SPEAKER_01

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. I can't believe what movie I just finished seeing. I know I'm opening the tavern a little late this time. I'm sorry, everyone, but the open sign is in. I'll get behind the bar. I'm sure somebody's gonna walk in, but my goodness. Oh my goodness. Avatar. I can't wait to actually get to start talking about this one. Like that move. Ooh. Sorry about that. Hello, sir. How can I help? Hello, Adam.

SPEAKER_04

Hi, Annie. You know May I in may I offer you some cactus juice? It's the crunchist.

SPEAKER_01

You know, actually, yeah, I'll take some cactus juice. I'm assuming since you're bringing this, you you saw the movie?

SPEAKER_04

I did. I've watched it twice.

SPEAKER_03

Avatar. Oh, Avatar.

SPEAKER_04

The last airbender?

SPEAKER_02

No, it's is it the last airbender or is it just Avatar Aang?

SPEAKER_04

No, it's Avatar Aang, The Last Airbender. Okay. It's Avatar Aang.

SPEAKER_02

Whatever the symbol with the two dots is the last airbender. Oh, okay.

unknown

No.

SPEAKER_02

Pretty good movie, I gotta say it.

SPEAKER_01

No, it was. I mean for me, I grew up on Avatar. Like through elementary school and middle school, I grew up watching Avatar the Last Airbender into some of Korra. And I really appreciated what they did in this movie. So did I. Let me ask you, see you said you watched it twice this week.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, I initially watched it because I'm like, I I saw it on Paramount Plus, and I saw it was like 94 minutes. I had some time to kill. I saw some of the shorts of like when seen like the birds going out and didn't have a context of it, like recruiting team Avatar to help Aang in some sort of thing. And I saw like a little bit of Saka explains like who he was like like what he did for uh for Aang and like when the the three kids were seeing like, oh, you know the avatar, it's like oh now you think I'm cool kind of bit. And then that got me to the point, it's like I saw it on Paramount Plus, and I'm like, oh cool. I had some time to kill, I watched it, and then I sent it out, or I asked you if you saw it. You hadn't seen it, but I got around to it eventually. Yeah. No, I a few days later, I think.

SPEAKER_01

Like I said, I do appreciate what the animators and creators did with giving us a more grown version of the cast. It is only available through Paramount Plus. As of right now, there are no plans for any kind of theatrical release, and when it did release, it was only in two theaters in the United States. One in New York, one in Los Angeles.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, that sucks.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, and that and that was because of a big, I think, fan push to even have a theatrical, but I don't know, like it feels like Paramount doesn't want this movie to actually get the support. Because no theatrical means no money coming. And no physical versions are planned right now. So you can't just go to Walmart down the road and buy this movie. It's only gonna be streamable.

SPEAKER_02

So I don't know, kinda sucks because then that go ahead. No, no, you're fine.

SPEAKER_04

That kind of sucks because then that kind of forces you to get Paramount Plus, but because of where I work, I get Paramount Plus for free, so yeah.

SPEAKER_01

No, yeah. I mean, I just don't know what the plan was on this one. Like, maybe they didn't want it to do well enough so they don't have to do more of this in the future. Because like if there aren't sales numbers or anything, like it's not gonna look good to investors, but at the same point, the fans want this. So, like, why don't you give the fans the ability to support this? You know, like and it's it's a great project, honestly. I wouldn't mind if they did do a Blu-ray release and I could get a physical case to keep in my uh place. But going into more of the actual movie, Adam, what was your favorite part?

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna say the very end of the movie.

SPEAKER_04

I mean the very, very like last scene of the movie was probably my favorite. There are many great scenes in it, but just seeing all like that that Oppo was not the last air bison. There were so many more with when they found that one lost area.

SPEAKER_01

What I appreciated about that is they finally did the show and not tell. Because in Korra, we find out that at some point Aang did find more bison. And I think there was a point in the comics where he was supposed to show it, but it was never like actually animated or shown. So I do appreciate that at the end of the movie, yes, we see Aang taking the new, newly formed air acolytes, who do grow into the ones you see in Korra, by the way. Oh, okay. You see uh uh you see him taking the air acolytes, and they end up on their search for air nomad relics, they stumble across that herd of bison. Which I thought that was such a sweet scene.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it was a good like I think the that scene was very beautifully done. Good way to wrap up the movie and sort of send us off to see how the air how they the air bison came back, or really they never left per se, they were just nicely tucked away, hidden from the rest of the world.

SPEAKER_01

Now, one scene that I really enjoyed, and I actually got into a debate with my fiance about this, because she said it was a retcon, and I don't think it was. But the scene where the new character Tagoth is shown teaching Avatar Aang how with the power of two airbenders you can achieve flight. Okay. Now, where this debate went back and forth was it is a retcon to a villain in core of season three. He achieves true flight. Now we went back and forth on this, but what I point out is this isn't true flight, this is still airbending that requires two master airbenders to harmonize, and together they can use each other's air currents to be able to fly with each other. But again like a human boomerang, very much, and that's why you see a lot of the times they're kind of oscillating around each other when they were flying in this scene.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So and I thought that was really cool. I didn't think it was a retcon, I just don't think it was something that one the future airbenders would be able to perform right away, because a lot of them aren't true masters of airbending. Tenzin probably would be able to, but that would require Tenzin to have Aang, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Which isn't possible. Yeah, I'm unfortunate.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_01

Another one that I think this is just a uh point against Aang. But went back and forth a little bit because with the with the islands of the dead lion turtles. My fiance brought up, she feels like it's Rick Kond, or it's just like weird storytelling, because why wouldn't Aang have left any of this behind? Why wouldn't any of the Lion Turtles be known for the next avatar? And what I brought up is realistically in Korra, not a lot's left behind by Aang for the next Avatar. He didn't leave a lot of books or scrolls for Korra to be able to learn from.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

So no, it's just a interesting take because it's just another one, I guess in my opinion, like one of those like kind of failures for Aang, as far as like leaving behind something for his next incarnation.

SPEAKER_02

If that makes any sense.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. Yeah, it makes some sense, yes.

SPEAKER_01

Now, a big debate I actually heard about in the creative process of this story was the ages that they wanted the cast to be. Not only the ages, but in the timeline, what should be happening? So at a point in the storytelling process and creating this, there was a thought that they were gonna do it in their 30s, not in their 20s.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Following the timeline, Aang and Katara's first two kids would have been born already. And Katara would have been pregnant with Tensen.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

Part of the So this happened, this takes place before they have kids then. So it that's what it appears to be. They're probably early 20s, maybe.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I think it is, like 20s, 25s. Yeah. What becomes interesting about the thought? So allegedly part of the reason they didn't want to do it is because they wanted to keep Team Avatar looking strong and powerful, and if Katara's pregnant, they might have to sideline her a little bit more, then allowing her to actually be full Katara. Right. So that's part of the reason why they decided to age the story down a bit, so they didn't deal with that at all. And I think in some ways that's really good because we get to see all of these benders more or less at their peak.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, you get to see one of also one of my favorite parts is like when they're when Ang is going out to the mountain to search for air avatar that's like been lost to time is when he's sending out the birds. One, I love how when the when the Fire Nation person is reading the scroll to Zuko, it's like Avatar Aang has no chill. It's like it's so funny. Just the way he wrote the message. It's like, yep, that sounds like Aang just writing a message to a friend, not thinking that it would be read out loud. In court one, and then like in the court. It's like, okay. How like how chill Aang is completely when he's reading it. It's like it sounded like it was written by Young Aang and not this Aang, because it Aang in this one is a a lot more mature, and he's searching for relics to like hold on to his past, like to like bring back or at least have some record of the like the air nomads, and he's also doing it alone. A lot of times he's not telling I don't think he's telling Korra where he's going most of the time.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry, Katara. I apologize for that.

SPEAKER_04

I don't think he's completely telling her all the stories or telling everything with it. At least that's what I think I picked up on. But also when Toth is fighting like the metal vendors, like, okay, how about try to make me use my hands this time, and the the fight scene is maybe 30 seconds, minute long. It's like, I'm the greatest airbender, it's like, and now I'm bored. Yep.

SPEAKER_01

No, that one's fun. Here's the thing that's interesting about though if Katara was kept pregnant. Alright. Now follow me. The story almost makes a little bit more sense. Because Aang's drive to help Tagoth after they free him is he wants to revive his people.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Now, if Katara had already given birth to Boomy, who is a non-bender, and I think it's Kara, I can't remember her name, but the second uh child of Aang and Katara's, she's a waterbender. Okay. Right. So what would have what almost makes more sense for Aang's drive to bring his people back is if he already had two kids and he's not having any airbenders. Not knowing his third kid is gonna be the next airbender or the first airbender born in over a hundred years. It would almost make more sense for this drive of, well, I'm gonna resurrect my people. This is my last chance to resurrect my people. I tried doing it the old-fashioned way, it's not working. But in aging him down, I still understand the drive, oh, I want to revive my people, but I don't feel like it would be as strong as it is the way that they portray it. Like, I don't think he'd be making some of the same decisions in his 20s.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Like if if that makes sense. It does.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. Do you think it's better with Katara at her prime?

SPEAKER_04

I do, because you actually get used to Katara was a strong water bender at the very end of Avatar, the last airbender, but seeing her like a little stronger, seeing her take on Taga after like realized like oh the one thing that took me by surprise, and it there were some little hints, like when he was crushing, like when Aang had to stop him from crushing the ships of the denied. Like he he started to show a little bit of his true colors there, but luckily Aang stopped him. Honestly, I didn't I didn't see him being the villain of the story. I thought it was going to be the denied that was going to be the ultimate big bad with it, but it makes a lot of sense uh going what Taga went through. I mean, seeing him go to war or being having the Avatar send him and his fellow airbenders out to be peacekeepers, which essentially the airbenders at the time were the peacekeepers of the world, and with the air nation or not the air nation, the earth nation separating from the rest of the group and starting a big war and seeing the airbenders being completely killed in that. I can understand why Taga became the way he was, because like that changes people seeing your brethren die your brethren die. Yeah. Having her fight him and like seeing how strong he was against three benders and Sokka was kinda cool to see. No, it really was.

SPEAKER_01

The fact that like he feels like one of the strongest airbenders we've seen on the screen. Right.

SPEAKER_04

He was able to take out Aang when he was in the Avatar state. He caused him to leave the Avatar state at least once just by like knock literally knocking the wind out of him.

SPEAKER_01

No, Taga versus here would have been an interesting battle. Because realistically, I think those are two of the strongest, most aggressive airbenders that we've been shown. And what's fun with those characters is you realize that out of the four elements, air is one of the strongest. And one of the most versatile.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, because it it they can have a force of they can have the power of a hurricane, but be as gentle as gentle as a breeze.

SPEAKER_01

Well, what's insane is some of the precision. A airbender later in the uh story has the ability to pull the air out of your lung and circulate your head in a vacuum.

SPEAKER_04

Kind of like the blood bending that the w that a waterbender can do.

SPEAKER_01

Similar, but blood bending doesn't necessarily end with you suffocating because you can't breathe. Good point. Puts your head in a vacuum of the air that he took out of your lungs until you die. Oh, that's a sucky way to die. Airbending can be brutal. I think it almost more goes into why the monks were such a uh peaceful nation. Because I think they understood a lot of the complexity of what their art of Bendin can do if not used properly. It's why you see most airbenders, so Tenzin and the Airbenders that we have seen before, fight very defensively. A lot of times it's about parrying or getting around, avoiding the attack, not a head on we're gonna go after you, but then you get Tagoth, you get the here, and they have a completely different mentality about airbending and that's uses more or less on a battlefield.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_01

I also think Tagoth's uh reasoning's not a hundred percent wrong on the idea of like he has a duty to his people. And I do agree to that is like okay, you can have a duty to your people, you can want to bring your nation back at no matter the cost. But I think where his theory or his thoughts were conflicting was expecting the avatar, no matter what avatar, to agree with him.

SPEAKER_04

See it the same way.

SPEAKER_01

Because even though both avatars he dealt with were original airbender avatars, the thing is, is the avatar's duty isn't to the air nation, it's to the world. So at no point would any sane avatar go with a plan that's not for the world. You even see that with Avatar Roku and Sozin when they grow up. Roku didn't necessarily stop Sozin. I think he did once, but at the same point, he never went with Sozin's plan for the Fire Nation invasion. And Sozin knew he'd have to wait for the death of Roku before he could do anything. Right. So, and in a lot of ways, I think that's the situation Tagoth found him. In twice is yes, he has an airbender avatar, and he should be able to convince them, I'll go with my nation, but at the same point, the avatar is more than their one nation. I think that's why we saw both avatars say, No, Togoth, this isn't the way. Right.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, you even see when when Aang gets the staff from Taga that he was ready to uh do whatever it takes to take down Taga. It wasn't until he saw the the the little flag of the air nation and of the that staffed him out of doing that and finally took and he just broke the staff because ultimately that was the right thing to do. It's like Harry break he could have used the elder wand to in to uh achieve great things, but he chose to break or he didn't break it, he chose to in the movie he breaks it in the in the book, he placed it back in Dumbledore's tomb, he chose he took chose to do the h take the higher road, just like Aang did, just because like it was that but Aang was ready to end Taga.

SPEAKER_01

No, I do wish they explained that a little bit more as to why the staff was corrupt in him. I know it's probably because Taga's energy corrupted the staff, but that is one of my critiques with this movie, is the second half of it, they didn't really take the time to explain anything. So get in all the way up to the Lion Turtles and the fight between Togoth and Team Avatar. Taga takes Oppa. For some reason, APA just looks sad, but APA just goes with it, they don't explain that at all. Right. I I was trying to wonder that too.

SPEAKER_04

It's like maybe no is very loyal to Aang, if I'm not mistaken, so I don't know what would cause that. The only thing I can think of, like maybe he Taga as superior than Aang, but Opa's been with Aang since he was a little bison in and everything, so that wouldn't explain anything of that nature, it's just I guess storyline convenience.

SPEAKER_01

Not only that, because there's there's a lot of this, right? Because now we go into the spirit realm, we jump into the ocean spirit's mouth to go to the spirit realm. Yeah, okay, cool. Yes. I like the callback, I like the idea of this. We know we need to go to this temple. Well, the temple's right above us. Alright, makes sense. The temple allegedly was supposed to be by the lion turtles. Great. Yeah. Togoth is already there. How he already got there, how he has the access to the spirit realm like that doesn't get explained. He's just there. And then the next little bit we have is we find out the portal that he's pulling the temple through leads to Republic City.

SPEAKER_02

See now we're just at Republic City. Great. Why?

SPEAKER_04

Storyline convenience? Maybe lazy riding.

SPEAKER_01

Well, they wanted to have a Republic City whole situation, and I get that. But like, yeah, just time after time, even to the point of bringing up the battle, and the staff was like corrupt and ang, why?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like there they're just things that felt like we just glossed over. I thought we'd be in the spirit realm for a good 15-20 minutes. Not enough time to have a little back and forth with a spirit, and then we're out. Right. Like, if if anything, even following Korra a bit. I'm sorry to interrupt, but even following Korra a bit before you can go through another part of the spirit realm, you kind of gotta travel a bit. It's not one-to-one nether to overworld in Minecraft, but it's pretty similar. There's a physical distance in the spirit realm you can travel that equates to the distance in the real world.

SPEAKER_02

But we're not we're not doing any of that.

SPEAKER_01

We got story convenience. We gotta wrap up the film.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe if they would have made the maybe if they would have made the movie a little bit longer, they probably would have more time to like explain a little bit more. But again, it is 90 minute 94 minutes long, which is still a pretty good, like pretty long movie. But yeah, there's a lot of like just storyline convenience of like okay, we gotta get from point A to point B the quickest way. I kind of wish they would have stayed in the spirit realm a little bit longer and get more of the gorilla armadillo spirit. That would and by the way, that is the name of that's the what the subtitles. I watched it with subtitles. That's what they called it. Was uh the gorilla armadillo or the armadillo gorilla. Okay, and I I kind of like that character, and I wish we would have a little bit more time with him.

SPEAKER_00

Just remember, he didn't have a lot of time with you, but he loves you. Yeah, you don't need to say it back. He was fun, he was a fun little character. I did enjoy that.

SPEAKER_01

But it just felt like the spirit world and the whole idea of even doing that was just a cheap story device to get them back.

SPEAKER_04

Because yeah, because Haga destroyed their airship. Without the airship, they probably couldn't have gotten through it. But then again, even if they didn't destroy the airship, it would take them so much long so much time to get through that the eternal the the in eternal storm. It was just a nice little plot point convenience that they chose to get the ocean spirit to get them to point A from point A to point B. I do like I do like when they were in the spirit realm for that short time, like you saw they still kept the same voices. It was be kind of cool if they when they had Aang as Young Aang have the same voice as Young Aang, but still it was kind of cool to see him with his adult voice, but his his the body that it was in Avatar the Last Airbender. But I like how they each of the members of Team Avatar look different, just like Toph being a baby, having Saka and Aang be like where they were in Avatar the Last Airman Bender, and then you had Korra and Zuko being what they look like in Legend of Korra, and I was watching a little bit of short, uh explains like, oh, why is Toph the baby? Why are Zuko and Guitara older? Because it the theory is that because maybe Katara and Zuko, because uh how mature their duties are and how much weight they are bearing cause them to be more mature. And you have Aang still being in his state of when he was in Avatar the last April, same with Sokka and with Oh help me out here. Toph being baby, it was the theory was like she's more childlike of the or she's more baby-like of the four of the four core.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, which is fair. I mean, one way you could look at it is Toph in some senses got babied most of her life by her parents because she was blind. And through that life of being so sheltered, now that she has more control of her life, she kind of acts a little recklessly, a little childlike. So we could definitely see that. Sokka's always acted a little bit younger, he's always been a great strategist, but if you compared the way Katara acted to Sokka, it makes sense that he's more in a teenage body. Katara and Zuka, in a lot of ways, carried a lot of the weight of the world on their shoulders based on the way that they grew up. Katara, in a lot of ways, took on the mothery role of Team Avatar and was always concerned with making sure everyone was okay, and it seems like she continued that into diplomacy. Zuka was the banished prince, later to become Fire Lord. So the idea of like, okay, this is some of their upbringing and how they're reacting in the spirit world. Again, the story said the spirit world's just out of whack.

SPEAKER_04

Right. Ever since, but it was only out of whack because Taga entered into it and his energy corrupted it.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

According to the spirit.

SPEAKER_01

Now, one thing that was uh fun for me is you brought up the uh voice actors. What did you think of the new cast? Voice and the characters.

SPEAKER_03

I liked it. It it it did sound very similar to Avatar The Last Airbender, but there was definitely a difference in them.

SPEAKER_04

I was almost convinced that Zuko was played by the original actor until I actually saw the credits and who who actually voiced them.

SPEAKER_01

No, I do appreciate the effort in this recast. I was a little bit worried. Because I feel like we could have used the same actors and got in the more mature voice.

SPEAKER_04

They're old enough to be able to they're old enough to be able to be able to voice their their respective characters in that age.

SPEAKER_01

But I will say I did believe this was Team Avatar more grown up. The voice actor change really didn't affect it too much. For me, I'm not sitting here being like, that doesn't sound like Aang, Sokka, Katara, or Zuko. Like to me, it's like okay, this is what they sound like as they grew. And I did actually appreciate that aspect of the storytelling, because it does give me a better idea of like, okay, how serious are some of these characters in their later years? What were they doing? I think you brought it up earlier, even like Toph at her dojo, because that was a really cool little scene that they did was uh showing her dojo where she trains metal benders, right? Because we know down the road she's gonna open up the uh Republic City police force of metal benders, so we're seeing the beginnings of that. We're seeing we didn't see a lot of Republic City, but I did enjoy seeing the beginnings of Republic City. I can start to see how it turned into the Republic City of Korra. I would definitely be looking forward to another Avatar Aang movie to continue the their story. I think it'd be fun to see more of this in between for the Avatars. Not sure. I want to see what happens in Seven Havens, but like a Korra-themed movie might be warranted down the road too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Wait, what you brought up Seven Havens a couple times, like off before we started before I entered the tavern. When is that supposed to actually take place?

SPEAKER_01

We don't have a time frame yet. It is after Korra's death. But the way the trailer kind of makes it out, it almost feels like the avatar had didn't immediately incarnate. Now, I could be wrong on that, and it could be immediately after Korra's demise, we have the new uh avatars. Because there are, it looks like two of them, they are twins, which I have a lot of theories to talk about on that. But it does feel like a significant amount of time may have passed between the avatars and the way the trailer room brings it up, the world doesn't need or doesn't want the avatar right now, but it needs the avatar, which is an interesting tick. Okay. Now my big my big questions are is Cora, what did you do, girl? What what did you do? But I do I have theories as to what might have even played into it, but I do think that will be discussions for another day, because I love talking about Avatar and as we get closer to Avatar the Seven Havens. I'll definitely want to talk more about that. But we are running close on time, Adam. Yeah, we are for Avatar Inc. What would you give the rated out of ten?

SPEAKER_04

Out of ten, I would say nine out of ten. I I well honestly was not disappointed with this movie. To be honest with you, maybe you have a little bit of it could have been improved in some way. I just can't think of it. Like but again, maybe make it like 10 maybe 15 minutes longer and give a little bit more time in the spirit realm with them because they did they did give up quite a bit of time of like with him fighting in the air temple after he was putting some of the relics there. You got enough time in Republic City and in right after there. Even I they gave up quite a bit of time with on the mountainside, but probably not enough time in the spirit realm. I would love to again, I would love to have more time with our buddy that loves us, even though they don't know us for very long, the gorilla omaradillo.

SPEAKER_01

He was fun. I think if I had to rate it, I'd probably give it a 7.8 out of 10. I did enjoy it. Oh. I think the animation was gorgeous. It was very felt very authentic to the original story. I do think the first half was a lot stronger because of the time they took in explaining togo the staff and different aspects of the story and getting to catch up with everyone. The last 30 minutes, I do personally think fell apart, kind of hurt the story than helped it, just because there is a lot of assumptions made. And right, like you're saying, had they taken a little bit more time, fleshed out some of that story a little bit more, may make out just a little bit more sense, it would have easily hit like an 8 8.5 for me. Music was great, like I was said earlier, the new cast sounded great. I didn't worry about who was who when they were talking.

SPEAKER_04

The not to mention sorry, having Dave Batista voicing Taga was definitely a good move on that part. I think he like just Dave Batista definitely would embody that role. Plus, you saw how how buffed that guy was. Definitely, like, I don't think I don't think another actor could have brought Taga to life as Dave Batista did.

SPEAKER_01

Now, I do love the introduction of Togoth as another airbender. Yes. They explained why he was sealed really well. I again liked the first half of the movie for the most part. One idea that I was worried about, especially when they started bringing back airbenders, was how do we circle back to Korra to there being no airbenders again? And I like that they cleaned it up super quick. But again, if we could have explained why the staff that gave them the power being destroyed all of a sudden removed their power. I'm assuming it's some spiritual uh spiritual world stuff, but stuff you gotta just go with for the uh story. Um definitely do recommend it to people. Very fun watch, especially if you watch the original Avatar The Last Airbender. Streaming only on Paramount Plus, so if you don't have that, find a buddy who does.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Good thing we're buddies, right? Good thing we're buddies. But Adam, starting to get a little late.

SPEAKER_02

You wanna go ahead and close us out.

SPEAKER_04

From very hot and humid, almost getting hit by a topical depression, Bertha. Be careful over there, buddy.

SPEAKER_01

And from a very hot and dry Arizona. This is Danny with our Tavern Talks, and that is once again another show.
