there was there was a river coming out of the ground over on the center part of my property, and it was it was ripping, man. 00:01:17.840 --> 00:01:23.120 It was like a fast-moving stream going from the west to the east. 00:01:23.359 --> 00:01:37.599 And then I noticed right then that there was also a river just as big, about this wide, just flowing, that green, blue, crystal clear water from the then there was a door, and it was a jail house door, and uh and it looked really spooky down there, and I remember thinking like there's I remember thinking in my mind like there's goblins in there. sense, I teach like you're in a sort of a fundamentalist Baptist church in the sense that I go chapter by chapter, verse by verse, because I love God's word so much, but we're also open to spirit, and gonna be having the worship conference, one of the goals that I had in Florida, besides helping my daughter and her husband, was to take time to really get an ide get at least the basic ideas of the message I was supposed to give at the worship conference we just had the last three days. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:43.759 And I knew immediately from that dream what I was supposed to speak on. 00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:51.040 And that's what I'm gonna speak to you guys about, because I spoke at the worship conference and I was lazy and I didn't want to do two messages for the weekend. 00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:52.240 No, that's not true. 00:06:52.319 --> 00:07:01.279 I really felt strongly that what I shared on Friday afternoon I needed to share with you guys to the broader church because I haven't spoken on this before. 00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:04.000 So I wanna call this being a true worshiper. 00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:10.639 So that's the title of what we're gonna leave Romans for a couple weeks here, because next week's Mother's Day, but uh, then we'll get back to Romans. 00:07:10.720 --> 00:07:12.720 But true, the true worshiper. 00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:15.360 Now, here's what's interesting about the passage we're gonna look at. 00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:21.920 It's the only place in the New Testament where Jesus literally defines what worship is. 00:07:22.160 --> 00:07:30.160 I mean, I remember growing up in the 80s as a new believer, I didn't know it, but there were worship wars going on. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:48.959 You know, there were the hymn singing churches, there were the contemporary churches, there were the antiphonal reading churches and liturgical churches and high church churches, and then there was the low church churches where it was guitars and banjos and piano and stuff, and everybody's battling over it. 00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:54.720 Praise God, most of that's gone now, and we've kind of we've kind of synthesized our worship. 00:07:54.800 --> 00:07:56.000 But here's what's interesting. 00:07:56.240 --> 00:08:07.680 When Jesus talks about worship, he never talks about singing, he never talks about style, and he never talks about performance. 00:08:08.480 --> 00:08:13.199 Jesus is something is interested in something much deeper than that. 00:08:13.360 --> 00:08:20.639 And what's interesting is the lead up to what he's gonna say about true worship is this bizarre woman. 00:08:20.959 --> 00:08:27.759 This bizarre woman who is the, I argue, the first evangelist in the New Testament. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:37.039 And I have spoken at Jacob's well to uh a tour group that I led in 2008 to Israel on this passage. 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:46.240 So turn in your Bibles to John chapter 4, and I'm just gonna warn you, you're gonna need to take notes because I got a lot of points. 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:49.759 So I thought in the first service, oh, okay, this is gonna be a part one and a part two. 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:50.480 But I did it. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:52.000 I did it in 35 minutes. 00:08:52.159 --> 00:08:56.639 So I want you to write at the title, I want you to write eight observations of true worship. 00:08:56.879 --> 00:08:58.639 Eight observations of true worship. 00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:06.879 Another way you could define it, if you were to give it two different definitions, you could say true worship leading to revival. 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:10.720 True worship that leads to revival, because that's what happens in this story. 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:14.080 So let's look at John 4, verse 5. 00:09:14.320 --> 00:09:23.679 He came to a city of Samaria, which is called Sikar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:26.159 Now Jacob's well was there. 00:09:26.480 --> 00:09:30.879 Jesus therefore, being wearied from his journey, sat thus by the well. 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:33.440 It was about the sixth hour. 00:09:34.159 --> 00:09:36.559 A woman of Samaria, circle that. 00:09:36.639 --> 00:09:41.120 If you've got a pen and you've got a physical Bible in front of you, I want you to circle. 00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:44.799 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. 00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:47.360 Jesus said to her, give me a drink. 00:09:47.519 --> 00:09:50.080 Underline that, give me a drink. 00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:53.279 For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food. 00:09:53.360 --> 00:09:54.320 Here's the first point. 00:09:54.559 --> 00:09:57.759 The first point is that Jesus is thirsty. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:01.759 Number one, Jesus is thirsty. 00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:04.639 He engages this woman from Samaria. 00:10:04.960 --> 00:10:06.480 Now, here's who the Samaritans were. 00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:18.559 The Samaritans were these half-breed Jews that had settled in around 721 BC when the Assyrians came over and took the northern kingdom. 00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:20.799 Some of the Jews did not leave. 00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:29.279 They did not escape, and they intermarried with the Samarians or the Assyrians, and they became known as Samaritans. 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:43.279 Now, what makes them a problem for Israel as a whole was that they developed their own Bible, their own separate Bible, and their own separate temple as a place of worship. 00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:51.679 So, so for Jesus, first of all, to engage with this woman is a problem, and then to engage with a Samaritan woman is a double problem. 00:10:51.840 --> 00:10:54.879 But here's the deal: He says, Give me a drink. 00:10:55.200 --> 00:10:56.559 And why is that important? 00:10:56.799 --> 00:10:58.080 It's important on two fronts. 00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:05.919 First front is this that Jesus initiates with us in the arena of worship. 00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:07.600 He initiates with us. 00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:10.720 So he said to her, she didn't say anything to him. 00:11:10.879 --> 00:11:14.240 He initiates with her and he says, Give me a drink. 00:11:14.399 --> 00:11:20.799 Every time you come to the road to our services, the Lord would say, Are you ready to engage in worship? 00:11:21.279 --> 00:11:23.519 I'm initiating with you to come. 00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:26.639 And you initiated with him by coming. 00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:39.679 I mean, you came here on your way from your home, arguing with your spouse the whole time, which is a national tradition, and then you came in, you got coffee, you got a little bit calmed down, and now you have to listen to this guy from Georgia. 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:40.320 Okay. 00:11:40.720 --> 00:11:41.360 Now listen. 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:42.240 Listen what he said. 00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:44.720 He says, give me a drink. 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:45.679 I'm thirsty. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:50.639 He's telling her that she has to do something. 00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:53.120 Church, you have to do something. 00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:58.480 You have to determine that you're gonna give Jesus a drink offering. 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:03.519 He's thirsty for your worship, he's thirsty for interaction. 00:12:03.600 --> 00:12:05.039 And this is the main point. 00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:11.120 The main point here is that Jesus is initiating a relationship with her. 00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:12.720 That's the point of worship. 00:12:12.799 --> 00:12:13.919 Let me give you a definition of worship. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:16.240 Here's what I think the definition of worship is for Steve Hall. 00:12:16.480 --> 00:12:21.840 I think the Bible teaches that the definition of worship is focusing on Jesus. 00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:27.039 It has nothing to do with the songs you sing, it has nothing to do with how great your voice is. 00:12:27.279 --> 00:12:34.960 It has nothing to do with whether you like traditional hymns or contemporary worship, it has nothing to do with style, it has everything to do with focusing on Jesus. 00:12:35.039 --> 00:12:38.559 And the reason that's important is because you can focus on Jesus at work. 00:12:38.720 --> 00:12:41.360 You can focus on Jesus in your relationship with your spouse. 00:12:41.519 --> doesn't care about your gender. 00:13:42.960 --> 00:13:44.879 He doesn't care about your brokenness. 00:13:45.120 --> 00:13:46.799 He doesn't care about your religion. 00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:48.240 Couldn't care less. 00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:50.639 He cares about your heart. 00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:58.480 And it's interesting, nowhere in scripture does Jesus ever engage a Pharisee or a Sadducee this way. 00:13:58.720 --> 00:14:01.919 He engages a Samaritan woman. 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:04.159 He breaks cultural barriers. 00:14:04.399 --> 00:14:09.200 He breaks religious barriers to get to her heart, and that's what the Lord wants. 00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:10.159 He wants your heart. 00:14:10.320 --> 00:14:17.679 He wants a relationship with you by you allowing him to come in with his
