Welcome back, ladies, to another episode of Golf Card Chronicles. And I think it's episode three, where the golf is unpredictable, the conversations are raw, and somewhere between the T-Box and the green, real life unfolds. Today's guest is a young bloke who honestly gives me a heap of hope for our next generation. Patrick Murdoch is only 16 years old, but spend five minutes with him, and you'll quickly realize this kid's carrying himself like a grown man. Respectful, driven, grounded, and quietly resilient. Life hasn't exactly handed Patrick an easy run either. Growing up around instability, family hardship, parents' divorce, and having to mature well before most kids of his age. He could have easily gone the other way. But instead of becoming bitter, he became better. Golf gave him something: discipline, belonging, purpose, a tribe. And now this young bloke wants to give back by helping create a stronger junior culture at the Townsville Golf Club, building opportunities, connections, and a voice for younger players coming through, being accepted. This episode isn't just about golf. It's about resilience, respect, mental health, family, and becoming the sort of person you wish you had growing up. So jump in the cart with us as we tackle nine holes, a few laughs, a couple of shocking shots, and one bloody good conversation. This is episode three of Golf Cart Chronicles with Patrick Murdoch. Patrick, welcome to Who is Your Hero and Let's Roll. Thanks, Matt. Thanks for having me. What an honour it is to be here today. It's not an honor, it's an honor to have you here. Thank you. Yep. Who is Patrick Murdoch? So who are you? What's life look like at 16 for you? And why do people say you're 16 going on sex? Um, well, I think as a 16-year-old, I was raised in a sort of an environment where I had to learn to mature. Yeah. You've got brothers and sisters? Yeah, it does. I've got two other brothers. I got um Are you the oldest? Yeah, I'm the oldest of three. Yeah. One is to uh our first father and the second is to our other father, same mother. Yeah. It's yeah, I think I'll just hit this shot quickly. Get on the hill. I don't know that part, yeah. Yeah, I think um yeah, I had to learn to be a bit more mature. And that's sort of sort of what shaped me. Yeah, but you're still with a bit of hardship and we won't go into that. We don't need to do that on cart conibles. That's okay. You still could have gone the other way. Or did you feel that you had to to w look after your other siblings and your mum, maybe? I'm thinking yeah, it was I think it was tough for my mum growing up. It was a bit a bit of a hard sort of environment, but we managed to get through it a lot. Everything went my way though, and everything everything sort of went our way, that how we pictured it. Yeah. Because we wanted, you know, ch turned our life around pretty quickly. Here I was there, just having a go, grip grip gripping in together. Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's just a matter of because that's the same thing for your mum. She could have gone another way too. Yeah, exactly. The best thing that ever happened is her recovering from everything and her being a happy soul and continuing living life. I know she does get a bit of stress uh over times, but I know she's a very good mum. So when did you were you born here? Yeah, I was I was I was born in Melbourne. And uh we moved to town so when I turned three. Uh part of Melbourne. Uh I was born in St. Alberts in the Sunshine Hospital. It's another tough area. It was yes, it was a very tough area. Moved up here when you were three. I was born in Melbourne. Oh, were ya? Where else? Cal, I think. Oh wow, okay. With a mercy, maybe I don't know. Yeah, somewhere. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I quite I c I can't remember it, but I quite enjoy living here. I've only been here a year. Oh yeah. And I I only here because of my kidneys, but uh I think I'll stay. Where'd you come from? Oh yeah, yeah, wow. From COVID, yeah. I just packed up everything and started driving. Didn't edit and all that government bullshit and say yeah. Then my kidneys failed. Oh really? That's horrible. Hello. Hap for a reason. I wouldn't have done all this podcast and helped so many people if I I was a pretty uh Yeah, I did a bit of um research on the whole situation with the podcast. I um pretty loose. Whoa. What's that for four? That was for five. That one. We're part again. One over, uh one over as a team. Solo boat bogey. Hey, get used to it, your shoulders will be sore playing golf with me. Oh well, you've won every other big team event still. Yeah, so a bit a bit like it. I've had it up and down through life, but yeah, yep. I've always dug deep. Yep. And turned um shit times into good times. Yeah, yep. And I think it's the only way to roll it. And uh you're showing plenty of that. Yeah, yep. So your childhood. Yep. You talked about, you know, your father was missing a fair bit, you had to step up. Yep. That's obviously made you tougher early. Was uh Did you think it was maybe normal or did you did you work out pretty quick that you're gonna have a different upbringing? Well it was it was tricky because at the start I was I was only nine years old when he left our house and I think it was tricky for mum and the family because mum had no one and she had two young boys, me and my brother Max. And I think the thing was we had to sort of adapt with what we had. And I think that made us stronger. So I've I've asked the question before, at that age, did you think it was normal or could you see other families different? You know what I'm trying to ask? Yeah, yeah, I know what you mean. Kids sort of just say, Well, this is what life is, let's go.

That's just we're so stunned, I think, about what was going on. Yeah. Well, that's that's a safe birdie there. Coward's corner. I didn't say you did it. I wasn't gonna say it to you. Uh that's in the water again. I go for a few at the duck. It's okay, we've all been there one day. I like that pin placement though. It's a good spot, isn't it? Much better to be there than anywhere else. See, golf to me is this, it's just fun. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I never get uh worry about my score or anything. I get very nervous about scores when it comes down to the city. Yeah, we're on a you're trying to be a pro? No, I don't know. I'll see how golf takes me in a year. And uh I've there's just so many kids at Townsville that want to be pro, and it's just I think it's hard. There you go. You go work on your game and you all walk in. Hopefully, that'd be awesome if I could, yeah. So when did golf enter your life? Your mum So your mum was just telling us in the c when you when she dropped you off that your grandfather must have been into it. My grandfather was a politician in Malaysia. Politician! He was the I think he was the governor general of Malaysia at one stage. And uh Wow, he enjoyed golf a lot. And I think I'm not sure, I think an angel on my shoulder said to me about golf because one day I had an obsession for um lawns. Mowing lawns. I know it sounds old, but um yeah, I thought maybe that was that was it. And oh my uncle plays a bit of golf down south in Brisbane, and I went to a driving range, picked up a club, had a swing, and I loved it ever since. And that was all in 2024. That's it. 2024. Wow. So it's quite recent. These greens have got slow. Yeah, they're very slow. Um quite recent and and yeah, that's um I was gonna be thinking you'd been playing for ages, as no, no. As maybe as uh I started off with a 43 handicap escape mechanism or something. Yeah, yeah. I mean I've dri I don't think you need it though. Talk watching holds your own, your ball again. Yeah, like I enjoy golf because it's a peace of mind. It's sometimes good to get out here alone and play a bit, but playing with the other juniors at this club's really enjoyable as well. So what makes you then I used to um thrive on hanging out with my dad's mates. Yep. Very very similar circumstances. Your age I was going to corporate boxes and events with dad. Yeah, yep. Going to his tennis, to his golf, everything because I wanted to I don't know, maybe I just wanted to learn off older people. I didn't have many young mates either. It was uh it was quite different. I think it was it's enjoyable playing. I still play a little bit of golf with my dad here and now. Yeah. He get he's getting there. Well, it wasn't as if this became his safe place either, was it? No, no, not really, because you didn't need it. My safe place and everywhere, no matter where it was, was my nana's house. Because that's how my nana looked after us very well. Do you still spend time with Nana? Every almost every day I spend time with Nana. Really? She's such a great person here, Lonnie. Cool. I wonder if we're gonna use one of my shots soon. Hopefully. What are we currently one over through two holes? Yeah. Yeah, but use one of my shots. You're one over at the moment. Well, a team effort, you know. Yeah. Good support. I'm just here for moral support. Watch out, though. I'll get a birdie in a minute. I really hope we could, but this could go anywhere. That's a far that's a that's a oh, a little bit short. Didn't think that. No, it's not short. That was right on it. Are we into wind or out of wind? I think it's besides sideways. Far to cross. Not that far. Tree corner. So I'm not really fussed about the ball situation. And then I just go to Danny's garage. He's got boxes of new balls and just take them down as you please. That is correct. Yeah. Shout out to Danny for providing you all that balls. All finance solutions, thank you very much. Packets of balls. So what's golf taught you in the short time you've been playing? In the short time I've been playing, uh, golf has taught me to be resilient. It's also taught me to keep pushing because great things are ahead. Yep. And overall, to just, yeah, I guess stay resilient is the main message uh I've worked out. Yeah, and it's it's a bit like life. I I see golf for people like that because you can have a bad couple of holes, which might relate to either a bad couple of hours. Yeah, yep. Or a bad couple of days, like I'm having today, right? Yeah, yeah. But that's a putt for me. But history says you can't have 18 bad holes. Well well, you can, but then your next round, well, I mean, you know what I'm trying to say? Yeah, I know what you mean. I mean shot away now from playing one of my shots. I felt really bad because I had never played a proper like junior event before. I mean, I played one, but second ever one I ever did, I played really like I don't know, the first couple of holes weren't too bad. And then I was getting birdies and par every hole, and I ended up winning the Townsville Junior Classic Met Boys Champion. And it was Why did you feel guilty? That's that's a good shot. Well, I didn't no, I didn't feel guilty. I just felt, you know, I felt like it was awesome. It's like I felt so awesome, beat you on the dice for the golf bags. I remember that, yeah. I was I was devastated, but anyway, you know. And it was nothing to do with golf. We did shoot eight under. Were you beating us? What did you guys shoot? We only shot seven, but rolled the dice well. Oh, okay. We only rolled a thing. And then did handle 21. Did we still had your there was still handicap involved on there? Oh really? Yeah, because then we got nine handicap for the four of us. Oh, well, our whole group was which you would have had. What what was your whole group? And you divided it by eight or something. I think five. Yeah, so you had five and then we rolled bigger dice. Yeah, yeah. I think. Who's old Merlin got there? Steve, he's a good bloke. Oh, yep. Do you know Steve well? Yeah, I know in the cart with the double decker car. Yeah. Is that his on the corner, is it? Yeah, he you turn in the phone check out there. Oh, what does he do for shit we're on my yep? That's the way. He didn't do much because he's the he's a good bloke. Yeah, yeah. Good mentor for you, too. Do you have much conversations with him? Oh, I haven't really had one conversation with him. I have. So what's giving you the confidence to just turn up and sit with the oldies? Because most kids wouldn't. Well, I think, yeah, a bit of resilience. Like I think my age group are out, you know, always partying and I I yeah, I tend to enjoy that a bit. But at the same time, it's always good to have a nice break from still hanging out with your mates and that, mate. Yeah, yeah, I still hang out with them heaps. So they're they're my the only they're only the only reason I'm getting through high school. Because they're good mates. Still give you. But you don't get on the piss or anything like that. No. Do they? Well, a lot they do a lot. I mean, I think that's one time where I got in the piss and she hated that fact. I promised that I'd never do it again and I kept my promise. Steve, Steve, how you going? But there. We're playing a two-ball ambrose, and I haven't had a shot yet. What are we? One over. One over and it's all Patrick. Fifteen. Me? Fifteen. He's one over after three. Stubborn kid. I've never played so well. I don't know what's going on. Do you know what? Marcy John coming here to podcast with me and his best round in two months. You're gonna you're gonna get us home on even here. Yeah, have you ever been even for the nine hours? No, I've never. Wow. My best ever front nine? Is? My best ever front nine was four over. Oh, we nearly killed that lady there. Where'd your manners come from? Me manners. I was always raised to to eat with like I think eating with, you know, cutlery and doing like just little things like that, and that's how we were fine-tuned. Me and my brothers were always raised very modest. We uh and that's all came from my nana, really, because her and my late granddad, they used to do a lot for us. And then when he So what would you say your mum Malaysian? My mum's Malaysian, that's true. There's plenty there's plenty of respect over there, bro. Well they've got, yeah, lots of I I remember we went there on a 2018 trip and they came up to us and they all bowed and put their hands to our things. It's yeah, they're very respectful. Spent a fair bit of time overseas, is yeah. Filipino Malaysian, yeah, yeah. Pap New Guinea and I know it's not the same. Um by no but um Oh I've been to I think at I think it's 18 months old. I went to America. Yeah. With that's where mum's mum lives now. She moved from Malaysia to America. Right. She loves it there. She lives in Seattle. America's not a bad country, but it's up for it's up the pole at the moment. Oh yeah.

That's I would say this golf, look at that. You just went on the shots, it's taken sucking four holes in the city. They were playing well. We got a part. I mean, imagine if this was a comp with our handicapped, we'd be flogging it. Oh, we would. We'd get it. And Townsville Golf Club Seagrade, I'm coming to get you. Oh, here we go. Hey, I was C-grade uh three weeks ago, I think. How do you catch these people? Don't they start at the start? I don't know, there's randoms everywhere actually. Well, the I thought the lady was in front of us. Did she was, yeah, she went back. Do you want to skip a hole? No, we better not. Nah. We'll be right. Why not just clack her in a minute and it looks? Hey. Better that one out play. Okay, what was that? Hole four. Hole four, yeah. Yeah, I talked about your manners, didn't we? We sure did. Do you think respect at at at your age and your um peers and that is is disappearing a bit? Yeah, that's a because I know when I was growing up, if some of the kids talked to me like they did or or how they pick on people and all that, I would have got a fucking right rule of hiding. Yeah, that's just sad because And you know how to give those hidings in. Half my age in Townsels out stealing cars now, so it's quite sad to see. I think people with and you should see school. I go to Pimlico State High School. Oh, is that pretty rough? It's the manners there, kids do not have any manners, and that's why the teachers have a lot of respect for me. I don't get very good grades, but I get passing grades. You don't have to, you just gotta learn much. At least, you know, they think I'm respectful and they think I'm mannered. I want to finish year 12 just so I have it on record, but at the same time it is. Yeah. Yeah, but in an opportunity came up on or before that. Mark, you know what? You get to. I'll get I get shot for saying this, but the quicker you leave school and get out there and do something, the better you are. Oh, I know. If you're ready. I think it's just a family decision though, because mum wants me to stay in school, dad wants me to drop out of school, Nana wants me to stay in school. Like it's just it's hey, you're right in your end. They've got you so far. Yeah. I'm not going to hit him. I'll go first. Yeah. You're a chance. Yeah, I say to people, your mum and dad and Nana's got you to this stage. Yeah. And never let anyone write your own book. You go write your own story now. Consider it of what they want you to do. What's he waiting for? Are they waiting for people in the green? Oh, we might be backed up, eh? It's alright, we'll get a good podcast then. We're moving along good anyway. Yeah, yeah. Great shot, mate. Yeah, so just remember your story. And I'm not saying that to take anything away from your grandma. I've got lots of mixed opinions about staying in school. But you've got to make sure if you're gonna like this kid's not going to school for the sake of not going to school. Yeah, exactly. And they don't do anything. What do you reckon you've got your eyes set on? On nothing at the moment? Um, well, hopefully either trade because I want to get some real work experience, some real life experience before I move into public life. Oh, come on. That's it. Yeah, no, I want to yeah, get into public life in the long term. But I've also been looking at the Australian Border Force and Darwin. That that uh that would be a good copper job. Yeah, no, I won't I don't want to be a cop. No, but no, but federal is that federal police, mate? No, it's um it's under its own branch. I think it's under Department of Primary Industry. That'd be a good job. That'd be right. Mounts off the hill. Yeah. That's very short, as I thought, but anyway. Yeah, no, I've yeah, I've always one of my mates, my brother's mates, actually, Stephen Casey is Nate Wilson. I was a kid, joined the border force. And uh what a job. I really like watching that on tally. I mean, because you're not gonna get Oh, I've seen it. I've actually watched it that much. You're not gonna get shot at. But you get mad Vietnamese fishing boat people, that's all you get at. Yeah, but I said you're well protected in there. Boy, exactly, yeah. You get the fine drugs and Well, I want to work on the marine time, like the maritime or tactical operations and when they raid boats and they go into the middle of the sea at night and find out who's sinking in. Like, that's what I want to do. I'd be like, You want to do that? Someone do it, dude. That'd be awesome. Is that what they do? That's what they do, yeah. Fed it's not federal police. No, no, no. They work with the federal police, but they aren't the federal police. Are you armed? They aren't, no. Are you armed? What? Would you be armed? Yeah, yeah, we are armed. What a job. What do you need to get into that? It's a bit late for me. Well, I'm currently completing a doubt there, yeah. Mate, you are having a round like no other round here. Um, is that probably where the worst are coming from, I suppose, huh? Darwin, I think Darwin, Sydney, Brisbane, and Gold Coast is the options. But I feel like Darwin, I think, oh actually, I know so. Darwin is the only place that offer uh offers a maritime patrol because it's New Guinea and all that region. Indonesia's close. Yeah, yeah. It gets all very rough up there.

But yeah, no, that'd be an awesome job to do. And I'm doing a cert for injustice at the moment at school. Law. And that's yeah, it's a type of law degree if you want to be in some sort of uh enforcement agency. It's a good idea. Do you like reading? Not really. It depends what I'm reading. And I'll tell you what, if young folks like Patrick Murdoch are coming through the ranks, maybe the future is gonna be alright after all. This kid's got perspective, respect, a bloody big heart, and something a lot of adults still struggle to find, self awareness. Perfect proof that your upbringing doesn't have to define your destination. You can come through at half time, fairly break down, confusion pressure, and still choose to become a good human being. And that's what today for me most of that. Not a golf, not a handicap, not a body captain, the character. The way he talks about his mom. Mike. I wanted to help younger kids feel like they belong.
