Porn for War podcast. 00:00:26.640 --> 00:00:36.320 So, as you guys know, we've been going through the book of 1 Peter, and we've been learning about how Peter is speaking to the persecuted church. 00:00:36.399 --> 00:00:45.119 And he is encouraging them to stay strong, to live holy lives, to understand who they are, their identity in Christ. 00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:53.280 And as I was reading through the passage, passage or chapter 1 through 2, I realized that there was a recurring pattern. 00:00:53.520 --> 00:00:59.920 Today, we're primarily going to be in 1 Peter 2, verses 9 through 12, so you can go ahead and turn there. 00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:01.520 We'll be reading in just a moment. 00:01:01.679 --> 00:01:12.159 But reading through chapters 1 and 2, you see this reoccurring pattern where Peter is stating a fact about who we are, then he's giving us instructions. 00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:20.239 And this is our passage is the third time that this happens, but we also see this pattern in the book of Romans, chapter 4, 5, and 6. 00:01:20.480 --> 00:01:26.159 Repeatedly, Paul is saying, You are this, therefore do this. 00:01:26.480 --> 00:01:31.840 And the title of my sermon today is From Identity to Impact. 00:01:32.079 --> 00:01:33.760 From identity to impact. 00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:48.079 And together we're going to be looking at how our foundation has to be in our identity in Christ, how we must be fortified in holiness, and how by doing those two things we are poised for impact. 00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:53.840 So we're going to read the passage together first, and then we're going to break it down verse by verse. 00:01:54.079 --> 00:02:14.400 So 1 Peter chapter 2, verses 9 through 12 say, But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:18.479 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:23.120 Once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 00:02:23.360 --> 00:02:31.919 Beloved, I urge you, as sojourners and exiles, to abstain from the passions of the flesh that wage war against your soul. 00:02:32.159 --> 00:02:44.159 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as 00:02:49.680 How he states who we are. 00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:54.560 We are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a possession of God's. 00:02:54.800 --> 00:02:57.759 Now that we know that, live a holy our lives. 00:03:08.319 --> 00:03:21.280 In The Road Kids, we are learning, we're going through the entire Bible in one year, or actually four years, from cover to cover, chapter by chapter, verse by verse, and we are teaching the children the entire storyline of the Bible. 00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:26.000 We have this phrase that we say that helps kids kind of have an answer for what is the Bible. 00:03:26.159 --> 00:03:41.919 We say the Bible is 66 books of history, stories, letters, and poetry that fit together to tell one story: the story of how God loved or created the world, how sin entered the world, and how God made a way to rescue us. 00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:43.759 This is the grand story. 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:57.759 And right now in The Road Kids, we are teaching kids about how they are coming out of exile, how they were slaves in Egypt, and God is delivering them from Egypt, and they are coming into eventually into the promised land. 00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:03.599 And what's so profound about this story is that God is doing miraculous things. 00:04:03.840 --> 00:04:05.520 The Red Sea is parting. 00:04:05.680 --> 00:04:10.159 The nation of Egypt is literally destroyed, their entire army gone, destroyed in the Red Sea. 00:04:10.319 --> 00:04:22.319 God allows bread to fall from heaven, water is spilling from a rock, and eventually he gives them the law, which is giving them the instructions step by step of how to live a holy life. 00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:27.199 Eventually, God gives them kings, and some of them urging the people to turn to God. 00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:40.160 Eventually, God gives them judges and gives them prophets and gives them priests, all of which are urging the people to turn to God, turn away from your sin, love God because you are a holy nation. 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:47.519 But all along the way, as we read through the passages of Scripture, we see that they continually failed. 00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:54.879 They could never measure up to the standard of holiness that God had put on their lives because they were human. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:57.199 And it was never the full intention. 00:04:57.519 --> 00:04:59.600 God had a bigger plan. 00:04:59.759 --> 00:05:11.279 And that's the beauty of the gospel, that the Bible is one big story and ending with how God rescued us and set the church on a trajectory to change the world. 00:05:11.600 --> 00:05:15.040 Israel could not measure up to the law. 00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:26.319 And for us, if we put our holiness or our acts of service before our identity in Christ, it messes up everything else. 00:05:26.639 --> 00:05:33.279 Because our identity in Christ has to be the foundation of our holy life, of our impact. 00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:39.439 Ephesians 2, 8 through 9 says, For by grace you have been saved, been saved through faith. 00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:41.279 And this is not your own doing. 00:05:41.360 --> 00:05:46.319 It is a gift of God, not a result of works, so no one may boast. 00:05:46.639 --> 00:06:15.360 Titus 3, 4 through 7 says, But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of our works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy by the washing of regeneration and the renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by grace, we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:23.839 No matter how much good we do, no matter how much holiness we try to work up in ourselves, it's never going to be enough. 00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:25.920 Israel could never measure up. 00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:28.560 And that's why it wasn't the end of the story. 00:06:28.800 --> 00:06:44.240 Because of Jesus' unfailing love for us, He made a way for us to be holy, making that a free gift of God so that we can be anchored in our identity in Christ as holy 00:06:54.480 --> 00:07:06.720 And I believe that God has given me a vision for an elite generation, a generation of young people who are above average in their heart, mind, soul, and body so that they can make a massive impact in the world. 00:07:06.959 --> 00:07:18.720 And when I when I think about this and pray through this concept, I ask the Lord, how do we have these high-performing individuals without making them feel like they have these harsh taskmasters? 00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:21.680 You have to do this, you have to do this, you have to perform, you have to perform. 00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:27.839 And that is by anchoring them in their identity from us as parents. 00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:40.160 As parents, as caregivers, as teachers and educators, our children have to understand that they are loved by us regardless of their performance. 00:07:40.399 --> 00:07:50.959 Regardless of their choices, regardless of what they can bring to the household, the relationship, the classroom, they have to understand that we love them unconditionally. 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:53.360 Because this is what God has given us. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:08:05.839 Psychologists and people who study children know that this foundation of unconditional love is what is the launching pad for children to venture out, to make mistakes, to get back up, and to try again. 00:08:06.160 --> Attachment theory states that children, through the unconditional love and the responsiveness of parents and caregivers to their children, they are able to understand that they actually have value, I'm recently uh a dad, I have a 16-month-old, and early on in that relationship, there wasn't a lot that that child could give to me or her mother. 00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:45.759 All she could do was 00:08:54.480 Everything is crying, and sometimes and we were like, man, our baby is so needy. 00:08:54.559 --> 00:08:58.799 And I'm sure we're not the we're not the only person or parent that has said like won the lottery. 00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:18.000 I'm like, I'm so brilliant, my dad that was the trick that my dad used for some of his kids. 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:21.360 I have five siblings, so I was like, yeah, so my dad's got it together. 00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:23.840 And and so I tried that and I was like, oh, it works. 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.360 It was the worst thing ever. relationship, and yet we loved her and love her so very much. 00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:50.559 This unconditional love that God puts in our hearts, actually, because God loved us, we can actually love. 00:10:08.720 You know, just as children are forming that attachment to their caregivers early on, very, very early on in the relationship, we are forming that attachment through what God did for us. 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:19.840 The Bible says that while we were still sinners, while we could contribute nothing to the relationship, no holiness, no good works, the Bible says our holiness was like that translated into my relationship with God. 00:11:07.840 --> 00:11:17.279 I was trying so hard to be holy, I was trying so hard to be righteous, and as a child, a teen, and even into my young adulthood, I realized I could not perform. 00:11:17.519 --> 00:11:21.200 I could not do it, and it's led to self-doubt and self-loathing. 00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:28.000 I hated myself because I was like, I just want so bad to be in favor with God, but I can't earn it. 00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:29.120 I can't do it. 00:11:29.519 --> 00:11:38.799 And all along the way, God's saying, Yes, you can't, and Savior, you literally became a new person. 00:11:58.399 --> 00:11:59.519 The old is gone. 00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:03.840 I think of it almost like, you know, the snake like loses its skin. life, maybe the bully or the coworker, or even maybe a family member who wants to tear us down and break us down and say these statements over us, they can fall off like water off a duck's back. this, and when they are being called something or being put down by someone, they're able to remember what the Bible says about them, what Jesus says about them. 00:13:00.799 --> 00:13:03.039 And I'd as parents and caregivers, we have to be extremely intentional about what identity statements we are speaking over our children. 00:14:59.600 --> 00:15:04.000 Are we saying you are stupid or you're determining how you're responding emotionally to that situation, which is then changing the way you're thinking, which is then changing the way that you're acting. 00:16:27.440 --> 00:16:31.679 And we and you're playing the pickup game of football or soccer or something like that, and then two captains are selected, usually by stature or by age, and then they do rock, paper, scissors, and they're gonna choose the people for their team. 00:17:31.440 --> 00:17:38.160 Everyone else has to line up on the on the line and or on the fence and just wait to be chosen. 00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:40.319 Ooh, so scary. 00:17:40.720 --> 00:17:48.640 Maybe not for anyone else, but for me, it was very scary because I wasn't super great at sports, and frequently I'd be the last person chosen. 00:17:48.799 --> relate to a lot. 00:18:02.960 --> 00:18:07.359 But but it was a very, you know, we we all want to be chosen. 00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:09.119 We all long to be chosen. 00:18:09.200 --> 00:18:15.680 And maybe it's not for the pickup game in your backyard, maybe it's for the promotion, maybe it's for that job that you applied for. 00:18:15.839 --> 00:18:23.279 When you're chosen, you feel like you are recognized and appreciated for your talents, your giftings, and your ability to contribute. 00:18:23.519 --> 00:18:29.440 And when we're not chosen, we feel this sense of loneliness or a lack of belonging. 00:18:29.519 --> 00:18:35.200 And that's because the need for belonging is psychologically written into our DNA. 00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:46.079 That we have this deep need to feel like we are a part of something bigger than ourselves, a peer group or a church or a congregation or whatever it may be. 00:18:46.319 --> 00:18:58.640 And that's because God put that, he wrote that code in our DNA because he was writing a love letter to us saying, Hey, I am calling you, I am choosing you to be my sons and daughters. 00:18:58.799 --> 00:19:01.200 I want you to be a part of my family. 00:19:01.680 --> 00:19:05.119 When we have that sense of belonging, it's very healthy. 00:19:05.200 --> 00:19:09.759 And when we don't have that, it leads to a lot of mental health issues. 00:19:09.920 --> 00:19:20.559 Uh the Mayo Clinic says that social ties that accompany a sense of belonging are a protective factor helping manage stress and other behavioral issues. 00:19:20.720 --> 00:19:29.440 When we feel we have support and are not alone, we are more resilient, often coping more effectively with difficult times in our lives. 00:19:29.680 --> 00:19:35.599 Coping with the hardship decreases the physical and mental effects of these situations. 00:19:36.079 --> 00:19:46.160 But on the other hand, depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies are a common mental health condition associated with lacking a sense of belonging. 00:19:46.319 --> 00:19:57.519 These conditions can lead to social behaviors that interfere with a person's ability to connect to others, creating a cycle of events further weakening our sense of belonging. 00:19:57.759 --> 00:20:05.200 It creates this nonstop cycle of us feeling disconnected, therefore we recluse more and we feel more the beginning, but I want you to be on my team because I have a calling and a purpose for you that's gonna blow your mind. 00:20:27.440 --> 00:20:30.640 You're gonna perform on this team better than are also now shoulder to shoulder with brothers and sisters in the family of Christ that you have a connection with, that you have a shared vision and purpose with. 00:21:09.680 --> 00:21:17.759 You know, we don't have to have the same sports preferences or the same leisurely activity preferences to connect, to be a part of one family. 00:21:17.920 --> 00:21:23.839 We just need the Holy Spirit, performing perfectly, but because God in his great mercy says, I am giving you salvation through the blood and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and now you will wear his righteousness as your own. 00:29:38.240 --> 00:29:50.160 We have to be in warrior mode because God is setting us up to impact the world, but sin, which wages war against our soul, is actually stunting our potential.
