00:02:07.920 I want to talk about um what we mean by uh getting a breakthrough. 00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:14.960 God gave me this idea of breakthrough when we were in Costa Rica this summer for our church and for our lives. 00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:20.879 And I am serious that you have to get serious to get a breakthrough. 00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:26.719 And at the road, I believe God's word is on us for breakthrough. 00:02:26.879 --> 00:02:31.439 And if you'll get serious about a breakthrough, God will get serious about your breakthrough. 00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:34.159 But you have to get serious about the breakthrough. 00:02:34.479 --> 00:02:45.520 You have to have a conviction in your heart that you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, that you're sick and tired of status quo in something in your life. 00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:55.360 And that God is a God of breakthrough, and we're gonna talk about that tonight, but he's also a God that is able. 00:02:56.319 --> 00:02:59.680 He is able to change stuff in our life. 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:03.759 That's what being wholehearted is all about. 00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:08.639 Wholehearted is where people want to be, but very few ever experience it. 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:17.120 And the reason is because there's these barriers that we just will not pay the price to penetrate. 00:03:17.520 --> 00:03:26.879 And so let me give you three definitions found in different dictionaries on what a breakthrough is. 00:03:27.039 --> 00:03:27.840 I like these. 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:39.280 The first one, here's a breakthrough: an act or insistence of moving through or beyond an obstacle. 00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:40.479 I like that. 00:03:40.719 --> 00:03:50.080 An insistence, an act, it's action, it's an action word of moving through or beyond an obstacle. 00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:53.439 So you have obstacles in your life and it's an action. 00:03:53.520 --> 00:04:04.319 It's not thinking about it, it's not dwelling on it, it's not just praying about it, it's actually an action and an insistence that you're gonna break through this obstacle. 00:04:04.639 --> 00:04:10.159 A second definition: an offensive military assault. 00:04:10.639 --> 00:04:20.480 An offensive military assault that penetrates and carries beyond a defensive line. 00:04:20.639 --> 00:04:22.240 I really like this one. 00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:33.759 It is an offensive military assault that penetrates and carries beyond a defensive line. 00:04:34.079 --> 00:04:40.480 And so it's this idea of not being on the defensive, but being on the offensive. 00:04:41.279 --> 00:04:46.560 And there's a passage of scripture I'm gonna read in just a moment that, I mean, captures this in a mighty way. 00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:49.600 And then lastly, it's a sudden advance. 00:04:49.839 --> 00:04:51.600 It's a sudden advance. 00:04:52.319 --> 00:05:00.560 It's where you weren't advancing, you were not making progress, you were, you are not uh moving forward, and then you suddenly do. 00:05:01.680 --> 00:05:03.120 That's a breakthrough. 00:05:03.439 --> 00:05:11.600 Like you couldn't, it's like you couldn't get through, or you've been trying for a long time, and something happens and you get through. 00:05:11.920 --> 00:05:13.519 That's a breakthrough. 00:05:13.759 --> 00:05:17.439 And I did a I did a search, I said, I said, images of breakthrough. 00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:25.600 And there's things like breaking glass and shattering, and then I also saw the one that uh Dick used on Sunday, so I saw where he copied it. 00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:35.439 Um but but it's this it's kind of this idea of shattering through because I was thinking, you know, I should get a big piece of glass up here and just shatter it. 00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:39.279 And um, and tomorrow night I might do that, you never know. 00:05:39.519 --> 00:05:41.920 Um but it's uh it's like that. 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:44.800 It's it's you know what it is? forever. 00:06:04.480 --> 00:06:18.480 Well, what God wants to do is he wants to take a sledgehammer, and he wants to break you into a new advance in your life, and a new work of God, where you're gonna see stuff, experience stuff that you never have before. 00:06:18.639 --> 00:06:29.279 So look at Matthew 11, 12, and Jesus predicts, prophesies that there's a new day. 00:06:29.519 --> 00:06:33.439 There's a new day that started with John the Baptist. 00:06:33.600 --> 00:07:10.560 That when John the Baptist came, he inaugurated breakthrough like no other prophet before, like no other leader before, that with the coming of John and the coming then of Jesus, there was this new advancement, this new ability to assault the enemy, this new power, which we know now to be the Holy Spirit, that was going to break in with miracle-working, exceptional authority and super, say supernatural authority. 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:16.800 Say supernatural authority to give you supernatural authority to break in. 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:20.800 And here's what he says: it's one of my favorite verses in scripture. 00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:28.480 And if I sound hoarse, it's because I am I watched the national championship last night. 00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:57.839 I don't know if in my lifetime I've ever gone from so much thrill as a 26-yard missed field goal to so down and depressed as a touchdown, some 60-yard touchdown pass by the Crimson Tide, like 10 minutes later. 00:07:58.079 --> 00:08:01.519 Anyway, I lost my voice, but it's it's gonna come back, I know. 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:03.519 But probably not tonight. 00:08:03.759 --> 00:08:05.680 Uh Matthew 11, 12. 00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:21.680 And from the days, this is Jesus speaking, it's in red, from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:25.600 Here's what one commentator says of this passage. 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:43.120 This is a passage about people of keen enthusiasm and commitment who are willing to boldly respond to God in proclaiming and demonstrating the kingdom of God on earth, Luke 16, 16. 00:08:43.279 --> 00:09:01.600 It is a new way inaugurated by John and Jesus and the apostles, listen, of forceful breakthrough, forceful enthusiasm, forceful advancement, taking back ground from the enemy. 00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:05.840 Jesus inaugurated breakthrough. 00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:10.879 And God, the God we serve, is a God of breakthrough. 00:09:11.200 --> 00:09:12.799 That is who he is. 00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:16.639 That's his character, church. 00:09:16.799 --> 00:09:25.759 So look at one of the best passages, one of the best metaphors in scripture, I think, of breakthrough, a literal story that happened, and that's in 2 Samuel 5. 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:37.279 So turn to 2 Samuel 5 and a situation with David that I want to just camp on tonight, and I want to call this the God of breakthrough tonight. 00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:39.200 The God of breakthrough. 00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:41.200 Dr. 00:09:41.440 --> 00:09:46.960 Eastman got me a little uneasy because he started with this passage on Sunday. 00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:49.200 He doesn't know what I he didn't have any idea what I was gonna teach him on. 00:09:49.360 --> 00:09:50.480 I'm going, oh no. 00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:55.759 He's gonna, he's gonna steal my message, and I'm gonna have to work on a new message. 00:09:55.919 --> 00:09:58.080 But all he did was reference it and he went on, so that was great. 00:09:58.159 --> 00:10:01.440 And his message is way better than mine anyway, and that would have been cool. 00:10:01.600 --> 00:10:11.679 But 2 Samuel 5 is where we actually we actually see in Scripture this idea of the master or the God of breakthrough. 00:10:11.759 --> 00:10:15.120 That God is a God of breakthrough. 00:10:15.279 --> 00:10:29.919 And in this story, I like to say, for you that have heard me talk on the Old Testament, Old Testament is God concealed, New Testament revealed. 00:10:30.399 --> 00:10:35.440 So truth or God concealed, New Testament revealed. 00:10:35.600 --> 00:10:41.679 So what's concealed here is what we just read in Matthew 11, 12. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:51.840 What's concealed here is the God of breakthrough is this storyline, and it's always it's always narrative in the Old Testament, it's almost always narrative. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:59.279 It's and I won't get too, I don't want to get too techy, I mean too nerdy here, but but it's didactic a lot of times in the New Testament. 00:10:59.440 --> 00:11:11.600 So it's the truth is concealed through story in the old, but it's revealed in truth concepts, New Testament revealed. 00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:15.519 So David has become king. 00:11:16.159 --> 00:11:18.080 He's been on the run for 17 years. 00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.960 He gets anointed king over Judah. 00:11:21.200 --> 00:11:25.519 So for the next seven years in Hebron, he's the king. 00:11:26.080 --> 00:11:39.519 Then uh a civil war occurs over seven years, and finally David consolidates the kingdom with Israel, and Judah and Israel are brought together with him as a king. 00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:43.279 And so that's where we pick it up in verse 17. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:59.759 Now, when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David, and David heard of it and went down to the stronghold. 00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:04.639 Now, circle in your Bible, highlight it, whatever you're using, anointed. 00:12:05.039 --> 00:12:16.799 I want you to circle that, underline it, uh, make it yellow, um, star it, you know, whatever you do with your computer or your phone or your notebook. 00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:19.600 Here's what I want you to get first here tonight. 00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:26.080 If you go after God's anointing, Satan's gonna go after you. 00:12:27.200 --> 00:12:42.559 If you will let God anoint you and call you into something for which he wants to use you, you might as well draw a big target on your back because the Philistines are coming. 00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:44.639 Always works that way. 00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:50.159 So, one of the first things we need to think about with breakthrough is you gotta get ready to battle. 00:12:50.399 --> 00:12:54.960 You gotta get ready to fight, you've got to be on the offensive. 00:12:55.679 --> 00:13:00.960 And and if you don't, we'll see what we'll see what the battle's like here. 00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:02.879 He's ready to take you out. 00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:06.080 But if you'll fight, he'll back off after a while. 00:13:06.240 --> 00:13:09.120 But it takes time and it's always a fight. 00:13:09.279 --> 00:13:18.080 And here's the thing: you're here, I'm convinced every one of you here is because you want to break through, and you can't get a breakthrough though until you know your anointing. 00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:22.559 And the anointing is the work of the Spirit. 00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:24.159 You know where anointing comes from? 00:13:24.480 --> 00:13:28.480 Anointing is what shepherds did in Israel to their sheep. 00:13:28.960 --> 00:13:30.799 That's where the whole term comes from. 00:13:30.960 --> 00:13:34.960 They would take oil, they would take olive oil, and they would anoint it on their sheep. 00:13:35.039 --> 00:13:36.080 You know why? 00:13:36.960 --> 00:13:46.639 Because Israel is a dry climate, but not as dry as here, now not as humid as Georgia, where I'm from, but lots of insects. 00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:49.039 And they wanted to protect their sheep from insects. 00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:57.759 They wanted to protect their sheep from insects and different things like that and diseases, so the oil was protective over the sheep. 00:13:57.919 --> 00:14:03.600 And then later in time, God began to use this idea of the anointing of oil for kingship. 00:14:04.159 --> 00:14:10.639 And so, you guys, you're anointed by God and it's protective. 00:14:11.360 --> 00:14:13.600 It's protective for you. 00:14:14.080 --> 00:14:17.279 And every one of us in this room has an anointing from God. 00:14:17.440 --> 00:14:21.679 You're called to do something with your life. 00:14:22.320 --> 00:14:24.720 We're not called just to worship. 00:14:24.879 --> 00:14:32.960 We're not called just to attend church, we're not called to just get saved, we're called to do something that changes people's lives. 00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:34.480 And it starts with us. 00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:37.440 You experiencing intimacy with Christ. 00:14:37.519 --> 00:14:40.639 And that anointing is there and it's available to you. 00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:42.879 Look at 1 John. 00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:45.440 Um, 1 John 2.27. 00:14:45.519 --> 00:14:46.960 I love this passage. 00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:51.120 John says this about all of us. 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:57.519 The anointing, the anointing which you have received from him abides in you. 00:14:58.399 --> 00:15:02.399 Every one of us that's a believer in Christ is anointed by God. 00:15:02.720 --> 00:15:05.919 Now listen, don't, I don't, I want to talk about two anointings. 00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:13.600 One is the anointing everyone has because you've received the Holy Spirit by being born again. 00:15:13.759 --> 00:15:15.600 That's what he's talking about here. 00:15:15.840 --> 00:15:20.399 But there's a second anointing, and that is for empowerment. 00:15:21.840 --> 00:15:28.960 That's where the Spirit of God empowers you, church, for something he's called you to do. 00:15:29.120 --> 00:15:35.279 It's why all you beautiful women out there, you get fall in love, you get married, and you have a baby. 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:39.919 And you said all your life, I don't know how I could ever be a parent. 00:15:40.399 --> 00:15:46.240 And then you have a baby, and something happens to you, and you get weird. 00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:49.200 And you start wanting to be a mom. 00:15:49.759 --> 00:15:54.639 And every father should be really happy about that because you ain't no mom. 00:15:55.519 --> 00:16:00.720 And so that you're changed because God's transforming is kind of an anointing for motherhood. 00:16:00.879 --> 00:16:04.159 And same with fathers, but there's something if they'll go with it. 00:16:04.720 --> 00:16:24.480 Well, in service, in different areas of our life, some of you are called to be writers, and some of you are called to be musicians, and some of you are called to be to be mechanics, and some of you are called to be to be lawyers, and some of you are called to be artists and graphic artists, and I could go on and on, and that's from God. 00:16:25.440 --> 00:16:26.879 That's from Him. 00:16:27.279 --> 00:16:37.360 And so one of the aspects of breakthrough is the enemy often does his biggest work in the area you're most anointed by God. 00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:41.360 And so oftentimes you'll see people with a prophetic gift. 00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:56.639 I mean, they can see stuff in the spirit and they get into drugs because they get addicted to the high that comes from drugs, which was a high that God meant them to have, to have insight into other people's lives. 00:16:56.720 --> 00:17:06.880 And God's anointing them that way that Satan knows it, and so they come in and they skew it, and they kill their ambitions, and they kill their anointing. 00:17:07.759 --> 00:17:10.079 And you gotta want the anointing. 00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:12.559 David was anointed. 00:17:12.799 --> 00:17:15.039 So here's this is a great example. 00:17:15.359 --> 00:17:18.240 David is anointed by Samuel. 00:17:18.559 --> 00:17:21.359 He had nothing to do with it, it's all by grace. 00:17:21.519 --> 00:17:36.079 He's just in Bethlehem with a bunch of sheep, gets called in, uh, oil's poured on him from the prophet of Israel, but for the next 17 years, what happens? 00:17:36.400 --> 00:17:38.720 He has to fight for the anointing. 00:17:39.680 --> 00:17:43.519 So when you're when you receive Christ, it's all by grace. 00:17:43.680 --> 00:17:48.880 You have nothing to do with it, you receive it, but now you have to fight for that next anointing. 00:17:48.960 --> 00:17:51.680 And that next anointing is a call in your life. 00:17:51.920 --> 00:17:57.039 And calling has nothing to do with vocational Christian work. 00:17:57.119 --> 00:17:58.480 That's not what I mean by calling. 00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:12.799 You know, but but what I mean by calling is that you're a believer, you're a disciple of Christ, and you're called to do something. 00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:15.119 And so, and but you have to fight for it. 00:18:15.359 --> 00:18:20.720 David had to battle, so he's he's consolidating the kingdom, you guys. 00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:25.440 And that's when the enemy begins to they're searching for him, right after he gets anointed. 00:19:07.839 --> 00:19:08.720 Now, verse 18. 00:19:08.960 --> 00:19:17.440 The Philistines also went and deployed themselves in the valley of Repham or Rephim. 00:19:18.240 --> 00:19:20.400 Guess what that means? 00:19:20.960 --> 00:19:25.039 In your Bible, if you have a study Bible, it says the valley of giants. 00:19:25.839 --> 00:19:29.519 They go into the valley of giants. 00:19:30.319 --> 00:19:34.960 They go into the valley of giants. 00:19:36.160 --> 00:19:39.119 There's always a valley of giants. 00:19:40.799 --> 00:19:43.599 There's giants in all of our lives. 00:19:44.240 --> 00:19:48.799 There's areas of our life where there's always been strongholds of the enemy. 00:19:50.079 --> 00:19:53.519 Satan wants to fight you in that valley. 00:19:54.400 --> 00:19:56.000 This is my valley. 00:19:56.799 --> 00:20:02.400 And you're familiar with it because it's the same valley that you've been in since childhood. 00:20:03.200 --> 00:20:11.200 It's the same valley where your dad put you, or your mom put you, or that coach put you, and shamed you. 00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:14.559 And demons want to keep you there. 00:20:15.680 --> 00:20:19.920 Because if he can keep you there, there's no way you're going to experience breakthrough. 00:20:20.480 --> 00:20:24.720 Giants, I'm going to say it's a valley research on shame and vulnerability. 00:20:41.039 --> 00:20:45.279 In her book, Daring Greatly, which I'm reading right now. 00:20:45.839 --> 00:20:49.759 She gives what are the shame, biggest shame areas for women. 00:20:50.079 --> 00:20:56.079 And by the way, I'll give you a little just a little um advertisement for the women's breakthrough. 00:20:56.400 --> 00:20:58.880 I'm speaking at the of these. 00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:55.440 I'm gonna give you about eight keys at the retreat, at the advance, but here's just a few about some of the giants in women's lives or shame in women's lives.
