Inherited Stories
We were all born into a system we didn’t create — but we all play a role in whether it continues.
Inspired by Why Don’t You See What I See: Breaking the Cycle of Systemic Racism, authored by co-host Adia Holmes, "Inherited Stories" extends the conversation beyond the page. Co-hosted by Adia and Elisha, this podcast creates space with grace for growth — inviting candid dialogue about systemic racism, blind spots, and the behaviors that sustain or interrupt inequity.
This is not a space for shame or silence — it’s a space for clarity, courage, and consistent action.

Have you ever considered that the way you see the world, especially as it relates to racial difference, was shaped long before you ever had any choice in the matter?
SPEAKER_01That our deepest beliefs, especially the ones that we trust, without question, maybe they were given to you as opposed to something you chose on purpose.
SPEAKER_00So, like an inherited thing. Like an inherited thing. And so, what if those inherited beliefs don't just shape how we respond to each other, but also shape the systems that we live in. Because these systems were never neutral, they were built on ideas about race.
SPEAKER_01And these ideas about race, we didn't create them. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00But we were all forced to carry them. Absolutely. And so this is what we mean by inherited stories. So let us formally welcome you to what we hope will become one of your new favorite podcasts: Inherited Stories, Conscious Futures. We're your co-hosts. I'm Adea. And I'm Elisha. And this is a podcast that's not about explaining racism, but it's about exploring what it feels like to live inside it and then talking honestly about that. This podcast is like an icebreaker, right? Because so many of us want to have the hard conversations, but don't always know how to navigate that. And so we end up avoiding them altogether.
SPEAKER_01And we know that avoidance doesn't solve any problems.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. And change, which is what we all want, does not happen without pressure. So we choose to lean in. We choose to lean into the hard conversations. We not only welcome them, but we normalize them. It is okay to talk about the hard thing. And the goal here in this podcast, it's not about our conversation, it's about what happens after. The conversations that you have in your own social circles.
SPEAKER_01We're also not here to debate. We're not here to say who's right and who's wrong.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's enough of that.
SPEAKER_01Or trying to prove a point. We're well aware that we don't have all the answers.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. So this is really just about jump starting the conversation and becoming more aware of what we've all inherited.
SPEAKER_01And choosing to grow from that on purpose. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00This podcast is not the whole conversation, it's the beginning of one. And so we hope you'll take what you hear and go start your own conversations because that is how we move from inherited stories to conscious futures. Sounds good.
