00:01:26.480 I want to talk about humility. 00:01:26.640 --> 00:01:29.040 And I'm calling it the cardinal virtue. 00:01:29.120 --> 00:01:36.239 I believe that it is from humility that all other character virtues flow. 00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:44.319 Humility is the soil by which grace grows in our lives. 00:01:44.719 --> 00:01:48.799 Humility comes from grace, and grace comes from humility. Andrew Murray is a great resource for you. 00:02:20.960 --> 00:02:33.039 So last week we talked about this cardinal virtue of humility, and I shared last week what I thought were the three key components to understanding humility, and I want to go over that again. 00:02:33.280 --> 00:02:38.400 And the first quality of humility is Jesus. 00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:48.560 Because the reason I think that's important, the reason I started with that is because there's a lot of caricatures of what humility is that's way off track. 00:02:49.120 --> 00:02:52.479 It's almost like, you know, humility is Mr. 00:02:52.560 --> 00:02:53.599 Bean or something. 00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:57.520 And I just want to break that and say, Jesus is humility. 00:02:57.680 --> 00:03:07.599 And we see in Jesus not only beautiful love, but we see a fierce boldness, a fierce boldness of faith in him. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:20.800 I mean, this is the guy who took the cords in the temple, and he just ripped through that, and he was angry about what had been done in the temple of the Lord, the house of the Lord. 00:03:20.879 --> 00:03:28.240 And he cried out, This house is not a house of merchandise and commerce. 00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:31.039 This is a house of prayer for the nations. 00:03:31.280 --> 00:03:36.960 And that's why we believe so strongly at the road in prayer, because Jesus modeled it to us. 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:38.719 That's humility too. 00:03:38.960 --> 00:03:42.000 Humility is bold, it's assertive. 00:03:42.560 --> 00:03:44.960 And so Jesus is our example. 00:03:45.280 --> 00:03:50.240 Peter said, God gives grace to the humble. 00:03:50.639 --> 00:03:54.240 And Jesus, in his humility, needed more grace. 00:03:54.400 --> 00:03:57.520 We're going to talk about that a lot here this morning. 00:03:58.719 --> 00:04:01.039 So he says, Come to me. 00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:02.560 Let's look at it again. 00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:04.319 Let's read it together. 00:04:04.639 --> 00:04:06.479 Verses 28 through 30. 00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:10.800 Come to me, all of you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:18.720 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you'll find rest for your souls. 00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:21.759 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. 00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:26.399 So Jesus is our prime example of humility. 00:04:26.560 --> 00:04:27.920 He says, Come to me. 00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:32.240 Take my yoke and learn from me. 00:04:32.560 --> 00:04:33.759 Learn from me. 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:40.319 So first, Jesus is our definition of a human being who is humble. 00:04:40.879 --> 00:04:46.319 Secondly, true humility is entire dependence on God. 00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:48.639 Entire dependence on God. 00:04:48.720 --> 00:04:50.879 It's the soil that grace grows from. 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:55.360 Jesus was entirely dependent on his Father. 00:04:55.519 --> 00:05:00.000 And that's where we're going to camp in a moment in this message this morning. 00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:02.959 Thirdly, true humility is death to self. 00:05:03.279 --> heart, in my marriage, in my family, in our city, in our state, and across the nation and all over the world? 00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:39.920 Well, I want to talk about the Gospel of John here this morning. 00:06:40.240 --> 00:06:53.839 Because what's unique about the Gospel of John is how many times Jesus speaks of his entire dependence on the Father and even his denial of himself. 00:06:54.399 --> 00:06:59.920 He's modeling to us what it means to live a humble lifestyle. 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:02.160 I call it humility and action. 00:07:02.399 --> 00:07:03.519 You might want to write that to John chapter 5. 00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:23.839 So turn in your Bibles to John chapter 5, and we're going to go through these. 00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:29.839 And here's what I ask you to do is make a check mark or underline these verses. 00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:47.759 Now I'm going to move pretty quickly through here, but I want you to take note of these passages as it relates to our understanding of what it means to live a humble life, to be totally dependent on God, to be subservient and submitted completely to God in our lives. 00:07:47.839 --> 00:07:49.360 And there's some key words here. 00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:52.000 One key word is not, NOT. 00:07:53.199 --> 00:07:53.839 Not. 00:07:54.879 --> 00:07:55.920 And nothing. 00:07:56.160 --> 00:07:57.519 Not and nothing. 00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:07.360 Jesus is going to use not and nothing a lot in his lifestyle of walking with the Father. 00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:19.279 Now, church, it's amazing to me that we get caught up, and we should get caught up in the redemption of Christ from the perspective of the cross. 00:08:19.439 --> 00:08:20.240 That's beautiful. 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:21.040 It's wonderful. 00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:25.600 But remember, it's the life, death, and resurrection of Christ that saves us. 00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:27.839 So it's the life of Christ. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:40.879 Jesus could have come and on the first day, you know, he's one year old, or when he's 31 years old, and just gone to the cross and died in his blood would have healed us of all of our sin. 00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:42.480 But see, that's not the point. 00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:47.519 The point isn't just salvation, it's also about sanctification. 00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:56.960 And it's also about a lifestyle of learning to have eternal life, the fullness of life flowing through us every day. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:08:59.679 By us becoming like Christ. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.480 For Christ flowing through us into the lives of others. 00:09:04.879 --> 00:09:14.480 And so Jesus here in John gives us a glimpse into what it looks like to walk with Christ every day. 00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:17.279 So look at John 5, verse 17. 00:09:17.440 --> 00:09:19.440 John 5, verse 17. 00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:27.919 But Jesus answered them, My Father has been working until now, and now I've been working. 00:09:28.799 --> 00:09:34.159 So Jesus is saying, I'm working because the Father has been working. 00:09:34.799 --> 00:09:36.080 Verse 19. 00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:48.159 Then Jesus answered and said to them, Most assuredly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself but what he sees the Father doing. 00:09:48.799 --> 00:09:55.200 For whatever the Father does, the Son also does in like manner. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:59.679 This is why in Jesus' ministry, sometimes he healed everybody. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:01.759 In other cases, he heals one guy. 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:03.360 I mean, he goes to the pool of Salaam. 00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:05.360 He heals one guy there. 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:11.759 We know that historically that that pool had hundreds of people. 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:12.960 I've been there. 00:10:13.200 --> 00:10:14.879 And you that are going to Israel with me. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:15.519 We're going to be there. 00:10:15.600 --> 00:10:16.879 We're going to go to the pool of Salaam. 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:22.480 And there'd be hundreds of crippled people, sick people around the pool of Salaam. 00:10:22.559 --> 00:10:26.240 And yet Jesus came to one guy and healed him. 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:27.440 Now, why did he do that? 00:10:27.519 --> 00:10:29.120 Why did he skip all the others? 00:10:29.360 --> 00:10:31.679 Because that's what he saw the Father doing. 00:10:32.559 --> 00:10:40.320 Talk about total surrender, total submission, and total dependence and complete humility to God. 00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:43.440 Jesus could only do what he saw the Father doing. 00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:44.720 Verse 20. 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:50.639 For the Father loves the Son, and he shows him all things that he himself does. 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:55.840 And he will show him greater works than these that you may marvel. 00:10:56.320 --> 00:11:03.200 So Jesus is saying again, he can only do what he sees the Father doing, and God revealing to him because he loves him. 00:11:04.159 --> 00:11:05.519 Verse 26. 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:15.679 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:24.000 And he has given him, meaning Christ, authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of Man. 00:11:24.320 --> 00:11:25.919 Amazing verse. 00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:35.919 Jesus is saying that the life that the Father has has been given to the submitted Son. 00:11:36.240 --> 00:11:40.639 He only has life in himself because the Father gives it to him. 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:43.039 Verse 30. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:45.360 This is beautiful. 00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:47.360 Probably ought to underline this one. 00:11:47.679 --> 00:11:49.759 I can of myself do nothing. 00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:51.039 This is Jesus speaking. 00:11:51.360 --> 00:11:54.559 I can of myself do nothing. 00:11:55.200 --> 00:11:57.440 As I hear, I judge. 00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:06.720 And my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me. 00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:17.120 Even Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man, in a mysterious way, fully God, fully man, did not have a will of his own. 00:12:17.440 --> 00:12:20.080 He was submitted to the Father's will. 00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:23.600 And the only will that the Son had is what the Father had. I don't, you don't have what it takes. 00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:56.639 You say, that's right, I don't have what it takes. 00:12:57.440 --> 00:12:58.879 Man, you're driving me crazy. 00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:02.240 And you should, your answer should be, I'm driving myself crazy. 00:13:03.279 --> 00:13:11.840 Because true humility is realizing that we don't have what it takes, and we're not smart sent me is true, whom you do not know. 00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:35.679 But I know him, for I am from him, and he sent me. 00:16:36.639 --> 00:16:43.440 So he's even saying to the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the scribes in the temple, you don't know God the Father. 00:16:44.559 --> 00:16:57.440 If you don't recognize who I am as the Messiah, and this is before he's gone to the cross, this is before the resurrection, if you can't recognize the Father through what I'm doing, through my works, you don't even know the Father. 00:16:57.600 --> 00:17:02.320 I mean, that's that's like blasphemy
