again, and the reason God gave us this book for us to study right now is because it's a pilgrimage. 00:00:33.439 --> 00:00:37.359 It's a pilgrimage book, just three chapters, really short. 00:00:37.520 --> 00:00:39.759 It's a pilgrimage to higher ground. 00:00:40.320 --> 00:00:52.320 It's a pilgrimage from loneliness and frustration and depression to worship and praise and exaltation. 00:00:53.280 --> 00:00:56.799 And we've been through the worst part, chapter one. 00:00:57.359 --> 00:01:09.040 And then last week there was a there was a change, there was a shift, both practically, experientially, in Habakkuk's life, but also theologically. 00:01:09.280 --> 00:01:10.400 He made this shift. 00:01:10.560 --> 00:01:11.760 He took a stand. 00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:23.120 And even though he didn't understand what God was up to with Judah, or what God was up to with the Babylonians that were coming, and they're gonna sack Jerusalem. 00:01:23.280 --> 00:01:25.359 They're gonna destroy Jerusalem. 00:01:25.599 --> 00:01:32.719 That's what the book of Daniel will come later, because Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, those for they were all taken. 00:01:33.280 --> 00:01:37.840 These noble young men from noble backgrounds were taken to Babylon. 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:39.439 That's why we have the book of Daniel. 00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:44.239 This is the same time period as Jeremiah, and Jeremiah is struggling. 00:01:45.760 --> 00:01:48.079 And yet, look at chapter 2, verse 1. 00:01:48.239 --> 00:01:50.319 We talked about this last week. 00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:58.319 There's this shift in the heart of Habakkuk after his dialogue with God. 00:01:58.879 --> 00:02:04.959 He says, I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, remember? 00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:15.599 The high place, and watch to see what you will say to me and what I will answer when I am corrected. 00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:21.919 So there's two things that are happening here is that Habakkuk doesn't understand what's going on. 00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:27.439 He doesn't understand the evil that God seems to not be judging or doing anything about. 00:02:28.400 --> 00:02:44.240 He doesn't understand how a good God, a kind God, a loving God could allow such an evil empire as Babylon to come and destroy the holy city. 00:02:44.639 --> 00:02:46.319 He's baffled by that. 00:02:46.400 --> 00:02:50.000 But he he finally just goes to probably a high tower. 00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:51.280 Remember, I talked about this last week. 00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:53.120 He probably went to a real high tower. 00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:57.199 He looked out, he said, I'm gonna watch for God to show up. 00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:01.360 And church, that's what we have to do a lot of times 00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:41.680 It's one of the great chapters of the Bible because in this pilgrimage, God's giving a prophetic vision. 00:04:41.839 --> 00:04:42.720 Write that down. 00:04:42.959 --> 00:04:54.800 God's giving a prophetic vision of a coming kingdom that's gonna crush all evil. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:05:06.399 There's a coming kingdom, church, that's gonna crush all evil and crown Jesus Lord all over the globe. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:09.920 There is a coming kingdom. 00:05:10.399 --> 00:05:13.759 He's not gonna bypass Babylon. 00:05:14.480 --> 00:05:17.519 He's not gonna bypass before that Persia. 00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:24.160 He's not gonna bypass these evil, authoritarian, totalitarian governments. 00:05:24.240 --> 00:05:25.839 They're gonna be dealt with. 00:05:26.639 --> 00:05:29.199 But he's also bringing his kingdom. 00:05:29.519 --> 00:05:35.199 It's not just judgment, it's mercy and judgment. 00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:40.800 Mercy triumphs over judgment. 00:05:41.680 00:07:16.879 It's found in verse 4. 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:24.079 The greatest, I would argue, the greatest verse in the entire Old and New Testament. 00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:26.959 It sums up everything. 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:40.079 Behold the proud, his soul is not upright in him, but the just shall live by his faith. 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:47.519 The Jewish Talmud states, quote, Moses gave Israel six hundred and thirteen commandments. 00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:50.000 David reduced them to ten. 00:07:50.639 --> 00:07:59.199 Isaiah to two, but Abakuch to one, the just shall live by faith. 00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:23.040 God is saying to Hakkuk, there is a coming work of the kingdom of God that's going to bring a revolution, and it will be based here that you walk and you live by faith, not by works, not by the law, but by the grace of God. 00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:28.079 For by grace, men and women, you've been saved through faith, not of yourself. 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:42.480 It is a gift of God, not as a result of works that no man should ever boast, or no church should ever boast, or so priests should ever boast, or some sacraments that we can boast about. 00:08:43.039 Luther before, because he's such an instrumental part of what we believe today. 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:37.759 But he was an Augustinian monk who, as he said of himself, if ever there was a monk in these confessions unless you really do some good sin. 00:10:05.600 --> 00:10:12.879 I mean, Brother Martin would come and say, I lusted after the potatoes of Brother John at lunch. 00:10:13.840 --> 00:10:20.240 Because you see, at that time in that system, it's called sacredotalism. 00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:22.000 I don't have time to go into that. 00:10:22.080 --> 00:10:26.559 I'm going to go into that in a couple weeks on Reformation Sunday. 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:37.200 But out of sacredalism, it was the idea that you were found righteous by doing the sacraments, the seven sacraments of what Augustine wrote in his commentary on Romans 1.17. 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:32.639 Here's what Romans 1.17 says. 00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:38.559 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. 00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:41.919 As it is written, the just shall live by faith. 00:11:42.080 --> 00:11:44.639 The direct quote of Habakkuk 2.4. 00:11:45.919 --> 00:11:50.639 The three great doctrinal books of the New Testament. 00:11:51.279 --> 00:12:00.399 Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews, quote Habakkuk 1.4, the just shall live by faith. 00:12:00.879 --> 00:12:06.000 As Luther would stop short, and he said, What does this mean? 00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:12.399 That there's this righteousness that is by faith, and from faith to faith? 00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:14.240 What does it mean? 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:17.200 That the righteous shall live by faith. 00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:40.960 And then the lights came on in Luther, and he began to understand that what Paul was speaking of here was a righteousness that God in his grace was making available to those who would receive it passively, not those who would achieve it actively. 00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:42.879 Let me say that again. 00:12:43.360 --> 00:12:56.799 You see, Luther began to understand that what Paul was saying is that there was a grace made available to those who receive it passively, not those who would achieve it actively. 00:12:57.440 --> 00:13:06.559 But that would be received by faith and by which a person would be reconciled to a holy and righteous God. 00:13:06.960 --> 00:13:08.399 Now listen alienum. 00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:20.960 That's Latin, for an alien righteousness. 00:13:21.360 --> 00:13:27.279 A righteousness of God freely given to us when we put our faith in Christ. 00:13:27.840 --> 00:13:37.360 Meaning that you will never have the righteousness you need to be saved, conjured up in your own spirit. 00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:43.919 You are, as Luther would later write, you have a bondage of the will. 00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:51.840 If you've never received Christ by faith, you'll never be good enough to get to heaven. 00:13:52.320 --> 00:14:02.000 No matter what sacraments that you give yourself to, how many times you go to a priest to confess your sins, you're still a sinner. 00:14:02.559 --> 00:14:05.279 He goes, Well, this is an alien righteousness. 00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:19.360 This is a righteousness that if I put my faith, if I put my trust in Christ, God's righteousness is bestowed upon me, I receive it, and now I am made righteous? 00:14:20.080 --> 00:14:23.360 Even when I'm not very righteous, the answer is yes. 00:14:23.759 --> 00:14:45.600 And so Luther, looking now at the Greek word that was in the New Testament, the word dikios, decaios, decaiosune, which didn't mean to make righteous, but rather to regard as righteous, to count as righteous, to declare as righteous. 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:58.639 And that was the awakening in Luther, and that was the spark that brought forth the Protestant Reformation that swept across Europe at that time. 00:14:59.840 --> 00:15:16.879 Luther said of that moment, quote, when I discovered that, I was born again of the Holy Spirit, and the door of paradise swung open, and I walked through it. 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:19.759 It changed the world. 00:15:20.080 --> 00:15:24.720 That verse, this verse that we're studying right, changed the world, men and women. 00:15:24.960 --> 00:15:40.399 We are here today because of Abacuc 2.4, Romans 1.17, Galatians 2, 8 and 9, for by grace you've been And when you're full of fear, fill of wonder, filled with concern about our country or about your life, maybe you need to post somewhere in your study or somewhere in your house. 00:17:19.200 --> 00:18:41.359 But there's this mystery, and it's like yeast that you take a little tiny bit of yeast and you put it in the dough, and it just looks like a regular lump of dough, just like a lump of 00:19:10.960 He was probably an Essene. 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:17.680 John the Baptist was probably an Essene in the living in the caves around the Dead Sea. 00:19:17.839 --> 00:19:23.279 We learned about the Essenes through the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls in 1948 and 49. 00:19:24.480 --> 00:19:33.519 These were a group of Jews who believed in this apocalyptic work that was gonna come through a Messiah that was gonna come in power, man. 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:42.559 Power that was gonna take over the government and free them from Rome and take over the globe through political, military power. 00:19:42.720 --> 00:19:56.559 And Jesus comes as a babe in an indescript town called Nazareth, living in Nazareth, born in Jerusalem and like a nobody, Bethlehem. 00:19:58.000 --> 00:20:02.559 And yet he came and he's doing his work. 00:20:02.799 --> 00:20:04.559 And so John is confused. 00:20:04.640 --> 00:20:08.240 He says, is this the Messiah who's going to come?
