going to read the whole passage and then we'll break it down from there. 00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:24.239 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit, in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart. 00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:34.239 Having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible through the word of God, which lives and abides forever. 00:01:34.400 --> 00:01:50.159 Because, verse 24, all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass, the grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the Lord endures forever. 00:01:50.400 --> 00:01:54.959 Now, this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you. 00:01:55.200 --> 00:01:56.400 Now, chapter 2. 00:01:56.640 --> 00:02:18.479 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desiring the pure milk of the word that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious. 00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:24.080 Now, word is mentioned one, two, three, four times. 00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:30.879 And so I want to talk about this idea of the word in our hearts, this word in our life. 00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:35.599 And I want to say that the word of God has activating power. 00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:39.360 The word of God has activating power in our life. 00:02:39.520 --> 00:02:43.759 Now there's two aspects of word here. 00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:58.319 The first is how we are born again, how we become a new creation in Christ, because the scriptures tell us, John tells us, that the word became flesh and dwelt among us, speaking of Jesus. 00:02:58.560 --> 00:03:05.680 So when you give your heart to Christ, when you surrender to him, the Word, the Spirit comes to live within you. 00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:08.400 So that's another, that's one aspect of the Word. 00:03:08.479 --> 00:03:15.120 The Word begins to be activated in your life because the Holy Spirit has come to live in you, and you're a new creation in Christ. 00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:22.000 But there's another aspect of the Word of God that is in this passage, and that is that part of a newborn babe. 00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:23.680 It was chapter 2, verse 2. 00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:24.960 Look at chapter 2, verse 2 again. 00:03:25.039 --> 00:03:33.199 It says, like a newborn babe, longing for or nursing upon the mother's breast, there's this longing for the word. 00:03:33.599 --> 00:03:44.240 So there is a word that gets implanted through the Spirit, but then there's also the Word as it grows, which is the Word of God, which would be the Scriptures, the Bible. 00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:45.840 The Bible's living and active. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:53.360 Hebrews 4.12 says the Bible, the Word of God, is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword. 00:03:53.439 --> 00:04:07.360 So that means the Word is not just a book, it's actually a living seed in our lives that, if connected with good soil, begins to grow. 00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:20.879 So what's interesting about our passage is that the first part, the first few verses that I read, we're talking about a sincere love, having a sincerity of love in our life. 00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:27.120 But then if you go to chapter 2 again and you look at verse 1, it talks about hypocrisy. 00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:33.920 So on the one hand, he's saying, look, there's this seed that gets planted. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:53.839 It's called the incorruptible seed that's planted in your heart, that then begins to be nurtured into sincerity of love, that then begins to work in our life, that I think in 2-1, what he's saying is that it begins to drive out hypocrisy in our life. 00:04:54.000 --> 00:05:03.839 In other words, that's the nature of the work of the Spirit in our lives is that men and women, you're becoming a real human. 00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:06.480 You've heard the term humanism. 00:05:06.560 --> 00:05:08.160 Guess where humanism came from? 00:05:08.480 --> 00:05:13.839 Humanism was developed during the Enlightenment by believers. 00:05:14.399 --> 00:05:19.759 The idea of us being truly human is the essence of humanism. 00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:31.199 Now, the way humanism is being defined today is entirely different than not only the etymology of the word, but also the history of the study. 00:05:31.920 --> 00:05:45.839 But here's the reality: that the more we grow in Christ, the creator of the universe, through the seed that's been planted in us when we believe, the more human you become. 00:05:46.160 --> 00:05:51.920 You become the essence of what you were created in the beginning to be. 00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:57.120 When we're not following Christ, we're actually not as be who you are. 00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:43.600 Your DNA has a destiny that God put within you, and the more you line up with the one who gave you your DNA, the more you discover the created person that flesh on the one hand, but also the written word that as we spend time in God's word, we grow and become the people that God's called us to be. 00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:02.959 Now we're a new creation surrender to Christ, there's this new work of the Spirit within us. 00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:31.360 And what happens in many Christian circles is we try to reform ourselves. 00:07:31.439 --> 00:07:38.720 We're trying to change ourselves, and it's kind of an outward-in discipline that is futile. 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:40.560 You can't change you. 00:07:40.879 --> 00:07:51.439 But it's more as we surrender to Him that He does his work within us, and as He works inside out within us, we see the new creation for which we were created. 00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:52.399 So C.S. 00:07:52.480 --> 00:08:03.360 Lewis, the great Oxford Cambridge professor and writer, said this: God became man to turn creatures into sons. 00:08:04.160 --> 00:08:11.519 Not simply to produce better men of the old kind, but to produce a new kind of man or a new kind of woman. 00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:21.120 It is not like teaching a horse to jump better and better, but it's more like turning a horse into a winged creature. 00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:41.519 So, in other words, what God's Spirit does through the seed of the Word is he comes to work within us in our natural existence, and he begins a supernatural work within our natural existence by which new desires and new passions are birthed within us. 00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:51.600 And that new birth activity of God is what begins to set us free from those areas we were in bondage to before. 00:08:51.919 --> 00:09:04.159 So, a number of months ago, I was in a conversation with a young man, and he was sharing with me his background in both Gnosticism and 00:09:15.279 Stoicism, S-T-O-I-C-I-S-M, or Gnosticism. 00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:16.799 He had been involved in both. 00:09:16.960 --> 00:09:25.120 And we began the discovery of how he got saved, how he came into this new experience with Christ. 00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:27.759 And he said this was the essence of it. 00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:40.639 The essence of it was that in Stoicism, as well as in Gnosticism, it was about me attempting to discipline my life better and better to be a better person, which by the way is a good thing. 00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:46.799 I'd rather for you to be disciplining yourself to be a better person than not disciplining yourself and being a crummy person. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:48.720 So I think it's great to do that. 00:09:49.039 --> 00:09:54.639 But in the end, he saw the vanity and the futility of that. 00:09:54.879 --> 00:10:01.519 And when he came to Christ, it really resonated with him that Christ does the work. 00:10:02.799 --> 00:10:08.320 And what Peter's saying here is there was a seed planted when you believed. 00:10:08.559 --> 00:10:13.039 This incorruptible seed that's now growing within us. 00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:25.759 And so in but by the grace of God you've been saved, and raised us up together and made us sit together with him in heavenly places in Christ. 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:41.679 And so this is a work of God, though being a pastor. 00:13:53.440 --> 00:14:03.679 There's a veneer, there's an outward veneer of spirituality that comes with that, and you just embrace it when you're a kid, and you just think that's we're not, that's not really who we are, but we begin to become pretenders, hypocrite, hipocritos means actor, a poser, a faker. 00:14:47.519 --> 00:14:56.320 And what Peter's saying is the purpose of you're sitting next to. 00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:16.559 So you have gifts and talents, and you have a DNA and a genetic code given supernaturally by God that gives you the mind you have, the heart you school and realizing when I heard the N-word and things like that, I'd never heard that before. 00:16:49.519 --> 00:16:51.519 And I just remember being shocked. 00:16:51.919 --> 00:16:55.759 And I remember thinking to myself, I think that's derogatory. 00:16:56.960 --> 00:17:00.559 But I had to go home to mom and say, Mom, is that seventh grade? 00:17:00.639 --> 00:17:02.960 I said, What does And then, here's the part that really makes it fun is the deeper your convictions about something, the harder it is to love those who don't have your convictions. 00:17:45.839 --> 00:17:49.119 So you say, well, maybe I shouldn't have such deep convictions. 00:17:49.279 --> 00:17:50.240 I'm not saying that. 00:17:50.400 --> 00:18:00.079 I say let your convictions grow deep, but then allow the word
