Brewers beat the Marlins 8-6 and have a chance to sweep the series on Sunday.  Milwaukee is now 61-37 and lead the Cubs by 6 games.

Hey, welcome to Brewed Daily. Uh, I'm your host, Mike Heller. The Brewers are the star of the show. They do it again today. This is uh impressive in lots of ways because they just faced Miami's two best pitchers. They'll get another good one tomorrow. And the Brewers didn't do it with the top of their rotation. All right, let's talk about this one because it's another fun one. And it didn't really start that way because the Brewers gave bad news to start off the day. Season-ending surgery for Brandon Woodruff. He got in front of the assembled media in the auditorium, said that he was going to have this and that he was going to attack the rehab from it to pitch again in Major League Baseball. He didn't want this to be a funeral procession. He's very upbeat. This is a leader. And uh so he announces that today. It's not surprising, but it does put a put a wrap on the concept of Woodruff pitching uh this season, certainly. Uh season-ending surgery. Also, 10-day IL for Sal Freelick with a strained right shoulder, left the game last night, dead arm. He said he's been battling it for a couple of months now. And uh so he goes on the 10-day IL. They call up Blake Perkins. Today, Shane Drowan on the mound, uh, five starts, his last five starts has given up three runs or less. He was taking on Max Meyer, who's nine and one with a 2-5-8 ERA. And the Brewers in the second inning, they get uh they get Brewered by Miami. Miami in the second inning goes double bunt, single bunt, fielder's choice, sack fly, scoring three runs. I really think, and Vinny pointed this out very well on uh the Brewers TV broadcast, that Drone did a great job to only give up three in the inning. You know, the double and then a bunt single, and then another single and then another bunt single. There it could have been a lot worse in the inning, and drone did a good job to get out with just two. In the bottom of the second, Garrett Mitchell and Lara both walk, or Mitchell singled and Lara walks. Mitchell to third on a fly ball and then scored on a sack fly. Speed kills, Garrett Mitchell showed that in the second, you're down three-one. Bottom of the third, Churio walked. There were a lot of them today by Miami. Steal second. There were a lot of them by Milwaukee. Uh scored on a double from Contreras, and you're down three-two. Now, I'm gonna skip ahead to the player of the game. It's Shane Drowen. So for me, Shane Drowan went six innings, five hits, three runs, all of them that I talked about in the second. He had a career high, nine strikeouts, and just one walk in the game. It is his sixth consecutive outing, and he's gone five innings or more in all of them, giving up three runs or less. This was a quality outing, six innings, five hits, three runs. Uh, I don't have an inning of the game. Deserves uh the other camera. I don't have an inning of the game, but if I did, it would be what I'm talking about next. The Brewers in the bottom of the sixth inning, a uh a Braden Schumacher double, and then back-to-back walks, load the bases, nobody out. Churio off the end of the bat, a single to center scores two. Milwaukee now leads it four to three. Bauer strikes out, Contreras ground ball leads to me to the play of the game in the inning of the game, of which I don't have an inning of the game. Play of the game, Garrett Mitchell. Camber two. Why would Miami pitch to Garrett Mitchell? It's not really a question for here, it's a question for there. You've got runners at second and third, two outs in the inning, Luis Lara, the rookie, up next. Garrett Mitchell leads all of baseball in hits in the month. He already had a hit today. He had the game winner last night. Why do you pitch to Garrett Mitchell? Well, I'm glad they did, because that leads to the moment of the game. First base is open. The Marlins pitched to him after a bad check swing call. And then a 3-1 bad strike call that Mitchell didn't challenge. He delivered on a 3-2 line drive to left center, scores two runs, and he ends up making it into a double, a hustle double, two runs, third hit of the day, 23rd hit of the month, and the Brewers lead 6'3. They tag on two more, became really important because Yuribe got the seventh. He was clean, one hit, three strikeouts, bottom of the seventh, Ortiz with the uh second and third, nobody out. Ortiz struck out, but Yelich doubled on a 3-2 pitch. By the way, Kristen Yelich was 9-4-50 before that two-run double in the month of July. 9 for 50 is a 180 batting average. And he delivered. The captain did with the double into the corner. Huge because Craig Yoho came on. Here's an interesting stat on Craig Yoho. He comes on and gets the eighth. When he finished the eighth, he had then completed a July Craig Yoho no hitter. He had worked nine full innings in the month of July and not given up a hit. But he sent him back out for the ninth. Right move. Yoho didn't live up to that moment. Uh hit by pitch, a walk, and a three-run homer. He's gone. Trevor McGill comes on. He gets the next three hitters, a strikeout, a strikeout, a ground to third, and then another, the the last out. I forget even where the last out went. Does it matter? Um, I think it was a ground ball short. So the Brewers win at 8-6. What needs to be better? Not much. They had seven walks in the game. That's what I was talking about. And the Brew had six stolen bases, and they scored eight straight runs after trailing three to nothing. Go on and win at 8-6. Standings update today. Cubs won as well. Brewers 61-37, six full game lead over the Cubs, who are 55-43. St. Louis lost, so it's a nine and a half game lead over the Cardinals. Pittsburgh nine and a half back as well. Cincinnati 16 games back. I'll stop talking about St. Louis and Pittsburgh and Cincinnati soon. It's really a Brewers-Cubs and it's a six-game lead over the Cubs. What's next? It will be Yuri Perez, who is also very good for Miami. You're seeing their three best, and you got a chance to sweep the series. Robert Gasser wants to put last Sunday behind him. He did not pitch well, pitched terribly last Sunday. He gets the start tomorrow. Hey, how about this one? The Brew get a win. That's a great win over a really good Miami team. You're going to look at and say, really good Miami team? Just look at the standings. It is a really good Miami team, and the Brewers take care of their business today. And that is a wrap.
