#96 | Who Can Accuse? | Romans 8:33 | The Great 8

Have you ever had someone bring up a mistake you thought was buried?

An old addiction. An old relationship. An old failure. An old version of you.

Maybe someone else has accused you. Maybe the enemy has accused you. Or maybe the loudest accusations are the ones you keep speaking over yourself.

"You'll never change."

"God's probably disappointed."

"You're still that person."

Romans 8:33 confronts every one of those lies with a courtroom question: "Who can bring an accusation against God's elect?" Paul isn't asking whether accusations will come. He knows they will. He's asking whether anyone can successfully overturn the verdict God has already declared over your life. The answer is an emphatic no.

From Romans 1 through Romans 8, Paul has been building toward this moment. Humanity stood guilty. Christ stood in our place. The Judge has already spoken. Justice has already been satisfied. The trial is over.

The enemy may still prosecute...

but he can't win the case.

In this episode, we unpack three powerful truths from Romans 8:33:

1. Accusations Are Real — Satan is the accuser. Before sin he tempts you. After sin he condemns you. His strategy hasn't changed, but his authority has.

2. God's Declaration Is Final — Justification isn't God pretending you never sinned. It's God declaring that Jesus already paid for your sin. There is no higher court than God.

3. Live Like The Case Is Closed — Stop living like a defendant trying to earn a verdict God has already declared. You're no longer standing before the Judge. You're sitting at the Father's table.

Ultimately, Jesus wasn't simply punished beside sinners. He was treated as the guilty One so guilty people could be declared righteous. Justice was satisfied. Mercy was released. Grace won.

• Whose voice has been louder than God's?
• Stop trying to earn a verdict Jesus already secured.
• The Judge has spoken. The cross has answered. The case is closed.

The Voices That Keep Bringing Up Your Past

have you ever had someone bring up a mistake you thought was buried, like an old failure, an old addiction, or even an old relationship, an older version of you? It's amazing how quick one accusation can make you feel like you've gone backward. And maybe someone else has accused you. Maybe the enemy has accused you. Maybe you're the one still accusing yourself. And here's what I've learned that accusations don't always sound loud. Sometimes they sound like your own thoughts. Things like you'll never change. God's probably disappointed in you. You're still the person that you used to be. You're too dirty. You failed way too many times. And when we and here's the thing, we tend to believe the loudest voice in the room. And Paul reminds us God's voice is louder than every accusation because God's verdict is final. And Paul knows exactly where our minds go. So after spending eight chapters explaining the gospel, he asks another question: Who

Who Can Bring Accusation?

can bring accusation against God's elect? Notice, Paul doesn't ask, will accusations come? Because here's the deal. They will. He asks, who can successfully bring charge that overturns that uh that what God has already declared? Like who can successfully bring it and overturn it? Here's the deal. The enemy may raise his voice, but he cannot reverse God's verdict. So real quick,

The Courtroom Of Romans

let me just remind you of the context. Romans has been building towards this courtroom from the very beginning. Romans 1, humanity stands guilty. Romans 2, you know, no one escapes God's justice. Every ver Romans 3, every mouth is stopped, everyone is guilty before the Lord. Romans 5, you know, Christ dies for sinners. Romans 6, sin's power is broken. In Romans 8, we see at the very beginning there's no condemnation. And now Paul asks, if God already justified you, who exactly thinks they can overturn God's ruling? The trial is over, the verdict has been already been read, and the judge has already spoken. And heaven doesn't retrial the people Jesus already redeemed. And Paul uses this word and cleo, a legal term meaning to bring formal charges or prosecute. Don't miss the courtroom injury imagery here. There is a judge, there's an accuser, there are charges, there is evidence, there is a verdict. But before the prosecution can finish speaking, the judge interrupts and he says, justified. One word, case closed. Paul doesn't say God overlooks your sin. He says God justifies sinners, and justice has already

The Real Judge and Justification

been satisfied. God isn't ignoring the evidence. God is pointing to the cross. The judge who knows every charge is the same judge who declared you righteous in Christ. So listen, no accusation is greater than God's declaration. Let me give y'all three points. Number one,

Point 1: Accusations Are Real

accusations are real. The enemy loves your past. If he can't steal your salvation, he'll try to steal your confidence. One of Satan's uh oldest names, again, is the accuser. Before he tempts you, he lies. After you sin, he condemns. Before sin, he whispers, go ahead. And after sin, he whispers, God can never love someone like you. He overpromises and he underdelivers. And his strategy never changes. Satan may still prosecute, but here's the deal: he just can't win the case anymore. Listen, conviction

Why are so many believers still living like defendants, constantly trying to impress a father who already adopted them? You're not standing in front of the bench anymore. You're sitting at the father's table. So listen, Jesus wasn't simply punished beside sinners. He was treated as though he were the sinner. So sinners could be treated as though they were righteous. I'm gonna say that again. That's the gospel. Jesus was treated as though he were the sinner. So sinners could be treated as though they were righteous. The judge stepped down, the son stepped in. Justice was satisfied. Mercy was released, and grace won. People may accuse you, your past may accuse you.
