Alrighty, welcome to another episode of Between the Coast. I'm your host, Fernando, with our stars Cassius and Jared. Today we will be discussing the NBA draft and MBA news. So we're going to start out with breaking NBA news, and I'm going to pass the mic to Cassius.

Yeah, so as of last night, we finally have, as we talked about last episode, a destination for Giannis. And Pat Riley still hates the Celtics. Said, Ain't no way I'm letting Giannis go to the Celtics. After a year-long saga, Bucks and Bobby Portis have been traded to the Miami Heat for Tyler Hero, Khalil Ware, Jamie Jacques Jr. and sorry if I butcher this name. Kasparas Jacusinias. Three first round picks, including the number 13 pick for tonight. A pick swap in 2030, and a 2033 second round pick. Along with the 13, the Heat are also sending the Bucks an unprotected first round pick for 2031 and 2033. Yeah. So crazy. They did a whole bunch of nothing. Honestly, the Bucks gotta steal. That is that is a package, especially for Giannis, an older Giannis. I'm not saying he's you know LeBron level age or Steph Curry, but he he's older. You know, he's he's in that a little bit past his prime, but not fully out of his prime. Um, and yeah, I don't I to I you know we were talking a little before the show. I to Jared's point, I do not think this puts them over the echelon for the Heat. They have no backcourt now.

No one. He is essentially in South Ma South Milwaukee. That's all it is. I mean, we forget about Bam, but like, I mean, Bam doesn't move the needle for them alone by himself, which is why they're bringing in Giannis. And yeah, like, I mean, it this trade, it had to happen for Giannis because he won it out, but he could have gone so many other places where he was where they were ready to contend. Miami is not a contender. They they got beat by the Hornets, they didn't even make it through the play-in.

They are basically a play-in team for the last four years with the Bulls and the Hawks, like they've been that echelon. The Hawks actually finally got out of that circle, but right. Yeah, I don't know. I I mean we'll see what they do, but they just gave away their draft pick to get a at least a point guard.

Right, which goes to your point. They need a gun, they need a point guard. They don't have anything in the backcourt, it doesn't move the needle. This trade is actually like like he said, Milwaukee won the trade, but like the heat, he still he might as well stay in Milwaukee.

That's it. Hey, he's he's liking South Milwaukee heat, I can tell you that much. He's gonna like them beaches. He he will. Um, second uh news. So this actually is uh two-parter. The Timberwolves are sending Julius Randle in the number 28 pick to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team trade that also sends Nick Claxton to the Chicago Bulls. Uh, the Timberwolves will get the number 33 pick for Randall and the number 28 pick. Uh, we're still waiting for more of the details to come out with that. But again, wow. The Timberwolves just gave up on Randall. They said gave up. They he's they said he's not worth it, which is crazy compared to Rudy Gobert. But Rudy did actually have a showing. He was able to defend um Joker very well in the playoffs. It was probably the best showing he's had against Joker that we've seen in his career against those two in a matchup. Um, but yeah, like very surprised at this trade, but it does lead into our next story, which is true to my heart. I'm so glad I'm so sad they traded him Ayu Desomu, Chicago uh local, was on the Bulls for a while until he was traded to the Timberwolves, intends to sign a five-year, $112 million contract to return to the Timberwolves, which is why they think they traded Randall to free up his two-year left remaining contract. Um, so yeah. Pretty pretty big news. That was all last night that happened.

Giving up on Randall after one year is crazy. He had a great year. It was just a playoff run. Two years. It was two years. Yeah. Well, because town has been on the Knicks for two years. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's right. That's right, that's right. So, I mean, I don't know, man. Like, he was balling out into the playoffs, but you know, sometimes that's enough to do it.

I mean, honestly, the the biggest thing with Randall is always been his consistency with injury. You know, he does have that ability to, you know, lead a team, especially uh from you know multiple aspects of the game. He can shoot the three, he can get what he wants in the paint. Uh, he's a pretty decent defender, but at the end of the day, if you can't stay on the court and help your team win, and also when you guys are healthy and your three main stars, Gobert, uh, Anthony Edwards, and him are on the court and you aren't performing, and you're leaving Ant to do the work while he's playing injured, it doesn't make any sense. Like you're you're supposed to be on a number two option, and you didn't look like it in the that last round of the playoffs.

So I think that's all I got. All right. Well, if that's all that we have for breaking news at this time, we would transition to the NBA draft, that is tonight. We are going to cover each team's spots, followed by who we think they might draft and how that player might do on that team. So, with the first pick, the Washington Wizards, um, Cassius, who do you think they're gonna draft?

Alright, who I think if if the Wizards are smart and the way this team is constructed, they just re-sign supposedly Trey Young, they said he's coming back. You don't need Darien Peterson. Honestly, I don't think you want Darien Peterson with the way he acts. But I'm not saying he's a he's a he's not a top two talent. The kid is can ball. He he can honestly be a future two-way player. His offensive prowess is he is a walking bucket. But at the end of the day, AJ DeBonsa is who I think should be the first pick overall. His size, his his athletic ability, he has been basically since high school uh viewed as either ranked first or second for his class the entire time. Uh that's going into high school, that's going into college. Um, and to be honest with you, he's basically, in my opinion, a very similar play style to Kevin Durant. And if you're telling me I can get a Kevin Durant-like player with the head on this kid already, like, yeah, to take him, pair him with Anthony Davis, pair him with Trey Young, pair him with Alex Tsar, that is a that is a front court I'd be terrified to walk into. The Alex Tarr comment was a little crazy, but regardless, I see what you were doing.

AJ is a dog, man. Like he said, play style like Kevin Durant. He's a big body, he's he's wider than KD. He's got more muscle on him than KD did at this point in time in his career. I mean, he can shoot, he can drive, he can dribble. You have to take him number one. If you don't, what are you doing? It's that simple. What are you doing? So Cass is right. AJ gotta go number one. If they fumble this, it's gonna next 10 years is gonna be bad.

All right, and with the number two pick, the Utah Jazz. Uh, Cassius again, who do you think the Utah Jazz are gonna draft?

Uh so from all out of the box, everyone of course has AJ and then Darian Peterson going second. In my opinion, for the way this team is structured, the Jazz actually played very great basketball towards the end of the season. And in my opinion, I think the Jazz should continue to grow the their front court, which is who my opinion is also, I think is the actual second best player. The kid's the young one of the youngest players in this draft, but he's also a born winner. Uh, he's actually already a two-time Olympic champion. He is an all-American uh McDonald's player, MVP twice. Uh, and that's of course Carlos Boozer's son, Cameron Boozer. I think he would fit in perfectly with that jazz mentality. He acts almost like a vet already the way he plays. Reminds me very similar to how Dylan Harper is, uh, in terms of like him coming in to be a basically already NBA ready player. Um, and the way he plays his game, it's completely different than his dad. He actually has a three-point shot. His handles are much better. He is a little slow with his dribble style, but at the end of the day, that can be developed and learned. Um, so I think that honestly, yeah, I see Darien Peterson can go here, but I really think that he fits in best uh with Cameron Boozer and the jazz.

So there it's hard to argue with what you just said um for a couple different reasons. Utah, they need a guard, they got big bodies down low. I mean, he adds to that, but like they have that. And it's not like Laurie Markinen and Kessler.

Yeah, Kessler, and then they also traded for uh uh um Jaron Jackson.

They have Jaron Jackson too. So like they got a lot of big bodies. I I see what you're saying, it makes a lot of sense, but they need a guard, and that's why I think Darion Peterson, they're probably gonna they're probably gonna take a risk on him.

So the only reason I'll I'll I guess I should say is I think that they should get rid of Marking. He hasn't really moved the needle for them. I mean, I know that team has been in development for so long, but they since essentially uh you know Donovan Mitchell left. But at the end of the day, like you put Boozer in the three spot, you have Jaron Jackson, who is your power forward, and Kessler needs to be your starting center because he's your he is a true center. So that's where Markinen, honestly, at this point, I think should be on a team that he could benefit. Honestly, send him back to send him to the Lakers. But uh I digress. Um, but yeah, I I think that's where I think that they could really make that team win. Uh, like I said, they have Caden George, they have Ace Bailey, like those players can be shifted around, and you could be a long team uh that helps defend and place a very strong style in the West.

So I mean I think they're long as is, but I hear what you're saying. And I but I think Laurie Markinen, like, I think they want to keep him around. I think he he doesn't move the needle for them either, but he's still young enough to where like he can be a part of this rebuild and like lead the rebuild. So I don't think they want to push, I don't think they want to get rid of him. Oh, it actually is old as he because he's been in, I mean, he's been playing with the bulls for going on. Oh, he's almost 30. He's almost 30. So I mean, but like he's still a bucket, he's still I don't know, man. I I don't you're right though. He doesn't move the needle for them, but at the end of the day, uh boozer is just like like they it could go either way, but I think they they need a guard.

They need a guard. I agree. I I think I think it can go either way. I think you're getting a well, I think you're getting a better leader uh with Cameron versus, you know, I think of course Darien Peterson, like I said, is a walking bucket.

Like all right, I like it. And uh we would travel out to Memphis with a third pick, the Grizzlies. Uh Cassius, do you see them uh drafting Cameron Boozer or someone else?

So again, like I do like the Cameron Boozer pick. Um, but I I think that if you know the Jazz Jazz did their due diligence and they pick him, I think Darien Peterson is the replacement for John Morant. John Morant's going somewhere else. He like if you take this kid, he is a John Morant replacement, unfortunately, in not only talent, but maybe personality, might be a troublemaker. So just be careful, Memphis. Um, but at the end of the day, like you can have him step into that role with a very young team that had a lot of great young players. Um, and I think it's I think it's a perfect match in terms of what that playstyle is and how they are. Um also I just don't think Darren Peterson wants to go to the Jazz, but it's not like you can really choose where you go. You're not Kobe Bryant's status, sir.

I don't disagree with anything he said. Um Memphis is they're gonna be on, they're gonna be down for a while. So you might as well take somebody like Peterson who can do what he wants and take as many shots as he wants and complain about not playing while they're bad. So and Ja is probably gonna get traded before the draft, like or if not during the draft. So we'll see what happens.

Alright. And uh with the fourth pick, the Chicago Bulls will be drafting who it's gotta be Caleb Wilson.

Gotta be Caleb Wilson. Uh, of course, we did just add uh from that trade Nick Claxton that actually has a center, which is much needed. They the tallest player, I think, on the team was Jabari Smith at 6'9, uh, after the Bulls did all their trades last year. Um, so it's I Caleb Wilson, honestly, they actually said he is the probably one of the smartest players uh in this draft. Uh actually said he interviewed the best ever, um, according to some of the ESBN analysts, that he's had some of the best interviews, even better than uh what Tyler Halli uh Tyrese Halliburton had. But this kid is uh, of course, unfortunately got injured towards the end of his season, but talent at the wazoo. Like he is exactly what the Bulls need. Uh, and he was actually third in steals and blocks in the nation with the least amount of games played out of the other two, um, which was Cameron Boozer, uh, and then I for can't remember the other guy's name, but he played for uh Virginia. So uh at the end of the day, I really think that Caleb Wilson adds a different level to not only defense but offensive game for the Bulls, and they need both. They need both. And Josh Giddy needs someone to throw the ball to.

So I mean, there's not much else to say after that. He's absolutely right. Like Josh Giddy needs a run and mate. Um and they need some they need somebody who's gonna lead in that locker room. Bulls been down for a minute. They did add some height. Um But I mean, this is this is probably the best case scenario for him. Gets the start immediately, gets a lot of run. So, and I mean, he he plays both ends of the floor. That's what the Bulls need because defense has been lacking for a couple years now.

So all right, I like it. And we will fly out west, the fifth pick, uh, via Indiana, but the LA Clippers have the fifth pick. Um, who do you guys see the LA Clippers drafting?

It's gotta be my Illinois boy. You trade for um, you know, Darius Garland last year. So that's your point guard. He ain't going nowhere. As long as he stays healthy. Uh you need a shooting guard. You need someone to help Kawhi, if Kawhi stays, of course. Uh, and to push the break. Yeah, he might be honestly. Um at the end of the day, the give even better case scenario, Kawhi's leaving, you need someone to score the ball. And Keenan Wagler can score the freaking ball. He can get you buckets inside, he can shoot the middle, he can shoot the three. And also his handles are pretty pretty up there from what I've seen this season with current players uh that are coming from this draft. So I I think it's uh a match made in heaven for them. Um especially because like I said, uh watching him all season, this kid is talented. He was not ranked at all to be in the top 10, actually, I even think the top 15 before he had the season he had this year.

March Madness run helps. There's that too. But I mean, yeah, they see honestly, man, once you start getting to this point in the draft, it's anybody's game. That's the that's the issue. Um, but he's right, like Cass has been spot on with what these teams need. Uh, they do have Darius Scarlin. Um, Kawhi is probably gonna be up out of there. That's gonna be a team that they're gonna get younger too, and they're going to have a lot of options and a lot of there's gonna be a lot of young guys getting some run on there. It's gonna be like the Clippers are oh, we're gonna be like, who on the Clippers? Because man, they're about to get young and they're about to lose Kawhi. So, I mean, he's not wrong, though. Darius Garland's not going anywhere. He's gonna need a running mate, similar to, they're probably gonna do it similar to how like Cleveland did it when he was there. They brought in Donovan Mitchell, except like now Darius Garland is the vet. So, and and they'll be back because they still got Tyloo. So I mean it's just a matter of time. But they're gonna be down for a minute and they're gonna be young, so why not take a young guard to pair with your with your future point guard? So point guard of the future, I mean.

All right, I like it. And uh we will move on to the sixth pick, the Brooklyn Nets. Do you guys see them drafting Mikel Brown Jr., the point guard out of Louisville, or someone else?

I I see it. Don't get me wrong. I see it, but it's not who I feel. If the Nets don't take Darius Acuff Jr., I think it'll be a fumble they will regret. The kids, again, I feel a walking bucket. Another walking bucket. His defense has been a point of emphasis of lacking through his career. Exactly. But he even said it himself. That's what he's working on all season or all offseason. That that means his offensive game, he feels so confident in. He knows he has to work on his defensive game. And guess who also was someone who had all offense but worked their way to be a little bit better of a defensive player? Steph Curry. I I'm not saying he's compared, I'm just saying the comparison of the route he takes. The kid I know you made the face. I know you made the face. But in terms of what we're talking about, the kid can get better defensively, and he knows his weakness.

So you're going to so what you're saying is he's just going to be a willing defender because Steph is a willing defender. He's not a great defender. Steph can get in the passing lanes. I think that's what you see with smaller guards. They're going to get in the passing lanes. That's it.

I think I think that, and then I think he's going to learn and try to be a defender that gets, of course, more steals and just gets in the body, and maybe be like a Jalen Brunson, takes the takes the charges and helps the team that way defensively. You know what I mean? Like there's a lot of ways you can still help on a defensive side without being, you know, block heavy or steel heavy.

So I mean, Jalen Brunson, that's an interesting comparison because they hide him nine times out of ten. He will take the charges. He was a bulldog in college. He was actually numbered in college.

I think he was the number one player uh in the NBA this year in taking charges and actually successful.

So he'll take a charge, but they hide him in the corner. He he comes out there on his own. But I hear you. I think Acuff, though, like the Nets have to take him.

I mean, who do the Nets have? Uh they picked Igor uh Dinham last year, who is a point guard, but he's very tall for a point guard. I think he could honestly shift to a shooting guard spot, but uh the there's not, I mean then of course now they have Julius Randle. And then also uh uh what's his face from uh Nuggets? They traded for him, didn't they?

Uh MPJ. Yes, yes, by poor junior. Yeah. So they so they have actually some pieces. It's just how they put these pieces together is really gonna be the hard part.

So is Acuff really gonna Yeah, but you need you need you need a number two, a developed number two, because Igor's offensive game is lacking. He he's he's a true European player who can pass the ball well. He has a defensive prowess, and he has a great basketball IQ. Acuff is basically his opposite in terms of offensive game.

So well, Randall's gonna be the number two until unless they make the postseason. I don't know, man.

The Acuff one is that's interesting because he could yeah, he could go honestly between sticks between, I would say, six, seven, or eight, in my opinion. Because all of those teams need a point guard.

They yeah. Who who is the who was the team before the Nets again? It was you said, was it the Bulls? No, no, no. The Clinton, and they have Darius Garland. They have Garland. Yeah. Well, I mean, it didn't matter when Garland was playing next to Mitchell, they're like the same height. So who knows? He could he might be able, yeah. We'll see. That's an interesting one. This is that's an interesting one.

Okay, so if you guys think Darius A. Cuff Jr. is going to be the sixth pick for the Brooklyn Nets, do you guys think that Mikel Brown Jr. is gonna be the seventh pick for the Sacramento Kings? I do.

I do think that um, I think he I think him and Acuff, like I said, I can honestly go in either other spot. Uh, I think it's just what you're looking for in that type of player. Uh and the big difference is Brown's size. He's a much bigger guard. Um, and if you just want to have that length, uh, I think then yeah, like that's where he can kind of come in and fit into that role. Um now, in my opinion, I think he just fits better with what the Kings can do and what they're looking for. Um, and also who knows what the Kings teams is gonna look like. Like, for all we know, DeRozan might want to be gone. He probably wants to be on an offense or a playoff ready team. Uh Levine is rumored already to be potentially going to other places like Detroit, uh potentially in a trade of some sort. Don't really want him. I'm not saying more, unfortunately. He ain't got no knock. DeRozan would be a great pickup for you guys uh if you guys took him Detroit. But um, so yeah, I think that they're gonna be having to look towards their future even more so. Um and honestly, I cannot think of who else is on that team right now.

So yeah, which is why like Acuff and Mitchell, like they could literally swap. They really could. I mean, yeah. And like you said, who is on the Kings outside of DeRozan and Levine, and they're gonna be up out of there. So so like who's on that team?

Yeah, it's it's that's the thing. The Kings knew they were a bad team last year. Um, so you know, at the end of the day, like it's hard for them to, I feel like to even to look towards what's next. Uh, Malik Monk, uh, they took your boy Killian Hayes.

And with the eighth pick, we will move on to the Atlanta Hawks via New Orleans. Uh, do you guys think they will be drafting Kingston Flemings, the point guard out of Houston?

Yes, because again, honestly, they're gonna take whatever point guards are available between him, um, McCall and Darius Acuff. Like, they need a point guard. They need someone to lead the charge. Uh CJ McCollum, after them re-signing him, um, you know, like that doesn't move the needle. Like, he's a great vet player. He he definitely can help them out on that side, bring a veteran presence there, but they need a point guard. They need someone to help distribute the ball to those young uh forwards they have, because they have talent. As we saw, they were able to make it to the playoffs. Um, but they need someone to help lead that charge. And honestly, with them being a playoff team that has the eighth pick, like it helps, honestly. I think this could help move the needle for them slightly. Um, maybe not this year all the way, but next year, they're gonna be in a way better position.

It helps them. I mean, they have some of their forwards running point, like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels. Like, they bring the ball up, so does CJ. So, I mean, it only helps for the future, like he said. It helps like he'll be around some vets or young vets in a vet with CJ that can help build them out. So that does move the needle. Cass is right in that regard, not immediately, but it percolated right, it'll move the needle.

All right, and with the ninth pick, the Dallas Mavericks will be drafting who?

Uh, so actually, we did miss this news, uh, but it's good we waited because this ties directly into it. Uh, Dallas hired, as of yesterday, Dusty May, NCAA champion from Michigan.

I can't wait for for college to be back because we're gonna get into that at some point. But um, of course, in my head, uh uh Nate uh Nate Amant from Tennessee is who a lot of people have going here. I don't think that's the case anymore. I think he's going to bring uh Mara in now. I think Mara fits well to replace Anthony Davis because they need someone to help protect the paint, especially with Cooper. Um and yeah, like I think that now that moves that up for them. And yeah, this is still a good pick because you still have Kyrie Irving, depending on what he decides to do this season, if he decides he wants to leave or whatnot, but uh you have time to still get a point guard next year. And yeah. They're gonna move Kyrie.

They're gonna move Kyrie. I think they should. And they're gonna take Mara, like you said. I think it's a perfect pairing with Cooper Flag, and I think Dusty being Cooper's coach, he's he's about to elevate even further. Um I'm talking about both of them. Oh, now he's yeah, now they're so like I mean out to your point of like the team like getting better within the next two to three years, like him being their coaches, especially be just like how he leans in the young players. Oh man, they're gonna send like two, three years, they're gonna ascend. So, and like he said, he's gonna bring in Mara. Like, that's a big boy who can space the floor, who's a presence inside, he plays defense. So, and he's a good replacement to AD.

So it's interesting because right now a lot of the mocks have Brayden Berrius uh from Arizona going as the shooting guard. I honestly don't see them taking a shooting guard now with Tyler Hero. I think they have to go point guard. Um, or honestly, they need to go big. They gotta go big. They gotta go big or point guard. That's in my opinion. They have a few guys that I think can still help run the point for them, but I I think if if we're looking at it, I think they go Nate Ament from Tennessee. Um, best available at that time, size-wise. He's a great candidate to just build a team around. Um, and honestly, it kind of leads into what they might do with the 13th pick if he's still available. They might go Jaxel, which I think that kid has shown so much growth over his last his entire career. Yes, I get it. He's 23, he's a little older than most of those players. But at the end of the day, the way he has gotten better every single season, even when he was at UAB before he went to Michigan, he was only there was only two players in that season who led their team in points, rebounds, steals, assists, and blocks.
