to
the
emperor.

the
emperor
saw
all
the
children,

walked
slowly
past
the
beautiful
plants.
Then
he
stopped
when
he
saw
Ping.
Why
is

pot
empty?
The
Emperor
asked.
Ping
bowed
his
head
and
said
I
tried
my
best,
but
the
seed
would
not
grow.
The
Emperor
smiled.
My
child,
he
said,
I
gave
each
of
you
a
boiled
seed.
It
was
impossible
for
anything
to
grow.
The
crowd
gasped.
You
are
the
only
one
who
was
honest.
And

that
reason,
you
will
be
the
next
emperor.

way.
