Episode 5: KNICKS IN FINALS/ NFC South Schedule Predictions

Knicks have made it to the finals for the first time since 1999. Updates from both games, and taking the predictions to the NFL South.

All right, welcome, welcome, welcome. Welcome to Between the Coasts. I'm your host, Fernando, with our stars, Cass, Yes, and Jared. Today we will be reviewing the NBA conference finals. Also, we will be discussing the NFC South schedule predictions and any news that will follow. Jared, what is your update about my Knicks and the Cavs?

Well, we knew that the Knicks were going to sweep them, right? I think we can all agree. I don't know why you thought they would get one after they blew a 22-point lead. We've seen the Knicks do it last season at least. Listen, man, the Knicks are on an incredible run right now, to say the least. What? They've won 11 games in a row. Yep, that is correct. They're beating people by 31 points per game. I am not calling them the NBA champions, but I am gonna say whoever they face coming out the West, that's going seven because this Knicks team is tough. Like, they're tough. And if anything, as I wrap it up and I pass it to Cass, like the Cavaliers showed us two things. James Harden is old, and his time being a starter, it it's coming to an end. Like, James Harden needs to be a six-man. I still think he can, you know, bring valuable minutes to a contending team, but you can't rely on James Harden in the postseason. We've said that for years. That continues to be true. And James Harden needs to go to the bench and be a six-man. That's one. And number two, I said it before. Donovan Mitchell is a robin. He is not a bad man. He cannot be the best player on the championship team. End of story.

Yeah. No, I mean, uh, Jared, actually, you were pretty much right. It was actually 24, uh, but they blew out the Cavs by an average margin of 31. They are actually the second biggest sweep in the conference finals or NBA finals with a margin of plus 77. That's insane, bro. Right behind the Wakes over the Spurs in 2001. That is the next one. And the closest one after that is the Bulls over the Magic in 96.

That is also correct. Yeah. I mean, at the end of the day, I don't really have much to say about the Cavs at this point. I don't think we should waste our time talking about them just from what we've unfortunately seen. They haven't provided us much of what we we thought would be at least a competitive series. And honestly, like, I don't agree with Kendrick Perkins much, but yeah, no, this was a disgrace to the NBA. Like, we expected more from this team. And you're telling me that. Let's see. Let's see. Max Struuss, five points. Evan Mobley, 15 points, 7 rebounds. You'd be like, oh, okay. But, you know, plus minus is minus 30. With three turnovers. Also, he was not never in the hole to defend. They literally were getting wherever they wanted. Jared Allen, six points, three rebounds. Why are you even on the team? You're supposed to be one of the primary defenders in the hole. And then let's not forget James Harden. I mean 12 points. He did only have five turnovers, but he was two of eight. Oh, wait. That's terrible. He was also 0 of 6 from 3. Like, and Donovan Mitchell, like, unfortunately, 9 of 8, like 31 points. I at the end of the day, I can't not say like he just can't get it done. Like, they unfortunately just were outplayed in every single way. And fun fun fact for our boy Brunson, he has not played in any closing game so far in the final in the playoffs. In the fourth quarter. He's sits out pretty much that fourth quarter because they're already blowing him out. But to talk about the Knicks, I mean, Bravo. They have not been to the finals since 1999. And Star Wars won, the Phantom Menace, was in theaters. Y2K was a concern the last time that happened. The Houston Commons won their third championship. If we're talking about some WNBA. Napster just launched. And John Elway went out with his Super Bowl win at current at that time the oldest quarterback of 38. So yeah, that's how long it's been. We were five years old.

And to be honest, it's a beautiful story. I mean, Towns said it. He's been a fan since he was a kid. This is the team he grew up watching. Brunson, his dad, played for this Knicks team the last time they were even this close. Like, so for him to basically carry on the title and bring it back, like, it's it's definitely a thing of beauty. And this team, they they not only does it show that they had a plan, small guards can win, uh, but it also shows that you know that Villanova team was built right. Like that Villanova Villanova culture, like unfortunately, Divin Chinzo couldn't be a part of it, but man, they they really showed out uh and they've been completely unstoppable this entire playoffs. I agree. I agree.

I I love it. I love it, I love it, I love hearing all about it. But, I mean, like the late great Kobe Bryant said, job's not done. So as excited, as excited as I am that the Knicks are in the finals, the job is not done. They need four more wins. So hopefully they can get it. But Cassius at this time, hit me with the transition. Alright, now we are going to fly out west to OKC versus Spurs. Jared, I will let you have your first take on game four.

I didn't think that the series would not go six or seven at the very least. Like this is the series that, like I said, would be the best series of of any of the uh conference finals, and you know, it's it's proving to be what it is. It it's good, it's an interesting story already because now that the Knicks are there, they're gonna be well rested. Who's the better team to face? Because both teams are facing injury. And to be honest with you, I don't think anybody wants to face Wimp because he he adds five extra feet of where you shoot your shot from. So you just went from a high percentage shot to a low to mid-range shot that you can barely hit. And it's always that shot where no one shoots, which is right before the three-point line and right inside the arch. So like it's it's a different thing, but I I think that to Jared's point, like the championship mentality could kind of come up at some point of like being that thing that puts them over the hump, but I really think the Spurs are gonna take it. I I think that Wimby is is a different breed, and Shaylin Williams, he's still dealing with his issues, and then AJ Mitchell, they said it wasn't an issue, but then he's actually out uh for this next game for game five. It's definitely keep an eye on. So I I'm I can't be more impressed with how Wimby keeps playing, and I called it Stefan Castle. And his third season is locking down the MVP, two-time MVP, and has shot four under 50% the last three games, which has never happened so far in his career.

So here's the thing. I was wrong about game four. Spurs came out, they blitzed him, the curb stomped him. I do think championship pedigree will play a huge factor as we get to the championship rounds within this series. So game six and uh game seven, if there is a game seven. I do think injury both both teams are banged up, but I just think OKC with what they have going on, they got the MVP, two-time MVP, and they just like championship DNA matters ultimately. I think Wemby and them are coming, but if it doesn't happen this year, they're definitely just around the corner. And like there's no other way to put it. Like the Spurs are here, they're here to stay. Cassius alluded to that the last episode, but so are the Thunder. And I think their championship experience, their D playoff runs, that's gonna be the deciding factor in this series.

So, Jared, how many games do you think it's gonna go to?

I mean, I think if OKC wins tonight, I think OKC wraps it up in six in a thriller. I still think the Knicks, if we're early finals prediction, like I think the Knicks could be whomever comes out the West, if I'm being honest. But that's going seven.

Okay. I'm with Cassius. I still think Spurs and OKC is going seven games, and I think the Spurs are still gonna win.

So the NBA is a place where you have to take steps. It's not, and Cassius alluded to this in the last episode too. Like, it's not the NFL where you can go from worst to first. And I think that though the Spurs are right here, even if the Spurs get out of this round, are they really beating the Knicks the way they're playing? Be honest.

I the only thing I will say is I think the Spurs match up worse, actually, because they have not only Mitchell Robinson, but Tamp Towns. It is two bigger bodies that they that you can put on Wimby versus Chet is so much smaller. And like Wimby's UP Chet. Like, that's like I said, they've been playing each other since they were 19 years old. Actually, I'm sorry, younger than that, since they were 17. So at the end of the day, I think uh I think that it is a much of a worse night matchup for them just because the Thunder, to actually Jared's point last uh episode as well, they're so much they're so deep, and they've already already been prepared for the injuries that have already plagued the team during the regular season.

I'm trying to tell you what, the first short king to get there since Steph Curry at this point in time, the first one that had that big of an impact since AI, like, at least from being short, short kings with man, it's just crazy because you think of those three and Isaiah Thomas, you think of those four as short kings that like led their team to a finals run.

Yeah, I I think uh, you know, not only that, but just just who he is as a person, not only they've talked about as a teammate and just as a player, like he's he's just all around, like, of course he should be the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, like what he did with that team. And honestly, like I will give kudos to Kat. Like, I've personally, of course, before we started this podcast, I've sh I've talked about how much I do not appreciate his game. I I think he's evolved his game, I think he's actually showed what he's supposed to be doing and how he's supposed to be playing, which is more of a point center. And and he's really improved not only his vision, but just what that offense looks like. Um and yeah, uh also McCall Bridges. Worth the picks.

Even though the Bucks, you know, they made they made enough moves this year. They made enough moves. Um I always think of Mike Evans, though. I always think of Mike Evans. Yeah, I think they still get that. They still lose to them, though. Okay, then they go to Lambeau. For week eight.

I'm not gonna get into it. Didn't think he was that kind of guy. Not gonna lie.

But that without Josh Jacobs running that offense, you can't stick a rookie in, you can't stick their their backup the weight in and be like, oh yeah, this is no, it's not gonna be the same offense. He's too deep a threat as a passing running back, and you're between the tackles running back to even think that you can replace him.

And you know, the NFL community would be like, oh, what a shame.

Week 14 at home, they welcome the Saints. That should be a win. I got it as a win. They're gonna I don't think they're gonna they're gonna win. But then you got week 15 at home, the Bengals and Joe Burr. Loss. Yeah. Week 16, this is uh to be determined. I'm assuming uh yeah, who knows? So there's no date on here, but week 16 on the road versus the Steelers. Loss. It could be a loss, could be a trap game for them, so I'm gonna say loss as well. Uh week 17, big loss when uh they play Seattle at home. Yeah, it's a loss. And week 18, you know, they're gonna get back into the win column against the Falcons. I agree, that's also that's a win. I gotta see how that offense operates this year, but I I don't think they didn't play on the road well last year. We'll see how they do this year.

I mean, it's it's hard to show love with some of these schedules. You know. The division is facing some tough. I mean, they're facing the NFC North, which is already one of the toughest divisions. I would say it's it's pretty much tied or, you know, people say one A and one B to us in the NFC, which is our next segment, NFC West, just because of the offensive power and just how well sometimes these uh teams do with quarterback play. So uh yeah, I think it's gonna be an interesting interesting year for for that division. Especially the Falcons. I agree. If the Falcons don't win more than five games, what are they gonna do? Who are they gonna get for quarterback? Who are they gonna get? I don't know. They would be the most rookie-ready team. They would be. But honestly, the only thing I'm concerned about is if we're talking about the Falcons, two injury prone quarterbacks, both left-handed, is their third QB on the roster also left-handed quarterback? Because I'd be pissed if I have a right-hand quarterback and these two get injured, and then you've been practicing this whole season only left-handed plays. Trust me, I'm a lefty, I know. It's it's the difference. You gotta take the ball differently from people. You got it's a it's a whole different thought process of how you have to receive the ball. Even the way a lefty throws a ball is not the same. For Drake London as he catches it. So at least they're used to it with Michael Penix, but yeah, it's it's definitely something uh I just like to bring up.
