#107 | Not Even Death | Romans 8:38 | The Great 8

If you asked most people what they fear most, death would probably top the list. It's the one enemy no one escapes. We spend our lives trying to delay it, ignore it, or outrun it, yet Paul begins his greatest declaration of God's unbreakable love by looking death square in the face and saying, "Not even death." That's not denial. That's resurrection confidence. If death—the greatest enemy mankind has ever known—cannot separate us from Christ, then nothing else ever will. 

Paul's confidence wasn't rooted in wishful thinking. It was anchored in the empty tomb. Jesus entered death carrying our sin and walked out carrying our victory. Death still hurts. We still grieve. We still feel the sting of loss. But because Christ conquered the grave, death has become a defeated enemy. For every believer, it is no longer the end of the story—it's the doorway into the presence of Jesus.

In this episode, we unpack three life-changing truths from Romans 8:38:

• Death Cannot Defeat You — Jesus has already conquered the grave. Death may end this earthly life, but it can never separate God's children from His love. 
• Life Cannot Distract You — Success, failure, temptation, suffering, and uncertainty all compete for our attention, but none of them have the power to undo what Christ has accomplished. 
• Eternity Belongs to Christ — Our salvation isn't temporary. From the moment Christ saves us into eternity, we belong to Him forever. 

The Gospel doesn't simply prepare us to die well—it teaches us how to live without fear. Because Jesus lives, every believer can face both life and death with unshakable hope, knowing that our future is secure in Him.

I am persuaded that neither death nor life. So listen, if you ask most people what they fear most, death would probably be at the top of the list. And we spend billions trying to delay it. We avoid it, ignore it, outrun it. But no one escapes it. Like death is the great reminder that this world is broken. It's the funeral. Like the fatality rate is 100%. The hospital room, the empty chair at the dinner tables, the phone call you never wanted to receive. Death feels final, permanent, and unbeatable. So it's

Why Paul Starts With Death

no accident that Paul begins here. He looks at humanity's greatest fear in the face and says, not even death can separate it from the love of God. See, the greatest enemy of mankind has ever known, uh, the greatest enemy mankind has ever known became the greatest victory Christ has ever won. See, Paul has just said, I am persuaded. Not now, he begins listing everything people assume could separate us from God's love, and he starts with the biggest one, death. Why? Because if death can separate you, then nothing else can either. If death can't separate, I'm gonna say it again, if death can't separate you, nothing else can either. Death is the ultimate test. If God's love survives death, it survives everything. And Paul writes, neither death nor life. Notice the order. Most of us would have written, neither life nor death. Paul reverses it. Why? Because death is the greatest enemy. Scripture calls death the last enemy to be destroyed. And death entered the world because of sin. It's the curse every human eventually faces. And yet Paul places death first, not because he's afraid of it, but because Christ has already defeated it. Death is still an enemy, but it's a defeated enemy. It still hurts, it still causes grief, but it no longer has the final word over those who belong to Jesus. Amen. Death is no longer the end

Death is The Door Way Into The Presence of Christ

of the believer's story, it's the doorway into the presence of Christ. Come on, somebody. That's the gospel. That death is no longer the end of the believer's story. It's the doorway into the presence of Christ. Nothing in life, not even death, can separate us from Christ. So let me give y'all three points. Number

Point 1: Death Cannot Defeat You

The Empty Tomb Changed Everything

tomb and he walked back out. Death hit him and he hit back. He didn't merely survive death, he conquered it. And when Jesus rose from the grave, he robbed death of its ultimate victory. And that's why Paul can later write, where death is your victory, where death is your sting. Death still stings. We still cry. We still grieve. Jesus himself wept at the tomb of Lazarus. But but for the believer, death is no longer destruction, it's departure. Not goodbye forever, just goodbye for now. Before Christ, death was a prison. And after Christ, death became a doorway. And the resurrection changed everything. Death can take you out of this world. It cannot take you away from Jesus. And if you're grieving someone who belonged to Christ, grieve honestly, but don't grieve hopelessly, because the resurrection has the final word. So again, death cannot defeat you. Number

Point 2: Life Cannot Distract You

two, life cannot distract you. Nothing here can separate you either. Sometimes we think our greatest threat is death. Paul reminds life has its dangers too. Life is filled with distractions, yo. Temptations and success and failures and heartbreaks and pressure and comfort and busyness. And the older I get, I realize that life is not getting any easier. The enemy doesn't always try to destroy your faith. Sometimes he simply wants to distract it. And yet Paul says, not even life can separate you from Christ. Not your failures, nor your successes, nor your doubts or questions, nor your worst day or best day. Nothing life throws at you has the authority to undo what Jesus has done for you. Held Through Every Season of Life

you in death keeps you through life. You may wonder, you may stumble, you may have seasons where your faith feels weak, but your security has never rested on the strength of your grip. It has always rested on the strength of his. And number three,

Point 3: Eternity Belongs to Christ

eternity belongs to Christ. We belong to him forever. Whether you wake up tomorrow, whether today's your last day, you belong to Jesus, nothing changes that. Not death, life, not time, not eternity. Listen, but when Jesus saves someone, he saves them completely from this life into the next, forever. What death can actually what can death actually take from a Christian? Can it take your forgiveness? Nope. Your adoption? Nope. Your inheritance? Nope. God's love? No. The only thing death can take is what you were never meant to keep forever anyway. And that's your body. Listen, death can't cancel your salvation. Death can't erase your name from the book of life. Death cannot solace God's promises. Death can't undo the cross. And death can't empty uh heaven. Death can't defeat King Jesus.

Jesus Defeated Death
