#92 | What Then Shall We Say? | Romans 8:31 | The Great 8

Have you ever read something so incredible that you just sat there... speechless?

That's exactly where Paul is in Romans 8:31. After eight chapters of unpacking our sin, God's grace, justification, the Holy Spirit, adoption, suffering, assurance, and God's sovereignty, he pauses and asks one simple question:

"What then are we to say about these things?"

It's not just a transition. It's an invitation.

Paul isn't asking what we should do first. He's asking what we should say. Because before the gospel transforms your behavior, it transforms your perspective. Romans 8 isn't merely information to understand—it's truth that should leave us in awe of the God who saved us. 

Too often we become so familiar with grace that we stop marveling at it. We know the verses. We know the theology. But we've lost the wonder. Paul reminds us that healthy theology always produces heartfelt worship. The more you understand the gospel, the more amazed you become by Jesus.

In this episode, we unpack three powerful responses to God's grace:

1. Remember What God Has Done — Never lose your wonder. Gratitude grows wherever remembrance lives. Don't forget where Jesus found you or what He rescued you from.

2. Respond With Worship — The goal of theology isn't simply to make you smarter. It's to make you surrender. Truth should always move your heart toward worship.

3. Rest In What God Has Said — Your confidence isn't built on your circumstances. It's built on God's unchanging character. When life gets loud, preach the gospel to yourself.

Ultimately, everything Paul has written points to Jesus. He removed our condemnation. He fulfilled the Law. He sent the Spirit. He adopted us into God's family. He secured our future. The gospel isn't merely something to believe.

It's Someone to adore.

verse 31. And we're gonna be in the first part. It says, What then are we to say about these things? So Paul's asking questions. What then are we to say about these things? But even him asking these questions, he's actually making statements. So what then are we to say about these things? So have you ever finished reading something so incredible that you just sat there speechless? No words, no explanation, you just felt overwhelmed. Well, that's exactly where Paul is. For eight chapters, he's been unpacking our sin, God's grace, our justification, the Holy Spirit, our adoption, our suffering, our assurance, and God's sovereignty. And then he pauses, almost like he takes a deep breath and asks, What then shall we say about these things? Romans eight isn't just information, y'all. It's an invitation to not just to know God, but to stand in awe of him. And some of us know so much about him that we've forgotten to be amazed by him. When The Gospel Leaves You Speechless

only response left. Wonder is the birthplace of worship. So notice what Paul doesn't say. He says, he doesn't say, What shall we do? He asks, What shall we say? Because why? Because before the gospel changes your behavior, it changes your perspective. The phrase, these things points backward. Everything Paul has just taught, he's saying, after everything we've learned, how should we respond? So listen, good theology should always lead to greater doxology. Knowledge that never becomes worship has missed its destination. And throughout Romans 8, we've discovered no condemnation. We've discovered new life, a new mind, the Holy Spirit, adoption and prayer, hope, purpose, and security. And Paul is introducing a new subject. He's celebrating everything he just taught. It's as though he says, what else can possibly be said? Listen, the more you understand the gospel, the more amazed you become by grace. And I want, I want to say this as I've always said, you never graduate

You Never Graduate From the Gospel

from the gospel, you grow deeper into it. Listen, the cross, it never gets smaller. We just forget how big it really is. And the only proper response to God's grace is wholehearted worship. Let me give y'all

Point 1: Remember What God Has Done

three points. Number one, remember what God has done. Never lose your wonder. Paul intentionally pauses. Why? Because believers are forgetful. We quickly forget where we came from, what Christ rescued us from. He we quickly forget how much grace we've received. And one of the quickest ways to lose your joy is to lose your memory and take your eyes off the gospel. Remember, you were condemned, you're, but now you're forgiven. You were dead and now you're alive. You were an orphan and now you're adopted. So listen, gratitude,

Gratitude Grows Wherever Remembrance Lives

it grows wherever remembrance lives. Forgetfulness is often the first step towards spiritual apathy. You lose your fire long before you lose your faith. So let me ask you this. respond with worship. Truth should move your heart. Paul doesn't simply teach doctrine, he responds to it. Real theology, it doesn't produce arrogant,

Theology Should Lead To Doxology

stiff-necked pride, it produces awe and praise. The more clearly you see God's grace, the natural you'll worship because worship isn't emotional hype. It's a heart that is overwhelmed with truth. Theology isn't supposed to make you smarter, it's supposed to make you surrender. Doesn't mean you ain't gonna be smart from it, but the whole goal is surrender. The gospel isn't merely information, it's an invitation to worship. If your Bible study never becomes worship, you have completely missed the point. Because truth that never reaches your heart never changes your life. Listen, some of us need less scrolling and more staring at the Savior. And if truth never moves your heart, you're probably stopped marveling at grace. When grace becomes ordinary, your heart starts drifting. Has your relationship with Jesus become routine instead of remarkable? And worship naturally leads somewhere, which leads me to number three. Rest

Point 3: Rest In What God Has Said

in what God has said. I want you to know confidence grows from when you know the truth. Paul begins asking questions why? Because confident believers think differently. The truths of Roman 8 are meant to produce confidence and security, things like hope and assurance and peace. So listen, there ain't no condemnation. There's no abandonment, no wasted pain, no unanswered prayer, no broken promises, only grace, Christ, and hope. Your confidence is not built on your circumstances. It is 100% built on God's characters. So listen, I need you to understand that what then shall we say? Hey, listen, your feelings make terrible foundations. Feelings fluctuate, God's faithfulness doesn't. What shall we say? Don't let your emotions become your theology. The louder your problems become, the louder you need to preach the gospel to
