If I asked you, "What does it mean to be justified?"

Most Christians would probably answer, "It means God forgave me."

That's true.

But it doesn't go far enough.

Forgiveness means your debt has been canceled. Justification means your status has been changed. God didn't simply erase your record—He declared you righteous. He didn't just remove your sin. He credited Christ's perfect righteousness to your account. That's why Romans 8:33 doesn't simply tell us we're forgiven. It tells us, "God is the one who justifies."

Paul uses the Greek word dikaioō—a courtroom term meaning to declare righteous, to pronounce innocent, to acquit. Picture standing before the Judge of all creation with every sin exposed and every failure known. Then the Judge slams the gavel and declares:

"Righteous."

Not because you earned it.

Not because you deserved it.

But because Jesus stood in your place.

In this episode, we unpack three powerful truths about justification:

1. The Verdict Has Already Been Declared — Stop living like you're still on trial. The Judge has already spoken. Your verdict is settled forever.

2. The Righteousness Isn't Yours—It's Christ's — Through the Great Exchange, your sin was credited to Christ, and His righteousness was credited to you. God accepts you because of Jesus, not because of your performance.

3. Live Like You've Been Declared Righteous — Stop introducing yourself by what Jesus already buried. Your identity is no longer your past. Your identity is justified.

Ultimately, the cross wasn't simply where Jesus forgave sinners. It was where He exchanged places with them. Your guilt became His. His righteousness became yours. Every accusation has already been answered at Calvary.

Final Application:

• How would your confidence change if you actually believed God already declared you righteous?
• How would your worship change?
• Your prayers?
• Your freedom?
• Your obedience?
• Would you stop living to earn God's acceptance... and start living because you already have it?

Because the Judge didn't simply forgive you.

He declared you righteous forever.

Um, and as we kind of ring out these last seven or eight verses over the next few weeks, um, you're gonna hear some man just commonalities between them, some similarities because we're trying to get to the heart of the gospel. All right, so Romans 8.33, once again, here we go. Who can bring accusation against God's elect? And we've already answered this. Like nobody can. Like if God has already settled it, it's over. Forgiveness vs. Justification

Christians probably answer it means God forgives me. And that while that's true, it doesn't go far enough because forgiveness means your debt has been canceled. Justification means your status has been changed. And God didn't simply wipe your slate clean, he gave you a brand new standing before him. And Paul asks, who can bring accusation against God's elect? And he answers it, God is the one who justifies. One sentence, one word, a lifetime of freedom. You see, God didn't simply erase your record. Again, he credited Christ's righteousness to your account. Remember where Paul is taking us. Remember, from all the way from Romans 1 all the way to now, that he shows us that none of us are righteous, that we fail all the time, that we die, but at the same time, when we die with Christ, we are made new, even though there's still a battle with sin. What Does Dikaioō Mean?

Greek word is it really means to declare righteous, to pronounce innocent, to acquit in a court of law. It's a legal word, a courtroom word. Picture standing before a judge once again of all creation. All of your sin is exposed on video. Every motive is revealed before everybody, every failure known. And then the judge slams the gavel and says, righteous. Not because you earned it, and not because you deserve it, but because Jesus stood in your place. God isn't pretending you never sinned. He knows every sin you've ever committed. And so what justification is, it isn't God ignoring your guilt. It's God declaring that your guilt has already been paid for. And the courtroom isn't isn't empty because you were innocent. It's empty because Jesus already took your sentence. God's declaration is greater than your reputation. I'm gonna say

it again. Some of you have had a horrible past, some of you have been doing things right now, but I got news for you. All have fallen short. Romans 3.23, all have fallen short of the glory of God. God's declaration is greater than your reputation. So here's number one of three points. Number one,

Point 1: The Verdict Has Already Been Declared

once again, the verdict has already been declared. Stop living like you're still on trial. Sometimes we wake up, man, and we've screwed up the thought we thought last night, the thing we did four days ago, and we continue. Is God still pleased with me? Did I lose his acceptance? Do I have to learn his love again today or earn his love again today? Paul says, no, the verdict has already been announced. Justified, past tense, finished, settled forever. You don't wake up every morning hoping for a new verdict. I believe that's how a lot of us Christians live. And you're when you live week to week and your religion is confess and then live like hell the rest of the week, it's no wonder you're not going to wake up with heaven on your mind. You wake up learning to live in the one Christ already secured, the verdict that you are new. Are you living like someone waiting outside of the courtroom or like someone who's already been heard, the judge declaring not guilty?

Point 2: The Righteousness Isn't Yours—It's Christ's

Number two is this the righteousness isn't yours. Please, for the love of Jesus, nail that into your head. Your righteousness is not yours. It's Christ. The beauty of the gospel, God does not accept you because you are righteous. It doesn't matter how many times you go to church, it don't matter who your parents are, it don't matter who your granddaddy was, it doesn't matter if you're a kid in a preacher's home. He accepts you because Jesus is righteous. Theologians

call this the great exchange. Your sin credited to Christ, his righteousness credited to you. This is what Paul celebrates throughout the entirety of Romans. Jesus received what you deserved, and you received what only he deserved. Martin Luther called this an alien righteousness, uh, not strange or foreign, a righteousness that comes from outside of you. You didn't produce it, you merely received it. And the robe you're wear wearing wasn't stitched together by your good works, it was woven by the perfect righteousness of Christ. So stop trying to impress uh this God who already clothed you in his son. The one and only God sends his one and only son to die for your sins. Which leads me to number

Point 3: Live Like You've Been Declared Righteous

three. Live like you have been declared righteous. Do not live beneath your identity. Too many believers still introduce themselves by their past. I'm divorced, I'm addicted, I am an alcoholic, I am anxious, I'm broken, I'm the one who failed. Paul says that's not your identity anymore. Your identity is justified. So when look, when God looks at you, he sees his son. When heaven looks at you, it sees righteousness. When Satan looks at you, he some he sees someone he can try to accuse, but never condemn. Because the judge has already spoken. So stop introducing yourself by what Jesus already buried. The cross simply, the cross wasn't simply where Jesus forgave sinners, it was where he exchanged places with them, and your guilt became his righteousness, his righteousness became yours. That's justification. That's why Paul can ask, who can bring accusation? Because every accusation has already been answered at Calvary. The gospel isn't simply that your sins were removed. It's that Christ's righteousness was permanently credited to

Christ Took Your Place

your account. So how's your confidence change? If how does it how would it change if you actually believe God had already declared you righteous? How would your worship change, your prayers, your freedom, your obedience? Would you stop living to earn God's acceptance and start living because you already have it? You don't stand before God hoping to be accepted. You stand before Him, already accepted in Christ. Because Redeemed Rebels, we need to understand the judge didn't simply forgive you, he declared you righteous forever. Amen.
