What are you looking forward to the most for a Saratoga summer?
ZacI know it sounds so simple, but a freer summer.
NoelSo yeah, that's also on my list. And then another thing that I really look forward to is people watching.
ZacOoh, girl.
NoelOoh. I'm Emmy Award-winning journalist Noel McLaren.
ZacAnd I'm local business owner Zac Denham. And this is Off-Track Saratoga Podcast.
NoelSometimes we're on track.
ZacSometimes we go a little off.
NoelBut it's always worth the listen.
ZacOkay.
NoelHello, hello. Welcome back to another episode of Off-Track Saratoga. And what did you just say before we? It's really pathetic. It's really miserable. And I think that I'm over it. But at least if we're gonna be in a cold spot, we've got a warm fire here at the Adelphi Gardens.
ZacYes, some hot coffee. Cheers. Cheers, darling.
NoelWe are giving you a first look at the brand new garden at the Adelphi, the courtyard that is in the middle of the hotel that has not really been open or had much activity to the public. Well you'll see it here first.
ZacSo like I woke up this morning um to prepare to come down here and do the do the recording. And I have this setting on my phone so
This is not normal May weather!
Zaclike I can just look at the screen and it tells me, you know, the date, the time, and the and the temperature. Right. And the temperature read 40 degrees.
NoelOh heck no, it's May.
ZacYo, it is mid-May.
NoelIt's mid-May, yeah.
ZacWhy? Why? But it's okay, because I'm gonna I'm the same person who's gonna be complaining the second it gets over 80.
NoelWhy do we do that?
ZacSo it's fine.
NoelWhich actually I think it's gonna be in the middle of it. Hopefully, like next week. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
ZacSo yeah, it's just uh it's a little ridiculous, but at the same time, I guess it's fine. I don't have anything to say.
NoelI just feel like this has never happened before. Like I have a friend who's from Atlanta, and she is like, she she's done. She's really done. She rather have the heat.
ZacWell, I mean, my sister, my sister, when she moved up here last year, she was like, they were in Dallas, and she said summer 2024 is she they had like 40 some odd days over a hundred degrees. Right, right, right, right. Like straight through, even at night. Yeah. And she was like, listen, I I'll take the snow over that area. It's not it. Yeah.
NoelNo, I mean, that's true. I'm ready to get outside. You know what it is? I feel like it's just a buddy antsy. I I'm getting, yeah, I have ants in my pants. And I also feel like this town is built for like outside activities. Yeah, activities and activities just like this where we're sitting right now at the Adelphi
Introducing the new Adelphi Gardens!
NoelGardens. Zach, you this was like before your time. So for those of you who are familiar with the Adelphi Hotel before its renovation, it had a charming little garden. It was almost like a little English or European garden courtyard in the middle of the hotel. And it there were flowers and candles. And honestly, when the hotel shut down for renovation, that was the thing that made me the most upset. This was kind of like a place that was low-key, that was just quiet where you could come hang out with friends, get a drink, not even get a drink, just come and sit. Yeah. And I feel like I've been longing for that atmosphere. Saratoga, especially in the spring, summer, I mean, patio season, courtyard season, porch sit-in season.
ZacPorch sit in season, baby. No, this actually like this definitely scratches the itch for that. Yeah, so where we are right now is so wild. So whenever I first walked in, I haven't seen it um in a few years. And so it was kind of a a trip to kind of walk through it and see the evolution of how they've transformed this space uh back here that once was kind of just an open land behind the behind the hotel. So it's really cool, it's cozy. Um, and they're gonna have some really exciting activations happening here that we're we're gonna share with you guys. But uh, it's a really cool spot.
NoelSo this has been open for a bit, but I feel like it hasn't had a reason to attract people.
ZacUm yeah, I mean the season's kind of in touch and go, so they haven't really had an opportunity to give it the pomp and circumstance that it deserves.
NoelIt's finally going to have its official opening, and we're going to, on Belmont weekend, they're going to have the first experience of live music. And that's gonna be happening in Belmont. June 5th, the opening of the Belmont weekend. Um, big celebration, and they're going to be having live music.
ZacYeah, cocktails, live music, all of that starting around seven o'clock. Uh, what a way to kick off the weekend.
NoelAnd they're gonna continue to have that every Thursday. Every Thursday.
ZacSo uh listen, I mean, here's the thing. We all are looking for something to do, especially um on Friday Eve, right? Uh some of us, you know, I know I, for one, I'd much rather go out on a Thursday night than I would on a Friday or Saturday night. And so just to have another op uh another option in town to put into the rotation uh is uh is awesome.
NoelAnd it's something that's unique.
ZacYeah, and this is a super like comfortable spot. They've got a bar out here, so it's gonna be it's gonna be a real, real destination.
NoelIt's quiet, it's magical. And what I remember from the old years of the Adelphi uh garden courtyard is just I don't know, I I used to I have memories, my favorite memory of the Adelphi Garden was coming with my best friend when we didn't even live here. We were we would go to Lake George for summer vacation, and my parents would come downtown and and do something, and my friend and I would be wandering the streets of Saratoga looking for something to do, and we would land in the Adelphi Gardens. And it just reminded me of like a little fairy home. Like like a fairy was gonna pop out of a bush at any second and surprise us.
ZacSo you can tell they've definitely fitted out the space to the space is definitely going to grow and evolve. And I can't wait to see it mature. Yes. Uh, because it's really gonna be a great special in the heart of downtown.
NoelYou can see um the sky, which is really cool, you know. It's outside, there's a fountain. Um, they do have some trellises to get that feel of being inside a garden happening again.
ZacYeah, it's gonna be great. So um definitely put it on your calendar, check it out, starting uh June the 5th, and then every Thursday thereafter, live music down here at the gardens at the Adelphi.
NoelAnd we're talking about like the weather finally shaping up. We're all real it's been a long winter.
ZacIt's been a it's been brutal.
NoelIt's been brutal. What are you
Saratoga Summer- What we're most looking forward to
Noellooking forward to the most for a Saratoga summer?
ZacI didn't have an opportunity to do this last summer because we were like in the thick of um uh standard fairs, uh, trying to open a restaurant. Trying to open a restaurant, you know. Um we usually take a boat out on Lake George a couple of times uh a season, Clark and I and the dogs. And I'm really, really looking forward to being able to have the luxury of a couple days here and there to do that. Yeah. Um, and I know it sounds so simple, but it's just really a great way to kill the day. A freer summer. Yeah, yeah, a freer summer. I'm looking forward to having, you know, a little bit of uh of extra free time this summer to enjoy slowing down.
NoelYeah.
ZacI know that's uh that's it's really uh that that simple.
NoelSo yeah, I was gonna say like, what are several things, one of three things, but like that are specific to Saratoga. Like for me, things that I'm looking forward to, I also have on my list a minimal schedule. We talked about this. I hate it and I love it. I like to have a schedule, I but a loose one. Yeah. So it's nice to like, okay, we're not gonna have sports or like school or things stacked. Yeah. We can plan as we go and wake up and say, what do we feel like doing today? And then I'll make a schedule. But just kind of like having a minimal schedule, I think is something I'm really looking forward to.
ZacYeah, I think I think that's that's I I'm right there with you on that.
NoelAnd then this number two on my list is Lake George. Especially specifically this year, because as my kids get older, I can stay out later. It's not like I have to be like, oh, it's getting dark. Like we can pack some sandwiches or break some dinner on the lake and just enjoy.
ZacBut also, too, Lake George has like some great arcades, you know. Like, and the kids listen, they have some good arcades over there. And I will start.
NoelSo we can actually spend until 100%.
ZacMe and the kids, I would I would burn through so much so much. Rob better go to the ATM before we hit up the arcade. That's all I'm gonna say.
NoelUm Max very competitive.
ZacWell, let bring it because so am I. I I'm down to clown. I'll get my shop on. I'm gonna make that eight-year-old cry.
NoelI'm gonna be sleeping on a bench in the corner while you guys do that.
ZacNo, another thing too at Lake George that we love to do every summer. Um, and we try to we try to time it out whenever we take the boat out, is they have the dog beach. And our our Max and Marv love to go out on the dog beach. Do they swim? Yeah, yeah. So there's like a mile of part of the lake that is niche-free, dog fantasy, live your life. So that's another thing that I want to. We didn't get to do it last year, so I'm gonna do it this year.
NoelI have to bring Julie, we'll go. Um, so yeah, that's also on my list. And then another thing that I really look
People watching during Saratoga Summers
Noelforward to every single summer, and this is Saratoga specific, is people watching.
ZacOoh, girl.
NoelIt is my favorite pastime in the summer in Saratoga.
ZacWhere's your favorite perch to do so?
NoelOh, that's a good question. I have several favorite perches. I mean, any bar or restaurant, yeah, because you just don't know what you're gonna get. You have your regulars, and then you have your out-of-towners, and then you have them trying to coexist.
ZacYeah.
NoelWhich is always fun to watch that unfold.
ZacYes, that I will say this. I'm gonna be with this statement. It may sound partial, but this is an actual objective statement. There are two window seats in Boca's champagne bar.
NoelOh, is that a good perk?
ZacGirl, let me tell you, those seats on a Friday afternoon or a Saturday afternoon during peak season is the place to watch passers by and wait for it. It's the best place to watch people try to poorly parallel park. Oh my God. When I tell you, honey, pour the champagne. We've got a show to watch.
NoelI'm gonna do that.
ZacNo lie.
NoelNo lie clearing my schedule just experience.
ZacIf I didn't own Bocage, I would be like, hell yeah, we're going there.
NoelThat's a good one. You know what's also a good one? Actually, at the Adelphi. Because I like to watch without people knowing that I'm on the port, like on the patio. Like the library on the little deck, the patio outside on the second floor, because then you're you're literally looking down on people.
ZacOh, it's great.
NoelThis is the time of year where you get people coming from all over the world to this place. And I I'm just such a sucker for seeing what makes people tick.
ZacYeah.
NoelWhere they're going, what they're doing. I love an airport, and Saratoga in the summer is its own kind of little airport.
ZacIt is, though.
NoelIt's so much fun. Yeah. People watching.
ZacPeople watching is great. So we just had part one, I
Mother's Day
Zacguess, of restaurant Olympics in Saratoga Springs, which was uh Mother's Day. Um I'm going I'm going to um ask you how was your Mother's Day? Because it actually looked like you had a quite love, quite a lovely afternoon. Uh what did you guys get into?
NoelUm sports.
ZacOkay.
NoelI um attended all my children's sports games.
ZacUh-huh.
NoelUm, we started with soccer in the morning and then um Max sang at church. So Rob and I divided and conquered. And then we uh had a baseball game out in Hagaman, which Rob called Hagaman. Hagaman. And then we went for a nice steak dinner.
ZacGreat.
NoelSo I mean, it was great. It was wonderful. I loved it. Um, it was just the perfect combination of like being with my kids and also um for that baseball game in Hagaman, I should say. I didn't go. Rob went and took Mac, and I just like sat and and edited a podcast and was by myself. I mean, I feel like moms in general, you ask moms like what do they want for Mother's Day?
Moms don't want to be needed on mother's day
NoelWhat do you want in general for a holiday? And it's so complicated because like we want to be with our families, we love them more than anything in the world, but also we just want to not be needed for a second. I feel like it's that simple. I feel like it's it's not that I like I love my purpose. I most of the time, like I I thrive on that. Yeah, but also to just not be needed to to prepare the next meal or to plan the next experience or figure out the calendar.
ZacOr fold a full clothes, just like anything.
NoelI just want to not be needed. Yeah. Like, do you understand? Like, I just I mean, and if it's not the kids, it's the animals or it's the husband. It's just like, and it's so funny because I just remember living alone in my 20s and being like, oh my gosh, I just want to be needed. I just want to be loved, and how perspective is really truly everything.
ZacYeah, but that pause is really important too.
NoelOh, it totally, totally is. And I feel like this time of year we're really in the thick of it, right? We're planning like end-of-year school activities.
ZacWhere is definitely hectic?
NoelWhere like, I mean, literally, all I also want. Have you seen
Collectors vs. chuckers
Noellike the memes about moms who just want a dumpster for Mother's Day? Like, I like I'm a collector. I like to collect things. I am having trouble throwing out like the baby clothes that I no longer need from my children just because it still smells like them. It still reminds me of them. But at the same time, like I just I have this urge to just purge.
ZacYeah, I in the spring. So funny you brought that up. So my first thought when I woke up this morning, well, I a second thought, because the first thought I looked at the the weather. The second thought I had was the fridge is too full.
NoelThe fridge is too full?
ZacThe fridge is too full. So, to your point, that's what I'm doing this afternoon. I'm going to cluttering. I'm going home and I'm throwing everything away. Clark Gail, do you hear me? I'm throwing everything away. I just can't. I can't with listen, listen, my my aesthetic in my spirit, in my personal, in my spaces is model home. No one lives here.
NoelYeah.
ZacRight?
NoelHow's Clark?
ZacHe loves to keep stuff.
NoelHe's a Tchotchki guy.
ZacUm, he loves um, he in particular, he loves cords. You know, like cords to, you know, USB ports and USB C's and all the all the bullshit. It's just like, what do you need this for? There's nine. Does he have a box of cables? He has many a box of cables and then he has cables like that don't have boxes. It's just chaos for me. And and that's where we we don't butt heads, but we it's actually we did butt heads about it for a while, and now it's kind of like an ongoing LOL.
NoelYeah. Um Rob and I are the same, but like I'm the hoarder.
ZacI I'm with you though. Like, I need to we're gonna hold.
NoelIt's
City ASMR
NoelNew York City ASMR. Listen, I feel at home. Listen to that. It's the sound of sirens. It's almost over. Some people say that they need this sound to relax, Zach. You're one of them. I don't need it.
ZacOkay. Okay, so
More collector VS Chucker
Zacit's just one of those things like, you know, at this point, we used to actually uh bicker about it, but now it's actually kind of a a running joke. You know, I guess it's like hey, do you want you wanna, you know, you want to put this with your collection or whatever? But I'm all about it. Throw it away, get rid of it.
NoelDon't so you're a chucker and he's a hoarder.
ZacAbsolutely.
NoelI'm the hoarder, Rob's the chucker. I mean, to the extent where like we had a crystal bowl that wasn't mine, it was Rob's, like before, like I think when he moved out, his somebody gave him like a Waterford crystal bowl that we just didn't have on display. It was in on a box, it was in a box, and he wanted to throw it out. He was like, I'm just gonna throw this out because we're not using it, we're getting rid of it. Like, I don't need it anymore. And I was like, it's a Waterford crystal bowl. He's like, You've never seen it before in your entire life.
ZacAnd I'm like, Yeah, but you keep that.
NoelI think he did throw it out. Sorry to whoever got that for him.
ZacSorry to this man.
NoelBut yeah, like I just I just I he would throw out everything and anything, and I would save anything and anything. And why do those there's always a trucker, there's always a collector.
ZacIt's funny though, right?
NoelAlways marry each other.
ZacIt's so funny. Anyway, um, so yeah, so you
Zac's journey with Mother's Day
ZacI'm glad you had a you had a nice Mother's Day. It sounded like a little hectic, but it also sounds like you got some time for yourself and had some time with the fam.
NoelIt was perfect. How was your mother's day? Because even though you're not a mom, you really celebrated everywhere by owning a restaurant in Saratoga.
ZacI uh I provide for them for the for the hot mamas of Saratoga.
NoelHow is your Mother's Day tea? Because actually, that's probably my favorite and probably our tradition every year is we do that and then we go to the carousel because it's also the weekend that the carousel opens in Saratoga.
ZacYeah, we had this was our fifth annual Mother's Day. I love it.
NoelIt's my favorite thing. If you haven't done it, save a seat for me so don't everybody sign up for it. But we couldn't go this year because of sports and stuff, but it's it's absolutely the best.
ZacIt's a wonderful afternoon. Um, so yeah, this is our this was our fifth annual Mother's Day tea, and it really is what you think it is. It's like tea at the plaza, right? You come in, you have your your beautiful tea tower. This year we did something a little different that I think actually um called for a different audience. Um a lot of familiar faces, but then some a new audience, which was hilarious. So what we did was. Hey friends, Zach here for Opera Saratoga. This year marks Opera Saratoga's 65th festival season, and it's one of the most exciting lineups we've had in years. Featuring My Fair Lady, the Elixir of Love, Happy End, and a workshop presentation of the new work, Drift, which will get its world premiere next season right here in Saratoga. And on June 4th, we celebrate it all at the annual gala at Saratoga National. An incredible evening of cocktails, performances, dinner, auctions, and a few surprises along the way, all supporting the future of opera and art education in our community. Whether you've been attending for years or you're brand new to Opera Saratoga, this is the season to experience it all. Tell them off track sent you. We'd love to see you there. This was the first year we did Unlimited Bubbles. And what we set up next to the T station, we set up like um a like a build your own spritz uh station with like botanicals and juices and all that stuff. So listen to this. So we had two seatings this this weekend, and it was just Clark and I working it, right? And we were like, you know, like this is a great opportunity for it. It was a great opportunity for just the two of us to, you know, one-on-one with our comments, right? And so I have the menu set, I'm getting the food and stuff ready. Clark is checking in and with everybody and making sure they're settled. And as he's checking with everybody, he's just saying, like, hey, like, just to confirm, are there any allergies or, you know, anything? Everybody's like, no, no allergies, no allergies, no allergies. And so as I'm plating everything, I look around the room and I said, wait! I was like, everybody, I need you all to look around. I was like, I want you all to give yourself a round of applause because I think this is the first time in Bokaj's history where A, no one had an allergy at tea, and B, there were no kids. It was all grown-ups. And I was like, oh my gosh. And I was like, it was it the unlimited bubbles. Is this what got everybody here? And everybody was so we all had the tee hee he's and the ha ha ha's, and like it was it was so much fun. So we did two seatings for that, and then Standard Fair was like ripping the whole the all day from 11 to 6. Um, we did a hybrid um brunch-lunch menu. Um, and they crushed it. The team is awesome. Um it the feedback was great. Like, you know, it was a hell of a weekend and the prep the preparation was was intense, but it was definitely worth it because I know we we we made made people feel special, you know. That's all that matters, you know. Yeah, yeah.
NoelEspecially for mama.
ZacMama, I feel anything for your mama, do anything for your mama, you know, and it kept me busy and it, you know.
NoelI mean, I don't know. Like, so you got something special. Um, Zach.
Zac's new tattoo
NoelLike, so if you don't know Zach's mom's sweet Alice, we lost her how many years ago was this?
ZacTwo years.
NoelTwo years ago. Um, I hope my boys do something like this. This is so sweet.
ZacSo my sister lives in my old crash pad above Bocage. And so she came downstairs and she was like, Hey, I want to have a hurricane. The hurricane is my mom's favorite New Orleans cocktail. Hurricane Alice? The Hurricane Alice, you could have it at both of our restaurants. And um she was like, I want to have a hurricane with you for mom. And I was like, Oh yeah, come down. I'm at Bocage, no problem. And so she would she showed me this um drawing of a tattoo that she wanted to get, and she was like, Oh, I'm thinking about getting this, you know, for um in honor of mom. And I was like, actually, that's really cute. I would I've been itching to get one too. Yeah.
NoelSo like And you haven't had one for your mom.
ZacRight. Well, I d I have one for mom. I wanted to I wanted to like add to the collection. We lost my mom two years ago to lung cancer. It was really, really fast and really sad. Um, anybody who met who has had the privilege privilege of meeting her was really lucky, and the Adolphi was lucky to ha host her so many times. Yeah. But anyway, so Cameron, I was like, oh, I've been itching to get a tattoo as well. Yeah. I leave her alone for 10 minutes and she comes back to me and she's like, um, we have an appointment. We're going get tattoos. So I did this. I don't know if you can see.
NoelSo I'll describe it or you describe it.
ZacSo it's literally, so it's it's it's tongue in cheek. It's tongue in cheek. We lost her to we lost her to lung cancer, but she always used to say she's she smoked Virginia Slim ultralight menthols, and she would always make a joke of like, no, no, I'm not gonna get cancer. I'm just getting ultralight cancer. LOL. Rest in peace, mom. You're you she's uh the consummate jokester. Um so we got that, and then so like in the smoke, we we we put her name in there. So it's she would love it. She she would love it. Um we me and Cameron actually joked about why we were we were like, where are we gonna get it? And um uh I was like, we should get it on our butts because she always used to say we're such a pain in her ass. Well, why didn't you do that? Because you wanted to look at it. No, I knew my husband would kick would literally kick me in the butt. So um, so yeah, so we honored mama that um that way this is durable. And um, so yeah, I mean, yeah, Mother's Day is not, it's not easy.
Complex feelings surrounding Mother's Day
NoelUm we could talk about that too. I feel like, you know, Mother's Day is like this kind of double-edged sword because it can be such a warm, fun, inclusive holiday where we're honoring this person who, you know, literally gave you life and who, you know, has done so much for you. We're the emotional, um, we do all the emotional legwork for the family. We carry the load and and and I feel like so many people have such good feelings associated with Mother Day, Mother's Day. But I also feel like there's the other side of the coin where it's a hard holiday for a lot of people. It's hard.
ZacAnd it is one of those things that it's inevitable too. I mean, we're all ultimately going to get to a point where we have to feel Mother's Day as a heavy way. In a heavy way.
NoelMy mother had her mom for 102 years. God bless. And it was, you know, it was always, well, who who's who's the queen of Mother's Day? Baba, my great grandmother, my mom, or me. Yeah. You know, I kind of like to say motherhood is for the ones in the trenches. Yeah. I like to say that.
ZacIt takes it takes a strong, it takes a strong woman to be mother.
NoelBut 102 years and then she passed away. And now Mother's Day is hard for her. So I I mean, and then there's also the people who are trying to become moms.
ZacYeah, one of my want to be moms. One of my friends from college uh shared something really personal this this weekend. Um, and I didn't even know this. And she shared how she and her husband have been trying to start their family. And um, this was she apparently lost, they got pregnant, and she actually miscarried last Mother's Day. Oh gosh, what a day to do you know that's hard. And so she she shared her story this this past um weekend on on her Instagram, and it was interesting because she was like, it's hard not to blame yourself. She was like, 100%. I waited too long, or you know, I I partied too hard. You always blame yourself. You know, you know, the there's all these things, it takes a long time for for families to show up, and families show up in different ways every day. 100%.
NoelYou know, and there's different types of mothers. I feel like motherhood, while yes, we're honoring the people who gave you life. You're also honoring the mother figures in your life. I have so many raised me, the Yeah, I mean the teachers, um, all of these people who mothered you through your life. It's it's definitely a complicated. It's a complicated holiday.
ZacIt's a complicated holiday for sure.
NoelPeople who don't have relationships with their moms.
ZacYou know, and the first year was really hard. And and also so Mother's Day is the is always the second Sunday in so my mom's birthday is May the 3rd. And then so it's it's bam bam. It's always a really tough, weird time for me. This year, though, because Standard Fair was open and we I had something to really kind of like dig my heels and focus on. I just was like, let me use this opportunity to do something that I know would make her proud, which is like getting out there, yeah, making people happy, sharing space with other families and creating memories.
NoelAnd can I tell you something like from a mom of two boys or just a mother who like it's not the big things, like seeing all you've accomplished and everything you've done, and I didn't know your mom, but hearing what she was like and how she just championed you, being happy in your element, seeing you smile, like your mom is so proud of you and everything that you've done. And I feel like there's only two people in this world moms and their kids. Yep. And so, you know, whether you have a mom that you have a relationship with or not, just to all the kids out there who need that, hear it from this mom. I'm proud of you.
ZacYep. And that's the thing too.
NoelShe would be so proud of you.
ZacI, and that's some of my some of my team members over at Stander Fair, you know, they told me they told me happy Mother's Day because they're like they're like, because I do sometimes. I'm like, hey, kid, go fetch this for your mother. Your mother meaning me, like because I'm and I'm like the den mom, you know. And so there, you know, a couple of my kids gave me a hug and they were like, Hey, happy Mother's Day, you know. So, yeah, you just gotta take care of each other. And you know, we had a we had a long weekend, but it was definitely something to um remember and celebrate. And I'm glad you had a good time and we made the most of it on my side too.
