Fun with a kindergartner's experience in a new environment and all that he encounters on the way.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to It's a Kids World podcast. Um, this is our first time doing this. This is something that's new at our school that we wanted to allow kids to have a voice. We wanted um our kids to be able to talk about things that they feel, talk about things that's going on in their lives, and just be able to express themselves. So, starting off, I have one of my kindergartners here with me, and we're just gonna talk about how he feels about school, how it's new for him, and how to how he feels. So, how you feeling?

SPEAKER_00

For school?

SPEAKER_02

I know how you feeling? You feel good, you feel bad, you feel okay?

SPEAKER_01

I feel good.

SPEAKER_02

You feel good?

SPEAKER_01

School is super fun.

SPEAKER_02

School is super fun.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like those kids that don't go to the school, they need to come because it's super fun. And it's a lot of learning here. You get to go to art recess gym. It's just so much fun here. And I feel like kids that don't have that, they should come here and do that.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Back to you.

SPEAKER_02

Back to me. I hey, I like that. Hey, I'm gonna have to have you on all the time. So tell me, so before coming to kindergarten, did you go to like Head Start or anything like that?

SPEAKER_01

So before I started this school, I went to Furview.

SPEAKER_02

Uh did you like it? Was it was it fun?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, what's the difference? Like, what what's different like there and now? Like, what do you see?

SPEAKER_01

I see a lot of things that they made here that was so go cool. So I feel like like I play football. Okay, but when I come home and I gotta play football, I be like getting tired, but I don't get tired because I play football. And tackling is so much fun.

SPEAKER_02

Tackling is so much fun. Did you play football before you came to this school?

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

You did? Alright. So what is something about kindergarten that you don't like? Cause sometimes we like stuff and then sometimes it's things that we don't like, right? So what do you feel like are some things that you do not like about kindergarten? I know it's something, so you're not gonna get in trouble if you say it what you don't like.

SPEAKER_01

I don't like missing brain breaks, and I don't like people hitting me. Well, people hitting on you.

SPEAKER_02

Don't say don't say any names, but people be hitting on you? Do you tell the teacher?

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

Does the teacher do anything?

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. But sometimes I just wanted to be speak up on my own because I don't want to get punked.

SPEAKER_02

Right, okay.

SPEAKER_01

So I just do it on my own.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Do you ever like speak up for yourself when people are bothering you? What are the what are some of the things that you say, like when you speak up for yourself?

SPEAKER_01

I say, hey, I don't like that you just hit me and you didn't say sorry.

SPEAKER_02

Do they apologize or they kinda ignore it?

SPEAKER_01

Uh they kinda ignore it.

SPEAKER_02

They kind of ignore it. Do people ever apologize to you?

SPEAKER_01

Some people do and some people don't.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. How does it make you feel?

SPEAKER_01

Like when people do stuff and then they kinda They give me like sadness and anxiety.

SPEAKER_02

Anxiety? Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Where where did you learn that word from? Who taught you that word?

SPEAKER_01

Inside out.

SPEAKER_02

Inside out? The movie?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So can you tell me what anxiety means? Do you know the meaning?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know the meaning.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, tell me, what does that mean? What does anxiety mean?

SPEAKER_01

It means like kinda said and kinda serious, but mixed together, but it's something.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

It's something that I don't like about people bullying.

SPEAKER_02

Right. It's pretty smart.

SPEAKER_01

Like people beating me up.

SPEAKER_02

We don't need nobody beating you up now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I know that. Yeah, so I like about the thing that I don't like about kindergarten.

SPEAKER_02

SPEAKER_02

It's to you. Why is it so important to you?

SPEAKER_01

Cause I like Reese. Every kid likes Reese.

Every kid does like recess. You are you are correct about that. You know something I notice about you every day? Like when you be in the cafeteria. What's your favorite thing to do?

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_02

Who taught you how to dance?

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_02

You just started doing it?

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_02

So mind you, me and him, we haven't like rehearsed anything. Like, it's just him like speaking his mind. One thing.

SPEAKER_01

And it's going to be more episodes with other students. That's going to be um quite entertaining, but also an eye-opener for people that don't get a chance to have conversations with their, you know, kids at home as well as their students at school. That's it for It's a Kids World Podcast. Thank you.
