Hello, and welcome to the Scooby Zone, the podcast where Scooby Snacks won't work on me this time, as we watch a bit of Scooby-Doo media. I'm Rob. And I'm Katie. And today we'll be watching Foul Play in Funland, episode eight of Scooby-Doo. Where are you?
SPEAKER_01Wow, we're on episode eight already.
SPEAKER_00Can you believe that? Are you ready for a fun time in Funland?
SPEAKER_01I guess we'll have a fun time in Funland. All right, I'm ready for this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You guys are you can always email us at ScoobyZonepodcast at gmail.com with any comments, questions, whatever you want to talk to us about. Please do so. We want to hear from you. You can also find us at the Scooby Zone on Facebook, The Scooby Zone Podcast on Instagram, and at the Scooby Zone on X, formerly known as Twitter. So do you have anything for the start of this episode? I don't think so. Foul play in Funland. Like this is a I swear, this has got to be a fan favorite of a lot of people.
SPEAKER_01I think so too. It's a pretty good episode. I don't see why it would be.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You know, Charlie the robot.
SPEAKER_01Yep, Charlie the Robot. Yep.
SPEAKER_00You know, he's kind of an iconic.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he actually kind of is pretty iconic for the Scooby-Doo series.
SPEAKER_00Spoilers for a you know six decade-old cartoon at this point, probably.
SPEAKER_01Spoiler alerts for those of you who apparently haven't seen it yet, which doesn't make any any sense. But all right, we'll see.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01What better way to watch it than watch it with the people from the podcast? I couldn't think of anything better. You need the professionals on this one. Exactly. Oh man. All right.
SPEAKER_00So, yeah. We won't chew up too much of your time right now. We'll go ahead and get started with the episode. We'll split up, look for some clues, and we'll be right back. And we're back. That was foul play in Funland. Man. And there was some foul play going on.
SPEAKER_01There was definitely some foul play. I'd say sabotage. Man.
SPEAKER_00Boy. But we'll get there. We will get there. Alright. So we open with the game Clam Hunting on the Beach.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And we find out that Scooby doesn't like clams.
SPEAKER_01No, apparently he doesn't like them.
SPEAKER_00So apparently there is one thing that he will not eat. That is one thing he will eat. Which is good for Shaggy because he likes clams.
SPEAKER_01He likes them. They're good enough to eat.
SPEAKER_00They're talking about how nice it would be if the nearby amusement park Funland was open when all of a sudden the lights go on, which they find strange because it's not supposed to be open for a couple of weeks yet. Yep. So they decide to go check it out. And they split up right away. Of course. Shaggy and Scooby go for some food and are surprised when they get their food. Fred and the girls find a bottle toss game where you throw a ball at a stack of bottles. Fred knocks them down and goes set them back up when they notice that they're already restacked.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And there's a prize sitting on the counter.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And when he pays for it, the cash dragon.
SPEAKER_01Cash register rings up 25 cents.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_01Hmm. That's not weird at all. That's not mysterious. No, it's not. No, definitely not.
SPEAKER_00Shake and Scooby catch sight of a running away figure that resembles a man from Mars.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yes, the man from Mars.
SPEAKER_00They chase it into a hall of mirrors where they have a lot of fun looking at all the fun different mirrors. Yep. Where all of a sudden Scooby sees a giant mouse.
SPEAKER_01Not a giant mouse. A giant mouse. Why would we see a giant mouse? Because it's just a regular size mouse that's that looks giant with a mirror. Oh, it's a giant mouse.
SPEAKER_00In which Shaggy then notices the man from Mars in the mirror.
SPEAKER_01Standing next to him in the mirror.
SPEAKER_00So they run out.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Fred and Daphne and Velma see the man from Mars going on to a Ferris wheel. And you know, they see it go up. But when the ride comes back down, he's gone. He's gone. And all of the lights start going down. They end up going to the caretaker's house. Yep. Did we get the name of the I thought we did. I know I know the woman is Sarah Jenkins, but they just refer to him as Mr. Jenkins.
SPEAKER_01I think so too. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I th I mean brother and sister.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they were brother and sister. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins. Yeah, they're brother and sister.
SPEAKER_00They explain what was going on, but both Mr. Jenkins and Sarah Jenkins dismiss it. Yep. And basically tell the kids to go off. Go do your thing, kids.
SPEAKER_01Don't mind us over here, yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Exactly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. The game, they decide to stake out the place because obviously they know what they saw. Yep. And you know, instead of a stake out, Shaggy wants to stake in. A stake in his stomach. That is. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Stake in me, that is. And Scooby's all for it. He's getting yum yum yum.
SPEAKER_00And you know, as soon as they see the lights go back on in farmland, they'll go back to investigate.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00This time everything is going hands.
SPEAKER_01Everything's running backwards.
SPEAKER_00Yep, the merry-grounds backwards, cotton candies going everywhere. Hot dogs were going everywhere. Yep. We're shakey decides to then expertly catch them on a plate instead of just letting Scooby catch them in his mouth.
SPEAKER_01Well, he's hungry too. He's got, you know, he's gotta eat too. He hasn't eaten anything yet. Not really.
SPEAKER_00You know.
SPEAKER_01Man's gotta eat, you know.
SPEAKER_00They eventually catch the man from Mars going into the tunnel of love. They follow after, paddling a boat. When as soon as they get in, the man from Mars is swimming towards him like a human torpedo. Sinks their boat.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Daphne is all mad for him ruining her hair.
SPEAKER_01He'll make her pay for what he did to her hair.
SPEAKER_00So they continue walking around the funland where the man from Mars chases Shaggy and Scooby onto a roller coaster. In which while they're on the roller coaster, they're in the front cart, man from Mars is in the back, and he starts climbing over the seats.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Starts to.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Fred notices another roller coaster on a nearby track going in the opposite direction and slows it down so Shaggy and Scooby can jump to it.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00That's not safe. Don't do that. Don't do that.
SPEAKER_01No, definitely don't do that, guys. Um that's a safety concern for the episode.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Uh so Shaggy and Scooby escape the man from Mars, and when the original cart comes back down thinking they're able to catch him, it's empty. They notice him at the top of the roller coaster where he jumps off of it into a circus tent.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And when they go to see if he's injured, he's gone. Yep. So Shaggy makes a comment of how his eyes were like tail lights on a hot rod. In which Fred gets a brilliant idea of souping up an electric cart to chase after him. Uh-huh. Shaggy expertly flips the switch. Yep. Turning it on while Velma and Scooby are sitting in the front. Yep. It runs over a cable, knocking off Velma's glasses. So we can go ahead and take a drink for that. Yep. Definitely. Which, honestly, this is what, the second time in the whole series she's lost her glasses?
SPEAKER_01I think so, something like that.
SPEAKER_00Stuff for sure it would have been more by now.
SPEAKER_01I was thinking so too, but it's kind of weird how they don't have very many, but yet they've always put out that she loses her glasses.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's actually kind of amazing watching through these episodes and all these things that we immediately think of as being peak Scooby stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00Isn't really all that common quite yet.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not.
SPEAKER_00I'm curious. This is I'm curious what the final numbers will look like when we get in the series specifically. Yep. Yeah. Velma uh shows that she does have situational awareness without her glasses. Because she immediately forgets that they are in a amusement park and what they were doing. Yep. You know, saying that they're in a nice wide street. Yeah. And Scooby points out that the robot is in front of them. She thinks it's a traffic cop. She remarks that there are no brakes in the cart.
SPEAKER_01That's another safety concern. Yep. Make sure the cart has brakes in it, guys.
SPEAKER_00So they drive past our man from Mars robot. Just right past them, yeah. And which he chases after them.
SPEAKER_01Catching up, apparently. He's pretty good at that.
SPEAKER_00Just by walking, he catches up. Yep. They come to an oncoming train. Yep. In which Velma remarks that the train will just have to watch out for itself because there are no brakes.
SPEAKER_01What is that supposed to prove? That doesn't make any sense.
SPEAKER_00Scooby and Velma make it past the train, but the robot gets hit by the train, flying up into the air, and landing in the caboose. That kind of backfired. In which they then crash into a huge pile of cotton candy. For some reason the cotton candy is enough to stop them. Yeah. Fred remarks that it's a good thing they're safe. Velma says that they didn't have a lick of trouble. Ask Scooby. And Scooby slurps up the cotton candy that he's covered with. Yep. Man. They set a trap in which it's a giant crate. Not a bad trap. Where it would have actually worked. Where they have Scoob. The plan is Scooby will lure the man from Mars into the crate and he will be hoisted out in a basket.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And when proposed to Scooby of doing it, Scooby says no. No. And he says no to Scooby Snacks.
SPEAKER_01That's a first.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And Velma says that, you know, she'll go with Scooby. They'll take the cart again. And when she says no cards, she'll go and do it. So you guys. This episode doesn't have a Scooby snack. This episode.
SPEAKER_01No parts. At all. Not at all. Man.
SPEAKER_00Are we sure we watched Scooby?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, are we sure we watched the right episode? There's always gonna be a Scooby snack.
SPEAKER_00Right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Scooby's hiding in a barrel. Yep. Crashes into the robot. Yep. And then this starts running, runs into a wax museum, and hides as a couple of different wax figures. First as a caveman who kind of looks like Captain Caveman.
SPEAKER_01It does kind of look like Captain Caveman, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_00And now I'm curious as to when Captain Caveman made his debut.
SPEAKER_01We'll have to look into that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because I don't remember, I never really saw it, but I know the way I know about it's from the Laugh Olympics. Yeah. So he had to have been before the Laugh Olympics to have been mentioned in there.
SPEAKER_00Unless the Laugh Olympics was his first appearance. It could go either way.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I'll have to look at it.
SPEAKER_00Maybe this is where they got the idea for Captain Caveman.
SPEAKER_01Maybe it is where they're right. It could be.
SPEAKER_00But then he also dresses up as a a pirate. Yep, a red-coated pirate. Before leaving the wax museum, runs into the crate. Yep. Robot follows him. Gets locked in the crate. Scooby's hoisted out. The trap works.
SPEAKER_01It does.
SPEAKER_00Until the robot keeps running and crashes through the crate. To another box. Through a brick wall. Yeah. In which the you know, the game remark that he's not human.
SPEAKER_01Nope.
SPEAKER_00When, you know, out of nowhere, Mr. Jenkins appears and explains that he's a robot named Charlie that he built to help run the amusement park.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00But somehow the robot got out of control.
SPEAKER_01Hmm. I wonder who could have done that. We now get trap number two. Yay. Which it sounds like a really good trap. It sounds foolproof, but yeah, we're gonna have complications here.
SPEAKER_00And trap number two is a giant magnet. See? Sounds like a pretty good trap. Yep. And you know, it actually does work. It starts attracting the robot.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00When out of nowhere a hand cuts a wire.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00And the robot then runs and crashes into stuff and is just kind of laying there. Pretty much. Kind of just sitting there. Yep. We then find out that it was Sarah Jenkins who cut the wire because she caused Charlie to go out of control because she does not think that robots are fit to operate a place with children.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, not wrong.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Daphne agrees, saying that, you know, Charlie may be nice, but you know, kids need humans. So Mr. Jenkins is going to rebuild Charlie to be nice. And so we get Charlie the second. Charlie the second. And the next day the game goes to visit, you know, see how Charlie is doing. Yep. In which we see that he is scratching Scooby's ears. Yep. And all is good. And that's the end of the episode.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_00You know, it's a nice short one this year.
SPEAKER_01It is a nice short one. Yeah. I like that. Yep. Pretty good episode though, too. You know. It is.
SPEAKER_00Very surprised that there are zero Scooby snacks in this episode.
SPEAKER_01I know. I definitely wanna thought there were gonna be some in this episode, so that kind of stinks a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, but so maybe we'll make up for them later.
SPEAKER_00So now we get to do the fun stuff for the wrap-up of this episode.
SPEAKER_01Let's do the fun stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So, where do we want to start with?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's stupid. Let's go from the top, I guess. Didn't we always go from the top, technically? Technically, yeah. I mean well, I guess it doesn't matter where we start, but you know.
SPEAKER_00So, well, yeah, we'll start with the obvious with the snack intake of zero Scooby snacks.
SPEAKER_01Bringing our grand total to whatever the grand total was last week. Oh, geez.
SPEAKER_00Three, six, ten, fourteen. Eighteen plus one shaggy snack. Plus one shaggy snack.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01Alright. So eighteen plus one shaggy snack.
SPEAKER_00All right. Alright, the manifest of monsters. Yeah. Charlie the robot. Well, first let's go. Let's remind everybody what the current rankings are. Let's do it. At the bottom of the list, we have the ape-man. Because he was so lazy, he didn't even buy his own ghost costume. He just used the one provided for him. The one provided for him on man. Above him is the Vasquez Castle Ghost.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's probably the Black Knight Ghost.
SPEAKER_00The Black Knight Ghost. Okay. Minor 49er. Yep. Indian Witch Doctor. The ghost of Captain Cutler. Okay. And so far the best ghost of the series has been the ghost of Elias Kingston.
SPEAKER_01That is true. He is actually probably apparently one of the better ones because he catches everybody off screen. So that makes him even more interesting than the other ones. So Charlie the Robot. Oh, yeah, that's an interesting one. Well, he's still not as good as the one from Hex from What the Hex Going On. He's still not as good as that one. Let's see. He's obviously better than the Ape Man.
SPEAKER_00He's better than I think design-wise, I would put him above Captain Cutler.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. That would work.
SPEAKER_00You know. Yeah. He's not really like doing anything monstrous. Like technically he provides food for Shaggy and Scooby.
SPEAKER_01Right? Because he's probably the one they're making.
SPEAKER_00Does that mean he's the hero of the show?
SPEAKER_01I I guess, but that doesn't sound right. But I mean, I guess we can do that.
SPEAKER_00So at number two, we've got Charlie the robot?
SPEAKER_01I guess. Oh man. Oh right.
SPEAKER_00Alright guys. Now we've got the trap list.
SPEAKER_01Alright, the trap list. So are we doing both of them or just one of them? Um or to say they're both together and they're all like they're both together on the trap, or they both are supposed to have worked, and they would have worked if if one, it wasn't sabotaged.
SPEAKER_00We can almost kind of lump them together as the same trap, I think, because it's it's not like it's like last week, where they had the one trap, but then they had more going on before they did the giant slide.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Alright, we'll put it. So we'll just do well, we can call this one crate and magnet.
SPEAKER_01Okay, crate magnet.
SPEAKER_00So I mean But first I think we should name our trap list. Yep, definitely should name it. Listener AJ has provided the name the Fred Jones Failure Files for our trap list.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to AJ for creating a perfect name for our trap list.
SPEAKER_00Yes, thank you. Thank you. And I actually had a question for you. Should we retroactively count the biplane that they crash into the black knight ghost onto this list?
SPEAKER_01Ooh.
SPEAKER_00Because we have the dogs, which isn't really a trap.
SPEAKER_01Right, no. I mean, yeah, I mean, the plane that definitely could be a trap option. So I mean, so we have like two traps to add to this picture. So man.
SPEAKER_00So let's uh go off from the bottom of our trap list, and we will you know, then add uh to it. Right now, the worst trap we've got is the giant slide from last week. Yep, you know, it was just a giant slide.
SPEAKER_01It was just a giant slide. It worked, but yet it wasn't really anything special. You know, didn't really have anything special.
SPEAKER_00It was part of a movie set. Like his friend didn't even think of it really as well.
SPEAKER_01No, he didn't. He just kind of used it because it was there.
SPEAKER_00So number five is the instant suds. Instant Sud, which you know fire hose, bar of soap in a spray container.
SPEAKER_01That doesn't really add much for a crap.
SPEAKER_00Number four is dogs. Dogs, yep. It's just a stampede of dogs. But it's effective though, but not very special. Number three, we have the fake train that they did with a hand cart, a headlight, and Shaggy imitating a train. Yep. Number two is Special Effects, where they used a special camera and a whole bunch of just ridiculous nonsense to catch the ghost of Elias Kingston. Yep. Which also worked without a problem.
SPEAKER_01It actually did. One of the first ones I worked with without a problem.
SPEAKER_00And the number one best trap so far of the series is the better mouse trap. Built from a suit of armor and an old crossbow, an old screen.
SPEAKER_01Cannonball, an old spring. Yep. Oh man.
SPEAKER_00So what should we rank first? This week's or the first probably the first episode just to get it there and how would you rate Scooby trying to crash into a person with the biplane?
SPEAKER_01I mean, he actually was pretty successful. So I mean, I don't I don't know. Where do you want to I mean it's but obviously better than the buttons? It's obviously better than that. Obviously, better than them, unless you don't think I don't know. I mean, I think it's better than the dogs. Oh, yeah. Is it better than the fake train? I don't know. That's a tough one.
SPEAKER_00Both of them scooby crashing into the thing.
SPEAKER_01Those work. Alright. But it's probably not better than the special effects. So it's probably still down below. Unless you want to assume it's so depending on what's the thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's not better than special effects.
SPEAKER_01No, and definitely not better than a better mouse trap. So it's hmm, do you want to put it above fake train or below fake train? I know that's a tough one, isn't it? I didn't make think I'd make you think today. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Maybe, I don't know, maybe below, because Scooby is it. We don't want to condone Scooby turning those into real ghosts.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Alright. And so now we've got the crate and the magnet.
SPEAKER_01I mean, if they wouldn't have failed, but then again, they were sabotaged by unruly means.
SPEAKER_00Better or worse than special effects. Oh man. I mean I mean, this one gave us a giant magnet. Yeah, it worked. We're talking like Looney Tunes, giant magnetic ridiculousness.
SPEAKER_01It's acme it must have been Acme. Acme must have delivered it to him. Probably. Where's the coyote? Oh man, okay. Hmm. So are we saying it is better than special effects?
SPEAKER_00You think it's better?
SPEAKER_01I mean, if it would have worked, it probably would have been better than a better mousetrap, but it failed. So, but then that's because it was sabotaged. The yeah, they cut someone cut the wire, and then the other first part was because it was a robot that wasn't being held down by a crate or a wall of bricks.
SPEAKER_00And the crate would have worked if it was just the regular ghosts.
SPEAKER_01Regular ghosts, people. Oh, all right. Should we should we have it be below special effects and says it didn't technically work, but yet it was still better than all the other houses? I'm fine with that. All right. So I'm like, they were all foolproof traps. It just sucked that it was a robot involved that would have made it, you know, not work. Right. That's the only thing that sucked with it. I'm like, oh, those were really good traps. Yeah. I mean, you know, Fred really outdid himself with the first one, surprisingly, even though they're a failure trap list.
SPEAKER_00Okay. And so now I think that brings us to the Scooby-Zone table of snacks.
SPEAKER_01Oh, alright, the table of snacks.
SPEAKER_00So how many Scooby snacks would you rate this episode?
SPEAKER_01Oh man, I mean it was a really good episode, surprising. Even though it's not like one of my I like it, but it's not like one of my, you know, favorite tier episodes. But it still is a really I mean it's better than like Hassel in the Castle, you know, or like, well, I'd say decoy for Dog Navarro but the other one's for, you know, but it's like I mean, it's not a bad watch through. I mean, it's one that if it's on, hey, let's watch it. You know, it's not like oh, you see it and you're like, oh, I don't want to watch it at all, but it's like, hey, it's on, let's let's watch it, you know, so it's not yeah, you know, so I'd say it's a nice solid four. I was actually thinking it was gonna be a solid four myself. I didn't know what we were.
SPEAKER_00No, it's an enjoyable episode.
SPEAKER_01Um, I agree.
SPEAKER_00But uh it I don't know, it felt like it went by way too quickly.
SPEAKER_01It did, it felt like it was a quick episode.
SPEAKER_00Like there wasn't despite the game split up for pretty much the whole 80% of the episode, there wasn't a lot of just hijinks between going going back and forth. Like usually when you've got the game split up, like Shady and Scooby are getting into much more hijinks.
SPEAKER_01They are getting in much more trouble than they normally do.
SPEAKER_00And this is the second episode in a row where the mystery machine's not there.
SPEAKER_01No, it's not. That's weird. Yeah, you always see the mystery machine.
SPEAKER_00Which makes this like the third episode so far with no mystery machine. Yeah, I think yeah, it's on the case. Because there's no mystery machine in Hassel for the Castle. No, there's not one. Hassle in the Castle.
SPEAKER_01Because you don't like the Hassle in the Castle.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I said Hassle for the Castle before.
SPEAKER_01You might have.
SPEAKER_00And if not, now I just completely messed this all up. But you all get to listen to it.
SPEAKER_01Yay!
SPEAKER_00We're having fun.
SPEAKER_01We are, aren't we? That's what matters. That's what counts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh man.
SPEAKER_00But yeah. So yeah, it's really weird when we don't see the mystery machine.
SPEAKER_01I know, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00That's just like you would always think it'd be there, but and the mystery machine has not broken down as often as you think it would yet.
SPEAKER_01No, it hasn't, which is surprising.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because that's another kind of problem that happens in later episodes or later series, I should say, where they well, no, it's doesn't it break down at least one episode coming up? I think it does. The Haunted House hangup, doesn't it break down in that one? I don't know if it breaks down anytime before that. Um I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00I don't believe so.
SPEAKER_01I mean, we'll we'll we'll we'll get to that point when we get there. But I'm thinking that is I mean, that could be another option for us to put in two of the time the right time the mystery machine breaks down. But that might be well, that might be for like later series where that happens. Yeah. We won't might not do it this time because it's not gonna make any sense. I mean, if we do have to add them, we could, but I don't know if I see anything in the we'll get to that when we get to it. Yep, we'll get when we see more than one pop up that's you know able to be mentioned, then we'll start talking about it. Right. Yep.
SPEAKER_00Alright, what's all right, so what's alright, what's all right. I think that just about wraps up this episode for us. Episode eight in the books, guys. Yeah, it was kind of a short one this week.
SPEAKER_01It was, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_00Alright. So we'll be back next week with the backstage.
SPEAKER_01Backstage Rage, which this time is gonna be on a VHS copy we're gonna watch from the greatest mysteries. Yep. So we're going back in time, guys, to watch it on VHS. So if you have it on VHS, break it out and you'll watch Backstage Rage with us. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So until then, you guys, just remember they would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling kids.
