chapter 10, and we've looked at the rich young ruler. 00:00:13.119 --> 00:00:41.280 You recall that the rich young ruler, he came to Jesus, and in the discussion with Jesus, he was clear that he had followed the commandments that Jesus spoke to him about, which were all the commandments related to the aspects of a religious commitment, outward behavior, none of those commandments that Jesus spoke of or inward intimacy relationship with him. 00:00:42.320 --> 00:00:48.799 And then it says, it has this key verse in which it says, Jesus loved him. 00:00:49.920 --> 00:01:01.280 So Mark records it, Jesus loved the rich young ruler, and then Jesus calls him, challenges him to give up all of his riches. 00:01:01.439 --> 00:01:06.560 You see, what he noticed in the rich young ruler, we've already talked about this, was this was the idol in his life. 00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:10.079 In church, we have idols in our lives at times, don't we? 00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:15.359 And Jesus calls us out to surrender our idols to him. 00:01:15.599 --> 00:01:28.000 We sometimes are mistaken that we think that idols are only in Japan or only in South America, or idols are somehow only in some Asian country where they worship some kind of a statue. 00:01:28.159 --> 00:01:37.120 But idols are anything within our heart that takes our love away from God. 00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:38.719 And so he couldn't follow him. 00:01:38.879 --> 00:01:49.359 And it's the only time in the Bible, it's the only place in Scripture where Jesus gives a challenge to being his disciple where he gets a negative response. Jesus answered again and said to them, Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God. 00:02:57.280 --> 00:03:04.879 Now, Jesus says twice, he mentions twice how hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God. 00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:07.599 Second time he says, those who trust in riches. 00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:09.759 And notice the context. 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:18.240 The context is the Old Testament scriptures, the Old Dispensation, where all through the scriptures their blessings were poured out. 00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:22.960 Blessings were poured out based on obedience to God. 00:03:23.120 --> 00:03:28.400 And so the Jews had, they looked at the riches of David, they had looked at the riches of Solomon. 00:03:28.560 --> clear that if you fully obeyed God, the rains would come, the harvest would come, there'd be blessing on your family, your wife would bear children. 00:03:56.240 --> 00:04:04.240 And then Jesus comes from this angle after talking to this young man who's very wealthy, and he says, it's difficult. 00:04:04.319 --> 00:04:06.479 I mean, this must have just blown their mind. 00:04:06.639 --> 00:04:13.360 It's difficult for someone with wealth to enter the kingdom of God. 00:04:15.360 --> 00:04:21.680 Trusting in their riches instead of trusting in Christ. 00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:32.800 And we know that God's not against riches per se, but he is against those who would find their self-sufficiency and their power from their riches. 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:36.079 And so Jesus challenges this. 00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:47.680 And later, Jesus would say, No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise 00:14:17.360 So there is this, there's this imputed righteousness from Christ when we believe and we take on his righteous work, his righteous actions that were, that were presented to us not only in
