has finished his race. 00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:28.399 How many of you know everyone has a different race? 00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:31.360 Your race won't look like my race. 00:09:31.600 --> 00:09:34.000 Your race might be shorter or longer. 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:36.720 Your race will take you through different places. 00:09:36.960 --> 00:09:40.639 But the key part about it is the one who has authored the race is God. 00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:42.320 He's the one who has laid it out. 00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:48.000 He's the one who has determined it, and he is the one who's given us the 00:09:59.440 I'm gonna leap ahead to verse 24, where Paul says this. 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:03.440 I'll give you the context as we go into the message. 00:10:03.600 --> 00:10:23.120 But he says this in verse 24 I do not account my life of any value, nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I receive from the Lord Jesus to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:28.799 A whole lot there that we'll unpack, but you hear his heart. 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:30.799 I want to finish my course. 00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:33.279 It's the same Greek word, it's race. 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:39.360 I want to finish my race, I want to finish the course the Lord has laid out for me. 00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:41.200 I want to finish. 00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:47.919 And if I could put words in the apostle's mouth, I would say that it's not enough just to finish. 00:10:48.080 --> 00:10:49.360 I want to finish well. 00:10:50.320 --> 00:10:52.799 Now at this point in his life, he's not in control. 00:10:53.039 --> 00:10:54.320 Like I said, he's in prison. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:10:55.759 His freedom has been taken away. 00:10:55.840 --> 00:10:58.399 He can't run to different places and plant churches. 00:10:58.559 --> 00:11:00.240 That season has passed. 00:11:00.399 --> 00:11:04.000 That's why he's able to say, I have run the race. 00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:16.080 But I think a word for all of us would be not just to finish, because we've got so many freedoms, we have so many liberties, we've got so many things that we can do with our time and our money and our resources. 00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:25.279 But I want all of us to think today am I going to finish well if I keep on this path? 00:11:26.159 --> 00:11:30.000 Will this lead to finishing strong? 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:36.480 I think what all we all want to do who call Jesus Lord is to finish strong. 00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:46.080 And so there are just two questions I want us to think about and meditate on as we go through the text this morning, verses 17 through 27. 00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:50.639 Number one, are you faithfully running the race Christ has given you? 00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:53.919 We'll unpack a little bit about that. 00:11:55.039 --> 00:12:00.159 Are you faithfully running the race that Christ has given you? 00:12:00.559 --> 00:12:07.440 And secondly, are you determined to finish the race that Christ has given you? 00:12:16.159 --> 00:12:18.080 All right, let's set the scene here. 00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:24.480 Uh we're at verse 17, and up to this point, this is part of what's called Paul's third missionary journey. 00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:35.840 And at this point in his third missionary journey, he had spent three years in Ephesus, and he had just saturated Ephesus and all of Asia with the gospel, so much to the point that it affected the economy. 00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:49.120 People who were in the idol-making trade were seeing their profits plummet because the gospel was going forward, and so many people were believing and understanding that idols are not gods. 00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:52.480 I don't need to buy your little trinket, your little idol that you make. 00:12:52.960 --> 00:13:10.639 And so the the industry is beginning to collapse, and a silversmith stirs up a riot, and by God's grace, Paul is protected, his partners are protected, no harm comes to them, but it's time to leave. 00:13:10.879 --> 00:13:12.720 That's how he leaves Ephesus. 00:13:12.960 --> 00:13:20.080 He leaves Ephesus and then goes into a region called uh Macedonia, where there's churches like the church of Philippi and Thessalonica and others. 00:13:20.159 --> 00:13:20.960 He goes through there. 00:13:21.039 --> 00:13:29.600 He he he he gets into uh Corinth, he gets into the area they called, you know, Greece, he gets into there and he makes it to Troaz, and he's determined. 00:13:29.759 --> 00:13:37.440 See, the reason why he was going through all those churches is because he was collecting an offering to give to poor Jewish Christians in Jerusalem. 00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:41.919 And it would be a symbolic act showing the oneness of the body of Christ. 00:13:42.080 --> 00:13:51.919 That you have people professing Jesus who are Gentiles, but in Christ, they are part of the family of God, like everyone who had been born a Jew. 00:13:52.159 --> 00:14:00.320 There are no more, the middle wall of partition, if you will, the dividing, the divided Jews and Gentiles has been torn down in Jesus. 00:14:00.559 --> 00:14:25.200 So there's one body, and collecting this offering amongst Gentile churches, many of those who are doing financially better than the churches in Jerusalem in Jerusalem, connecting this, collecting this offering and doing it in a way that was above board and above any criticism, doing it and then delivering it would have made a powerful statement to the Jewish Christians that we have a family. 00:14:26.320 --> 00:14:28.320 Because we have saints. 00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:35.519 We used to call dogs, but now they're brothers and sisters, and look how they're providing for us. 00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:38.799 That was his passion toward the end. 00:14:39.039 --> 00:14:41.440 Got to get this offering to Jerusalem. 00:14:41.600 --> 00:14:46.799 And he wanted to get it at a point, get there where there would be a number of Jews present. 00:14:47.279 --> 00:14:48.960 Want to get there by Pentecost. 00:14:49.039 --> 00:14:51.120 That's what would be on the calendar. 00:14:52.399 --> 00:14:59.840 So as he leaves Troaz, he's on a boat and he skips over Ephesus because he's going down south. 00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:03.679 He said, I don't have time to stop there because I might get hung up there. 00:15:04.240 --> 00:15:10.320 But he stops in a little city, a little town called Miletus, 30 miles south of Ephesus. 00:15:10.559 --> 00:15:20.240 And verse 17 says that he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. 00:15:21.360 --> 00:15:25.919 He calls for the elders of the church to come to him. 00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:33.200 Now we'll dive in a little deeper on that next week about elders, but think here, you're talking about the leadership in the church. 00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:39.440 You think about the fact that they they're plural, there are multiple elders at the church at Ephesus. 00:15:39.679 --> 00:15:49.360 Elder, you know, you just look at the word, it means older, but by the time it's being used here, it's leadership within the church, mature in the faith. 00:15:49.759 --> 00:16:05.679 We'll talk more about this, about the elders, but just get just the picture is he's he's sent, he's dispatched a messenger to go 30 miles and go to tell the elders at the church at Ephesus, Paul is in my leaders and he wants to see you. 00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:08.240 He he needs to see you. 00:16:08.960 --> 00:16:10.159 Come along. 00:16:10.639 --> 00:16:22.480 So Paul waits in my leaders for about five days, because that's how long it would have taken them to go, the messenger to go there, and for the elders to make them wet their way to him. 00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:26.559 Verse 18. 00:16:28.639 --> 00:16:36.000 And when they came to him, he said to them, now pause. 00:16:36.320 --> 00:16:39.279 This section is unique in the book of Acts. 00:16:39.759 --> 00:16:46.639 This is the only place where you have the Apostle Paul giving an address directly to Christians. 00:16:47.360 --> 00:16:49.519 We're gonna have him later as we study Acts. 00:16:49.600 --> 00:16:53.440 He's gonna give address to leaders, you know, those who are in authority in Rome. 00:16:53.519 --> 00:16:59.039 And we've seen him give sermons to Jews and Gentiles and so forth. 00:16:59.279 --> 00:17:04.720 But this is a message just for Christians and in particular Christian leaders. 00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:17.119 But he's giving uh Christians, believers, an address, a message, and it's in the format of what's called a farewell address. 00:17:17.920 --> 00:17:33.519 You see it periodically in the Bible, and and one good example is when the prophet slash judge Samuel gave his last word to Israel, it was in the format of what's called a farewell address. 00:17:34.480 --> 00:17:47.119 It would have first, first of all, the first one of the first or major points of it is like a a uh retelling of the example that he lived. 00:17:47.759 --> 00:17:53.119 Kind of like a way, if there anyone who would come along afterwards, again, this is a farewell address. 00:17:53.279 --> 00:18:01.359 If anyone should come afterwards and say something about me, you know how I have lived. 00:18:02.319 --> 00:18:04.319 You know how I have lived. 00:18:05.200 --> 00:18:09.119 A second part of it of a farewell address would be a warning. 00:18:10.079 --> 00:18:11.039 A warning. 00:18:12.480 --> 00:18:18.960 Something is important church, and you could say the most important church in Asia because of so many of the churches they helped uh establish and plan how many believers are hearing the gospel and going forward. know, a reminder of his ministry and so forth, he doesn't call forth the miracles. 00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:44.799 He doesn't talk about all the great people who uh were healed and the demons that were know how I have lived. 00:19:54.720 --> 00:19:57.519 You know that's how you can tell a false prophet. 00:19:59.599 --> 00:20:05.359 Somebody could give you a little bit of truth, a little bit of a snippet here and there. 00:20:05.680 --> 00:20:10.079 But also, but times people adulterate the gospel by what they leave out. 00:20:13.119 --> 00:20:27.599 Because if you leave out the core some core components, such as we've all sinned, such as there's eternal punishment, such such as uh a man's uh sinfulness and can't can't save himself, you leave those parts out, even though you have the other elements. 00:20:27.759 --> 00:20:31.119 If you don't put all the pieces together, it's a false gospel. 00:20:33.039 --> 00:20:36.160 But Jesus said, watch their fruit. 00:20:37.200 --> 00:20:39.200 That's how someone lives. 00:20:39.599 --> 00:20:45.920 If they're trying, if they're greedy or if their flesh is leading in their decision making, you'll see it. 00:20:46.160 --> 00:20:54.240 You'll
