SPEAKER_00

Welcome to another episode of It's a Kids Roger podcast. It's episode, I want to say like 13, maybe. I don't know, something like that, but it's a gloomy Friday, and we are back at it. Um I'm here with A D. A D, how you feeling this morning?

SPEAKER_01

I'm feeling absolutely great. I'm glad you're talking about absolutely.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah. Well, I'm I feel great too. I got my cup of coffee. We are counting down days until school is almost over.

SPEAKER_01

Milking cookies for me in the morning. Milking cookies. And yeah, and off of Santa Claus for me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so by there you can tell how my morning is going. But how you feeling though?

SPEAKER_01

I feel uh kind of sick.

SPEAKER_00

You feel kind of sick. You just said you were good. Which one is it, man?

SPEAKER_01

It's it's uh the the the coughing or like covet 19 back again for me because I was born in 2019. Like I used like uh like I was I was in love when COVID-19 was there.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I know that was a crazy time. Schools were shut down, like people were getting sick. It was it was COVID during the COVID time, man, that was crazy, but I don't think you got empty and streets were empty up.

SPEAKER_01

It would it was looking so scary. I saw a video of COVID COVID 19. Like it like I was watching it at nightcom. Oh, I I got so scared. I looked outside, I I thought, I thought that were empty treats. I thought COVID 19 was happening again.

SPEAKER_00

No, we don't want COVID-19 to happen again. I don't think it's COVID, but you said you was feeling a little sick.

SPEAKER_01

In a in a hundred years.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Well, I don't know how this this conversation took a turn. But get your hand. God. So yeah. I uh but I was c I was kinda sick a couple of weeks ago. Like I was losing my voice and I was trying to figure out why. I don't think I had COVID or nothing, but yeah, something going around, and it ain't good.

SPEAKER_01

Were you like yelling?

SPEAKER_00

No, I wasn't yelling. I don't know. 80 youngest, I don't know what happened.

SPEAKER_01

But um Oh your voice, uh, with your uh they had a sore throat.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was kinda it was kinda sore. Uh I didn't lose my taste or nothing though, so most definitely wasn't COVID. But I just think it was whatever like bug or allergies or whatever that was going around.

SPEAKER_01

When I used to uh live live in my uh baby house, I I I was uh like sick.

SPEAKER_02

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01

But my taste buds, but my taste buds were gone. So so I could just taste uh my favorite thing is rice, noodles, pancakes on a stick. Yeah, I ain't noticed.

SPEAKER_00

I do know this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I like I couldn't eat my favorite chips. Like, you know, my favorite chips, it's lace, but uh one time I was sick, I I couldn't eat my favorite candy. It was so it was so good. It was it was so good. It it was Skittles.

SPEAKER_00

It was Skittles?

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Purple bag is my favorite. You you gotta get the purple bag though, man. But the purple bag. That purple bag though, what you know about the purple bag?

SPEAKER_01

But the purple bag, nice.

SPEAKER_00

Nice, yes. That's that's the great, that's a great way to put it, AD. So let's talk about this. Alright, so we started something new um a couple of weeks ago with um our kindergartner. So we started to go to um this community center that um is sponsoring the school and allowing them to go swimming. So we've been going swimming for the last couple of weeks. Like the kids have been learning um how to swim, like the basics of learning, because as a black culture, that's something that um a lot of us don't know how to do with your swim. AD, how you been feeling about the swimming um lessons y'all been getting on Thursdays?

SPEAKER_01

So I feel uh like I feel calm about it, but but but sometimes I I like feel so happy cuz because we get to, we got a swimming pool inside there, a park, we get to do some math. I mean, and color.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

And we get and we get to uh just just enjoy y'all self, huh?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So what about swimming have you been liking? Have you been learning things that they've been teaching y'all? Like, is it things that you've been learning?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I've been learning about how to swim. I already know how to jump in water.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

But sometimes I I got I I guess like I'm like I'm scared my like you know those signs who say don't dive.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

And see those uh uh black those black people, not not not those uh dark uh Mr. Thomas. You know what I'm talking about, those like people and I'm scared I'm I'm gonna like accidentally trip and and bust my head.

SPEAKER_02

I mean But you're not though No, but AD that's not gonna happen.

SPEAKER_00

See, and that's the reason why listen, that's the reason why you guys are learning how to swim. No, I listen, that's the reason why you're learning how to swim, so you don't make those mistakes by falling over or um being afraid of diving because the only thing that y'all are diving off of right now is like the little edge of the water, but once y'all dive, the person that's teaching y'all they're catching you, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So but but but but but I'm scared. I'm gonna slip on a banana pill.

SPEAKER_00

Hey D, you won't be a banana pill by the pool just randomly. This is not the movies, this is not cartoons. Oh god. But yeah, so we uh so that's something that they have been enjoying, and we're gonna keep it up. We're gonna keep it up. So, hey, you're gonna be able to teach somebody else how to swim sooner or later. You think so?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

How did uh you tell your mama how you feel about swimming?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

What'd she say? Do your mom know how to swim?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

She do? Good.

SPEAKER_01

I was at Uncle Gary's house.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01

He he had a pool. And and I was the I was the f like I was the kid who who knows how to uh walk on the deep end, but not the deep end the like little b de head.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

But we was uh making a whirlpool, I was uh on the side like I was like crawling on the side but I wasn't on the floaty, but the floaty it had flipped over. But but the floaty, I I was uh under the water, but Haley saw me under the water, so I got saved by Haley.

SPEAKER_00

Haley your cousin?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Haley BB. Hayley Barnes. Yeah, I know, it's fourth grade, yeah, I know. I know it was your cousin, though. All y'all related, man. It's a few of y'all around. But that's good though, that you were able to do that. So, um, we're gonna be able to, we're gonna be able to do that too. So tell me, like, we getting almost close to you being in first grade. How you feel about that? How you feel about it? So you ain't gonna be the baby in the building no more.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I'm I'm scared I'm gonna go to a different school.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, why are you gonna why would you go to a different school?

SPEAKER_01

You know.

SPEAKER_00

Why would you go to a different school?

SPEAKER_01

Wait, the Katie graduated in the same school.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

But then he uh went to a different class, but he was in the same school.

SPEAKER_00

I know. So you go from kindergarten, you're in kindergarten now, right? Then from kindergarten you go to first grade. So you would stay in the same school. What happens is you will go to a different room. And you have a different teacher. So how Ms. Brown is your teacher right now, you're not gonna have Miss Brown no more. You're gonna have a different teacher. How you feel about that? He got his head on the table. A D. How you feel about Miss Brown not being your teacher no more after this year?

SPEAKER_01

She.

SPEAKER_00

Don't worry about it, man. He up here acting silly.

SPEAKER_01

She was uh so fun.

SPEAKER_00

She was fun. No, but she can't stay with you though. You have to you have to move on and go to a different grade and have a different teacher, but I'm sure they can't they gonna enjoy you. Um I'm more than certain they are. So graduation coming up. Are you excited about graduating?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, uh when I was in pre-K, uh I I left the uh the school to go to this school.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

But y'all didn't know me that much.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't know I didn't know you at all, AD. I didn't know you existed, but m very much so I know you now.

SPEAKER_01

Did Hallie uh told you about me?

SPEAKER_00

Um no. She knew too. She wasn't here last year. I don't think she was here last year. I'm not, I don't remember. It's too many kids for me to remember. Some people come and go, but you're not going nowhere though.

SPEAKER_01

Why we get to have so much fun?

SPEAKER_00

Because school not supposed to be, this just my my perspective. School don't supposed to be just doing work. School should be fun too. Now you do come to school to learn, but I feel like your learning experience should be fun. And I'm glad that you think that it's fun.

SPEAKER_01

But why uh Friday grade? They don't get that much uh field trips like us.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know, that's between them and their teacher, man. That ain't that ain't my call. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Our teachers plan the field trip.

SPEAKER_00

They do plan the field trips. Y'all got a field trip coming up too, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's uh after the weekend.

SPEAKER_00

Where y'all going? Where y'all going?

SPEAKER_01

Mr. Thomas.

SPEAKER_00

What?

SPEAKER_01

Z-O-O.

SPEAKER_00

Which is Zoo. There you go. Y'all going to the zoo. Are you excited about the zoo?

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Man, I love going to the zoo. But I tell you this though, I don't like going to the zoo when it's hot.

SPEAKER_01

I love the zoo when it's hot.

SPEAKER_00

No. Why do you want to go out there? Hot, sweating, then if you shoot.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no. No, when it turns hot time, my uncle's gonna make a video.

SPEAKER_00

What kind okay. What they got what they gotta do with the zoo though.

SPEAKER_01

Uh so so one time we we went to the zoo with with uh my my uh with my uncle named Uncle Gary.

SPEAKER_02

Uh uh.

SPEAKER_01

But but Major, he he was uh like twice the size as me. No, no, no, no, no. The last Christmas, the last, what, the last Christmas, I was the the Christmas when I was not even alive. Major Major was was probably the the age of me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he was. That's how it worked. It's called evolution, AD. But yes, the Christmas once upon a time before you were dangerous. What is dangerous? What's dangerous?

SPEAKER_01

About humans.

SPEAKER_00

No, okay.

SPEAKER_01

When the dinosaurs were alive, no.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

No, no.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, we not we ain't gonna talk about that. So let's go back to the zoo. What's your favorite animal at the zoo? You gotta okay, pick three. I'll let you pick three.

SPEAKER_01

First, we got the most OG. We called the sea lion.

SPEAKER_00

The sea lions. Sea lions are cool. I like, okay, sea lions are cool, alright.

SPEAKER_01

Wait, Mr. Thomas.

SPEAKER_00

Uh give me a second one. Give me a second one.

SPEAKER_01

And the second one, it's uh the hippos.

SPEAKER_00

You like the hippos?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Why do you like the hippos?

SPEAKER_01

Because they can swim and water and and they can uh work on weed.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Hippos is a good one. And then give me one more.

SPEAKER_01

This is the one I don't even I don't even trust the monkeys.

SPEAKER_00

You don't trust the monkeys? Yeah. I was gonna put them on my on my three. I was I was gonna pick the monkeys, I was gonna pick the lions, and then third, I don't even know. I don't even know what the third one will be. I'll probably say, if you're talking about zoo animals, I'll probably say the sea lions too, because they do the things.

SPEAKER_01

Those monkeys who really steal people's stuff, but but they but sometimes like the baby monkeys when when people like show them they they may uh fall off a bridge.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you talk oh you talking about them videos that people be showing. They be traveling and the monkeys be coming and be taking stuff and run off? Yeah, and yeah, I know what you're talking about.

SPEAKER_01

But but I saw one video the monkey had fall fall off the bridge and and and the mama monkey, see, she got mad.

SPEAKER_00

Was it was it a real video or was it like AI stuff?

SPEAKER_01

Not AI. But I saw a video. It was real AI.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. It was real, not AI, that's what you're saying.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, it was AI, AI, AI, AI, AI, AI. AI together.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, got it. It goes, yeah, it do go together.

SPEAKER_01

So it was a video of a guy holding uh uh uh uh umbrella and the monkey had took it and and it had uh uh got off the bridge and started gliding.

SPEAKER_00

Mmm, interesting.

SPEAKER_01

That like you're not in a movie, like that would not happen.

SPEAKER_00

No. It may weigh more, but but you can't get but don't get caught up in the AI stuff. Like AI, like No, no.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not gonna get caught up in that.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah, I don't want you to. I want you to make sure you focus on stuff that's real, okay?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's what we're gonna focus on stuff that's real.

SPEAKER_01

Mr. Thomas.

SPEAKER_00

What's up?

SPEAKER_01

What is that though? It kind of looks like a saboto tiger.

SPEAKER_00

I think it is. Yeah, those are some pictures that I have on my wall with different quotes on it. It says, You do not lose when you fall. You lose when you do not get back and focus on what you can. So, in other words, it's saying, even if you don't understand something or you don't get it, don't give up. Try it again.

SPEAKER_01

Mr. Thomas. What's up, AD? But I heard some voice.

SPEAKER_00

I'll get you back to class.

SPEAKER_01

But I heard some voices behind your wall.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, behind my wall. That's the uh second grade classroom.

SPEAKER_01

Second grade.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, you're gonna be in second grade one day, but we gotta we got a while ago. So all right, one more thing before you go to um before you go to class. Tell me what you're doing this weekend.

SPEAKER_01

The same thing.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know what that is.

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_01

Still T T house.

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_01

Go back to school, Zoom.

SPEAKER_00

Go back to school. All right, so we we we to TT House, and that's it. Alright, sounds good. Alright, well, AD, anything else you want to say before we go ahead and close this out?
