AI tools now sit close enough to sensitive data that a single overlooked weakness can put an entire practice at risk. Markets closed higher in the previous session. The 10-year yield drifted down by the close, a small move that eased pressure on borrowing costs. Bitcoin closed higher as well, continuing its recent upward trend. Now we turn to the main story. OpenAI patched two separate flaws that should reset how firms think about AI risk. These were not edge cases, they were direct paths into private data and code. The first flaw involved chat GPT. A malicious prompt could trigger a hidden outbound channel through the DNS layer. That meant a user could paste in client data, and an attacker could quietly pull it out without any signal on the screen. It was invisible, it did not require a click. And it turned a normal conversation into a leakage path. Custom GPTs made the issue worse. An attacker could plant hostile logic inside what looked like a safe tool. A team member could use it day after day. Data could leave in the background. No one would know. The second flaw sat in codecs. A single malicious branch name in a code repo could trigger command injection. That opened the door to stealing GitHub tokens. From there, an attacker could walk into private repos, automation pipelines, and cloud deployments, all from a name and a repo. Both issues are now patched. But the lesson is bigger than the fix. AI tools are no longer side utilities. They are wired directly into your documents, code, and client matter. They have enough access to cause real harm if they break. Leaders who rely on these systems have to treat them the same way they treat identity platforms or billing systems. They are part of the attack surface now. This matters because firms are moving fast with AI. They are plugging agents into document review, drafting, data cleanup, and development tasks. They are turning on integrations with cloud storage and code systems. And in that rush, many firms still treat these tools like harmless productivity helpers. They are not harmless. They sit right next to your crown jewels. Now a few other stories worth your attention. Axios, the popular JavaScript HTTP client, was briefly compromised on the NPM registry. A maintainer account was taken over. Attackers published versions that looked real but carried a remote access Trojan. For roughly three hours, anyone running a routine install command could have pulled malware into their systems. Many teams did. Hundreds of thousands of downloads occurred before the versions were removed. The risk here is simple. Your supply chain is only as strong as the maintainer on the other side of the screen. If you let your developers pull open source packages without guardrails, incidents like this turn into easy credential theft. Microsoft made a major move with Azure Copilot. It is now more than a helper. It is acting as an AI migration crew. It scans infrastructure, it reads code, it creates modernization plans, and it coordinates these steps across multiple agents. The result is a compressed migration timeline that blends in for work with code cleanup. For firms that support clients on cloud moves, this will reset expectations. Clients will expect modernization, not just migration. Iran-linked ransomware groups are also shifting tactics. They are now hiding behind criminal affiliates. That means a firm facing a ransom demand may actually be dealing with a sanctioned entity. Paying becomes a regulatory risk, not just a technical response. The line between state activity and criminal activity is gone. Victims must treat every demand as an OFAC exposure event. Here is what else is worth knowing today. F5 issued a patch that escalated quickly because a bug in its BAG IP APM appliance could lead to remote code execution. Any firm still exposing these boxes to the open internet is taking on unnecessary domain level risk. Nexus is giving non-technical teams a way to deploy AI agents in weeks instead of months. This will put real pressure on mid-market service firms whose clients expect automation now, not later. Google is adding ransomware resistant features to drive for enterprise workspace tiers. This is another sign that cloud vendors may soon dominate the recovery workflow, reducing the role of traditional backup tools. Federal judges are adopting AI tools inside their chambers. That will raise the bar for practitioners. Courts will expect competence with these tools. Firms still debating whether to create a policy are already behind.
