to the feet of the Father. You won't say and sound super religious and sophisticated. You'll actually be a repentant person that's not counterfeit. And don't be reluctant towards the Lord. Start following him with everything you have. Increase your love for him, decrease your tolerance for sin, and act on the last thing God told you to do in his word. Men, I love you. And we will conclude our study in Jonah next Saturday here on the Daily Rebel for Men. Love you. That's your Daily Rebel
