SPEAKER_00

Welcome to another episode of It's a Kids World Podcast. Today is November 13th. It's what's today? Wednesday? Wednesday, we are like a week and a half away from going on Thanksgiving break, and I am here with one of my um second grade students. Hey, you got any plans for Thanksgiving? What you doing for Thanksgiving?

SPEAKER_01

Going to my uncle's house.

SPEAKER_00

Your uncle be cooking? What's your favorite thing that your uncle cooked?

SPEAKER_01

Turkey leg and this it.

SPEAKER_00

What you know about turkey legs?

SPEAKER_01

It's good.

SPEAKER_00

It good. So before we started recording, you were starting to tell me about Veterans Day. Now, what were you saying about Veterans Day?

SPEAKER_01

Do you celebrate, do you celebrate Veteran Day?

SPEAKER_00

Um, I mean, I I I wasn't in the military, but I know people and I got friends that are in the military.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know, but as soon as he got out, he died.

SPEAKER_00

Oh.

SPEAKER_01

A couple days later.

SPEAKER_00

He d he died a couple days later after he got out of the military.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, no, I don't know how he died. I know he was in the military.

SPEAKER_00

Uh he was older. Oh. Were you close with him? Yeah, but no, I wasn't in the military, but I do know people that were. Do you uh did your people tell you stories about him being in the military or stuff like that?

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

What do you remember that they told you?

SPEAKER_01

He told me when he was in the military, he he they used to have to wake up real air early. And they used to have stuff, they used to have to run.

SPEAKER_00

I almost uh joined the Navy. Like the Navy are the people that um most of the time they they be like on the ships and stuff. So, but I can't swim.

SPEAKER_01

You can't swim.

SPEAKER_00

I can't swim, man.

SPEAKER_01

I can.

SPEAKER_00

You can swim.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's easy to swim.

SPEAKER_00

And um when I was when I was like maybe six or seven, like I almost drowned. Cause I because we used to go to like this neighborhood pool, because I used to go to like a summer summer camp, jumped off the diving board, went straight to the bottom. They had to uh they had to come in and get me. A lifeguard had to come in and get me.

SPEAKER_01

I almost drowned the phone because I did a fun no, I actually jumped in the pool.

SPEAKER_00

Did you know wait, this before you knew how to swim? Or like after you learned?

SPEAKER_01

I didn't know how to swim. I took swimming lessons. So when I swim, I jumped in the pool. And it was numbers on the side of the pool. It said three feet, four feet, and five feet. I didn't know what they mean, so I jumped in five feet and I drowned.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you almost drowned. Because if you drown, you're right. If you drown, you wouldn't be here. See, look, we got the same story. Both of us almost drowned. Man, you gotta be careful.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I took swimming lessons.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Is it any other thing that you learn how to do over time? I know swimming. Like what else? What else you a big fan of?

SPEAKER_01

Football.

unknown

Alright.

SPEAKER_01

Favorite team, Kansas City. Player Patrick Mahomes.

SPEAKER_00

Of course. Of course. I ain't got nothing against Patrick Mahomes. I mean, my favorite player retired already, so who? Tom Brady. You don't know who that is, do you? Sad to the man, that's sad. He shook his head, no. Sad. Exactly. The GOAT.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Who else? Got any other favorite football players? Who?

SPEAKER_01

Tyreek Hill.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Hill. Yeah, that's it.

SPEAKER_00

Do you play for any teams here in St. Louis? You play for like any poor dog. No. Why you never tell nobody about your game? You don't want nobody to come to your games?

SPEAKER_01

Kind of not.

SPEAKER_00

Why not?

SPEAKER_01

We lost the Super Bowl.

SPEAKER_00

So it don't matter. It's about support.

SPEAKER_01

We're six to zero. We didn't get to score one point.

SPEAKER_00

But hey, it's all about the support though. Like you don't want you don't want your teachers or you don't want um me or Miss Price to come. That's messed up, man.

SPEAKER_01

And then my other team, Jaguars, Cass City, Stillers.

SPEAKER_00

You like the Jaguars? They not good.

SPEAKER_01

Stillers and Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's about it. So one thing um I know we done talked about it a lot because we always, well, I I always like walk you down to like the bus stop, whatever, but we talk about like your is it your papa? Who is it that you work with? Like you do a lot of working outside of.

SPEAKER_01

Not my papa.

SPEAKER_00

It's not your papa? So who is it then?

SPEAKER_01

You're like, so it's one of my mama friends.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

And yeah, he taught me, yeah. He taught me when I was one, he taught me, no, when I was one, he gave me this little, he used to buy me all toys, and then when I started growing up, he started teaching me how to wash cars, cut grass, and paint houses.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay. So is this something that you like to do more? Like, do you like to paint more? Do you like to cut grass? Like, what's your favorite thing?

SPEAKER_01

My favorite thing is to break down stuff. We break down stuff and take the copper and metal out.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

That's one of my favorite things to do.

SPEAKER_00

Is that something you want to like do as you get older? You said no. Why not?

SPEAKER_01

When I get older, I don't know. When I get older, I'm gonna I'm gonna play football in college and see if can I make the NFL?

SPEAKER_00

Okay. But this is just my suggestion. I feel like you should still do those things, like with the copper and the metal and the like the painting and all that kind of stuff.

SPEAKER_01

You know, only be your own a carpenter.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, but that's what I'm saying, though. Don't I feel like you shouldn't stop doing those things because you can eventually have your own business one day, or you can learn about it and you have something to fall back on. That should be like, you can still play, but you should also have something else you could you should do too, like a plan B type of thing. Oh no, that's just my advice to you. Because you should still make money doing those things on the side. Just like how you go to school now, you can be doing those things on the side still. You got some money? You don't got no money. Let me hold something. Why not? How much can I borrow? Give me a limit. It's it's almost the holidays.

SPEAKER_01

Five dollars.

SPEAKER_00

Five dollars? What I'm about, five dollars.

SPEAKER_01

You got fifteen.

SPEAKER_00

You only got fifteen. I'll wait till you get fifty. Then I then I'm gonna need about ten. I can't get ten dollars. I'm not good enough for ten dollars. You done came to school with coffee this morning. Why you drinking coffee?

SPEAKER_01

Cause last night I asked my mom for my car. She said no. I said, she said she'll give me some coffee. Yeah, I got coffee. She just made it this morning.

SPEAKER_00

What does what does she put in it?

SPEAKER_01

Sugar and um that um coffee cream.

SPEAKER_00

Man, you don't even know what you're drinking. You just drink it someday. How many times a week do you drink coffee?

SPEAKER_01

Not that often.

SPEAKER_00

No, she don't give it to you as much. That's good. You need to stop. Lay off the coffee, man. It's a bad, it's a bad addiction, trust me. I know, because I drink coffee. You need to fall back off the coffee.

SPEAKER_01

High chocolate?

SPEAKER_00

Drink, yeah, drink you some hot chocolate. I grew up when I was your age, I was drinking hot chocolate. I wasn't drinking no coffee. My grandma started to let me drink coffee when I was probably like, hmm, maybe high school.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, my mom used to always get coffee and she used addicted off.

SPEAKER_00

No, well.

SPEAKER_01

Coffee good.

SPEAKER_00

Coffee is good. That's that's the addictive part of it. But you know why coffee is good? It's the sugar and stuff that you add to it. But if you just drank coffee just. See, a lot of people, the healthy way, the healthier way to drink coffee is don't put nothing in it. And it's nasty. It's called drinking it black, that's what it's called. So, um, I can't drink it like that though. That's nasty. How do you feel about school?

SPEAKER_01

I don't like it.

SPEAKER_00

Why you don't like school?

SPEAKER_01

Because we got to wake up so early and we're sleepy, and one thing I don't like about school, and we don't get to play as much.

SPEAKER_00

Man, you get recess time and you get elective. You get elective time.

SPEAKER_01

So why so You can like recess. I don't really like recess.

SPEAKER_00

What do you what do you like about school? Because I so I appreciate you being honest and saying that you don't like school, but like something gotta change.

SPEAKER_01

I like art. I like art.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Geo math. And that's it.

SPEAKER_00

How do you feel about reading? You don't like reading. So tell me why you don't like reading. Because maybe if you tell us why you don't like reading, we can help you.

SPEAKER_01

I don't really know how to read, and yeah, I don't want to be reading.

SPEAKER_00

But but that's why you're at school though, to help you. Because guess what? You said you want to play in the NFL, right? You're not if you read. I know. Because if you don't because if you don't don't know how to read your uh contracts, people gonna be stealing your money. If you don't know how to read football plays, then you're not gonna be doing it right. You're gonna be losing games. Or they might not put you on the team because you don't you don't know how to read plays. So you gotta learn how to read, man.

SPEAKER_01

You know what position I play?

SPEAKER_00

What?

SPEAKER_01

Running back. I want to be a QB, but they say I can't. I'm not that good at throwing. I'm more good at running.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

I'm good at catching and running.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But so, but my thing is, in order for you to play football, you gotta learn how to read, man. That's the only thing you don't like about school. The reading part and getting up early.

SPEAKER_01

Man, one thing I don't like is That's all you could think of.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Everything else you like. Okay, well, I know it's your library time. I just wanted to catch you, talk a little bit, chat a little bit about some stuff. Um, but me and you always have. Like there, we always talk about different things, but I just wanted to invite him to the podcast and let him express some of his thoughts and hear some of our conversations that we have on a daily basis anyway. I hope everyone have a blessed day, have a good Thanksgiving. Next episode will probably be early December because we are about to go on break. My goal has been to kind of like put out an episode every other week for people. The podcast is doing good. I surely appreciate all the support that's coming behind it because this is a space for kids to be able to be free from an unbiased perspective and also um a loving perspective because we advocate for our kids. So, thank you everybody, and this has been another episode of It's a Kids World Podcast. Thank you.
