00:01:08.799 --> 00:01:36.480 Hey, I want to um talk about the beauty of the Lord today, and um my wife's been watching me prepare and research this for weeks and weeks and months, and it's been personally uh a powerful time, but I feel like there's so much to say, and there's such a dinky time to say it in this time together that it's not gonna do it justice at all. 00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:52.159 But but it's really been moving in my heart because, first of all, um I think since about seventh grade, sixth and seventh grade as a kid, we we moved out to a cabin out in the uh on my grandfather's ranch. 00:01:52.319 --> 00:02:05.280 My dad was going back to graduate school, and I had just been a city kid, um suburban kid, grew up in Atlanta and Huntsville, Alabama, and then we came there and I'd never been in the country. 00:02:05.439 --> 00:02:18.159 And suddenly I had time, and we were around all these ponds and marshland, and I just fell in love with being outside and and being outdoors. 00:02:18.560 --> 00:02:25.599 And as I've grown in my relationship with God, my love for the outdoors has only grown deeper. 00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:31.439 I I'm honored and blessed tables with the cross and the candles speaks of the beauty of God. 00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:17.839 So turning your Bibles to Psalm 27:4, let's see what the theologian of the beauty of God has to say to us. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:28.959 Really, David is the first, first leader in the Bible, first prophet in the Bible to talk about the beauty of God. 00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:38.959 And he brought a the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? 00:05:55.199 --> 00:06:01.920 When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. 00:06:02.879 --> 00:06:10.720 Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear, though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident. 00:06:10.879 --> 00:06:12.240 So here's the context. 00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:17.040 He's full of temptations toward fear. 00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:19.439 He's had armies against him. 00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:21.279 You know, we know the story of David. 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:27.439 He's had he's had huge enemies up against him at times in his life. 00:06:27.519 --> 00:06:31.600 And it could be, because we don't know exactly, that could be exactly the context here. 00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:43.759 And yet here's what he, I mean, if I was him, and I'm a warrior king, I'd be thinking about this one thing that I need, Lord, right now is a refuge. 00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:51.439 This one thing I write now, I need a strategy for fighting the enemy and enabling the kingdom of God to go forward on the face of the earth. 00:06:51.600 --> 00:06:56.399 Here's what he says in verse 4 in that context. 00:06:56.720 --> 00:07:00.720 One thing, underline that, highlight that, circle that. 00:07:00.800 --> 00:07:04.000 Mine circled in my Bible because I still have one of these kind of Bibles you write in. 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:05.360 It looks like this. 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:17.839 One thing I have desired of the Lord that I will seek, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:20.959 What a strange worldview. 00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:30.639 In the midst of this kind of trouble, he wants to behold the beauty of the Lord all the days of his life. 00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:37.600 David is enraptured by God's beauty. 00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:40.079 And here's what I think he's saying. 00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:53.360 He's saying, when I behold the beauty of the Lord, when I see his beauty, when I cultivate beauty in my heart toward the Lord, all my worries go away. 00:07:53.759 --> 00:07:56.160 All my fears are taken care of. 00:07:56.480 --> 00:08:02.879 Men and women, how many of you would say you've had some fears this week? 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:03.759 Ah. fears, worries, and stress, he's gonna go into the sanctuary of the Lord, he's gonna behold the beauty of the Lord, and that's gonna take care of all those issues. 00:08:23.279 --> 00:08:27.439 There's something about that we've got to cultivate. 00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:36.960 And I don't know that I get it all right now, but I want to commit myself to understanding that I want to I want to 00:09:25.679 And we've been in the book of Philippians, and I can't think of a better um synchronization of joy in our hearts than beholding the beauty of the Lord. 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:28.240 And we're we're gonna see that later on in this Psalm. 00:09:28.320 --> 00:09:33.919 That David experiences joy by beholding beauty with his enemies all around him. 00:09:34.159 --> 00:09:35.759 Can you imagine that? 00:09:36.240 --> 00:10:04.559 That the debtors are coming, that they're calling the loan, that the company's in trouble, that your marriage is in trouble, that your kids are going wayward, that your finances are not where they should be, and you're not sure about what to do to cultivate in the midst of that, surrounded by all that stress, to cultivate a worship of the beauty of God. 00:10:04.720 --> 00:10:07.039 Now that's radical stuff, folks. 00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:08.960 People don't do that. 00:10:11.200 --> 00:10:21.200 American Christianity is figure it out, figure it out, figure it out, and I'm not saying anything's wrong with that, if that's part of it. 00:10:21.440 --> 00:10:27.840 But if that's the only thing we do, we're gonna be stressed out. 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:41.840 And from what I'm seeing and all the stats on pharmaceuticals, what I'm seeing about all the stats with counselors, what I'm seeing with all the stats as it relates to therapy, we are choosing stressed out. 00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:46.080 David's choosing beholding the beauty of the Lord. 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:49.840 Surrounded by all his enemies, I'm gonna behold the beauty of the possible? 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:15.840 Is it possible that we might change our worldview, even as young people, even as adults, that we might become a people that is learning and growing and how to the beauty of God for contemporary science. 00:11:25.759 --> 00:11:30.559 Their definition is the first trait of beauty is elegant simplicity. 00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:31.600 Isn't that interesting? 00:11:32.399 --> 00:11:34.799 Elegant simplicity. 00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:40.720 As in, in the stuff I was reading, as in Einstein's theory of gravitation. 00:11:41.200 --> 00:11:45.840 So simplicity is the key to beauty in science. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:57.759 In philosophy, centuries have taught that beauty is unity, harmony, symmetry, wholeness, and radiance. 00:11:58.720 --> 00:12:10.879 Theologian Wayne Grudom defines the beauty of God as that attribute of God whereby he is the sum of all desirable qualities. 00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:21.600 Other words for beauty would be wonder, mystery, splendor, humility, delight, thrill, excitement. 00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:27.279 So I got to go fly fishing twice this week. 00:12:27.679 --> 00:12:29.360 That never happens. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:43.679 And I took Josh one day, I took Samuel the other day, and both of them had never seriously fly fished, so I took them out and and uh and showed them how to fly fish. 00:12:44.720 --> 00:12:57.039 And we got into this river early and I did that because it's been so hot, and you you can catch more fish in four hours between 6 a.m. 00:12:57.360 --> 00:13:01.279 and uh and about noon than you can for the rest of the day. 00:13:01.519 --> 00:13:07.360 So we were there, and um I just have to be honest with you. 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:09.440 I mean, I like to fly fish, I think it's great. 00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:25.840 But but being in the river and being with uh around these huge rocks and being down in the in the in the sounds and the beauty and the sun starting to ripple down creation that you'd be happy, that you'd love it, that you'd experience as part of his beauty. 00:14:02.080 --> 00:14:03.919 Look at the rest of this verse. 00:14:04.080 --> 00:14:08.879 Look at the rest of this, the next two verses after verse 4, verse 5. 00:14:09.200 --> 00:14:21.519 For in the time of trouble, so here he is, he's surrounded again by trouble, he shall hide me in his pavilion, in the secret place of his tabernacle, he shall hide me. 00:14:21.840 --> 00:14:29.519 He shall set me high upon a rock, and now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me. 00:14:30.639 doing is beholding the beauty of the Lord, and he says that in beholding the beauty of the Lord in the tabernacle of God, surrounded by this tabernacle, his head is lifted up over his enemies. 00:14:56.320 --> 00:14:57.759 That's amazing. 00:14:58.639 --> 00:15:08.879 I think what he's saying here is that when we start to make the divine strategy of God our strategy, he gives us his divine strategy. 00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:19.840 That when we make his divine strategy, beholding the glory of the God of the Lord, our highest priority, God downloads his divine strategy. 00:15:20.799 --> him, and David's life is turned around because even in the midst of that, in the time of trouble, verse 5, verse 6, my head shall be lifted up. 00:16:04.320 --> 00:16:07.840 There's enemies above my enemies that are still all around him. 00:16:08.240 --> 00:16:14.879 I'm gonna continue to offer sacrifices of joy in the tabernacle, and I'm gonna sing praises to the Lord. 00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:22.320 Now, church, this is immensely practical because it doesn't sound practical at first. 00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:24.879 Beholding the beauty of the Lord, what are you talking about? 00:16:25.440 --> 00:16:27.120 Is that for artists? 00:16:27.519 --> 00:16:29.679 Is that for worship team people? 00:16:30.559 --> 00:16:34.480 Is that for people who like to take pictures and paint? 00:16:34.720 --> 00:16:50.559 No, I believe this is for all of us, and it's a DNA that God wants to cultivate in us that raises us up above all our circumstances, all our problems and situations, because God changes you. 00:16:53.200 --> 00:16:55.360 God is changing your heart. 00:16:56.639 --> 00:17:04.240 And there's nothing like a changed heart for understanding God's plans and his strategies. 00:17:04.559 --> 00:17:12.559 Because he's always speaking, he's always at work, and he's looking to and fro for those whose hearts are completely his that he might, what does he say? Again, let me, I think Edwards captures this again. 00:17:23.200 --> 00:17:33.839 Jonathan Edwards said, God is glorified not only by his glory being seen, but by it being rejoiced in. 00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:40.160 When those that see it delight in it, God is more glorified than if they only see it. 00:17:41.279 --> 00:17:49.119 God made the world that he might communicate, and the creature receives the glory both with his mind and his heart. 00:17:49.359 --> 00:18:04.480 So as we receive his glory, as we receive his wisdom, and then we reflect it back and praise to him, God is glorified start, we go into 40 nights of prayer, and he seeks very specifically to plant the road based on seven times him speaking, the road less traveled. 00:18:37.440 --> 00:18:40.799 Well, that sounds really exciting until you realize what I just said. 00:18:41.119 --> 00:18:44.319 The road less traveled. 00:18:44.799 --> 00:18:47.279 That means less traveled. 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:50.640 That means most people don't travel that way. 00:18:50.880 --> 00:18:56.160 And if you know the road not taken by Robert Frost, that's what the poem's about. 00:18:56.400 --> 00:19:06.319 Is he comes to a juncture and he takes the one trodden less, traveled less? 00:19:07.599 --> 00:19:13.039 So if you want the well-tailored roads, don't behold his glory. 00:19:13.759 --> 00:19:20.079 Because you'll --> 00:19:40.559 Or is it not true that it's as whole-hearted disciples that God calls us many times in our life, not once, not twice, but many times, we come to this place where our natural tendency expressing to us a principle of beholding the beauty of God that is a road less traveled that changes our soul and changes our heart to hear from Him. 00:21:03.039 --> 00:21:09.359 I believe the
