✨ Episode 4 | Calm Over Chaos: Stewardship, Consent & The Courage to Pause
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In a world that constantly asks me to hurry, decide, perform and please, I’ve often wondered, what if the most powerful thing I could do was simply... pause?
In this heartfelt episode, I explore the deeper meaning of consent, discernment, stewardship and the courage it takes to listen to the quiet wisdom within myself before saying "yes."
Drawing upon my background in law, business, motherhood, psychology and faith, I gently unpack the Latin origins of the word consent (consentire – "to feel together"), exploring how legal principles, biblical wisdom and lived experience all point towards one profound truth:
A truthful yes can only come from an aligned heart.
Together we explore:
• The difference between consent and compliance• Why people-pleasing often disconnects us from ourselves• How legal principles surrounding informed consent can teach us about everyday relationships• The biblical themes of free will, invitation and discernment• Why stillness is often where wisdom is found• The importance of consideration, compassion and truly listening before responding• How to recognise when we're saying "yes" to keep others comfortable whilst abandoning ourselves• Why calm is not weakness, but a courageous act of stewardship
This episode isn't about telling you what to believe.
It's an invitation to slow down.
To reflect.
To question.
To pray.
To discern.
To trust yourself enough to hear your own voice.
As always, take what resonates and leave what does not.
If this conversation speaks to your heart, I would love for you to share it with someone who may need a little more calm in a world full of chaos.
Until next time...
Choose calm over chaos.Choose discernment over urgency.Choose presence over performance.Choose connection over control.
With love,
Sian Gissing

00:00 - Welcome to Handbags, Hankies & Hallelujah
SPEAKER_00Hello, beautiful woman. Welcome back to Hambags, Hankies, and Hallelujah. Sean here, where we talk about faith, life, healing, growth, wisdom, tears, laughter, handbags, hankies, and the occasional hallelujah moment that reminds us we're exactly where we need to be. Wherever you're listening from, whether you're driving, walking, sitting with a cup of tea or coffee, folding laundry, running a business, navigating motherhood, marriage, caring for aging parents, rebuilding after heartbreak, or simply trying to make sense of life. I want you to know that you're very welcome here. So put the kettle on, let's get comfortable, and let's dive into this week's episode and have a conversation. Today
01:15 - The Courage To Pause
SPEAKER_00I want to talk to you about something that's been sitting on my heart all week. Not from a place of judgment, not from a place of criticism, but from a place of reflection. The words that keep returning to me are calm over chaos, stewardship, discernment, consent, and the courage to pause. You see, we live in a world that moves incredibly fast. Everyone wants an answer. Everyone wants a response. Everyone wants clarity and certainty, and everyone wants a decision. Yet some of the most important decisions we will ever make require the exact opposite. They actually require us to stop, to pause, to reflect, to listen, and to discern. Perhaps most importantly, to really hear ourselves. Because if there's one thing I have learned through law, through motherhood, through relationships, through business, through faith, and through life itself, it's this. Not every yes is truly a yes. Not every no is truly a no. For many years
02:34 - People Pleasing & Self- Abandonment
SPEAKER_00I was a people pleaser. I wanted everyone to feel comfortable. I wanted everyone to feel happy. I wanted everyone to feel supported. And often, without realizing it, I was making myself uncomfortable in order to make someone else comfortable. I would say yes externally, whilst internally every part of me was saying no. My intuition was saying no. My nervous system was saying no. My heart was saying no, yet my mouth was saying yes. And I think many of us have experienced that, particularly women. We are taught to accommodate, to smooth things over, to keep the peace, to avoid conflict, to be agreeable. But there comes a point where we realize something important. Every time we abandon ourselves to make someone else comfortable, we create a debt within ourselves. Eventually, that debt becomes resentment, it becomes exhaustion, it becomes confusion, it becomes disconnection. Because what we were calling
04:17 - What Does Consent Really Mean?
SPEAKER_00consent was often compliance. And those two things are not actually the same. So let's break down the word consent. Because I believe it's one of the most powerful words in the English language. The word consent comes from the Latin word consentaire. Con meaning together, centaire meaning to feel, perceive, think, sense, or experience. So literally translated, consent means to feel together, to agree in that feeling, to be of one mind. I truly find that beautiful because true consent is not simply saying yes. True consent is actually alignment. An alignment between what we think, what we feel, what we believe, what we choose. And grammatically speaking, consent is both a noun and a verb. A noun because it represents agreement or permission, and a verb because it is something we actively do. We consent every single day. We consent when we sign contracts, we consent when we board an aeroplane, we consent when we join organizations, we consent when we enter into relationships. We consent when we agree to commitments. We consent when we choose where we place our time, our energy, our attention, our trust.
05:59 - Consent Through The Lens of Law
SPEAKER_00In law, consent is far more than simply saying yes. The law asks deeper questions. Those questions could be: did the person understand what they were agreeing to? Did they have capacity? Did they possess the relevant information? Were they acting freely? Was there coercion? Was there undue influence, meaning pressure? Legal scholarship has long recognized that meaningful consent requires understanding, capacity, and freedom. A signature alone is not always enough. And I think there is profound wisdom in that. Because the same principles apply to life, actually. How many times have we agreed to something simply because we didn't want someone else to feel uncomfortable? How many times have we said yes whilst feeling no? You know that feeling in your gut where you feel like your heart is literally sinking into your stomach? How many times have we ignored the wisdom of our own spirit or instinct? Consent says, I understand, I have considered, I am willing, and I actually choose this. Compliance says, I don't want conflict, I don't want rejection, I don't want you uncomfortable. So I'll agree. One creates peace and the other creates a resentment. Spiritually, I find this quite fascinating because throughout scripture we can see the theme of invitation rather than force. And one of my favorite verses is Jerometry thirty, chapter thirty, verse nineteen. Because it says, I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore, choose life that both you and your descendants may live. Notice that language. Choose, not force, not compelled, just choose the free will. And God places the choice before us. The invitation is clear, the decision remains ours through free will and through our own consent. And another beautiful verse is Revelation chapter three, verse twenty. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him. Again, it's a knock. A knock is an invitation, not a battering ram, not force, not pressure, just a knock. And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons we can learn as women. That genuine transformation is invited. It's not imposed. Faith cannot be forced. Love cannot be forced. Trust cannot be forced. Growth cannot be forced. They require willingness, participation, choice, consent. And perhaps that is why stillness matters so much to me. Because true consent rarely emerges from pressure. It rarely emerges from urgency. It rarely emergences from fear or rarely emergences from discernment.
10:08 - Consent Through The Lens of Faith
SPEAKER_00It does emerge in reflection, in prayer, in consideration. And that brings me to another word: consideration. A word I think humanity desperately needs more of. Not agreement, not approval, not endorsement, but actual consideration. The willingness to consider another person's experience, another person's story, another person's fears, another person's pain, another person's perspective. Because what is irrational to one person may be very real to another. The nervous system does not care whether someone else believes your fear is justified. Your body experiences what it experiences in that moment. And this is where compassion becomes essential. Not because we agree, not because we're in a situation where we're trying to force our opinion on somebody else. But if you've had that moment where you've had a trigger or you've been reminded of something, and your body is reliving that pain, that suffering. What we actually need is the other person to sit with us and be prepared to listen in that moment. One of the things my legal
11:45 - Consideration, Compassion & Human Connection
SPEAKER_00background taught me is that words written in black and white are only part of the story. Entire courtrooms exist because people interpret those words very differently. The words remain the same. The meaning changes, the lens changes, the context changes, the experience changes. So perhaps life is very much the same. Perhaps wisdom is not found in forcing our interpretation onto another person. Perhaps wisdom is found in creating enough space for the conversation to happen. Enough space for reflection, enough space for mutual understanding, enough space for humility. I often say take what resonates, leave what does not. Not because I'm here to tell anyone what to think, but because I am here to share, to reflect, to learn, to grow, and perhaps inspire through my own experiences, not to force, not to teach or preach. Just an invitation, a consideration, through consent. If something I've lived through helps another person feel less alone, like you listening, then my pain has had a purpose. If my story encourages you or someone else, then my journey has had value. And I truly believe all of us carry that wisdom within us. Some wisdom comes through study, some comes through experience, some comes through mistake, some through comes, some comes through suffering, some comes through faith. But wisdom grows when we create space for it.
13:41 - Calm Over Chaos
SPEAKER_00Which brings me back to the title of today's episode, calm over chaos. The world has enough chaos, enough noise, enough pressure, enough expectations, enough performance, enough people telling us who we should be. But in truth, what people are longing for is space, space to breathe, space to think, space to feel, space to reflect, space to pray, and space to be heard, and space to hear ourselves again. Because when the noise settles, something truly remarkable happens. Clarity emerges. Truth emerges. Wisdom emerges. And often we discover that the answers we were searching for outside of ourselves had quietly been waiting within us all along. Not because we don't need guidance, not because we don't need teachers, not because we don't actually need a community, but because true wisdom can never be outsourced. It must be discovered. It must be lived, it must be embodied. And perhaps one of the greatest acts of stewardship is learning to trust ourselves enough to pause before we say yes, to reflect before we commit, to discern before we align. And to remember that we are not responsible for managing everyone else's discomfort. We are responsible for stewarding our own truth with kindness, clarity, and integrity. So today, wherever you are, I invite you to ask yourself, where in my life am I saying yes when I really mean no? Where am I abandoning myself to keep somebody else comfortable? What would it look like to pause? To reflect, to pray, to listen, to trust yourself, and to choose from a place of peace rather than pressure. What would that look like? And if I was sat in front of you now with a coffee as your closest friend, what would you tell me? What would you share with me? The world has enough noise. Choose calm over chaos, choose discernment over urgency. Stop, pause, think. Choose presence over performance. And choose connection over control. And above
17:08 - Trust Yourself
SPEAKER_00all, trust yourself enough to hear your own voice. And on that note,
17:20 - Closing Prayer
SPEAKER_00I invite you to take a moment with me for me to pray over you. Let's pray together. You may close your eyes. If you're driving, you can just listen to this prayer. In the name of our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, hear our prayer. I pray that this special, beautiful person listening to this recording right now is able to come to you, to cry to you, to reach out to you, to bring all their burdens to you today. I ask, Heavenly Father, that you release them from any pain, any suffering, any fears, and you give them peace. You bring peace to their heart, you bring peace to their mind. Let them feel your unconditional love and the power of that love today, now, here. May you bless them, bless them with health, bless them with wealth, bless them with abundance, bless them with the eyes to see, the ears to hear, the mind to have discernment, to seek your instruction and to act upon it with confidence, with clarity, with the skills of stewardship. I pray over the listener right now, in the name of Jesus Christ, that you bring calm to their heart, you bring calm to their mind, you bring the courage to let go and let you, God Almighty, take the wheel and take over and lift off any pain, any suffering, any depression, any anxiety, any stress from them now. So they feel your love, they feel your presence, they can hear you call them closer to you. We give thanks for our home, for our food, for our family, for our life, for our ability to love, for the air in our lungs. We thank you for every day, giving us the free will to choose to come back to you. Thank you for the ability for us to have faith. In the name of Jesus Christ, it is done. Amen. So I just want to take this final opportunity to thank you for spending time with me today. Thank you for your love and support. And if this episode has been useful to you, feel free to send me a message. You are very special, you are very beautiful inside and out. You have a purpose, you are worthy of being here. The world needs you, you have a gift, and I look forward to celebrating you expressing that gift. Until next time, I've been Sean, and this is Handbags, Hankies, and Hallelujah. God bless you.
