You can obey God’s commands while still resisting God’s heart.

In Episode 4 of the Jonah Warning for Men series, we walk through Jonah 4 and expose the deepest issue in Jonah’s life—not his feet, but his heart.

Nineveh repents. Revival breaks out. And Jonah gets angry.

Why?

Because Jonah loved grace when it rescued him but resisted grace when it rescued people he disliked.

This episode confronts:

  •  self-righteousness
  •  spiritual pride
  •  resistance to compassion
  •  and the danger of obeying externally while remaining hardened internally.

Because redeemed rebels don’t just obey God externally. They align with Him internally.

THREE GRITTY TRUTHS

  1.  RESISTANCE FORGETS THE GRACE YOU NEEDED
  2.  RESISTANCE WANTS MERCY FOR SELF, JUSTICE FOR OTHERS
  3.  RESISTANCE REVEALS A HEART OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH GOD

Just truth that hits your life where it actually counts. Because your faith isn't proven by what you say. It's proven by how you show up and live. So step up, man. Let's lock in and let's get to work. Yo, what's good, man? Welcome back to the Daily Rebel for Men, and we are closing out the Jonah warning for men today. And I do realize there's one more Saturday in May. So next Saturday, y'all gonna get a special edition uh for y'all before we dive into our next man series. And so listen, the whole

Series Recap: Jonah Warning for Men

SPEAKER_00

series has been a warning to men. Hey, don't be like Jonah, be like Jesus. Yes, Jonah, man, he gets uh Jesus talks about Jonah in the in the Gospels. Jonah, he talks about the sign of Jonah, the three days in the in the fish, and then how he uh you know got delivered from there. I mean, it's not that Jonah is just a complete deadbeat. Man, Jonah is a redeemed dude by the Lord, but we see many things he did that men do not need to emulate. And so listen, it's not about a fish. Jonah's not always about a fish. When I was a kid, it was like Jonah and the whale, Jonah and the whale. One, it's a fish, not a whale. And it's about a man who knew the Lord and still resisted him. And so if we recap the the warnings for men, well, the first week we talked about running, how we need to stop running from responsibility. Jonah, Jonah runs from what God clearly said. We talked about religion. We need to stop pretending we're right with the Lord. We Jonah sounded spiritual in his repentance, but he never truly repented. And also, last week we talked about reluctance. I mean, we need to stop dragging our feet in obedience. Jonah obeys externally, but chapter four, what we're about to look at, reveals his heart was still resistance. And so today we're talking about resistance. Stop resisting the heart of God

You Can Obey God and Still Resist His Heart

SPEAKER_00

because now God finally exposes the deepest issue. Not Jonah's feet, Jonah's heart. Not his actions, but why he did what he did. So, men, listen, you can obey God's commands while still resisting God's heart. That's Jonah chapter four. He preached the message. Hey, Nineveh, in in in in however many days, so in 40 days, Jesus is gonna throw or God's gonna throw this place upside down. The city repented, revival broke out, and Jonah hated

Jonah Angry at Revival

SPEAKER_00

it. Look at Jonah chapter four, verse one. It says, Jonah was greatly displeased and became furious. Let that sink in. An entire city returns to the Lord, and the prophet gets angry. Here's the real issue, man. The phrase greatly displeased, it is very strong language, and Hebrew it literally carries the idea that this was evil to Jonah. Listen, did you hear that? It was wrong in Jonah's eyes. He's essentially saying, God, what you did was evil. Are you serious? What did Jonah call evil? God showing mercy. That's the exposure. Jonah wanted grace for himself,

The Real Issue in Jonah’s Heart

SPEAKER_00

but he was okay having judgment for others. And look at verse 2. It says this, I knew that you're a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in faithful love. Men, don't miss this. Jonah doesn't hate God's power. He hates God's compassion towards people he dislikes. Is that convicting any of you right now? Are some of you right wingers or left wingers in the political realm thinking about somebody you strongly dislike and hate? Is somebody in a denomination, whether you're Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Pentecostal, or non-denime, even though it's a denomination, are you are you dogging the other denominations? Listen, man, you can know the character of God and still resist his heart. So, men, let me give y'all

The Three Points

SPEAKER_00

three truths based on resistance. Number

#1 - RESISTANCE FORGETS THE GRACE YOU NEEDED

SPEAKER_00

one, resistance forgets the grace that you needed. Jonah forgot, hey, bro, you ran. You rebelled, and you still needed mercy. You see, self-righteousness begins when you forget how much grace saved you. Men, some of you are harder on others than God was on you. You expect patience for yourself, mercy for yourself, understanding for yourself. But for others, you just want judgment, distance, and punishment. We play the victim. We we do. You didn't earn grace, men. You received it. So resistance forgets the grace that you needed. That's what Jonah did.

#2 - RESISTANCE WANTS MERCY FOR SELF, JUSTICE FOR OTHERS

SPEAKER_00

Number two, resistance wants mercy for self and justice for others. You see, Jonah loved grace when it rescued him from drowning. But he hated grace when it rescued Nineveh from their impending doom. Immature men celebrate grace for themselves while resenting it for others. They get what they got what they deserved. See, this shows up when you dis someone you dislike changes. Someone gets restored after failure. Someone receives forgiveness that you don't think they deserve. If grace was fair, I got news for you. You wouldn't have received it either. Because we're all broken, messed up, jacked up sinners in the hands of the Lord. And

#3 - RESISTANCE REVEALS A HEART OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH GOD

SPEAKER_00

number three, hey, resistance reveals a heart out of alignment with God. You see, God loved people that Jonah hated. That's the tension. Jonah

Obeying Externally While Resisting Internally

SPEAKER_00

obeyed the assignment, but resisted the compassion behind it. So listen, you can obey God's commands while still resisting God's heart. Jonah wanted God's mission completed without God's mercy attached. Did you hear that? Jonah wanted

Mission Completed Without Mercy Attached

SPEAKER_00

God's mission completed without God's mercy attached. I will obey and I will go share the gospel, but hey, please don't give them mercy. So man, you can preach truth, lead spiritually, serve publicly, obey externally, and still not love people the way God does. Listen, God, see, this happens in the text. God grows a

The Plant Moment Explained

SPEAKER_00

plant over Jonah. He actually, in Jonah's anger, he gives him shade, he gives them comfort and release. Again, more grace. And then God removes it. And Jonah loses his mind over a plant. And I ain't gonna lie, I probably would too, because it was probably hot as Hades. Like I get mad when I walk out in May and I start feeling humidity, and I'm like, hell has broken loose in Louisiana. But listen, Jonah loses his mind over a plant while showing zero compassion for thousands of people that God was gonna destroy. Look at chapter 4, verse 10 through 11. It says, And the Lord said, You cared about the plant which you did not labor over and did not grow. It appeared in a night and perished in a night. So may I not care about the great city of Nineveh, which has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot distinguish between their right and their left, as well as many animals? So, what's God exposing here? Jonah

Comfort Over Compassion

SPEAKER_00

cared more about his comfort, his shade, his preference, and his convenience than people far from the Lord. And God confronts him. Jonah, your heart is out of alignment with mine. You will never carry the heart of God, you will never carry the heart of God if comfort matters more than compassion. It won't you will never carry his heart, man, if comfort matters more than compassion. Man, I remember when I was a sophomore junior in high school, man. This this actually just hit my head. This is right off the dome. I remember, and this is small, but I remember, man, I was working at a place called Cabfish Cab and I just got done, man. I had worked like two and at three full days for the first time in a while. I was tired, I was hungry, and I realized here's what's crazy. I was at a restaurant that serves food. I remember my dad, I just my dad gave me a few dollars to grab something on the way home. And sometimes, you know, you in the place that you work, especially if a restaurant, you don't really want to eat the food there all the time. But I remember I was getting in my car and I had cash in my hand, and and I and I didn't want to put it in my pocket because man, my my my my jeans were nasty, bro, sweaty from being in the back, washing dishes, busting tables. And this dude comes up to me, man, he was sweaty, and he was like, bro, my car needs a little bit of gas. I'm trying to get to this place so they can fix something on it or whatever. And I and I want y'all to know, like, in that moment, like he he was serious. I believed him. And I understand this was also about the time my faith was taken off. I was fired up about the Lord. I was always talking about serving and loving people. And I and I and I lowered the money and I proceeded to tell him I didn't have any. And he called my bluff. He looked right at me, he goes, bro, he goes, I literally just saw you hide your money away from me. Yo, I had I think $12. I had a restaurant that was sitting right there that I know the owners well. If I walked in there and say, hey, I'm hungry, can I have some food? I got a dad that if I was like, hey, I gave my money to a homeless man or a broke man or somebody that helped his car, he would have given it to me in a heartbeat. I had all the provision I needed, and in that moment, I cared more about my comfort and me getting my meal than the compassion I should have had on this man. God, I remember that was almost 20 years ago. And I bring that story up because, dude, I had here's what's crazy. I ended up just giving him a few dollars. It wasn't enough for gas. I could have gave him it all, and I still would have been taken care of. I care more about my comfort than compassion over this man. But listen, man, here we go. How do men

How Do Men Alignment With The Heart of God

SPEAKER_00

align with the heart of the Lord? So in that moment, even as a Christian, as a follower who's been preaching on stages, even as a high schooler, was not compassionate towards somebody he should have been. Number one, let me give y'all a few things. How do we align ourselves with the heart of the Lord? Number one, care more

Alignment One: Care More About People Than Personal Comfort

SPEAKER_00

about people than your personal comfort. Jonah, mourn a plant, but not lost people. Men, you know your heart is drifting when comfort matters more than calling, convenience matters more than compassion, and your preference matters more than people. You need to start asking the question Who around me is far from God? Who have I ignored? Who needs truth and grace from me? The heart of God moves towards people, not just personal comfort. Number two,

Alignment Two: Remember How Patient God Has Been With You

SPEAKER_00

remember how patient God has been with you. God reminds Jonah, you didn't you didn't grow that plant, meaning you didn't earn this. Grace was never something you deserved, which means you stop acting superior, you stop looking down on people, you stop withholding grace from others. Men, never forget who you were, what God forgave, and how patient he's been with you. Men transformed by grace should become men who extend it.

Alignment Three: Develop Compassion Before Criticism

SPEAKER_00

Number three, develop compassion before criticism. God points Jonah towards Nineveh, a hundred and twenty thousand spiritually lost people, and Jonah only sees enemies. See, resistance hardens your heart, compassion softens it. Before criticizing people, pray for them. Understand where they're at and their brokenness. Remember, eternity is real. When you see people through the heart of God, you stop viewing them as interruptions and you start viewing them as souls. Jonah, so here's number four. Let God's

Alignment Four: Let God’s Mercy Change How You See People

SPEAKER_00

mercy change how you see people. Jonah knew theology but didn't reflect God's mercy. The goal isn't just knowing scripture, men. The goal is becoming more like God. So ask daily, God, how can I uh how can I help me love what you love? Break my pride, give me compassion for people. A hard heart can know truth and still miss God completely. So Jonah started his story running from God openly, but chapter four reveals something worse. He resisted God internally the whole time. So where are you resisting the heart of God? Who have you stopped loving? Who have you written off? Where has pride hardened your compassion? Because Redeem Rebels, listen, we don't just obey God externally, we align with him internally. We love what he loves, we pursue what he pursues, we extend the grace they have received. The greatest danger isn't running from God openly, it is resisting him eternally.

Stop Resisting The Heart of God

SPEAKER_00

So stop resisting, stop hardening your heart, and let the grace that saved you reshape how you see others. In other words, don't be Jonah, be Jesus. Men, see you next Saturday. That's your Daily Rebel Saturday
