we are in Acts chapter 21, and we're bridging 21 into 22. 00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:07.040 And uh we are taking a look at Paul. 00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:18.560 Uh the apostle Paul has concluded his third missionary journey, and at this point he is in Jerusalem, and and he has uh well been apprehended. 00:02:18.800 --> 00:02:22.560 Uh and we'll pick up where we left off uh last week. 00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:42.479 But in Wednesday night Bible study, we were studying in a book, and the book is uh is called Bible Studies for Life, and this week's lesson that we studied had a very interesting uh statistic in it that I hadn't thought of or I had thought of, but I didn't think it was this large, this number was this large. 00:02:43.280 --> 00:02:48.960 It said that 72% of Americans have a gym at Acts 21 and into 22, what we'll see is Paul giving his conversion story in his own words. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:07:08.079 And we will see, again, that before, then Jesus, and then after, and we'll 00:07:54.000 There's a false teaching that says that you can accept Jesus as Savior and reject him as Lord. 00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:02.240 A false teaching that says, I believe Jesus died for my sins and yet not bow to him. 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:10.480 I can have Jesus and all the forgiveness of my sins, but not make him Lord. 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:15.680 I want to tell you that is false teaching. 00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:27.199 Jesus is Lord of all, or he's not Lord at all, and you're going to bow now or later, but you have to make him Lord. 00:08:27.360 --> 00:08:32.159 You have to submit to his Lordship in order to be saved. 00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:39.360 Saving faith receives Jesus as Savior and bows to Jesus as Lord. 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:50.399 We're familiar with some of these passages, Romans 10, 9, because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 00:08:50.720 --> 00:08:52.799 but to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. 00:09:25.759 --> 00:09:28.399 It's not about just receiving him as Savior. 00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:30.480 You have to bow to him as Lord. 00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:33.120 Here's 1 John 2, 4. 00:09:34.320 --> 00:09:40.799 John says, Whoever says I know him, but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:54.480 And what that means is someone who consistently lives in sin, yet claims to know him, and there's no transformation, there's no fruit, that person's not saved because they've never made Jesus master. 00:09:55.679 --> 00:10:04.879 Not talking about stumbling, he talks in the same letter about the fact that you're going to sin, that you sinned, but he's saying sin can't be your lifestyle. 00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:13.840 And claim Jesus as Lord and deny his spirit that will work inside of you and transform you into his image. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:15.679 You can't be saved and be that way. 00:10:15.840 --> 00:10:18.399 Jesus is Savior and Lord. 00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:22.879 Saving faith requires both. 00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:27.120 Paul is an example of it. 00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:37.759 And today, as we take a look in scripture, we'll see how he made surrendered to Jesus the thing that happened was someone, and that one was Jesus. 00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:48.639 If you remember last time that we were together, Paul had and his crew had arrived in Jerusalem with a large offering collected from Gentile churches to be given to poor saints in Jerusalem. 00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:51.919 A sign that the church is one Jew, Gentile. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:53.519 The middle wall has been divided. 00:10:53.600 --> 00:11:01.600 There is no racism any longer because Jew and Gentile are together, brothers and sisters in Christ. 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:04.799 That offering would have symbolized that. 00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:21.279 And they brought the large offering to Jerusalem and they were informed by uh the leaders there that there had been a pernicious lie that had spread that Paul was going around the world in the diaspora where Jews were spread around the world and telling them not to obey the customs of Moses. 00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:25.440 Don't circumcise your children, uh, don't observe those different prayer times. 00:11:25.679 --> 00:11:27.840 You do you have to change and be a Gentile. 00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:30.720 And Paul's like, Well, never said that. 00:11:30.879 --> 00:11:33.279 He said none of those things save you. 00:11:34.159 --> 00:11:43.919 But he didn't say that you can't use some of those taking vows and things like that as an expression of worship. 00:11:44.080 --> 00:11:48.720 It's when you make them commands or to or say that they are requirements for salvation. 00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:56.000 He never said what they said, but it was so pernicious, they said, you have to do something, you just can't argue it away. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:12:00.639 So he he they they had a plan and they said, make this uh collect an offering. 00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:26.960 You've got four men who are concluding a vow and and and do their uh a vow, as they're completing their vow, there's a requirement of sacrifices, pay for the sacrifices, do the purification, uh all of the purification procedure, which would have been a seven-day procedure, do all of these things, and everyone will see, not just here, but everyone will see that all those accusations that that you're telling people to do away with the law, people will see that that's nonsense. 00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:32.240 And Paul agrees. 00:12:34.720 --> 00:12:36.240 This is Pentecost. 00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:45.039 This is around Pentecost, some 25 years after Jesus had ascended and the day of Pentecost, the church was born. 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:47.679 This is about some 25 years later. 00:12:48.720 --> 00:13:02.720 But there are a lot of Paul haters, and Pentecost was a time when all Jews would descend upon Jerusalem, and it was crowded, filled thousands, some say over a million Jews would gather. 00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:23.120 Paul, as part of this purification uh procedure, he has to go to the temple multiple times, and there one day he's there, and there are some Jews from Asia, Asia where he had preached and taught for several years and made many enemies. 00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:41.120 Some Jews from Asia saw him and they said, Men, we there he is, he's the one, he's the man, and they formed a mob, attacked Paul, beating him, intending to kill him, because they had a new lie. 00:13:41.360 --> 00:13:43.840 He brought a Gentile into the temple. 00:13:45.039 --> 00:13:50.960 Paul didn't do that, he had his homeboy Trophemus with him, but he didn't take him into the temple. 00:13:51.519 --> 00:13:56.399 But you tell a lie enough, somebody will believe it. 00:13:56.720 --> 00:13:58.399 False accusations. 00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:00.399 We talked about that last time. 00:14:05.679 --> 00:14:09.840 Roman commander sees it, rushes in, there's a huge crowd. 00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:15.519 He has some men with him, he's got beef on either side, and they go in and they get Paul. 00:14:16.960 --> 00:14:20.720 And the people, all the mob, they just kind of settle down. 00:14:21.120 --> 00:14:24.879 And the commander's trying to figure out what's going on, what's all this? 00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:26.559 And folks didn't even know. 00:14:26.639 --> 00:14:29.200 They were saying one thing, another, they didn't even know what was going on. 00:14:29.279 --> 00:14:29.519 Why? 00:14:29.600 --> 00:14:31.039 They were beating the man. 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:34.320 He's within an inch of his life. 00:14:35.519 --> 00:14:39.759 And listen, there's a big mob, and then there's one man everyone wants to kill. 00:14:39.919 --> 00:14:43.279 So the commander said, Let's just get Paul out of the way. 00:14:44.320 --> 00:14:50.720 So they imagine this, they have to pick him up and carry him out. 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:56.240 And now they are getting ready to put him in the barracks. 00:14:57.440 --> 00:14:59.360 Because they need to find out what he's done. 00:14:59.440 --> 00:15:01.360 They need to do some investigation. 00:15:01.679 --> 00:15:05.679 But as we pick up now in verse 37, we see that they've got him. 00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:17.519 And it says in verse 37, as Paul was about to be brought into the barracks, he said to the tribune, This that is the uh commander, may I say something to you? 00:15:18.399 --> 00:15:21.279 And he said, Do you know Greek? 00:15:23.840 --> 00:15:30.240 Now, first notice, Paul, he's real polite about this, isn't he? 00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:34.639 You know, Paul Paul's first words out of his mouth were not a curse word. 00:15:34.799 --> 00:15:36.480 He wasn't yelling or anything like that. 00:15:36.639 --> 00:15:39.279 First thing he said, May I ask you a question? 00:15:42.559 --> 00:15:48.159 No, the Holy Spirit will make you composed in the midst of your adversaries and all the others around. 00:15:48.320 --> 00:15:50.639 He'd made, hey, he was composed. 00:15:51.360 --> 00:15:53.360 And I forgot to tell you this part. 00:15:53.600 --> 00:15:56.159 Paul's chains were his deliverance. 00:15:57.360 --> 00:16:01.200 It was prophesied that he would be bound. 00:16:01.600 --> 00:16:08.320 Prophet named Agabas, and he was bound, but they say those chains saved him, saved his life. 00:16:09.360 --> 00:16:11.440 But can I ask you something? 00:16:13.120 --> 00:16:16.320 Tribune, right away, he's thrown off his game. 00:16:16.559 --> 00:16:18.720 He says, Do you know Greek? 00:16:20.639 --> 00:16:22.639 He's surprised by that. 00:16:23.120 --> 00:16:25.919 Because he had assumed something about Paul. 00:16:26.720 --> 00:16:28.720 Are you not the Egyptian then? 00:16:28.960 --> 00:16:35.440 Who recently stirred up a revolt and led the 4,000 men of the assassins out into the wilderness? 00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:39.360 See, he had a thought in his mind of who Paul was. 00:16:40.320 --> 00:16:47.840 And it wasn't, look, it wasn't that Paul uh was you know a scholar. 00:16:49.360 --> 00:16:52.159 He he hears him speak Greek. 00:16:53.679 --> 00:16:57.519 And not just Greek, but refined Greek. 00:16:59.120 --> 00:17:06.319 I mean, he's speaking using five-dollar words, you know, not just 25 cent words. 00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:09.039 He's speaking, he's who had a revolt. 00:17:23.759 --> 00:17:28.240 He said, 4,000 stirred up that 4,000 men of the assassins. 00:17:28.319 --> 00:17:36.240 If you've played video games, you know of a series called Assassin's Creed, and they would have these little short blades and they'd come up and they'd kill people. 00:17:36.400 --> 00:17:40.640 Well, that's what these group y'all get the visual. 00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:45.599 They'd have a little blade, you know, real easily concealed. 00:17:46.079 --> 00:18:03.519 What this group of assassins would do, these were Jewish radicals who would have these little knives, and if they saw someone in a crowd who was a Roman sympathizer, they would sneak up on them and suddenly they just fall out, and no one would know who did it. 00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:27.680 This Egyptian man led people, he was charismatic apparently, and he led a bunch of them, claiming to have had a word from God, and eventually led them out into a desert, and the Romans tried to find him, and some Jews tried to find him too, because he's they were killing Jews, but he had escaped. 00:18:29.200 --> 00:18:34.559 The commander thought, as he saw that crowd and
