Mondays.
SPEAKER_01Podcasting Monday from an undisclosed bunker in the Badger State. This is I Love Mondays with Mike Heller, powered by determination and a little bit of duct tape. Here's your host, Mike Heller.
SPEAKER_05Interestingly enough, uh, no duct tape. And every now and then I look because something happens and I go, well, let's just grab the duct tape, and then um I realize that uh I'm out of duct tape. Uh and let me uh let me back up because to be fair, I don't fix anything. I mean, almost all I mean, literally, this is all this is a literal deal. I fix almost nothing. I break stuff, but I am not a fixer around the house. I have zero handy. I blame my dad, uh, Bob, who's 90 and he doesn't he doesn't listen to podcasts, so I don't know if he's ever heard this. So I uh there's no fear of him listening right now. Uh I blame him. He fixed some stuff. Um he fixed stuff because we we certainly weren't gonna spend money to have somebody else come fix it. He fixed stuff and he was good at it. Pretty pretty good at it. Not great, but good. Good enough. Uh I'm not good enough. That's like a SNL uh deal. Uh I'm when it comes to fixing something, nah. I I I am simply I've never been good at it. Um so it that part for me, that that is what it is. I don't fix anything. So duct tape, I know it's in the open. That's why I brought it up. Um, welcome in. I I have uh I have some opinions I want to share uh daily, but certainly from last night, Mike in Merrill, good morning, all. And it is uh it is a hot summer Wisconsin day again. Every time somebody, and I get it, this restricts a little bit of what you can do fully outside, but every time I I think of somebody complaining about uh this kind of a day, I think to a December, January, February day where the high temperature is four below zero. And I don't complain. I don't, so I don't complain about days like today. Now I'm not I'm not a roofer, I'm not working on a road crew, um, you know, I'm I'm not in construction. So all of those things work to my benefit when I don't complain about a day like today. I'm I'm in a uh an office studio air conditioned doing a show. Uh Jim said, hey, uh good morning, Jim. He says, good morning, Mike. Uh we welcome you all in. I didn't have to work last night at Red and White Wine and Bourbon Bar. So yesterday's the first day in a week I didn't uh have a beverage. I mean, I have water and coffee, but I'm I didn't uh I didn't partake. There was no bourbon, there was no wine, there was no beer yesterday. That was a that makes it a pretty good day considering what the last six were. So um, so I stayed home, worked on a Badger Connect podcast um prep. I have Sean Eichhorst, the Wisconsin athletic director, that will record an interview um shortly after we wrap here today. I'll head down to Camp Randall, and that will play on Thursday for those who are fans of Badger Connect. So I did some prep on that and uh walked across the street, hit some chip shots because it's uh in my game, nobody likes to hear about other people's golf game. I understand, but mine uh that's an issue. So went over there and it was a little warm. But then I came back and I'm watching Netflix and the home run derby. Two things I couldn't do. Because I had on on, I had the MLB network on prior to that starting with Netflix. And I I can't, they're such poor interviews at times. Some of the uh some of the hosts are really good at it, but then when you put Arod trying to ask people questions and Big Poppy trying to ask people questions, um just not as good. I mean, I I know what they tried to do, they tried to repli replicate what uh Barkley, Shaq, and Kenny have going on uh in with the NBA, but they don't do it. They've tried, but it's it's not good enough. But then I was watching Netflix, and I know a lot of people are bitching about Netflix and their coverage. Uh we all understand the business model for Netflix. They're trying to promote Netflix. That's why they did the all-star game. Promote all of their shows. That's why Will Farrell was on to promote his uh golf deal, you know, that movie, I think it's a movie that comes out on Thursday on Netflix. It that's what they were doing. The home run derby, in and of itself, was fantastic. However, with a caveat, I can't watch three hours of home runs, and it really was it was a three-hour deal. And I watched the open. Uh Wilson Contreras was fantastic in the open. Bryce Harper's out in the first round. Um I watched that and a little bit of the second round, and then I checked out, and I came back to it when it was finishing. Because I can't watch three hours of uninterrupted batting practice home runs. I just it I lose my interest, and then I don't think, although, although I thought Vas Gersion was great. I don't think they do a good enough job of lending other insights. But what are you gonna do? It's three hours. Um, I thought the format switch was great. I I think it's all good. The other uh opinion set before uh we jump into a super fan Tuesday. You know, the uh the quarterback rating uh deal that has come out, and and this this is this is perfect programming, right? This is what ESPN needs. Jeremy Fowler puts together a list, and it's based on surveying league execs, coaches, and scouts to rank the top 10 players at 11 different positions, and all we really care about is the quarterback deal. So here's what they came up with. And I and I don't quibble about a whole lot in the way of lists, but Josh Allen is one, Mahomes is two. If you were picking your quarterback today to be your team's quarterback for an NFL team this year, would Mahomes really be your second choice? Because he wouldn't be mine. Based on what he's done in his career, no doubt. But is this predictive or based on last year's results or a compilation of last year, the year before, or whatever, going into this year, who you think the top 10 are? Allen is one. I don't think Mahomes is two. Matthew Stafford is three, but that's an interesting three because he is on the edge of how long can this guy do it? Because he has taken a beating at the position, but he's still great. So I understand it. Joe Burrow is four. Why is Joe Burrow four? Joe Burrow is four because of what he did before he got hurt four years ago. Is Joe Burrow the fourth best quarterback in the NFL? These are kind of questions without answers. Lamar Jackson is five. He is such an interesting guy to me because he's a better version of Michael Vick. But to me, Lamar Jackson is not the quarterback. I've never been in the interest of full disclosure and and fairness, not a big Lamar Jackson fan. So I think his his athletic game is extraordinary. His throw game is to me average-ish. Dak is six, another one that I I suppose in the grand scheme of things, I don't get. Justin Herbert is seven, I understand it. Drake May is eight based on a year. Come on, man. He's eight based on one go-around. Jared Goff, nine. I actually understand. He doesn't get any credit, any love. By the way, the defending Super Bowl champion quarterback is the first of the honorable mentions. It means he's 11. Caleb Williams is 10. Caleb Williams is 10 because of the extraordinary, not because of how good a quarterback he is. Caleb Williams is 10 because he was extraordinary in moments. Jordan Love belongs as a top 10, but he's not leading Sports Center. He's not leading the NFL highlight package. Because mostly, mostly, he's not a highlight maker. Caleb Williams is. He's gonna do the extraordinary. Caleb Williams does not belong ahead of Jordan Love on the rating. Now, at the end of this year, I might have a different thought on that. But right now, he doesn't. He's there, and I get it, because I understand how they put these things together. He's there because of the extraordinary and the potential. So all of this is out there. Uh let me let me run through a couple of quick uh sponsor notes um while we get ready to go. I want to thank uh those who are part of us with one community bank. Um, so like when Sean Icor succeeded Tom Osborne at Nebraska, um, the guys I'm bringing in on our super fan Tuesday, and look at that, there's three, we're three wide on this deal. Uh, and we didn't uh test in advance. So I don't, yeah. What is what is it? Hi. Hi, Tread. Uh okay, so I hear Treadmill. That's good. What about CC? Can we hear him? God, let's hope not. Oh gosh, we're for sheet. Here we go. Here we here we go.
SPEAKER_00CC's working. CC was on a work call, which is full air quotes all the time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I wasn't I never said I was on a work call, I said I was on a call changing some hotel rooms around for a golf trip.
SPEAKER_05For a golf trip, yeah, yeah, for a golf trip uh that is that he's going on. All right, so the problem with you guys doing this week is you're following last week's super fan, which was Kari. Which is, I mean, that that is not an easy go for you guys.
SPEAKER_04Um it got uglier, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah. Well, you didn't even have to say that. That was a given. Um, I mean I just think visually it's worse. Yes, that's all I'm saying. Um boys, uh what do we okay? So the Brewers limped into the all-star break. It's not the first time they've done that, uh, especially not the first time they've done it with their last games before the break being in Pittsburgh. Um, but if you grand big picture it, they lead the division by five. They have the second best record in all of baseball. They did a lot of it without Brandon Woodruff, who is slated to be their number two pitcher. They did it with Kyle Harrison, who was not slated to be their number two starting pitcher and uh morphed into that role. They did a fair amount of it, especially early, without Jackson Churio for a month, Andrew Bond for a month, Kristen Yelich gone for a month. Uh with all of these things said and done, they have the second best record in baseball. Why does it feel like the fan base is underwhelmed at the break? Am I wrong on that? Courtney, let me start with you.
SPEAKER_04So, you know, it's funny you say that. I was with my father-in-law Sunday night, uh, and he said, Well, I guess the Brewers decided the season was over. And I thought to myself, well, it's it's three base, right? It's three baseball games um in 24 hours. Yeah, right. I mean, like uh a lot, I think we all know like fans are notoriously bad when it comes to recency bias, right? And let's just be honest, like it wasn't that exciting. I'll also say, like, they were on such a heater for a while, you know. I I have to remind myself, because I as you guys know, I am not like I don't live baseball, and because there's so many games, I have to remind myself, I'll be like, well, it doesn't feel like the Bureau's are really playing that well. And then you'll go in and you look in the standings on ESPN, and it'll be like uh they're six and four or seven and three in their last ten. Okay, and the reality is people who know baseball know this. If you're six or four or seven and three, if you're always somewhere around six and four or seven and three in your last ten, you're gonna have a pretty damn good baseball season.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But when you went through the stretch they had where they were like kind of just flaming hot, right? It kind of just feels like they're treading water right now. So I look, I think, I think we're all victim to because how long the season is that the fans like the expectations got really high, and now that it's just kind of been, let's just say, B minus instead of A plus, right? It just takes some of the wind out of people's sails.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I think as we get down the stretch and the games all start to matter even more, I think that fan sentiment will will turn. That's just my opinion. I know for me, it will. You're also kind of, you know, they talk about baseball players being in the dog days of summer. I think as a fan, you're a little bit with baseball in the dog days of summer. 100%, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Really good, Courtney, because I I I agree. I I think we get a little worn out. And then you get a big series, and then you went to Pittsburgh. You know, yeah, the St. Louis series, then you you went to Pittsburgh. Now you're gonna get Miami coming out, and yeah, there's injuries. Now, Tread, let me get to you, but let me also share this. Brewers' stats at the at the all-star break, runs, they're fourth. Only the only good team ahead of them is the Dodgers. Washington and Pittsburgh, which I don't consider either one of them to be good teams, they've scored more runs, but they're uh one-dimensional. So the Brewers are fourth in baseball in runs. They're second in Major League Baseball in walks, they're fourth in stolen bases, they're first in runs scored with runners in scoring position, sixth in major league baseball with batting average with runners in scoring position. In pitching ranks, ERA, they're second in baseball with 3.48. On base percentage, they're second only to the Dodgers. In strikeouts, they're second only to the Phillies. In walks given up, they're fifth best in the National League. So top third. In home runs, they're second from uh the the least amount of home run home runs given up. So you put all those things together and everything measures. This is a really good team, and they are really good at the all-star break.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. I mean, I'm gonna lead with we all wanted 60 wins before the all-star break because it's only happened 21 times. Dodgers did it this year in the history of baseball. So as my mother, who happens to be upstairs right now, said after the second loss to the pirates, the the two losses in the in the double play uh doubleheader.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_05That's what they call it. The doubleheader. There were double players in the doubleheader, but yes, doubleheader.
SPEAKER_00She she said it best, I hate to fucking lose. Like we just wanted to seal that deal. In love her, you wonder where it is.
SPEAKER_05She's great. You wonder where you're wonder where that comes from, then for you.
SPEAKER_00You wonder where it comes from. Because dad's a saint. I think people are a little shook right now for a couple reasons. One, injury's not at the pitching position.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Don't know if Koenig's right, certainly know Woody's not right. Harrison's not injured, but you're seeing some interesting cracks in what was a perfect mirror, and yeah, that's probably mean reversion. Ms. was asked to take a rest. So, like, that's a lot for a fan that's paying attention. That's a lot to process on the pitching side.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I think we we we'll drill into that later. If if you don't bring it up, I want to, because we need to talk about whether or not we have to address that position. The second reason fans are a little bit worried is you're the the top of the lineup. Contreras had a really tough go in St. Louis. Yeli's still not right, Bryce is still figuring it out. That's that's also a lot. I mean, the bottom of the lineup is starting to produce here and there, but they weren't early, they weren't in June necessarily the way the way they were last year much of the season at that 6, 7, 8, 9. So the that I think that people, you know, anecdotally, as they're watching games and hearing news post-game, there's a reason to question that. There is not a reason to say I'm gonna leave Mel's dad alone. Uh the Brews have given up. Not not at all. And they're freaking exhausted. I mean, that was a lot to ask of any professional sports team over the last 24-25 days. So I I'm I mean, we're nowhere near L R E L A X. We're nowhere near that. That said, you know, some guys up top got to figure out how to hit again, and we definitely need to talk about whether or not we've got the horses on the mound to complete this deal.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, let me just add one thing, like on uh Tarang. And I know that wasn't specifically where you're going on that, but Tarang is ninth in baseball, in baseball reference in war. Number one is is uh PCA. And and Tarang is ninth um among position players. This excludes pitchers. Uh so he he's certainly worthy of being an all-star. He's been fantastic, but he's you know, you know, I think we're spoiled. We we expect we expect him to be great all the time, and I don't know that he has been. I I would I would say this because I want to transition. I think there's um uh greater heat out there in some other things, but I want to get to the the pitching acquisition here in a minute. I I would if if you had me pick the division winner today coming out of the all-star break, I'm gonna pick Milwaukee. It's gonna be a two-team race, it's gonna be them and Chicago. Uh, but part of that is predicated on, and the Cubs know this, their pitching has been been unhealthy all season long, starting pitching. The Brewers have been mostly healthy. Woodruff missed and then he came back, and now I think he's done. Um, I do think that one of these two teams is gonna go get one of the two more significant names in the pitching market. And if I had to handicap who's gonna go get Scoobyl, it's gonna be Chicago. Yeah, I think they have more at stake. I think Jim Hendry has more on the line. The Brewers are well positioned for a long, again, looking over the three to five year rolling horizon, the Brewers are better positioned than the Cubs. Cubs have spent a lot of money on some aging players, including Bregman, and they don't have pitching unless pitching comes back next year healthy, because they don't have it right now. Uh, I I would think that the Cubs would be more likely to go. So I'll pick the Brew to win the division today. But I do have uh if I'm driving north, I'm looking in the rear view mirror and seeing that the Cubs are you know there and they're closer than they appeared five days ago.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I gotta tell, you know, it's funny. I was just doing a little math while you were talking because I can almost talk so much. Yeah, I I needed it, I needed it.
SPEAKER_05I did use a calculator that will get him out of here at 10 45. He was worried about being gone at 10 45. That one will come back.
SPEAKER_04Thank you. You know, it is funny with with baseball how the numbers play out because you're sitting looking at the brewers, they are essentially on pace to win 100 games, and they're on pace. To win 99. Uh Cubs have 66 games left. So for them to win 100, they gotta go 46 and 20. It's hard to go. It's funny because of how big the numbers are in baseball. Like you look at it and you're like, oh well, we've only got five more wins. It's a five-game lead. But then when you start really like extrapolating what that means, right? They gotta go 46 and 20 if we just kind of stay on the same pace, right? Now don't get me wrong, the brewers are 615, you know, winning percentage. So to stay on that clip isn't easy either. But I just like they really have to come on and play good baseball. So I would tend to agree with you. And Mike, I will tell you this, I I agree with you. I I well it's we all I think thought when Woodruff was back again and dealing, we're like, oh well, they're not in the they're not in the market for a starting pitcher, right? Like if he's gonna pitch like this, we're not giving up assets, like we're not doing that. Um my belief right now is even with Woodruff, I mean, it's just hard the way Koenig's pitched, and fair and frankly, um some of the some of the other folks out of the pen, like if I was gonna give up assets, I'm actually a lot more concerned about the depth getting us from you know uh from the start of the game until we get you know to the Uri Ray, uh that that part of the back end of the of the staff. So if it were me, I'd try candidly, like I'd probably roll the dice when I got starting pitching. I'd probably be much more interested in giving something up to shore up the middle relief because I just feel like that's supposed to be the strength of this team. And I feel like lately, you know, innings five, six, seven um are where I am more nervous than I am anywhere else. I don't know if you guys feel the same way, but I just feel like you know that just hasn't gone exactly how we thought it would. Um, and yeah, let's just be honest, I think the way the brewers are built, if we want to continue to be a relevant baseball club, now we can all debate whether they'll even be a season next year, but you just you can it's great the way there's really deep performances, but you can only just give up so much. I mean, you can only swing so hard for the fences because right, you need that depth because of how the organization works, right?
SPEAKER_05So they have to meet that's always been the story.
SPEAKER_04We don't have that luxury. So, to your point, like we're we're not gonna be able to outbid teams regardless of how good the farm system is.
SPEAKER_05And they bitch about it in Chicago because they think they don't spend enough money uh to go get the right guys or to keep the right guys, and in Milwaukee, uh you know, the fan base will bitch about the brewers saying that they don't spend money, period. And yet what they've found is that this um modus operandi for the brewers has worked. Their their MO works, it is a working model that has been highly successful. Somebody's gonna say, uh, and now somebody's gonna say uh they haven't won a World Series, Mike, they haven't been to one in 44 years. I get it. But the current model, not for 44 years of models, but the current model works. And people hate it, but you gotta continue to bite the fucking apple. And the only way you get to bite the apple is the way they're going about it. Yeah. Other small market teams, they try to ebb and flow it and go on the, you know, ride the wave. Yeah, but these are calm seas in Major League Baseball. There aren't waves. You you got to get a storm to make a wave, and that storm is you got to get lucky as hell on some acquisitions, a throw-in player that becomes amazing. So I love the Brewers and the way they position themselves to be successful. To try to let you jump in here, Courtney, to the point of uh uh of not giving away the assets. Uh I think you can strike uh now uh with the with certain guys that they have in the system. Um why am I missing uh the kid at Biloxi that played for Canada in USA? Is it Fisher?
SPEAKER_00Um Andrew Fisher played for Italy.
SPEAKER_05Uh Italy, I'm sorry. Uh and Fisher is killing it, right? I mean, he's having an enormous, an amazing year. I've talked to Vinny about him. There are still holes in that dude's swing, and you could regret this, but he can be part of that deal. Um, you might regret this, but with Luis Lara here, you could move Garrett Mitchell. Garrett Mitchell's value right now is as great as it's ever been because he's been healthy for the first 100 games, and you can see what he does when he's healthy. He would be an everyday guy, and then you you have another guy in your minor league system. I don't know who that might be, that is in the ML MILB top 100. Yep. Uh, you could go Fisher, the other guy, and Garrett Mitchell, and probably be in play for Scoobyl. You have to understand you're getting Scoobyl for August, September, and October, whatever that is, because he's not coming back. But the problem there also is that Detroit and Minnesota, they don't want to move their guys, Ryan and Scoobyl, because even though they sort of suck, they're in the race because of the extended wildcard. Go ahead, Tread.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're in the race. I mean, they're four out in Detroit and they're coming hard. So I think that is a a worthy concern that they won't move. Middle middle relief is very fair, Court. Yeah. If for no other reason other than Ashby is gonna become, I mean, he did over the weekend, that that that workload's gonna become an issue at some point. It's just that's the way the world works. So I'd I'd love to give him help. The flip side of that is you got a couple of rotational guys that probably can become mid-relief guys. So maybe maybe it's better to get a one, two, three and move a Gasser or Henderson into into mid-relief on, you know, on that front. In terms of the strike now coming, I mean, how how fortunate are we that in the last 20, well, over 25 years in terms of football, but as a fan base, our biggest complaint hasn't been we can't we can't win enough games to get into the postseason in basketball and football and baseball. As a fan base, our biggest bitch has been we're one player away. We're one player away. And generally speaking, I think fans don't they they they know a fraction of what a front office and a head coach knows. But generally speaking, that that's been true. I mean, it's it's been the Reggie White, Charles Woodson one away. We haven't figured it out in baseball yet. You know, last year going into that postseason, best team in baseball, record-wise. Maybe all of us were holding our breath around whether or not, because August, if we all recall, was not a great production month offensively. So maybe we thought, oh shit, that could come back. We're gonna be facing nothing but quality pitching. We're not gonna get into guys' weak bullpins. So that changes the dynamic drastically from a regular season game. But it was unlucky what happened, right? I mean, and I say that because that's not probability doesn't work that way. It doesn't have 162 games of a lot of good and then turn to shit just because the pitching's, you know, it's slightly better. It doesn't. We were supposed to win more games. Maybe we weren't because the Dodgers are the Dodgers, but it we we cannot, we cannot complain as a state with these professional teams always being a guy or two. I I would love to see a strike. I would, I am now leaning more, much more into an ace or even a uh a number two on the mound versus a hard-hitting third baseman. I mean, that come on, we're not that's not happening. We are going to have to depend on one through nine to hit the fucking ball in the postseason, regardless of whether or not we get a hard-hitting third baseman like Suarez last year, which we're not rehashing that, and that did not work out for Seattle. So I'd much rather have a shutdown pitcher potentially mid-relief. In the pipeline, we don't, I mean, you didn't even mention, you mentioned a tonet. I mean, we don't have to give away the farm to get a guy because we have guys right now on the active roster and guys down in high A, double, now mostly AA and triple, that we can put together a beautiful package without mortgaging the future.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I got I gotta I gotta say so two two two things. One, for the Cubs fans out there who say they don't spend enough money, Heller. I want to get back to this real quick. Yeah, there's three brewers that make more than Craig Council. Yeah, exactly. Okay, so there you go. Yeah, two, I would say this, and this will bring up a debate. This will be a take that probably both of you and most people listening hate. So that that's good because Heller told me years ago, you know, if y'all get on uh a talk radio show together and everybody agrees it's not very good radio. Um it's true. I am in the camp that so I don't want anybody to think I don't want to win championships. I would rather continue to I'm not the guy who would trade a championship this year to be bad for the next 10.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we we live in the same uh in the same home there.
SPEAKER_04Where's the hot take? We all agree. Then I'm sorry, so you both agree because I'm just not so I struggle with this, like yeah, oh I'm gonna trade away a bunch of talent to get school for you know six weeks or some shit. Okay, and you don't want to do that.
SPEAKER_05But okay, but let me let me do this. Let me uh because we do agree, yeah, we do agree on that, but I I I think depending on what you find out next about where you sit from a starting pitching rotation. And and are we all kind of in agreement, even though nothing's official yet, that the Brandon Woodruff is done.
SPEAKER_04He's done. All right, so if he's done Kyle Harrison if he's not done, he he can't go every he can't go every five days for the next. We're not getting that out of them.
SPEAKER_05All right, so Kyle Harrison is now uh there's a certainly a yellow or orange-ish flag on him, right? A little caution. They just brought out the caution um on Harrison. Be careful. And I don't think it's a caution on Miz, but I brought this up yesterday on the show. A year ago, he went 129 and a third innings. 66 of them were with the Brewers, but he went 129 and a third. He's gone 111 in the first 100-ish games. I mean, they play play played 96 times. He's pitched and thrown 111 innings, 18 short of what he finished last year with. So he got stronger. However, there is also some caution tape around him. I do think you need to go get a starting pitcher. It might not be Scoobyl, but we also, as fans of a team, you have to prepare that the Cubs are gonna go get him. And and just wait until the reaction the day after on I Love Mondays, the day after the Cubs acquire Scoobyl and the Brewers acquire a guy you haven't heard of from wherever, right? Because that that shit is gonna fly after it happens, especially depending on where you are then in the standings. So I just wanted to bring that up. And and I do I love this, but I want to be aware uh court's got a bug out in about 11 minutes. So and he's getting called right now. I mean, usually we we uh we put do not disturb on our phones before we start something, but I mean, who am I to judge? Well, it's not my show.
SPEAKER_04You know, it's not my show. I don't know all the rules. Um, you know, the thing I'd say about so like I don't disagree with you, you know, it's interesting with the Miz thing, because you would think if they were concerned about the workload, they wouldn't have let him pitch so late into some of these. You know, I've been surprised how many games they've run him back out there for the seventh and eighth innings. Yeah, I don't know exactly the number, but it's been you know, that that's not tell me, let's just be honest, you don't see that in baseball that much. So that in some in one way it tells me, well, they're clearly not that concerned about the total workload, or you wouldn't be running a guy back out there, you know what I mean, seventh, eighth, seventh, eighth inning. So there there's that part of it. I would say this, you know, we talk about, hey, there's a you there's a flag on uh Harrison and you know, maybe we don't think Wood's roughly thinkless, but you know, the other side to my point of the middle relief is is frankly that's like do we does anybody think maybe just maybe that Jared Koenig is the carry Koenig's lost it? Do we think that uh uh who's our bulldog? Uh Patrick or we think Patrick's gonna get it back? I mean, like, yeah, yeah, you know, I mean it isn't it isn't like the middle part of the relievers is exactly just you know going gangbusters. And I'll say, like, from the little bit I know about how you know Murph likes to manage how in general we manage baseball these days, you have to ask yourself like, would I get further with a frontline starter, or would I get further with adding more middle relief? Because you and I both know like we're gonna have games in the playoffs and down the stretch where I don't care who your starters are, they're not pitching past fourth or fifth inning. Right. And you're gonna need that depth in the middle. So I just like I would agree with you if I felt like the bullpen was where we all thought it was two months ago.
SPEAKER_05Right, and certainly the back half seven eight nine. Um, even though Ashby has uh gotten beat up a little bit of late, uh we all uh would agree, I think most fans would agree, you you like 789. You like their workload to be down a little bit, but you like 789. That's a question of Patrick, Yoho, Koenig, uh some of the other things that you're getting there, and and almost certainly gonna add pieces to that. I would also think that at some point down the road, Sprout or Drowen would be one of those middle relief guys.
SPEAKER_04Well, is Priester is Priester coming back?
SPEAKER_05I don't think so.
SPEAKER_04Right. And and Gasser just looks like it's actually getting worse, or am I the only thing?
SPEAKER_05Well, I did he just I mean he had a terrible start uh on on Sunday. Yeah. But otherwise, his his game log, his recent starts prior to that, um, one bad and two really good. So um let me let me do this before you you got a bug here. I wanted to touch on this quarterback thing. You know, I just kind of bitched about about where we are in NFL quarterback ranking with Alan Mahomes, Stafford Burrow, and Lamar Jackson, the top five. A couple of them in there that I I wouldn't specifically say, oh boy, I'm I'm going right there. And Lamar Jackson's one of them, but I've never been a Jackson, uh Lamar Jackson fan. I respect his athleticism, his talent at the position. But the idea that Caleb Williams is 10 on this kind of pisses me off because I don't think he's a 10. I I think he could be. Like this is not a prediction of future. This is what you've done. Caleb Williams was a below, well, he is a middle of the road three-quarters of an NFL game quarterback, and then an extraordinary fourth quarter and overtime quarterback, especially late in the season last year. He is the greatest highlight maker in the game today, along with Mahomes, who his highlights are more behind him than in front of him. So maybe it's because he's in Chicago. But if if you had me take a quarterback for this year, I'm taking Jordan Love over Caleb Williams. And I could be wrong when it's all said and done. But if I wanted to guarantee it, like if I felt, hey, I this is my money I'm spending this year, I want to spend it on Jordan Love. Over the next three to five years, I'm I'm probably in Caleb's camp, but there's a risk there. That's the uh buying of a stock. Courtney, I know you got to go in a few in a couple of minutes, so let me have you go first.
SPEAKER_04So I try really hard when I talk about Caleb Williams and Jordan Love to not be a homer. I'm I'm I'm pretty bad at it, but I I I try hard and I should also be self-aware. Right. Thank you. And I should also point out that I wasn't a Caleb Williams fan coming out of college. Um frankly, because um look look, I just think that if players are as exceptional as supposedly Caleb Williams was coming out of college, that they elevate their their teams. And while Caleb Williams was was good, I didn't I just never felt like he took a team and did that with it. Okay. Um, and so I I I I just want to be clear for that. I was skeptical from the word go. I would say this. If you are, and I think Mike, whoa, we just look at that Trent just went black.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um I think if you are projecting quarterbacks, and I think Mike, you've talked a little bit about this, I think what if you're doing is projecting potential still future upside. I understand a world where people are ranking Caleb Williams ahead of Jordan Locke. I I I can get my head around that. Um if what you're saying is, hey, based on the body of work thus far in their career, which I feel like is what you have to be saying, because like when I look at most of the quarterback rankings, well, you're not projecting future if you have Matthew Stafford and Dak Prescott, and uh, I'm looking at somebody's list, Jared Goff in your top 10, because let's be honest, those guys aren't on an uphill on an upward trajectory, they're all on the downward trajectory of their careers, right? So if you have those guys in the top 10, you're saying, hey, this is based on the body of work. And based on the body of work, if I was ranking quarterbacks, there's no world in which Caleb Williams is ahead of Jordan Love. And I said this to somebody the other day when you look at the year the uh Bears had last year. At any point in time, would you rank Don Mikowski as a top 10 quarterback in the NFL?
SPEAKER_03No, no.
SPEAKER_04Okay, does everybody remember the Magic Man season?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Now I'm not saying that Caleb Williams is Don Mikowski. I'm not that's not but but I think you understand the parallel. We had a we had a Mikowski went through a season and a half-ish, right? Where it seemed like every time you needed a play at the end of a game, that guy made a play at the end of a game to get you in. That's how we got the nickname the Magic Man, right? Right. Nobody would have called him a top 10 quarterback based on that body of work. So I just think I think there's Caleb Williams is getting some sort of combination of projection around plays he made at the end of games, and kudos to him and kudos to them. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Let me let me read let me read what they wrote about this in this ESPN.com uh ranking. He said uh that it was really close between Love, Daniels, and Darnold for the number 10 spot. And uh Caleb won essentially uh with some tiebreakers. Quote, he's the most dynamic of the group, one GM said. He's got armed talent and overall athleticism suited for today's game. He's a closer, another NFL personnel evaluator said. End of games, he has shown that. However, his inconsistencies did give voters pause. His 20.2% off-target rate was 37 of 38 quarterbacks in 2025, though his ability to keep plays alive and throw the ball away contribute to this. Quote, wildly erratic, uh veteran NFL defensive coach said. Doesn't always take the layups and still needs to mature into the position, has some of those what is he doing plays, but he also makes plays only he and Mahomes can make. He can throw from any angle, deceptively fast when forced to scramble. He's got the it factor in crunch time. And I think that's the that's the number one court is that it factor. What he did late in games, and I had somebody asked this earlier today, uh, talking about this. If the Bears and Caleb Williams don't rally the way Caleb Williams rallied in the game against the Packers, and the Packers just close it out. This isn't even close. Jordan Love is probably number eight in the league, and Caleb Williams is knocking on the door for 10th. But it is that finish, those finishes are memorable.
SPEAKER_04They they are now. One of the things you said was arm talent and and and dynamic. Yeah, was one of the things that was in that quote. I I'm gonna just give you a couple of quarterbacks here, arm talent and dynamic, and anybody tell me if they know what these quarterbacks have in common. You ready?
SPEAKER_05Sure.
SPEAKER_04Justin Fields, Mitch Trubisky, Jay Cutler. Do they all have more arm talent and are more dynamic than Jordan Love?
SPEAKER_05Uh amazing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they are. I'm just saying.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, no, I mean, look, just if you if you held a combine right now and you put Jordan Love on the field coming out of college to the draft, Jordan Love on the field with Caleb Williams, Justin Fields, Mitch Trubisky, and Jay Cutler, all of them are. 22 years old heading to the draft.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Who who's the least dynamic and has the least arm talent? Jordan Love. I I give a crap about how dynamic and what the arm talent is. I'm just saying like that. Am I wrong?
SPEAKER_05No, you're not you're not wrong. But there are the what Caleb Williams did in fourth quarter's back half of last year, what he did in in crunch time, can't and shouldn't be ignored. I also, on the other hand, I also say you can't and shouldn't ignore the first three quarters of all of those games that put the Bears in those positions. And it wasn't like he was Jay Cutler and throwing a ton of interceptions. I mean, he his interceptions. Well, well, yes.
SPEAKER_04But but I'm just I just think to our point, like we all in sports get caught up. Look, I heard a guy say years ago about Jeff George. Like, how does Jeff George keep getting NFL jobs into like almost being 40 years old? Right. I mean, yeah, and a guy said, Man, I'll tell you what, when you're in a GM and that guy's out on a practice field and he's just in shorts and a t-shirt and a helmet and he's just letting it rip, you've never seen anything like it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I'm sure that's probably true. You probably never have seen anything like it. That's not how we played football. So I would just say, like, and I'm also just seeing on the camp, I think one of the biggest mistakes the Bears made actually was moving off of Justin Fields and drafting another quarterback. I because I never believed Justin Fields was the problem in Chicago. I just had coaching problems.
SPEAKER_05We we talked about Caleb and they resolved their coaching problem. Correct. And Caleb's the quarterback.
SPEAKER_04Right. And I just didn't think I didn't think Fields had a good surrounding cast. I don't think the the I don't think the front office or the coaching staff knew what it was doing. And so I it I'll also tell you, like, I'm not a clearly not a Bears fan, but part of my thing with the whole Caleb Williams thing is like I really never believed that that's where the problems with the organization lay. And so I just then don't really believe he's the solution. I'll I'll probably be wrong. Uh, you know, I I have some friends who love it when I say this. I said years ago, you know, uh, every time I uh look at uh Marcus Canby, I see Tim Duncan's future. I was I was wrong on that. I'll probably be wrong on this. Um, but um, but I will tell you this, he'd have to do a lot. I I do not understand the top 10 thing. Um I could tell you at the end of this year, I could see it. If if it goes like it did to your point, if he cleans it up and they win the games they won last year, plus he really cleans up that side of his game, then yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, and and this is and I go back to this a lot only because I love it. And and Court, whenever you gotta leave, just uh walk out of the screen and I'll take you off. Um but I I want to get Tread in on this too. I I love this comparison. If if I'm buying a three to five year stock on quarterbacks right now and I'm a little bit aggressive, I'll take Caleb over Jordan Love.
unknownSure.
SPEAKER_05Because that stock has a chance to go from a $10 stock to a $150 stock. If I buy Jordan Love at $10 right now in three to five years, I think it's got a chance to go to a $40 stock, but I don't think he's got a chance to go to a $150. And I think Caleb Williams does. So I think that is one of the big arguments is people can't help their own uh human nature elements that says, Kevin, this dude, if he could play like that at the end of games, if he could play like that the whole game, he'll be as good as anybody in the entire 32 um holster of quarterbacks in the league.
SPEAKER_04So so I do have to go, but I will say this.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Does anybody think we've seen the best of Jordan Love? Yeah. No. No. I don't either.
SPEAKER_00Hey, hey, hey, Golden, Watson, Reed. Yeah, show the fuck up. It's time. Like, I wish I had Jared Goff's receivers. I wish I had St. Brown who catches balls that are 20 yards away from his hands, or Williams, or Junior Gibbs behind me running the ball. I mean, are you kidding me? No. We haven't we haven't scratched the surface of Jordan Love. We've also had injuries at the offensive line. I know all teams have. Look at some of the balls of the 40.3% of balls he throws incomplete down in Chicago. Look how incomplete they are. He's a fucking clown at times. Like it's not even within 15 yards. And then he's he's barked in and as for his USC days, how many of his teammates were drafted versus how many of the guys that you know Jordan Love played at Utah State were drafted? How many, how many of his teammates were drafted? What was USC's ranking in terms of four and five stars?
SPEAKER_05Aaron quick quick quick question before uh Courtney leaves. If if I give you the three to if I give you the five-year stock question and you got ten dollars, and they're all ten dollars, they're both ten dollars, Caleb or Jordan, where are you putting your ten dollars in on buying that quarterback stock for the next five years?
SPEAKER_04Yep. Oh, I'm going Jordan Love because I'll tell you this like well, and here's why. Because I understand what you're saying about the upside. Okay, so this is the old yeah, if I got 10 bucks, am I buying anthropic or am I buying Coca-Cola? I mean, that's what we're talking about. Well, I understand you would, but I have different feelings on that. But I'm saying we're talking about shooting for the moon, or here's what I tell you five years from now, you put that ten dollars on the Jordan Love stock, it's probably worst case worth ten dollars. It probably isn't worth 50, and maybe the Caleb Williams is 50. Yeah, also a chance five years from now, it's a penny stock.
SPEAKER_05I'm not trying to I'm not trying to influence you. I'm only trying to to state my case on it. I I would invest that same amount of money over the next five-year window into Caleb Williams because as much as Caleb, I'm buying Ben Johnson, who I think is uh it appears to be that he is a hell of a head coach and a certainly an offensive genius, as he showed in Detroit and showed last year in Chicago.
SPEAKER_04I I think that's true, probably. And I and I do unfortunately need to go because God, I love talking football. But I I will say that when I said you think you've seen the best of Jordan Love, Jeff, I will add this. Like, I do agree with what you're saying about offensive line and the surrounding cast and all of those things. I will also say, though, that when you go down and watch guys who like break down um Jordan Love's film, Jordan Love also, I don't believe, has played his best game. And I and I will say this, and not because he lacks the physical talent, I think there are still parts of the game mentally, he's still learning. We still see he he misses open guys, he doesn't always get to read three. So my point on it would be like people talk about the upside for Caleb Williams. I think part of that is the upside for Caleb Williams is because of 55 or whatever is completion percentage, there's a lot of room for growth. We know that Jordan's been better, but I still think so. Maybe Jordan Love doesn't have 30% growth in his own game, but I think he has 10 or 15 growth in just how he plays the game. And if he can make those strides, he's light years ahead of a Caleb Williams. I really believe that. I um so you know that just just my two cents. I gotta hop.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you had to go six minutes ago, and I imagine.
SPEAKER_04It started talking football, and I just told somebody this morning, God, I can't wait for football season, but god, I don't want the summer to be over.
SPEAKER_05So all right, all right, CC. Appreciate it. You know, here's the here's the thing. When when uh when we go to that format, um you know it as well as anybody does, Jeff treadmill. You you don't get a whole lot of words. I can talk a little bit, and CC can talk a lot a bit, you know. And he said earlier, you know, he's there's only so much Heller he can listen to. I get it. But you we don't get to hear you hardly at all today.
SPEAKER_00Uh you know what? I 32 years since sales, I think I made one sale by talking more than the person across from me, and I got lucky.
SPEAKER_05That is and and so where if you're if that's your investment and you're picking a five-year investment, where do you go on that money? And I listen, I I don't like the bears. I'm I'm just talking about it's my money. Which one do I think has a potential to give a greater return on investment over the next three to five years? And to me, I'm pointing south. I mean, it's it's it's him. Not that I want it to be, but that's where I would look. Or you could do it that way, that works too.
SPEAKER_00So if my internet's misbehaving, so if I drop again, that that's why you drop again.
SPEAKER_05I'll just finish. Don't worry about it. We're good.
SPEAKER_00I I know you will. Objectively, I I understand it. The the play that Caleb made when he had three guys hanging on to him, none of which were named Micah Parsons, by the way. And we had three people in coverage on the receiver. I mean, that that was the fourth and 26th Philly play. That play was that play will never, it'll haunt me the rest of my days for so many reasons. One, tackle the fucking guy. Number two, knock the football down. I mean, what what do you want here? And that's the game, by the way. They don't win without that play. I understand the attraction and the desire to put your money down south. He he is physically much more of a quarterback than 80% of the of the league's quarterbacks. He has a clutch gene. He came off that field several times in that game, dropping F-bombs, just like giving himself the business completely.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And he but he didn't quit. His head was never down. He got pissed off. Most of the time, when one gets pissed, it's it's a in the correlation is indirect. The more pissed off you get, the more your performance goes down. Not with that guy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I get, I get it. There's a lot there, but Court's not wrong. Trubisky, by the way, is not more physically talented. I whatever.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_00Court's not wrong about the we've seen this movie before. Like this hasn't been Caleb's problem yet, but there's a number 21 jersey signed right over there in this room. And Seawood's favorite thing was old Jay's gonna throw us some balls today. Just got to catch him. So it it if you do not, if he doesn't put a premium on completion percentage at some point, I'm sure someone would shove that up my ass and go, winning's more important. In the NFL, it's important. If he does not figure that part out, then I think we've seen his best days. If he does, yeah, I get it. But and Ben Johnson is a difference maker, there's no doubt. And that that could be all it takes for him to get it all sorted out because the the physical attributes are there. I just think CC's right. I don't think we've seen, and if we've seen the best of Jordan Love, then that's a shitty contract. That's a shitty contract. And I don't think we have. I don't even think it's close. Um, and that's why I put the receivers on on notice. I'm if if we want to be exhausted about something around here, it's that. It's whether it's their health, both Reed and Watson, more Watson than Reed. It's golden. I there's some pouting last year. Can it get out on the field and earn your fucking reps? I mean, those three guys need to help Jordan raise his game.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Um, I'll rant on this for a little bit uh on on a way out the door. So Jason, uh, he had two comments. One, uh, Ben Johnson is a hundred percent better coach than Matt LaFleur, uh, and he would love to have a coach with as much fire as Ben Johnson. Um so Jason, here here's the issue. If you want to play the uh the the body language police uh for a coach, then Andy Reid probably doesn't win you a Super Bowl. If you want to play the body language police on the head coach, uh there are just as many who have been stoic but fiery behind closed doors. If you want to talk about passion, what do you okay? So I got a I I got both hands raised. I don't know, and you don't know what Matt LaFleur does in a locker room or in prep with his team to get ready. That you don't like that he might be a pretty boy on a sideline because he looks too good. To me, I'm not that guy. I I've never been in the body language police business because all that is is it looks bad when you're not winning. So Craig Counsel got ridiculed a ton in Milwaukee. Well, looking at me, just stands there. What the hell do you want him to do? Pat Murphy is kind of he can be the same guy. And if they were losing, you'd be bit bitching about his body language, why he doesn't do this, why he doesn't do that. It's that's a result driver. Is Ben Johnson a really good head coach? We'll find out. He had a pretty good first year. He had a pretty good first year. Is he a really good NFL head coach? We get to find out over the course of time. When you say Ben Johnson is twice as good as Matt LaFleur, I would just say one's done it for seven years, one's done it for one. Can we see their record going forward? Because in the first three years in Green Bay, LaFleur won 13, 13, and 13 and coached in two NFC championship games. I don't see Ben Johnson having been there yet, one year in. I'm not telling you he's not, but you want what you can't have. You want the other team's guy. You probably want Dan Campbell was that guy two years ago. Is he that guy now? Is that who you want? I mean, see, it's it's that kind of BS that that I don't love. You can have an opinion on a coach. I get it. I'm not trying to tell you or trying to change your mind. But when you talk about uh you want his attitude, what do you know? What do I know? What do you mean? What do you know about the attitude? You don't know any more than I do, and I don't know any more than you do. But as I watch him on the sideline, I'm not going to results base my opinion on his passion.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I yeah, and and he comes back. I want fire. Okay. There's a lot of fiery head coaches that are unemployed.
SPEAKER_00It's not fire, it's winning. Professionals don't we, we, we, me included in the we, we don't under, we don't understand the mentality of a professional player. They don't need fire. In fact, and sometimes they don't want it. I love fire. I want Luke Fickle in the huddle on the sidelines during a timeout or commercial break. He's not there. He's not there. I I I do I do think he should be there, regardless of whether or not he's screaming at the at them or not. But professionals don't need fire. They they need tactician game tacticians, they need X and O callers when it matters most. If you want to be pissed off, Jason, I can get on board with this. On third and one, third and two, if you throw another ball downfield, Matt LaFleur, and and you can't convince me that love and he didn't audible to it, you're on my hot seat. I am done, done with the stupid game decisions when they matter most. You've got to move the chains. You can't continue to make these bullshit decisions. That I'm upset with. In terms of his his fire, I do think, Mike, you're right. I think there's plenty of fire in the locker room where it belongs. And the it pros don't need that shit. They're professionals, they're not playing little league.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Uh, hey, we we gotta run. We're we're at our time. Uh, Tred, I always appreciate you. Thanks for uh for being here. Um was it as good as last week? Superfan Tuesday and Kari.
