Shout out. What do you do? Oh boy. What y'all know about a supermodel? For Shout out Magazine. Look, Pip Juice, I give him Babina Mother.
unknownIf you're a bad game.
SPEAKER_02What's up, everybody? Welcome back once again to the Freak Apotamus Podcast. How's everybody doing today? Everybody ready for some RB? Ready for some soul? Let's see what's been happening in the world of music. Uh recently since the last episode. 2024. 2024 is the 40th anniversary of the movie Purple Rain. And the soundtrack album, my friends. Everybody remembers Purple Rain, I'm sure. I'd be curious to see what the estate has in store for the for the anniversary. Hopefully they've got some exciting things in the works coming down the pike. Let's see, we had a uh a special purple birthday this week. Anybody can remember the group's vanity six, Apollonia Six, remember Nasty Girl, Sex Shooter, Lou Limousine, all that's a member of the group. And her name is Susan. She was the one that usually had on the white chemistle. Anyway, Susan turned the big six oh this week. Man, I can't believe it. Where is the time gone? I can remember. Back in 82, 83, 84, when Vanity Six was hot. Apollonia 6 was hot. She looks she looks pretty outstanding for her age. If you haven't seen any recent pictures of Susan, check around, she looks pretty much the same. She's not wearing the uh before many six put together a group. She was also part of that group. And uh never changed the name to Benny because the name of the roll wasn't a great choice. We're gonna do something more different. Junior Tricker. Ray Parker. He was a member of a group called Radio. Had a song called Jack and Jill. Back in the late 70s, early 80s. He also did uh The Other Woman and tons of other stuff. He was huge in the producer world. Anyway, this is a version they were more familiar with. New additions take a takes me back to the mid eighties, man. High school. And you know, you could tell that Ray Parker Jr. had his touch. Added his touch to his version, but you can hear the That was the sound. That was Ray Parker Jr.'s sound. Anyway, remember a group called Brothers Johnson. They have this huge kit called Strawberry Letter 23. But how many of you knew it was an original? An artist by the name of Suggy Otis did it originally. Who knows who Chuggy Otis is? Country ass name, I know. But he originally did Strawberry Letter 23, and it went like this. Sound familiar. Pretty mild version.
SPEAKER_01All through the morning rain, I guess, the sun doesn't shine, rainbows and waterfalls.
SPEAKER_02So let's do my let's go with the Brothers Johnson version. Same song, but different. Come on. Come on with the buffering, man. Sorry about that, my bad. Hear that funk? That bass line, that's funky, man.
SPEAKER_03Hello, my love. I heard a kid screaming. Rhythmic sent me playing here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was a huge hit back in the late 70s. I can remember that one. As a kid. How many of you remember Teddy Pendergrass, right? Teddy Pendergrass was a huge soul pruner back in the 70s. Early 80s. Yeah the song Love TKO, right? Yep, you guessed it. It wasn't original. In fact, the guy by the name of David Oliver first did it. And goes a little something like this. It's crazy because not many of us knew that these songs weren't original. I mean, hearing it as a younger person, but now to learn as an adult. That these weren't original just blows my mind. And as you can tell, this version, David Oliver did it in a falsetto voice. Not quite as sexy, right? Here's Teddy's version. This is the version I remember. Oh yeah. Quiet storm, y'all. Late night on your radio. It's raining outside. You crack the doors open. Get a peek at your mama and your daddy or your baby's mama. Baby daddy. Slow dragging.
unknownTold myself time and time again.
SPEAKER_02And they they they catch your ass. Keeping through the crack of the door. And they send your ass back to bed.
unknownSkip all over again.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I can remember, man. My mom cleaning house on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Playing this stuff. She was huge. Teddy Pinegrass fan. Still is.
unknownWhat you think about it, girl?
SPEAKER_02She played a lot of Lou Rogs. Um Gene Chandler.
SPEAKER_04Try to take control of the left.
SPEAKER_02Harold Melvin in the Blue Notes. Speaking of Harold Melvin in the Blue Notes. How many of you knew that they did this originally? You know what that is? This became huge in the disco world. Not this version. It just blows me away. Blows me away to hear Teddy Pinegrass' voice on this one. Even his humming is good. This is called Don't Lead Me This Way.
unknownI can't survive. Can't survive.
SPEAKER_02Which was later made famous by an artist by the name of Thelma Houston. This is Thelma's version that everyone's more familiar with. Keyboards, man. I can remember my stepdad. He was hot for Thelma Houston, man. This is all he ever played. Like we'd be in the car cruising. He'd have this one on repeat. On his eighth track. I was like, stepdad. Don't you have anything else that we can listen to? Yeah, this was huge. It's huge in the 70s, man.
SPEAKER_01I can't survive. I can't stay alive without your love.
SPEAKER_02Alright. Now we're gonna talk about I can't exist. Uh rappers that have used music.
unknownDon't leave me this way.
SPEAKER_02That's not original for them. Rappers that have reached back and borrow the music from the original artist. I'm gonna play something and you tell me which rap song it belongs to. Anybody know? That's a pretty simple one right there. This is Brenda Russell.
unknownA little bit of love.
SPEAKER_02A little bit of love. Have you guessed it? And if you guessed Big Pun, still not a player. You're right.
SPEAKER_03Don't want to be cheating.
SPEAKER_02Late nineties. I can remember them bumping this in the clubs in the late nineties. Everybody hit the floor.
SPEAKER_01All right.
SPEAKER_02This is Herb Albert. This one's called Rise. Have you guessed it by now? Here we go.
unknownCome on.
SPEAKER_02Notorious BIG.
unknownTim's for my hula games in Brooklyn. Dead bright. It's a hair bride, diggy there, airlight. Papa been school since days of under room.
SPEAKER_02Hypnotized.
unknownTalk go to us.
SPEAKER_02I've always wondered. Was it the producer? Who came to the rap artist and said, hey, easily take it out? I got this original joint. And we need you to put your raps on top of it. It's hot. It's gonna go straight to the top. Or was it the rapper himself who had done his homework and research and knew about these songs? And said it's gonna be hot. Alright, how about this one? This is The Edge by David McCullough. Dre was probably listening to this at some point. So you know what? This is this is dope. Let's wrap over it, see what we get. And so they came up with this.
SPEAKER_03You know what happened with the D R E.
unknownYeah, yeah, yeah. You know the West Coast is back for all you sucker. What in here?
SPEAKER_03Let's move on. Should be turning it up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Everybody knows that one, right? That's an easy one. Sylvia Stripland. You can't turn me away. Everybody knows it became this. BIG, Junior Mafia. Sorry. Late nineties. Man, I hope you too they don't shut this show down. For copyright infringement. But I'm only playing quits, I'm not playing the entire song. So hopefully they'll let me survive this one. Alright, let's move on. Let's move on.
unknownDo you guys know who I'm talking to?
SPEAKER_02This is Lynn Collins.
unknownLet me tell you something.
SPEAKER_02The music kicks in. Don't know where we're going with this one.
SPEAKER_01So you'd better think.
SPEAKER_02This one might be a little tricky for you. Anybody know? What artists and what song this was borrowed from? Here we go.
SPEAKER_00If you guessed, MC Raw face, and DJ Easy Rock.
SPEAKER_02Rob bass. I wanna rock right now. You are correct. This was huge. In 1990. 8990. Another one of those. Get your ass out on the dance floor or something's wrong with your song. Yeah. Right now we're gonna take it back. Take it back to the real early 80s. This this song I'm about to play probably came out in the late 70s now. And then became huge in the early 80s with another artist. See if you know this one. This is a German group called Kraft Work. Trans-European Express. Gotta get to the hook though. This might be a horror one for ya. But you can hear a lot of this stuff later in the early to mid eighties. Rap. Dance music. And they were unique for their time, man. This is like late 70s, I think. Waiting for that hook. That familiar hook. Come on with the hook. Man, they were using this technology early. There it is. There's that familiar hook right there. Anybody know what artist borrowed this? Here's your answer. Africa Bombada. So Sonic Force, this was hot back in 81-82. I remember we used to dance off this a lot. Yeah, everybody be popping to that, man. Bookaloo bandits. We used to go to the team club. It was like 13-14. We'd be popping. We'd have these popping groups. Battling each other. This is before breakdancing. Breakdancing came out like 84-85. Popping was the thing back in 81, 82. Electric boogaloo.
unknownWe know a place where the nights are hot. It is a house of both females and males.
SPEAKER_02Alright, ladies, your favorite blind. Let's move on. This one. This one's gonna surprise you. Everybody knows that one, right? But you're not gonna believe who the original artist is. The original artist is Joe Cocker. Remember Joe Cocker? He had that that hit song. What would you do if I sang that too? Wait till the voice kicks in, you'll you'll recognize it. It's called Woman to Woman. Come on, Joe. Come on, Joe. There he is.
unknownEverything I say.
SPEAKER_02Familiar voice, right? Tupac said, shoot. I'll take that music and I'll do this with it. Incredible, man. Music knowledge. Right. Yeah, we used to we used to play this hard when I was in Okinawa, Japan.
SPEAKER_03When the fellas let me welcome everybody to the Wild Wild West.
SPEAKER_02Here's one that everybody knows. Roger Troutman, right? I had the pleasure of meeting Roger back in ninety-three-94. We were over in Okinawa, Japan. Uh living on a military base. And he was there to do a show on the military base that we were staying at. And uh earlier that day, he had an autograph session. I was fortunate enough to get an autograph which I have on my wall over here. Priceless man. Cool dude. I was a musician at the time. Trying to get my demo heard. Took my demo. Talked about my music for a while. Nothing ever came of it, but it was cool to actually sit down and have a conversation about music. To one of the pioneers. He was famous for the talk box. His own sound, his own style. So this was later borrowed for this particular rap song. See the similarity. Making them their own.
SPEAKER_00See us all about the cheddar.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, man. It's just amazing. A lot of the stuff that we thought was original. Not original. Musical knowledge, man. Can't get enough of it, man. But anyway. That's all I've got for today. I'm about to get up out of here. But uh, as usual. Thanks for watching. And remember like, share, and follow. Tell a friend about us. We need to as many followers as we can get. We need to reach as many people as I can. Right now. I'm at about 42 followers. My short time goal. This is January when we end up like short time goal.
