SPEAKER_02

Hey everybody. Another glorious week here at the tavern. Finally got some advertising. So I'm hoping to hit a few other uh locations. I know as as you all know, my tavern tends to move around a bit. So I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna flip the sign open. I want to see who walks in today.

SPEAKER_00

Oh tender, batender. Like a triple distilled thunderbolt margarita served in a hollowed-out pokeball, rimmed with crushed rare candies. And exactly, I mean exactly, 151 grains of salt. And for the appetizer, listen team bartender. Are you listening to me?

SPEAKER_02

I'm listening, I'm listening. What you need?

SPEAKER_00

I want you to bring me a tower of mozzarella sticks arranged to assemble a dragon type Pokemon evolution chart. I'd also like a side of ketchup, but only, and I repeat, but only if it's dramatically prevented, if it's dramatically presented by someone yelling, a wall of condiment appeared. You hear me, Bartender? I get after that. You taking these notes down?

SPEAKER_02

I get I there's one problem I have here. So you said in a Pokeball.

SPEAKER_00

The customer's always right. I want every five minutes, please have a staff member approach my table and announce that my dream is trying to evolve. And if it successfully evolves, I'd like it to upgrade into a mug-a-thunderbolt supreme with a tiny umbrella. You cannot forget the tiny umbrella, sparkles, and unnecessary lore. And finally, when the check arrives, place it inside a mysterious treasure chest and challenge me to a gym battle for a 10% discount.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. Yeah, I got all that. The only thing is I'm out of Pokeballs. Is it okay if it's served in a master ball?

SPEAKER_00

No, nonsense. I need you to make the pokeball. Go find a Voltorb, split it in half, and give me that as a Pokeball. Okay, I'm as the Pokeball turns. I need a Pokeball.

SPEAKER_02

All right, I got you. Now, as I'm getting that order put to you, what brings you around today? What's going on? How have you been?

SPEAKER_00

I'm feeling great, man. It's a new year. Well, it's actually June, but it's a new year for me. I'm coming back to recording the podcast, and I want to join a fellow drink with you. So I'm excited to come on to your show. Now that's fair.

SPEAKER_02

And you said As the Pokeball turns was your podcast, right?

SPEAKER_00

That is correct.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, what type of uh stories do you tell on that podcast, or uh what do you talk about on Pokemon on there?

SPEAKER_00

Well, so on my podcast, I get to interview people about their experience with Pokemon, and they dive deep into their own lore, starting from when they began into Pokemon, or when they started going into Pokemon, and then also afterwards, like how they kind of grew up with it, how they maybe faded out with it, and how it's kind of affected our lives. I've been going on it for about I think going on three years at this point. So looking forward to kind of returning that at coming up soon.

SPEAKER_02

I'll be excited. I have listened to a few of your episodes. I do think my favorite one might be the one about that guy with a squirtle at a pawn shop involved. Definitely go look at that one.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely look at that one. I think that's a familiar voice if I remember correctly. It's been a while since I listened to it.

SPEAKER_02

Might be a little familiar, but nah, that was definitely a good one. Well, here, as I'm putting together your drink for you, I'm currently cracking an electrode in half for you. I hope that's not too much of an issue. Well, while I'm getting that together, I am curious. Since you're a Pokemon fanatic here, what is your favorite Pokemon?

SPEAKER_00

My favorite Pokemon is Corvanite. It is a steel-flying Pokemon from the land of Galar.

SPEAKER_02

It's a good choice. I like I do like Corviknight for uh the Galarian uh region of the bird Pokemon. Uh reminds me a lot of uh Pidgeotto, like what Pidgeotto's role filled in uh the first generation.

SPEAKER_00

It always reminds me of uh Latios or Latias back from Oras, to where you got to fly around with it, you know, and the lore of Galar, um Corviknight actually transports people from the Galar region around the area. So oh really, I didn't know that. Uh that's kind of where I like it. I kind of identify with that a little bit.

SPEAKER_02

Nah, mine definitely would have to be uh Squirtle. Hands down. Uh, ever since Squirtle Squad was a thing. If I ever find a Squirtle with sunglasses, that's the thing I have to buy. That that is my little dude. Well, I gotta ask you.

SPEAKER_00

What did you think of whenever they did Squirtle with the Power Rangers?

SPEAKER_02

They did Squirtle with the Power Rangers.

SPEAKER_00

Well, kind of a mixture like so they had the different Squirtle Squads dressed up almost like the Power Rangers, not like a crossover, but like they came out as like the Power Rangers and kind of made their own Megasaur, I think, when they kind of stood on top of each other.

SPEAKER_02

I did not see that.

SPEAKER_00

It's a very um, I think it was a filler episode. I can't remember what, but it's very entertaining. I'll say that I'm definitely recommended to watch it.

SPEAKER_02

No, I'm I I only remember, I think, the original Squirtle Squad episode. I didn't know that uh I do remember a couple times I think Ash's Squirtle put on his sunglasses again.

SPEAKER_00

But by the time they came back, and that's when Squirtle uh disappeared, I guess.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, that makes sense. I real quick on the anime, why can't Ash keep a consistent team? Like that's a good question. All of his Pokemon always go like they're gone or they're with the professor for some reason, and there's so many Pokemon in so many situations that he could have called on that he just didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Well, the psychologist to me says that Ash is portraying how his dad abandoned him and never showed up. So, in a way, Ash is kind of reflecting his dad's choices. Um, the other choice is like, well, how are we any different? Because it's hard to choose just six Pokemon out of 1,000 of them, I'll be honest.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I know, and it's only getting harder. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do think I think it's generation five, I thought had some of the weaker Pokemon designs, if I remember correctly, had like the uh keychain Pokemon, uh Garbador, some of the ones that just felt less inspired to me personally, right? But in a lot of the newer ones, like um Sword and Shield and uh Scarlet Violet, really love a lot of these new designs. I love a lot of these new Pokemon that they came up with. Um just so that it's like we have something that feels a little of the original, but it's definitely new, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I could see that. I think there was definitely a gap for me, specifically, probably I would say Gen 6 and part of Gen 7 where I just didn't resonate with the Pokemon as well compared to the old ones, but I definitely enjoy a lot of the newer ones. Like I said, Core of Knights became a new favorite. I love Nakley actually. Um, I got a Pokemon card of it earlier today, and I just love its design. I don't care when it evolves because I don't know, it's just not my thing. But um, you think of Capsicid and all these other Pokemon, there's just so much more to gravitate, I think.

SPEAKER_02

No, I get that, and like you said too, out of the over 1,000 Pokemon, it's so hard to say this one is my favorite because I'm not gonna lie. Uh I think it's Impidimp is one of my other new favorite Pokemon. Uh like his evolution line's so cool. And I'm not gonna lie, the Gigantamax of his evolution line, sick. Yeah, it's very cool. Are you still there? Yes, I'm still here. Can you hear me? I can hear you now. Alright, back to the episode. Um now I am curious, uh, especially on Giganamaxen. Out of the I'm gonna say new Pokemon styles, uh, being the extra evolution, whether it's mega evolution, Gigamax, Dynam uh, Dynamax. Um what's your favorite new Pokemon uh attempt? You're taking back Pokemon gimmicks? Yeah, Pokemon Gimmicks.

SPEAKER_00

I have a soft spot for Giganamax, but I have to say Trash Civilization is probably one of my favorites. I love the small details of each type. You know, you got the old school ghost, unidentified ghost for the ghost type. You've got uh, I think it's an axe for the steel type and stuff like that. I really just like that and how it can be used differently. Change the Pokemon's type without giving it a new form, if so you will. So I think definitely terrestrialization is probably my more recent. If it's after that, it would definitely be. I mean, I don't know if you consider Z moves new, but it would definitely be I like Z moves a lot. And then after that, it'd probably be um Giganimax Dynamax.

SPEAKER_02

What about you? For me, I think I agree with you on terrestrialization. I like the ability of completely changing the Pokemon's type. Like you can throw out a ghost type, but you can have it have a normal terrestrialization, and that allows you to do a lot of crazy switch-ups when you're battling. Um after that, I'd probably say mega evolution, mainly for the fact that I like a lot of the designs of the mega evolved Pokemon. Um, their Pokedex entry is a little disturbing, almost every one of them's in pain, but their designs are so cool.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then I would probably go ahead. Uh and then I would probably end with uh Gigantamax, because there is something about the Sword and Shield era games where you throw out the giant Pokeball, your Pokemon comes out huge, you do these big old moves, and then with uh the Gigantamax 2, it's similar to Mega Evolution, the Pokemon got a new cool looking form.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, especially like that region specifically, they really put in the work to make it feel part of the world. And what I mean by like that is like you think of Z moves, you even think of Mega Evolutions, they didn't feel as important to that region, but Dynamax Giganamax, it was literally built into that region, and you saw the big stadiums, that music, the gym leader music, still by far one of my favorite themes as far as gym leaders are concerned. But to that's why I always just love that, just because of how well they developed, they kind of moved it in with an historian, if so you will.

SPEAKER_02

No, I do get that. One thing that I do wonder if we'll end up coming back to hurt them a bit is how how much they built the Giganamax and Dynamax and into that region. Because it does feel like we won't be able to do interact with uh more versions of that unless we go back to Galare uh uh the Galar region.

SPEAKER_00

No, I agree. I think that's kind of intentional. I don't think Pokemon wants it to come back unless we go back to the Galar region. That's what makes it more special, is that you only get to experience it with that game. If you can experience it with any, that's kind of my biggest one of my biggest quop about Mega Evolutions is that it can be done anywhere. But for Galar, for the Gigantamax and Dynamax, it can only be done there. It can be done anywhere else, as far as we know.

SPEAKER_02

No, that's all fair. Uh, I do wonder just because in that might be just game mechanics, the way that they have to uh design the uh certain aspects. I wonder how much Dynamax and tertialization are actually a little interlinked. Because it both appears that they are uh fueled by some sort of crystal. Right. But again, that's just hearsay for me.

SPEAKER_00

That's a good theory. Yeah. It could definitely be. I mean, technically, Mega Evolution is also done by crystals too. The gems, I mean.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Kind of crystalish.

SPEAKER_02

Honestly, they've been using a lot of crystals, crystallized uh items in these transformations, so I wonder if we're gonna get something on that down the road, or if it's just always gonna be the gimmick.

SPEAKER_00

Actually, when you think about it, they're all crystals, because even Z moves are crystals.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't know that one. I haven't played a lot with Z moves. But no, that isn't that is that's something a thought for later for me, I think. I'm gonna be up at 3 a.m. thinking about that.

SPEAKER_00

Only 3 a.m. but you should be 4 a.m.

SPEAKER_02

Uh now I am curious if you've heard of an old um an old fan theory from the series as well as a little bit of games.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

You brought up Ash's father. Right. And how he's not part of Ash's life. I'm not gonna sit here and be like, ah, Professor Oak. We all know that's the truth, but that's not a fun theory.

SPEAKER_00

I say he's the baby daddy, I don't think he's Ash's father, but continue.

SPEAKER_02

Have you ever considered or heard the theory that Giovanni is Ash's father?

SPEAKER_00

I have, I've heard of that.

SPEAKER_02

And the idea that the reason Jesse, James, and Meowth are constantly chasing after Ash, going after a random Pikachu that seems for no reason. Giovanni's never sending anyone else more dangerous, even though he has a whole Team Rocket again behind him. And the idea is they're just there to keep an eye on Ash. Make sure he's doing well.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

How much thought do you put behind that one?

SPEAKER_00

Not much. Um, I don't I don't lean towards Giovanni being Ash's dad. Just primarily because he Giovanni's never shown any acknowledgement of that that could be even having a child. That is. I've never seen enough evidence. It's the same thing when people talk about Ash and Misty, they try to ship them together. I don't see enough there to make it uh possible. It's just a fun little theory, almost like Ash and a coma kind of thing.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

I remember I used to be on that crew back in the early anime days. Right. But once I started trading out Misty for May and her brother, Dawn, and like every season, it just felt like Ash had a new group of people. I'm like, okay, none of nothing none of it's gonna matter. I do like seeing though, because didn't Misty become or like retake her uh gym leader position in uh Cerulean?

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

No, I did like um honestly, Misty was one of my favorite characters in the anime going on. I wish we had more Misty and less Brock throughout a lot of the animes. But that's just an opinion of mine. Because I thought she had a lot more going for her. Brock loved the dude, but his womanizing was kind of uh a downturn for me whenever I was dealing with him. I mean, he took after his own dad.

SPEAKER_00

His dad had like what 10 kids, so I mean I'm not surprised Brock having that kind of womanizing takes after his old man. But no, I agree. I think Misty had a lot more death, and I think she your she was easy to be more relatable because I think a lot of us know that feeling, especially if you have siblings to be in the younger sibling, and you're all the ones that always get all the attention and you're kind of having to fight for it. And I think that's what people resonated with Misty the most, is how much she was a fighter and a scrapper trying to, you know, she earned everything she got, kind of thing.

SPEAKER_02

No, I get that. I also liked some of the uh flaws of her characters too that they uh played into. Um, in particular, like the uh fear of bugs, right? In a world of bug Pokemon. And didn't most bugs like her?

SPEAKER_00

Uh I know Caterpie did. I know Caterpie did. She had a more realistic fear compared to Iris. Iris always scared of ice types, and that always drove me crazy. I never understood it just because of the dragon weakness. But yeah, Misty always had that fear of bug type Pokemon, but she I don't I think the only one was Caterpie. I can't think of others. I'm sure there probably were, but the one that comes to mind is that brief mammoth that Caterpie was just trying to show some affection to Misty, and Missy was freaking out.

SPEAKER_02

No, yeah. Uh I want to say there was a sunskirt at some point that she got uh introduced to and she freaked out, but it was I think Ashbard out because it was a water type bug. So I I think that happened at some point, but as I'm thinking on Missy and her Pokemon, the only ones that stick out to me right now are obviously Psyduck. You have uh was it Star You or Star Me that she had? I think it was a Star Me. She had both. She had both, okay. And then obviously Tokopee.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, and she also had a Golden and a Horsey. She had a Gyarados.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't know she had a Gyarados.

SPEAKER_00

Eventually, it was when she was a gym leader.

SPEAKER_02

That that makes a lot of sense. That'd be a strong gym leader. Oh yeah, without a doubt. Still can't be Pikachu, but still a strong gym leader. Realistically, that kind of leads in because she's in the game, she's the second gym leader, so she's not supposed to be like a super strong one going like gym one to gym two to gym three. Right. But when they came out with Scarlet and Violet, this was something that kind of bothered me. It's kind of something that I would like to see in the next game if they do another open world Pokemon game. Okay. I want to see progressive gyms. So cool thing with Scarlet Violet is you could go after any gym in any order. Theoretically. Right. My thing is though, is the gem the gyms were not leveled for that. They were leveled for certain certain time periods when you're supposed to interact with them. So theoretically, you could go at the eight gym, and theoretically you can beat him for the first gym. But he wasn't leveled to be the first gym. What I'd like to see is down the road a game where almost like in a flag system, whatever gym you go into at the first as your first gym would be a level one gym. Whatever gym you go to after that would be the level two, and they do it flag-wise uh flag style. I do get there'd be a lot more coding because then you're effectively giving each gym leader, I think, probably five to six different teams based on levels, uh levels and evolutions, I would say. But I feel like it would allow for a more a more uh dynamic gameplay and feel like the world's actually that. Yeah, there just make all gym leaders level 50 fights.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think if they couldn't even do that, they could just do a level a level cap. Like you said, level 50, you just love Pokemon Gonna make a good level and you don't get experience points for it. Kind of think of like Battle Tower almost. Um, that would probably be I think the easiest way to do those gym leader fights. I do agree that those gyms were easy to kind of get mixed up. I remember I think I beat the ice type gym leader, the second gym, and then I think I beat the grass type as my eighth gym. So I was underleveled for the second one, but over-leveled for the eighth one.

SPEAKER_02

No, yeah. I think I did something similar. I went after, I think the water gym was my first gym, and then I somehow made it to the fight in gym for my second gym. I think that's supposed to be like the sixth or seventh gym you fight.

SPEAKER_00

I think we're kind of past the point as far as Pokemon's concern of needing the XP from gym leaders. I think just putting a level cap of either raising or lowering the Pokemon to whatever level and landless battle the gym leader that way would solve a lot of the issues because then at that point each gym is basically the same. It's just a matter of how good is your team.

SPEAKER_02

Hmm. No, that's fair. That is a good thought. I know as somebody who's played the Pokemon games for as long as I have, one thing that has irked me in the recent releases is the inherent XP share. The inherent, everything gives you XP, whether you catch them or faint them, and your whole team is just getting XP now compared to the days where I had to throw out a level 5 magic harp, swap it out for something else that can actually kill something. Just to level up my magic harp. Like I feel like Pokemon's again too easy. So, like, even the idea of taking away XP from the gym battles would in my mind make a little bit more sense because you're getting so much of it just playing the game now.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I mean I remember when I when Leaf Green Fire Red was just released on the Switch, I went back and played it and I forgot how much you had to grind for it. And it kind of made me miss the XP to a degree. I kind of missed it because you kind of have to go back and battle things again, you have to use a versus seeker, and it's just like you find that one trainer that you forgot you didn't fight. That and plus I'm underleveled for the Elite Four right now, so I'm having to grind the Pokemon up. And I think I miss the XP at this point playing those games because you know when you're an adult, you just don't have the time you did as a kid. And I think the way they're doing XP now is happy balance for both fans, where yes, it is too easy, but it also makes it realistic for us who have responsibilities. I can get that. I kinda I kinda like I kinda like the XP to stay. I just think the the way to balance it out is to make it to where you're not rush bone rushing through the game, which I think is doable.

SPEAKER_02

I do think it is. I do still think um catching a Pokemon shouldn't be given the XP it does. Cause you didn't get XP for catching Pokemon before. It was only fainting them.

SPEAKER_00

It's called progression. It's called evolution.

SPEAKER_02

The Pokemon Company evolved. I get it. Okay. Did you give them the Dawnstone?

SPEAKER_00

No, I gave them the Dust Stone.

SPEAKER_02

That makes a lot more sense. That makes a lot of sense. It probably affected all Nintendo. Look at the Power World lawsuits. Ooh, I know it's not a Pokemon topic. Have you given any uh time a day to Pow World? No, I have not.

SPEAKER_00

I barely have time for Pokemon level on trying to do PowerWorld.

SPEAKER_02

How about you? Uh actually I've played Power World quite a bit. Um, me and my fiance, we have uh a few shared worlds that we've played, and we're just about at like 100% on one of them. Just gotta beat one more boss. Um, I like it. I really do enjoy the game. Um I will say, as somebody who played the game early on when it first came out to now, they've changed a lot. I do think Nintendo had some small claims to uh the initial lawsuit, because some of the pals that are there, if you look at like more the model than anything, are very close to Pokemon. Like there is one in particular uh that I can't not see, and that would be the pal Anubis. He's basically an Egyptian Lucario. See. So I I get where they started it. I don't care for where they tried to take it because Nintendo eventually put patents down on the idea of catching monsters and commanding them to do things. I thought that was declined. It was passed initially. It got passed initially. Uh, there were a few different patents in there. So Nintendo got the idea of uh gliding uh Pokemon to be patented, so they had to change the way that their gliders in Power World worked. Um initially in Power World, you could throw the Powell Ball out when you were summoning, so you could basically aim where you wanted your guy to spawn. Nintendo patented that because I think of oh, what was that? Took place in the past Pokemon, and it was one of the first ones. I can't think of it. It was Pokemon Arceus. Okay. Yeah, I think they do something similar where you can throw out the Pokeball and spawn the Pokemon there. So they patented that, so Pyrode had to change that. Um and what there was one other one that they had to change as well, but I can't think about it. All the patents initially got passed in the US market.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

And then Nintendo did a dum-dum. They decided to fight the US government over the tariffs. Uh, what happened there? So basically, when the Supreme Court ruled Trump's tariffs as illegal, not that we can go back and change all the costs and everything that went into it, but Nintendo's like, oh, well, since these are illegal and we lost sales because we had to raise our prices, the US government owes us money. So they tried suing the government. And I believe that lawsuit's still going through uh currently. But you know what happens when you piss off the government that's in charge of your patents? No. They start to look deeper. Uh-oh. So I think the first time those patents passed, it was a quick like glow, yep, yep, yep. But now somebody actually went in and looked at those Nintendo patents, and they're like, oh wait, Nintendo can't have a monopoly over capture and monsters and commanding them. Nintendo can't do this. A lot of those patents got uh discontinued effectively. Oh, dang. Yeah, no, it was it was intense for the last uh two years between Power World and uh Nintendo. It's I'm not gonna lie when I say it's part of a reason, one part of a reason why I haven't gone a Switch. I used to be a big Nintendo uh fanboy and used to have all their different consoles, but the Switch 2. I don't know, Nintendo doesn't feel like the same company they used to be to me. Like what's changed to you? I feel like they I feel like they don't care about the games for the gamers anymore. I think they're more focused on bottom lines now and just getting content put out. Um some of the things in particular, too, that just irked me the wrong way is uh the idea of oh, if you buy a Switch 2, you're not buying the Switch 2. You're buying a license to play games on the Switch 2. And that license can be revoked at any moment if you do something Nintendo doesn't like. So it's gone to the point where certain consoles have been completely bricked by Nintendo because somebody let their friend borrow a game, but that game's uh basically that game's key was already put into one Switch, so now Nintendo's computer or whatever looks at it registered the game in another one, and it's like, oh, you're stealing. You're you can no longer play your Switch, and people have had to call Nintendo and basically argue with Nintendo to get their Switch 2 uh to be able to be usable again because Nintendo just has to hit a button.

SPEAKER_00

Could you imagine trying to hit argue with Nintendo? I feel like that's uh talking to a brick wall.

SPEAKER_02

I I've heard in some cases um it went well and they only needed to basically show picture proof of the game and the switches and stuff like that, and their Nintendo took care of it, but I've also heard from other ones where it was the fight. And it was a big fight to try and get this going. So no, I don't I don't think they care about the gamers anymore. I mean, at the point where you're selling a console and you're telling us you we don't have the right to own that console. We're more or less just borrowing it from them.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, that's kind of where a lot of gaming's going nowadays, I feel like.

SPEAKER_02

No, I feel that like a lot of digital gaming in particular. Um yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean also the extra downloads and everything, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Well, I mean, a big big one on the Switch 2 is a lot of games are uh not even on the cards anymore. If you buy the physical card, it will be a uh basically a key. So you pop the card in, you'll download the game still online, but as long as the game cards in, you have the key to play that game.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_02

And a lot of that goes down from what they're saying, uh, memory. The SD cards uh that they use for the switches are too small for some of these larger games.

SPEAKER_00

Ooh. I haven't gotten a switch to yet, but I guess I'll find out whenever I decide to upgrade.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm gonna wait till somebody buys me a switch to I'm not gonna give them my money, I don't think. But I'm not gonna lie, when I'm looking at some of these games coming out, I'm like, man, if if I had the Switch 2, I could look at Worker in a Time Remake or the GameCube uh online game library.

SPEAKER_00

I think somebody buys you the Switch 2, but they forgot to give you the actual cartridge. They just give you a blank cartridge. There's nothing inside the hardware.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you plug it in, flags Nintendo, they just break your console. Yeah, exactly. But yeah, no, um it it is interesting the the game and field as a whole right now. I mean, and then not sure if you've heard of the big push, but in Europe and in parts of America, there's a legal push for stop killing games.

SPEAKER_00

And a lot of that goes down to I've heard bits and pieces about it, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I personally kind of agree with it. Like the main idea is if you have an online only game that you paid money for, the game company shouldn't be allowed to just decide, all right, we're turning this game off. With no safety net for the players, no refunds, nothing like that. Uh, if I remember correctly, I believe it was the crew that started it. Uh, 10-year-old game still had a good amount of players playing the original crew, but it didn't have an offline single-player mode, it didn't have any kind of mode to play if servers were down. And when the company shut it down, it was just a dead game. People spent money on this. And the way I look at it, uh, especially because uh when we would have played games uh younger, when you had a physical copy, as long as you took care of that, it should last. It should be something that in 20 years' time, you still have the console, you still have the game, it still works, you plug it in, you can play it. So with all these digital ones, it's it's up in the air at this point if the company decides they don't want to do it anymore.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I feel like that's where gaming's going together, because I think the idea of having a physical copy is dying out, both just with media in general. You think in movies, movies are now a lot more streaming, people don't have DVDs or Blu-rays anymore. I think games are right behind it. I I'm curious to see how much pushback the gamings will have. I feel like most of the pushback will come from maybe millennials and Gen Z, but what about the generation after that? It wouldn't surprise me if maybe in our lifetime there's a point to where what we're arguing about now, as far as you know, that movement becomes reality. I just don't know if there's enough pushback to warrant that continuing. As much as I kind of agree with you in regards to I think we should, if we buy it, we should own it kind of thing.

SPEAKER_02

No, and then I do think you're right too, because a big aspect of it right now is Millennials, uh Gen Z, where you do see a big push from them right now. Um, and even Gen X. I know that they've been pushing too. The ones in charge of the laws, though, the ones who are currently lead in our government aren't those generations really. Right. We we're trying to convince the boomer generation, the silent generation, even, why a video game and rights to video games matter.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Like in that, and a lot of times, like I don't know if you've ever talked to some of uh your elder family members and try and tell them a video game, but when I've tried to talk to my grandparents about them at any age, it was well, why do you need that? What it it's just a TV thing. It's like there's a there's a disconnect.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. And that's I just don't see nothing stopping it from happening, unfortunately. But I don't know, we'll see.

SPEAKER_02

Now I know you're a big Pokemon fan, but I'm curious if you've ever heard of a free-to-play fan-made game that's currently in the works. It's called Pokemon Void. Okay. It is made by a YouTuber and a small team. Uh let me actually find that name of the YouTuber. But um, what he's been doing for the past year, two years now, is he makes custom Pokemon for his subscribers. So he'll he'll take a comment or um something that you leave on any of the uh videos, Facebook. He'll pick your comment, he'll be like, hey, I saw that comment. Let me make a custom Pokemon for you. He'll spin a whole bunch of wheels, figure out how many evolution lines your Pokemon has. Does it have any gimmicks to it? Um is it legendary? Is it normal? And the YouTube channel that's uh involved in this is called uh Pokedex Fillers. He's been making so many of these custom Pokemon, custom types, he's even made I think two or three new types of Pokemon for these custom Pokemons.

SPEAKER_01

Uh being to the type chart.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So I know there's uh Cosmic, which is a type in uh his game, and then there's another one that's an interesting one because it's rarer than shiny in his game. There are certain Pokemon that you can catch corrupted, and a corrupted Pokemon is, I believe, stronger than the normal version, it can go above level 100.

SPEAKER_00

So is it like a shadow Pokemon?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, I think that would be one of the easier ways to explain it, except you're not gonna open its heart or anything. So think of shadow as the idea is like, oh, there's more power, there's more this, but it's definitely something wrong with it.

SPEAKER_00

So you can never fix the corruption, I guess.

SPEAKER_02

But you wouldn't want to, because think about it. If you have a team of five normal Pokemon, all level 100, your corrupted Pokemon, I think, can hit 125.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I get that point. So I was just kind of curious if there was like any point to trying to change it back or whatever. The work behind the mechanic.

SPEAKER_02

I think the idea on it is because from what I understand, it's rarer than shiny. So it's supposed to be more like you're doing a shiny hunt for these corrupted Pokemon. Right. Um, I also know because he has a demo of the game up now. I don't know if anyone's finished a challenge yet, but in the demo, in your hometown, you're able eventually to own your own gym, and you become a gym leader. Through the ranks, there's a challenge. Whoever is the first person to beat the last level corrupted trainers with proof will get, or the first two people will get custom Pokemon made for them as a uh as a reward, and that we put into the game.

SPEAKER_00

So what kind of Pokemon would you try to get made if you could?

SPEAKER_02

Oh I would probably want a two-stage uh two evolution, maybe with a mega evolution, probably and this is gonna this one might be a little bit weird, but I'd probably go uh water grass, you know, watergrass type.

SPEAKER_00

We haven't had one of those in a while.

SPEAKER_02

Well, we've only had one of those at all, period. So how about you? If you could get a custom Pokemon made, what would you try for?

SPEAKER_00

Hmm. That's always a tough one. I think what would I want? Because there's so much to choose from, right? Like you could do ananemic objects, you could reel Pokemon. I mean, I'm always a sucker for dog Pokemon, so I would definitely do a dog type Pokemon. I would want it as a ground type though. Ooh. It's pure ground.

SPEAKER_02

That would be a strong one too, because if you do dog, I could see them still trying to get some of like dog speed in there. So like a speedy ground type would be fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like maybe something weaker than Escadrill, maybe on the same level as Drillbur, if I'm thinking about it, but maybe a little bit more bulk to it. So I don't think it should have an evolution, though.

SPEAKER_02

Just single stage.

SPEAKER_00

That's what I'm thinking. It just depends on the dog they choose from. No, I can I can for dog Pokemon. Either that or ooh, I forgot about this one. A hammerhead shark.

SPEAKER_02

I think that should be a Pokemon. Ooh, what typing would you make that? Just water.

SPEAKER_00

Man, water is so boring. You know, I like the idea of Electros to where it's should like a water type, but it's actually electric. I don't know. I kind of want to maybe mix up the type on that one. Maybe a fighting type. That's what I think. Because it's a hammerhead.

SPEAKER_02

That would be fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And maybe the ability is water absorbed, so that way it kind of resonates with it's supposed to be from the water kind of thing.

SPEAKER_02

I could see that. That'd be a fun Pokemon too, especially if it's only a single stage.

SPEAKER_00

Would you want to give it any mode wanna evolution?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, evolution. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We're not turning it into an octopus, right?

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no. Maybe it turned into like a do deo where it has two heads instead. Like one's a hammer, one's a screwdriver. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that'd be fun.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Let's see.

SPEAKER_02

That'd be our closing bell. So before I have to let you go, I have one more question for you. Oh, where's my drink though, dude? Oh, it's been sitting in front of you this whole time. With 152 rare candies in there.

SPEAKER_00

It's supposed to be 151. You gotta redo the drink, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Alright.

SPEAKER_00

151.

SPEAKER_02

Now, before I let you go, I do have another question on this uh the hammerhead shark idea.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

For your custom, any gimmicks? And if so, which one or why?

SPEAKER_00

Uh when you say gimmicks, are we talking about like evolution gimmicks or just gimmicks in general?

SPEAKER_02

So like Z move, uh Gigantamax. Uh I'm not gonna say Traversation because that one there just is something that any of the uh Pokemon can do. Um, but Giganamax, uh Z Move, Mega Evolution.

SPEAKER_00

Uh to evolve it, you have to use strength. Ooh. You have to teach it strength and uh has to use it one time outside, and then the next time it levels up, it evolves. Ooh, that would be a fun one. I know HMs are kind of dead at this point, but I still got some love for strength. I always liked it as a normal move.

SPEAKER_02

Realistically, I think uh the strength puzzles as annoying as they were were always kind of fun at the end of the day.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it wasn't as annoying as rock climb or rock smash or whirlpool. Those were those were like uh they're not useful in battle and they're a pain in the butt to teach, so I never liked those.

SPEAKER_02

That's why the uh new generations will never know the wonder of an HM slave.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know if I should be excited for them or sad. It's kind of a mixed feeling. It's like the experience share. It's like you have to kind of go through, but I'm kind of glad you got something better.

SPEAKER_02

Ah, that is all fair. Well, we gotta be closing up now. So let me go ahead before we head out. Would you mind reintroducing yourself one more time? Tell us who you are and where we can find you.
