Andy Ngo - Should Oregon trust this pediatrician?

A Texas doctor who surrendered her medical license after being sued over providing gender-transition treatments to minors is now practicing and teaching pediatrics in Oregon. Should a doctor facing those allegations be allowed to continue treating children in another state? Andy Ngo is a journalist, publisher of Ngo Comment, and author of The Zizians: Inside a Trans Death Cult. He joins the show to discuss Dr. May Lau's move to Oregon, OHSU's hiring decision, and the broader debate over medical accountability.
Hey, welcome back to the program. It's a pleasure to be with you, and I'm glad to get to your phone calls and emails. I want to talk first to a great friend of the show, Andy No. He is now a journalist, a publisher of No Comment, an author of The Zizians Inside a Trans Death Cult. Andy, I can't even remember how long we've been talking to each other with uh in this case, you're not in the studio, uh, but you've come up with a really disturbing story out of Texas. Welcome back.
SPEAKER_00Thank you so much for having me on.
SPEAKER_01Would you mind telling my audience what Mae Lau did in Texas that got her put in a position where she had to give up her medical license and literally move out of the state?
SPEAKER_00So in 2023, the state of Texas passed a law that would ban the surgical, chemical, and hormonal transitioning of minors. This is a really um, it's a very unethical medical practice that is unfortunately done in many states in the U.S. And in Texas, the lawmakers looking at the evidence, particularly the unknowns, of how children are affected when their puberty is held back in terms of like brain development and bone development. And we're hearing more and more stories now of how uh youths or former youths were socially pressured or were dealing with other comorbidities and in their course in the course of them dealing with gender confusion, and they deeply regret the medical interventions that they went through, um, that are many of them are irreversible. So this law was upheld in in Texas, and in 2024, the state attorney general Ken Paxton sued a medical doctor who's practicing in the Dallas area named Mae Lau. This is a woman who specializes in pediatric care and particularly around transitioning minors. And in the lawsuit, it alleged that she had violated the state law by um prescribing cross-sex hormones on nearly two dozen children and allegedly falsifying medical and billing records to hide and cover up that record and trail. In 2025, Dr. Lau surrendered her medical license in the state of Texas. And instead of disappearing or finding a new career, she moved to Portland, Oregon and has been hired as an associate professor of pediatrics at OHSU.
SPEAKER_01So she goes from treating kids illegally in Texas in violation of state law to transitioning to another state where she does have an active medical license and teaching future pediatricians how to treat children?
SPEAKER_00So she denies the allegations against her from the Texas Attorney General and that litigation is ongoing. However, um I think what it speaks to is more so the culture that it is there at OHSU. Dr. Lau is is not the only doctor that does that type of um uh services for children, if you want to call it services. There are many. No, the place is notorious, isn't it, Andy? Exactly. And in fact, um some research has come out on the number of trans identifying children across the U.S., Oregon is one of the top states. It's disproportionate um compared to some other states. So I think it seems like in Oregon uh instead of looking at the medical evidence, which is to show that there's a lot a lack of evidence that this type of so-called gender-affirming care produces good outcomes. Uh, they are driven by ideology, which is that it needs to be done by any means necessary.
SPEAKER_01I'm talking to Andy No, who's a journalist, author of No Comment, that's NGO Comment, No Comment, and author of The Zizians Inside of Trans Death Cult. Let me go back to Dr. Lau for a moment. You said she denies the allegations. Does she deny that she gave children these hormone treatments that were illegal under Texas law? Or what? What is what is what's I guess what's the essence of her denial?
SPEAKER_00The denial is of all the accusations against her. So it's unclear to me if she's denying that she did any gender, so-called gender-affirming care in Texas after the law went to effect, or if she's only denying part of the allegations because there's there's a number of them, which are you know, some other concerning parts is allegedly falsifying medical records to hide that trail. Um, Texas is really at the forefront in the United States of really seeking to safeguard and protect children. I think there's been there's so much misinformation about so-called trans medicine out there. And even some of the medical organizations starting this year have had to issue statements saying that they recommend that medical intervention happens after uh adulthood is reached because there are so many unknowns.
SPEAKER_01But Andy, isn't is it fair to say that an awful lot of the treatments, not just the surgical treatments, but the hormone treatments are forever treatments? Once you've had them, is there any ready way to reverse them if the child changes his or her mind?
SPEAKER_00The thing with puberty blockers is that the majority of children who are prescribed that for gender-related distress go on to then receive cross-sex hormone therapies. Once you go through that process as a youth, as a teenager, um, it's irreversible. Uh I've as a journalist, I've interviewed several young men who, in their um either young adulthood or in or in adolescence, went through that process and they tell me about the changes that happened to the body. You know, the the period of puberty is not like forever. Once you miss that type of window, or you go, you don't go through it because you you're, let's say you're a male and you're taking estrogen, you there are so many complications that can develop. For example, like infertility. These are the type of things that I don't know how medical professionals can say that a child can have informed consent about that. You know, I mean, think back to when you were 11, 12, 13, and these are some of the young ages where some of these children are um receiving this type of intervention. Think about what you were, how confused you were at that age. And to tell children that to tell the public that children can make that type of informed consent with their parents, it's these are lies.
SPEAKER_01And and Andy, I've been asking that question all along. I've also wondered how the insurance industry hasn't gone to these medical institutions and said, if you're gonna do this with children and it has the possibility that a girl ends up sterile and changes her mind. And says I was talked into this by my doctor, how in the world are the insurance companies going to cover that? I mean, what is it worth if you've taken away the ability to bear children from a young man or a young woman and then they sue and say, You did this to me when I was too young to give informed consent, but you did it anyway. Can you imagine the size of the lawsuits? That's oftentimes what protects people from people doing unethical things, is the insurance industry says to the doctor, if that's the kind of stuff you're gonna do, we're not gonna cover you. And they're right.
SPEAKER_00Well, unfortunately, on the entire West Coast, Washington, Oregon, and California, uh, Democrats have passed legislation requiring that type of treatment for insurance companies. They have no choice in order to operate in states like Oregon. They have to provide the so-called gender-affirming life-saving care, and quote unquote. That's those are the words that are used by the advocates of this type of practice. And we've got to be. Thank you so much for having me on.
SPEAKER_01You betcha. That is Andy No, gosh, it's gonna be at least a decade since we started having Andy on the show. He comes with some of the best journalism in America. In a moment, just how much taxpayer money is being stolen through government entitlement programs that's coming up.
