Hey, welcome in. It is the Super Fan Tuesday edition of I Love Mondays. There are some moving parts going on with today's show. I got a special guest on my Super Fan Tuesday. It is not Treadmill. It is not Courtney Corning. And I'm not telling you who it is, but that guest will join me about halfway through the show today. All the best to Jackson, not our Jackson, but Treadmill's Jackson. Thoughts with him? I think there's a back surgery going on today. Did I just violate HIPAA laws? Maybe. So all of our best to the Vilker family and Jackson. Hope everything goes great today. Courtney Corning, normally he would be the uh super sub on a Super Fan Tuesday, but he is uh up playing golf where you should, where what he should be doing. So he's playing golf today. Um Mammoth Dunes, maybe. He's at the at the whole project up there playing some golf. So uh I do have a special guest lined up, and that guest will join us in a little bit. Uh James uh is the first in to wish a good morning, Mike. Listening on the way to Two Oaks North Golf Course in Wyoga. Now, how many people, if you're not from Wisconsin, would pronounce Wyowega correctly? Uh yeah, if you if you know, you know. So um we also get a good morning from Eric from the Prairie. Good morning. Looks like Perkins was sent down for Lara Hamilton. Must not be that bad. I'm waiting on the uh information to come out. And uh so there they are. The roster moves. Uh the major league debut of Luis Lara is imminent. He has been called up. Blake Perkins was uh sent to Nashville, and Robert Gasser also called up. So two um multiple roster moves going on right now from the Brewer's perspective. Let me give you the details. Luis Lara, who just signed that long-term contract before he's made his appearance in Major League Baseball, will make it apparently today. Uh he has been called up from AAA Nashville, Blake Perkins, option to Nashville, and Robert Gasser, designated as the 27th man for the doubleheader, worst kept secret in the Brewers org, was uh Robert Gasser will start game two of the doubleheader tonight. So one of the things it does indicate is that there was no move made that we see yet on David Hamilton. So um he left last night's game with some hamstring tightness. They were getting an MRI this morning to try and see where he sat on that front and if he's gonna be okay. It didn't necessitate, at least to this point, a roster move. So nothing on that front from a David Hamilton uh perspective, and that's a good thing. Uh talk more about them in a little bit. So let's take you back to last night. The Brewed to 23 games over 500. They are now 56 and 33. And I want to kind of cut to the bigger picture, Chase, of the things that have been going on with this team and bring back something that I talked about before they began this stretch. There was a point in time in which the Brewers had 27 games in 27 days leading into the all-star break. So far, they're 13 and 7 in those games. A week ago, I talked about the 15 games in 14 days into the all-star break. And I said, if you gave me eight and seven right now in advance of it, I'll take it. Of those 15, the Brewers um have begun with five and two, six and two in the first eight. So I I underestimated um as to their ability to get things done. And they've been they've been really good. Now they haven't been great in in this run, even though I talk about 13 and 7 uh 20 games into this 27-game run, and even in the shorter term being uh 6 and 2 in the first eight of the 15 that would be played in 14 days. Pitching has been so impressive. Last night, Shane Drone, who didn't get help in the third inning, he finishes the night um by going into the the sixth inning. Uh he was he was my player of the game last night. Drone gets the win. He went six innings, six hits, three runs, only one of them earned on a fielding error, not very common, from Bryce Tarang. And then even another mistake in that inning from David Hamilton at third with the bases loaded and one out. He got a ground ball hit at him, and he elected to try and turn the 5-4-3 double play when he had an easy force out at home plate in front of him. Now, going home means you're not going to turn a double play, but as it turns out, it was going to be a difficult turn the way they were going. Hamilton should have should have come to home plate on that. I said it in real time. I said to Kari, uh, he's got to go home with that. And Kari looked at me like, what? Okay, I'm just talking to myself here. But yeah, he needed to go home to get the out at the plate. That was the second run. They would later in that inning get the third run, and it's 3-0. And the Brewers were doing nothing against Dustin May. I mean, second time that they've faced him, and neither time did they do any damage against Dustin May. Um, if you pitch for my team, I'd like him. I don't like him. So I mean he's he's super uh he's like he's in a fight on the mound. Uh he's shaking his head and he's grunting and and he's talking to the hitter behind their back, you know, as he walks away and he's MF and you know, the the opposition. And anyway, I'd like him if he pitched for my team. I don't like him that he pitched, especially for that team. Only could be worse if he was in Chicago. Uh, but the Brewers haven't hit him at all in the two tries. So hopefully they they won't see him again in this series. Um, but they got to the bullpen. And in getting to the bullpen, good things happen. The Brewers have found that out. If they can get to the opposing team's bullpen, it's good. And opposing teams look at the Brewers and go, okay, we should get to that bullpen. And then that that's no bargain. When the Brewers go to the bullpen and they go, Ashby, Yuribe, McGill, 7-8-9. Uh, it's I think the best three pitchers for the last three innings of game in all of baseball. They didn't have to use them that way last night. So, as it turns out, no Ashby in the game last night. And I thought that my player of the game was was Shane Drowen, but Chad Patrick, who pitched a perfect seventh and eighth, the Drowan got through six with a 30-plus pitch inning in the third, so impressive. So, what the Brewers were able to do last night is work the game with three pitchers, and today a doubleheader, Miz in the opener, and Robert Gasser in the nightcap today. Um, it's you're set up for some success here. Um, I'm gonna come back to the Brewers, but uh before I bury the lead, I'm not set up uh to make a camera change until my guest joins at about half past the hour. So let me talk about the World Cup last night. Not my realm, right? I've talked about that. It's not my area of expertise, is to talk about the World Cup. But I have watched a lot of teams play in a lot of tournaments over the course of time, whether that's the NCAA tournament, uh uh the National Football League playoffs, which is also a tournament, but nobody likes to call it that. Baseball's postseason, I'll equate it to the Packers, right? So let me draw this parallel. When the Packers were a team on the rise, early Brett Favre in the playoffs, and sometimes just getting beat by the team on the other side, and you'd watch it and go, gosh, they just aren't quite good enough. Last night, Belgium was not very close. They were the better team throughout, and from the very beginning. Shoot, they scored a nearly scored a goal 48 seconds in. They dominated the play. It was Mike Tyson last night in his prime coming out and just being the aggressor, and the US men's national team had no answers. They were outplayed, outworked, out talented at every turn. And in a sport that I don't fully grasp or have working knowledge of, it was obvious to the naked eye which team was better. And it doesn't mean that the US wasn't good because they've had a very good tournament, but it was an expanded tournament, and the USA didn't win what would have been a traditional knockout stage game, uh, which used to start at the round of 16. Am I wrong on that? Uh this year went to 32 and the USA won the in the round of 32, but not in the round of 16. So Belgium was better, better prepared, better athletes on the field. It was again neophyte, watching from the outside looking in, not my sport. Uh it wasn't close. The scoreboard reflected that, ended up 4-1. It's almost like an empty netter at the end. Uh but it wasn't close. Belgium had the lion's share of the up scoring opportunities, and and look, in a matter of short course, Canada, then Mexico, then the U.S. all eliminated on their home turf. On their home turf, out. Canada out, then Mexico out in Azteca, and then the U.S. out in Seattle. Best home field advantage you could have, gone. Now, I I commented at the end of the show yesterday about Balogun and the uh the overrule of uh rescinding the red card, and it didn't matter the player he needed to be last night. I mean, of course it mattered. My opinion won't change on that. I thought that they got it right, it should not have been a red card, but I didn't like the manner in which they got it right. FIFA had a chance to get it right on appeal and didn't. And then a second appeal that came through politics uh had FIFA change their mind on it. I didn't like that part of it. Nonetheless, it doesn't matter, it's over now, but the it was a tremendous host countries run, but it ends pretty abruptly. And the one that probably is most not surprising, maybe surprising, Mexico certainly had a chance to move forward. Uh, and England in that matchup was better. And then the USA had a chance to move forward, and they were outclassed by Belgium. So uh listen, until the Olympic Games or the Women's World Cup, that's the last I talk about soccer. Not that it doesn't deserve it, but you can find your own avenues on that. They won't come from me. I like to talk about stuff that I think I know something about, and soccer is not it for me. So let's uh I'm gonna continue to monitor going back to my uh my live tweet deck feeds on what's going on with the Brewers because uh this this matters today. 21 years old, Luis Lara is coming up to make his major league debut. Um so we will see if he is in the lineup today. Um I don't know when he arrived in St. Louis, but he's uh he he's ready to make his major league debut. A couple of weeks ago, one of the things I talked about with Luis Lara, who is uh currently on the MLB pipeline, he's number 67 in the top 100. Uh at Nashville, triple A. He's hitting 321, slashing at 432 and 470. So that is uh uh a 900 better than a 900 OPS. It's triple A. Nonetheless, he's 21 and he's making his uh major league debut at some point, we think today, as he has been called up. I would assume that he's in St. Louis, but I haven't gotten that report yet from those who are there. Adam McCalvey. And McCalvey was catching strays from Pat Murphy postgame last night. Uh, before I did uh Brood Daily after the game last night, uh in the postgame, uh there was conversation about uh if David Hamilton had to go, could they have somebody here in time? And Murphy looked up at McKelvey and said, you know, they have airplanes now um in most cities uh to fly players. He was it was not fair. He he said um he apologized to him later for treating him like he treats Mike Vasalo. Uh but so that storyline will play uh today. Matt Swanson will open game one today with uh the with the Cardinals. We we were unaware, even as of last night. Michael McGreevy is listed as uh a potential starting pitcher in either of the games today for St. Louis. Uh Mike Vasalo is is uh has delayed because of roster moves coming out with today's game notes. So I don't see today's game notes yet. Uh but the Cardinals were it's not really gamesmanship, but the the Brewers don't know who they're gonna go, but it sounds like in game one they'll go with an opener, and maybe Mike Michael McGreevy comes in after that. So the Brew will go Ms. in the 115 game, and in the 645 Robert Gasser. So as we as we sit on the current look right now, the Brew in today's standings at 56 and 33, second best record in all of baseball. They lead the Cubs who were idle yesterday by six and a half. They lead the Cardinals, who they beat now by eight and a half games. Pittsburgh is 11.5 back, Cincinnati 15.5 back. So the Cubs are at Baltimore to take on the Orioles, who are a sub-500 team. Pittsburgh is home with the Atlanta Braves, and the Reds are home with the Philadelphia Phillies. So those are the matchups. And indeed, Luis Lara is in the dugout in St. Louis, as uh Mike Fasala tweets out a picture of McCalvey and Todd Rodziak and Sophia Minert doing an interview with Luis Lara in the Brewers dugout at Bush Stadium through an interpreter. Uh so Lara is there. Haven't seen a lineup post yet. Depending on what time you're watching this, if you're watching it live, we know that we're talking about a 115 first pitch. So some three hours from now, uh, many times a lineup is out right about now, but I imagine there's a little bit of a delay in getting that going. But if we spend just a minute talking about last night's game, uh impressive in a lot of ways, but not specifically offensively impressive. Even in the seventh inning when the Brewers score their four runs, Garrett Mitchell hits a 37-foot bouncer to the third base side of the pitching mound that he's gonna beat out. And the the pitcher makes the play and throws, but it's late. And he also kind of tweaked his hammy, we think, on that play. So he was not long for the game. Sal Freelick with the hardest hit ball of the inning, a double into the right field corner. So it's second and third and nobody out. And then uh Cooper Pratt hit a ball that went uh 21 feet out in front of home plate between uh home plate and the pitcher's mound. Pitcher came in to field it, didn't field it cleanly. So now there's bases loaded and nobody out. They called it an error. If it's, I don't know. I mean, it very certainly could have been a base hit. However, if he feels it cleanly, uh he's gonna have a shot to get Pratt. It would have been a really good play. They called it an error, doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Uh, Hamilton, bases loaded and nobody out. And in the 21st pitch that he saw in his first three at bats, he went full count in his first at bat from 3-0 to 3-2 and then got a single. He went from 3-0 to 3-2 in his second at bat. First at bat struck out, second at bat singled on a 3-2, third at bat, again 3-2, after being um down in the count. He fought back from down 0-2 to 3-2 and then delivered a double into the gap in right center over the glove of Walker. Walker did a pretty good job at deking Cooper Pratt because it doesn't appear that the ball was ever going to be catchable. But Walker put his glove up and Pratt held for a moment, and then he was held at third base, and Hamilton then was held at second. And when Hamilton made the turn at second, thinking maybe he's gonna go to third, that's when he said he felt the hammy. And uh, so hamstring tightness is how they're ruling it. At least to this point, they haven't put him on the uh injured list, and he's not one of the roster moves so far, so far today. So that scored two runs, and then uh a couple of hitters, uh, well, the next hitter, uh Bryce Tarang, lined a single to left field, extending his hitting streak to nine games and scoring the other two runs. So when I say the Brewers were impressive on the mound yesterday, absolutely. Drone and Patrick and McGill, that was a beautiful outing. And the Brewers pitching is just amazing day after day. What they haven't been very good at of late is at the plate. And even in yesterday's game, they only score in the one inning, they score on uh back-to-back hits uh to get all four of their runs. But they didn't piece other things together, so there's we're still missing something from them that uh that hasn't come through of late. So hopefully they they find a little bit of that rhythm. But how exciting is it to let me go, let me backtrack a little bit on Luis Lara. Probably three weeks ago, right now, I said that the Brewers' best offensive lineup would be with Churio in left, Mitchell in center, and Lara in right field with Sal Freelick being your fourth outfielder. I'll have a note on that in a moment. Your infield would be Vaughn at third, and then Cooper Pratt at short, Tarang at second, and Bowers at first, with Ortiz being your extra outfielder, and your super utility being Hamilton and Contreras behind the plate. So here's the rub. Mitchell's been so good, and Churio has been so good, but so has Sal Freelick. Freelick has he, I mean, he had a hell of a June, and he's off to a good start in July. So other than Hamilton being unavailable, Luis Lara was sort of blocked. Now Lara's up, and one of the things that the Brewers have done very well when they brought players up is they play them. Now the interesting thing will be You didn't have a starting outfield injury. Hamilton's your third baseman. So you brought up an outfielder, sent Blake Perkins down, and that makes Lara your fourth outfielder, or is he your third outfielder? Because if he's your third, I don't know who your fourth is. Is it Sal Freelick? Is is he your fourth outfielder now? That's what I talked about a couple of weeks ago. But Sal has been so good. And one of the things we've talked about Vinny uh with Vinny Rettino is careful on chemistry here. Sal is important to what they do. Um Darren asks uh a question that I think is interesting, and that is is Sal returning to third base to at least third base at least as a backup. Keep in mind, a year ago in training camp, Sal was playing third. Um it's 18 months ago that he was playing third base. Uh Johnny Kribbitch says, love this historic stat start, yet folks want wholesale changes in Milwaukee. I don't know if they do. Some people are always wanting change. They want what's next, they want the backup quarterback, they want the backup third baseman. You know, for those who were dying for Cooper Pratt to be your shortstop over Joey, Joey Ortiz, Joey's been a better offensive threat than Cooper. I don't think that's arguable right now. Now, Cooper Pratt's gonna be a better offensive player as time goes on at shortstop, but we all want we all want to see Luis Lara guilty. Uh I have my hand raised on that because a couple of weeks ago I said he's part of your best offensive outfield. Maybe he still is. Sal Freelick has had a really good six weeks, and we see what Sal looks like when he's at his best, and he's pretty damn good. And he's a hell of an outfielder. I'll I'll tell you this Luis Lara is faster. Luis Lara is a better hitter, Luis Lara might be a better defender, but Sal Freelick is a gold glover. He runs through walls, he, you know, he he he he's Superman out there from an outfield perspective. He's a hockey player playing right field for the Brewers, not just because he played hockey, but in the way he plays the game and the position. Nothing's gonna keep him out of the lineup. He will run through the wall, he'll run over the wall, he'll run around the wall. He he's just he's quintessential hockey, playing baseball. Fun to watch. Luis Lara is probably better in all respects. Mitchell is healthy and playing a hell of a center field, and he's such a good bat. And Jackson Churio is your left fielder. So I don't know what the answer is. But Pat Murphy is gonna have some decisions to make on the daily as you roll forward with this current version of the Brewers. Because at least for now, Luis Lara is here starting today. Kid is super talented. Super talented. And he's torn it up in Nashville. So he's gonna get his I assume he'll get his first major league at bat at some point this afternoon or tonight. We haven't, I don't believe, and I'm gonna keep clicking over, I don't believe um that we've seen a lineup yet. Um so and and and I want to hear the story of how Rick Sweet told Luis Lara he's going. We had Rick Sweet on um last Wednesday, and his stories of telling players they're going to the big leagues, including Stallings, who he just did uh a couple of weeks ago. Um Luis Lara was in the midst of a game of FIFA on PlayStation when he got the call. So that's pretty cool. But we haven't seen a lineup yet. So I don't know if he's in the starting lineup today in game one of the doubleheader, or if he will be the my guess is he's gonna be the starting right fielder in one of the games today, either the first or the second. Yeah, I mean, that's one of the things about watching the World Cup, and we've had it on a lot, and we will not have soccer on again until the Women's World Cup or the Olympics.

Yeah, probably. It's it's a really it's fun to watch, and it probably is the most athletic people on the planet, like running the Olympics. Oh my god, yeah, and then yeah, right. So anyway, I try to have the scoop a lot on you, and um, like we'll be sitting, never works, we'll be sitting, you know, whatever, watching a brewer game or whatever's on, and I'll be like, Oh my gosh, Mike, did you see? And you're like, Yeah, like last night. I was like, okay. But I never, I don't think I've ever had the scoop on you.

You know, one of one of the I I wish you would have been on the field because one of the things that you uh that I appreciate about you when it comes to sports is you humanize it. Yeah, like you bring the the the real yeah. So when I was there three weeks ago, I think it was three weeks ago today, it might have been two. Math gets lost here, calendar math. Yeah. When Cooper Pratt made his debut, yeah, he got called up from Nashville. Monday was an off day. So all of his family lives in Mississippi and and around the country, they all came up. And I'm on the field, you know, Pat Murphy's office at 3:30, and then back on the field. And that whole time on the field afterwards, the whole area between the first base dugout, the brewers dugout, and behind home plate, there have to be 60 people there. And they're all his family and friends.

Um, and the human element is so much a part of it. We end up looking uh guilty. We end up, I end up looking at the box score, talking about a player's failure or success at the plate or play that he or she didn't make, or whatever that is. And you do a great job reminding me that um even when a Brewer's player does something really good, like you'll bring it up, that poor pitcher for the other team.

For the other team, I just kind of feel bad for him. He's like so defeated, and yeah, and I'm just like, oh, can you just throw a strike? It's it's kind of like back in the t-ball, or maybe not even t-ball, but youth baseball, right? And it's like, can you guys just score a run? So it's not 40 to zero, you know, you're cheering on the other team, yeah. Or, you know, that that's so much fun. And then I remember watching that, and I'm just like, Cooper, just get a hit. Um, we uh reluctantly, I didn't love it then, always watched ESPN.

Yeah, he like we all I should have been great at the final four picks because that's all we did is watch the ESPN.

And the only reason they do it is because at some point the officials have rewarded them for that action.
