Democracy. North Carolina says college students do not know where they live. This is the Wilmington Standard daily update for Thursday, June 11th, 2026. According to the Carolina Journal, Democracy North Carolina and the League of Women Voters are all concerned about young voters, specifically college students, being denied the right to vote because they cannot get their address correct. Under current North Carolina law. there are two paths to proper registration to vote. The first and best way is to be registered either through the DMV, mail, or the local election board 25 days before Election Day. That gives the state the proper amount of time to verify eligibility before voting commences. North Carolina also offers same day registration during early voting. Those who would like to participate in the elections may register at any early voting site showing ID and proof of residency, and cast a ballot just like anyone else. North Carolina law does not allow same day registration on Election day. The rub comes during verification. Up until recently, the Board of Elections would mail the verification card to the address the potential voter provided. If that mail was returned as undeliverable, the ballot could be flagged for review, and in some cases, additional follow up steps would be taken before a final determination. But under the election reforms in Senate Bill 747 enacted last year, only one verification card sent through the mail is required and only one undeliverable notice is cause for the ballot to be subject to further inspection, including rejection. According to Democracy North Carolina that hurts college students who disproportionately register and vote the same day. At least this Lefitst organizations being consistent. They oppose voter ID because they apparently think minorities are mentally unable to go get one. And they also think college students are not bright enough to remember their home addresses. We need to actually stop the whole silly idea of same day registration in the first place. It jams up election areas, places potentially ineligible ballots into the counting process, and adds a whole additional layer of complexity to our voting system. If college students, or anyone else for that matter, wish to partake in our republic at the voting booth, they need to register 25 days ahead of time. And remember, they only have to register once.
